Pause/unpause streaming QuickTime

Trying to watch the latest keynote, but as I'm working I need to pause the video every once in a while to continue later. However, unpausing almost never works with QuickTime! If I just do a brief pause for a few seconds I can resume, but usually it's a phone call or something I have to do that takes minutes or an hour. After this time I can no longer unpause. Instead I have to re-open the stream and on a good day I can fast forward to where I was at, but that's not every time.
This problem has existed for as long as I can remember, and through version after version of both QT and Wintendo. Is there a fix for this, or is the QT format really that old fashioned?

You're doing better than I am!
For some reason, I get no QT controls at all, so I cannot pause it and resume watching! I'm having to restart the entire keynote.
Unless I can find it somewhere that is QT control friendly, I'm going to have to skip this one.

• Clip Notes + Streaming QuickTime = broken?

I guess this is more of an AME or Reader issue, but figure that PPro users are the most common users of Clip Notes...
I've tried exporting a Clip Notes PDF with streaming QuickTime video from both PPro CS3 + AME, PPro CS4 + AME, and standalone AME CS4, and all of them report an error: "Acrobat has encountered an error while playing this media clip:"
If I use QT but select to embed the file, it works fine. If I use WMV, either embedded or streamed, it works fine. I have confirmed that I'm setting the URL correctly in the Clip Notes settings. The QT spit out by the Clip Notes export plays fine in QT Player, so I know the video itself isn't broken. I'm attempting to play/view these using Reader 8.1.3.
Obviously, the solution would be to not use QT, or to at least embed it, but it's a much larger file than can be comfortably sent to my client (who isn't that technologically savvy). I like the QT option because of the ability to easily navigate/rewind the video.
Anyone else experiencing issues with Clip Notes and streaming QuickTime?

I'm using Vista 64.
I was having the same problem with the transport controls not showing up.
I set AcroRd32.exe to run in XP mode and that fixed the problem with the embedded movie file.
Transport controls show up.
Thanks.
I hoped that would also fix the QT streaming problem.
However, if I select "Streaming" and upload it to my server then when the Clip Notes tries to play the file it says "
This happened also before I set AcroRd32 to XP mode.
No problem with "Clip Notes Windows Media" format.  It uploads and plays fine.
The .mov file is on the server.   I can play it fine in a browser.
Any ideas why Adobe Reader won't play a streaming .mov file in Clip Notes, but will play a streaming .wmv file?
You really need to use QT so you can scrub the timeline.
.wmv files don't let you scrub!
Adobe why haven't you after all these years made Clip Notes use flash?
If you did it would truly be cross-platform.
Thanks.

• IPod Touch 2.2.1 Stopped Streaming Quicktime Clips

Hello,
I searched and couldn't find any info on why my iPod Touch 2G stopped streaming quicktime clips from the site drummerworld.com.
This has not been an issue until recently, and now I just get a strange icon rather than a clip playing. Any info would be great as I visit this site quite often for tips and such.
Since it is tied to the OS you are running, you really don't have any control over which version of Quicktime you are running.
Ok, I'm running v 7.6 which is the same as the site.
Perhaps the site has changed something ? This is strange because it worked for the first few weeks.

• Streaming Quicktime Won't Display (But did in earlier version)

I'm a professor who had some streaming Quicktime movies embedded in the previous version of Keynote. They all worked great this summer.
I upgraded to Keynote '08 and erased the old versions, only to find that the Streaming Quicktime movies no longer display. (One self-contained Quicktime movie works great.)
I tried changing the "Flash" choice under preferences, but - not surprisingly - that didn't do anything.)
Any suggestions?
(Sadly, I have to teach tomorrow and I REALLY don't want to have to install the old version of Keynote.)

I just tried with the streaming video from here.
http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/d7625zs/event/
And, while the audio plays, the video doesn't refresh. It displays the first frame then nothing else. I haven't figured out a workaround for it, unfortunately.

