  • T420: Backlighting problem

Hello everyone, I have a Thinkpad T420 (6 months old) and I think I have a backlight problem. The backlight vanish at the startup of the computer and when I boot in Safe mode. Can anybody helps me ? Thanks !
Moderator Note: Edited subject to match content.

Hmmmm ... have you tried increasing the brightness? Any on screen display showing the brightness bars?
You can try uninstalling power manager, power management driver and hotkeys package then do a reboot then install all 3 again and see if it helps.

  • Pavilion dv9843cl backlight died

The backlight on the screen of my Pavilion dv9843cl 17" laptop died.  I can see the shadow of characters on the screen as I type, so I know the liquid crystal part of the display still works and attaching an external monitor to the laptop works just fine.  I would like to know what I can do to get the backlight working again.  Is there a component I can replace?  If so, what is the HP Part #?  Cost would be helpful as well.  Are there published instructions on how to get to that component inside the machine?  I am pretty handy with electronics -- I used to build HeathKits and, much later, desktops....
    Regards, Mikey

Older notebooks had a CCFL backlight that worked off an Inverter board.
3 things could be faulty here, Backlght itself, Inverter board or the cable that goes from the system board to the LCD panel.
I don't think it would be very expensive to fix it but since your PC is quite an old model, I can't say.

  • Unsual Backlight Problems. :(

    Hi everyone,
just as the title says, I have a problem with the backlight of my 5th gen ipod. For some reason, the backlight flashes at random moments. It happens as I search through my songs, watch movies, etc. I just got it about 2 weeks ago and have no clue how this happened.
The only time anything "could" of happened was when I went a full day of shopping where I was listening to it the whole time. But I dont see how walking around can give any type of 'damage' to an ipod. I know for a fact that the ipod has 2 types of backlight, either full lighting or none at all. As for my ipod, when its flashing, it has a dull type of backlighting to it. And if I press the menu button hard enough or anywhere near the menu button, it'll stop (only temporarily and i try to not force it).
I also noticed that the battery life has shrunken a great deal. Today, my power went out during a thunderstorm and I decided to watch a movie or two. I watched for about an hour or so until I saw that the battery life was low (before I started watching it was a full bar). It shocked me how this ipod is still new and can drain all of its power from just one movie. Im guessing its the backlight.
If anyone also had a problem like this, I would like to know how it can be fixed if possible. The last thing I want to resort to is sending it back to the company. (Previous experiences led me to frustration)
p.s - ^this^ has nothing to to with Apple in any way XD

eeep. I have a bunch of songs and movies on the ipod that I deleted off of my computer. uhm, how about this. Ill just