• Advice on Apple TV Pausing During Streaming (Apple Remote App too)

With all the talk and excitement of the new Apple TV, I'm not sure if this problem applies. I'm not sure if the new Apple TV streams movies like the old one did.
Regardless, I have had some difficulty with my 40GB Apple TV that I finally figured out after months. I'll describe my network, describe the problem and solution, and why that solution works.
1. My network.
I have:
an iMac connected wirelessly to an Airport Extreme
a Western Digital hard drive connected via ethernet to my Extreme. My movie library is here
an newer airport express (N) connected to my stereo on the main floor
an older airport express (G) connected in the basement with my XBOX connected to it via ethernet
an Apple TV in the basement.
2. The problem
When I'm streaming movies, it often works just fine. However, sometimes, during a movie, the playback pauses as if Apple TV needs to re-cache the movie or something. It will pause for about 10 seconds or so then keep playing. When it starts to play again, the movie jumps forward the 10 seconds to the current playing point. This then works for anywhere from another 30 seconds to several minutes. When this pausing occurs, if you click the Apple remote to bring up the status bar, you can see the timeline of the movie continue to move along. Then, other times, the whole thing will somehow cure itself and start working again.
Unrelated but later found to be related problem with Apple remote on iPod touch
Sometimes, trying to connect to my iTunes library, it couldn't connect and I'd get the message that my firewall is getting in the way. You'll see as it turns out, this isn't the problem.
How I found the solution
When this pausing occured, I would unplug the Airport Express in the basement. This is the one the XBOX is connected to. After a couple of seconds, I'd plug it back in. On the TV screen, it would revert back to the movie list and show that there were no movies to play. Then, after a couple of seconds, my movie list would reappear. I'd restart my movie and it would work just fine.
Here's what was happening
Somehow, I configured my Airport Express router in the basement to be an extention of the network The problem is that the Express in the basement was G speed and not N speed (I think that was the problem). Sometimes, Apple TV would connect to the Express router in the basement rather than my Airport Extreme router upstairs. When this happened, the pausing during streaming would occur. This also makes sense now that the movie list would briefly disappear when I'd unplug my Airport Express in the basement. The connection would be lost but then a few seconds later, Apple TV would find Airport Extreme and reconnect. Then it would work perfectly.
I also noticed two separate networks coming up when I did a network scan. I would fire up my WIndows laptop and do a network search. I would get two separate instances of 'Mynet'. One would be N speed and the other would be G speed. This now also makes sense since one of them was my Express and the other was my Extreme.
The solution
I did two things. I swapped the two Express routers so I had the N speed router in the basement connected to the XBOX. I also configured the network so it was 'all the same network'. Now, when I do a network scan on my Windows laptop, I no longer get the two separate instances of 'Mynet' coming up.
Since then, I have never had a problem streaming movies nor have I had a problem with my Apple Remote app on my iPod Touch.

I'm having similar problem.
My set up:
iTunes running on my MacBook C2D, 2GB RAM
Movie contents are in an external USB2.0 HDD (7200rpm) attached to Airport Extreme (802.11n)
Typical movie content is mp4 file with 1.8mbps bitrate.
When my MB is completely idling state, ATV gets data w/o pausing.
When MB is doing some task (web browsing, etc), no problem.
When iTunes starts downloading some video podcasts (to MB, not syncing to ATV).... the movie streamed to ATV gets paused and gets into the same state as gjbonnington described.
Any idea how to solve??

• IMac Duo will not stream Quicktime behind my router.

Just bought a new iMac Duo it will not stream QT behind my Linksys router. Now I know this is a bug in QT and a port not being open for this new version of QT on the Duo because all other Macs I have work fine.
If I move the iMac Duo to a DMZ zone it will stream just fine.
Now what UDP or TCP port range do I need to open for this iMac Duo version of QT 7.0.4 to stream properly ?????
Thank you for your help.

Does this affect the system even without the firewall turned on? I don't have the firewall enabled (at least I think it is off - bear with me as this is my first Mac I noticed that neither the HTTP (port 80) nor UDP (port 554) work for my iMac, although my wife's iBook G4 and my other PC, an Athlon64 Windows XP box, play streaming Quicktime flawlessly over HTTP behind my NetGear DSL router. My iMac fails with connection error -5420.
All things considered, since I am a recent Mac owner (only had the thing for a about a week) and it is my first, I am very happy. I am just a bit disappointed in Apple for a problem like this since media technologies are their bread and butter.
Any more thoughts are certainly welcome.

• Streaming QuickTime movie without any links (i.e.:"file, edit, view, help")

Hello all,
I am streaming videos, using 'VitalStream', for items I have for sale. The local governing board of the organazation/web site I am posting these movies on will not let me post any 'links to other areas of the web site where there is promotional information'. So, the 'file, edit, view, help' on the quicktime player or movie is considered 'links' according to the organization.
Is there a way I can export the movies, from iMovie HD or GarageBand or QuickTime Pro, so those links do not show on the streaming video? All I want to show is the movie and the play/pause functions, or if I can get it to just show the movie and sound that would be o.k. too. The majority of people who will be viewing these movies are using PC's. Should I get 'flip 4 mac' and convert it to wmv, will that cut out the 'links'?
PowerBook G4 1.67   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iPod 80 G, iLife '06, iWork '06, QuickTime Pro, Sony DCR-HC96.

Not familiar with Vitalstream...but if you embed your QuickTime movie into a web page, you can control whether or not there is a controller, and there is no player skin involved. The movie you embed can be either a full movie, or a reference to a movie running on a streaming server somewhere.
The key is that instead of opening the movie in QuickTime player, you want it to run in the browser plug-in. Here, let me show you a couple of examples from my own pages. The code is fairly clean; feel free to rip off my embedding code if you want.. 8-)
The most basic form of movie embedding can be seen on this page where a movie plays within the page, with its controller, which includes a play/pause control and a scrubbing bar.
By comparison, on this page, about halfway down on the right-hand side there is an embedded movie with no controls on it, set to loop continuously. Again, you can look at the source to see how it was done.
Please note that I'm using an old form of object embedding that has some issues in Internet Explorer. It still works, but in order to use the controllers the user has to click on the movie twice. Also, in my case, the movies are stored on my web site, and are not streamed at all. If I were using a streaming host, I could put a reference movie on my site and use it to point to the stream.

• Streaming Quicktime...

Is it possible to get Front Row to play Quicktime streams?
I've tried with the NASA TV stream, but all I get is a green screen, but perfect audio!
Here's what I did:
Tha NASA TV web site has a link that downloads a ".qtl" file, which instructs Quicktime Player to connect to the stream (link is: http://www.nasa.gov/qtl/151335mainNASA_TVQT.qtl )
Drop the ".qtl" file in my Movies folder and Front Row doesn't recognise it, but rename it to a ".mov" file and it does. The renamed file also still works in QT Player.
Since it works in QT Player, shouldn't it also work in Front Row?
Dual Core Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Actually, that's not the case.
iTunes plays the (renamed) NASA QT stream perfectly.
And (if you have the Flip4Mac and DIVX components installed) Front Row will play .wmv and .divx files whereas iTunes won't!
So... still a mystery as to why Front Row won't play the stream when everything else is fine with it!

• Video pauses when streaming from ix2-dl from windows or WD Live TV

When streaming music videos or any video from my Lenovo ix2-DL to my WD Live TV or PC the videos play but then pause then will pick up a bit further down. In Windows if I refresh my Explorer window it acts like the share isn't there then it reconnects and the video will continue to play. Reboot of computer doesn't fix this. And since this also happens when streaming to my WD Live TV it's not related to windows.
Firmware Version:4.0.8.23976
Status is fine. No errors.
Media Sharing is enabled on all shared folders.
Media Server is enabled.
Media aggregation is disabled because I don't want it to scan my other computers for content etc.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Nevermind. I believe it has to do with the .flv extension on videos I stream. I didn't notice it before because I would just stream them to my computer. If I stream mp4 they work fine, but the flv extension doesn't work. Those videos will pause every so often while streaming to my wd live tv.
Time to convert a bunch of movies.
Thanks and you can close this out.

• Cannot stream QuickTime .mov files - Snow Leopard

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, I have been unable to stream movies using the new QuickTime Player 10 - ironically the Apple Event of yesterday! It won't play in either Safari or Firefox. The window will open but no streaming will take place, nothing at all is downloaded.
I have both QuickTime Player 10 and QuickTime 7 installed on my system.
There appears not to be a preference pane for QuickTime in the System Preferences any long, so I am unable to check the streaming settings?
Movies already downloaded into iTunes will play just fine in QuickTime Player 10 however.
Can anyone help me with the streaming problem? It's not an ISP problem as if I use another Mac still running old Leopard with older Quick Time 7 Pro, it works just fine.
Thank you for any help you can offer.

Hello and thank you for your responses.
The problem is solved! It was Glimmerblocker preventing QuickTime 10 from streaming. I turned off Glimmerblocker in the system preferences and all is well.
If anyone else is having this problem, I suggest you look at your ad blocking software (like Glimmerblocker).
Thank you for your kind suggestions - response was greatly appreciated. Sorry about my profile still showing a PowerBook - that is very out of date. I am running a 2 year old MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard.

• Video Playback Pauses when streaming from iTunes to itunes

Hi,
I have a 2011 iMac running OS X Mavericks Server and I use this as my main iTunes library computer.  I also have a 2013 (latest model) MacBook Air running Mavericks.  My WiFi network comprises of 2x Airport Express's, both the latest models and configured for both 2.4ghz & 5ghz frequencies.
Using Home Sharing, I like to stream video from my iMac's iTunes library to my MacBook Air.  The problem is that playback pauses every few minutes.  The only way to resume playback is to close the video window and open the video again.  This problem occurs regardless of video quality (SD, 720 or 1080) and on both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz wifi settings...  On the odd occasion this problem doesn't happen at all.
I experienced this problem before upgrading to mavericks so I don't think its mavericks related.  And I don't experience this playback issue when streaming to ipad mini, iphone, or apple tv... It only happens when streaming from imac to macbook air...
Please help if you have a solution.

Try:
ffmpeg -i rtsp://localhost:8554/test.sdp -acodec copy -vcodec copy -re -f flv "rtmp://168.187.121.71/livepkgr/mystream&adbe-live-event=liveevent"
I don't strream ffpmeg from my source, but I stream h264 from my source, and this works when transcoding.
Hope this helps!

• DW CS3  Streaming Quicktime Video

I put a Quickime video in a web page following the instructions. When it appears in a browser it loads first, 3 minutes , and then plays. How do I get it to stream when a visitor clicks on it?
<embed src="Audio_Board_Instruction.mov" width="600" height="475" type="video/quicktime" pluginspage="http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download" autoplay="false"></embed>
I do have an option to put the video in other formats.
Thank you as always.
Cheers!  Phil

Well first off, you are probably not really "Streaming" the video (playing right as the data is being downloaded), but rather "Progressively downloading", meaning that the video file is FIRST being downloaded in the visitors Temporary Internet Files folder and then being played back from there.
Most video files will START the download process and then after just a few seconds of data being downloaded into the cache,.....the video will start to play while AT THE SAME TIME, the rest of the video is being downloaded into the buffer.
One of the many reasons that .mov video files never really caught on for Web delivery is the problem with the MOOV Atom... or the index file that tells the video player how large the file is, so the video file can figure out how much/when the file has loaded enough to start the video file playing. Unfortunately, many .mov files have this very important index file at the very end of the video file.... so the entire file has to download before it knows to start to play....
so just SWITCH that index file to the beginning of the file like most other Web friendly formats do. Check out:

• Flash Player 11.3.300.265 Crashes when paused video/stream loses focus to a different firefox window

Whenever I have a video or stream in fullscreen and paused and I try and use my other screen for firefox, it will crash.
I have the latest update of flash player (11.3.300.265) & firefox (13.01, also tried 14.0 beta)
EDIT: Forgot to mention that I have hardware acceleration disabled in both firefox and flash.

Hi,
I had the same. Adobe blamed RealPlayer for the bug but that's not true. It's the protected mode. You have to turn it off via editing a file manually.

• Streaming Quicktime to a server

Hello, does anyone know of a way/software that will allow you to directly stream from an application window to a streaming server such as DSS or QTSS.
There are many applications that allow you to capture from an application window to a .mov file. (iShowu etc..) There are many applications that will edit and stream these files to a server (WireCast. Quicktime Broadcaster)
Is there any Mac applications that will allow you to broadcast directly from an application Window in the same way you can capture to a file?

Is there any Mac applications that will allow you to broadcast directly from an application Window in the same way you can capture to a file? < </div>
Not that I know of.
The easiest way to do this is to use a second computer. You either shoot the screen with camera and move the camera output through another computer to your streaming server or you use a scan convertor to accomplish the same thing.
Hope you get better advice but this gets the job done.

• IPad Xfinity App Continuously Pauses When Streaming Videos

Just as the topic title states. It continuously freezes even though I have full reception bars, and my speed test hits 24.5mbps download and 4.25mbps upload.
Does anyone else have this problem? And does anyone know of any way to handle this problem?
Btw, I'm really close to the router as well.
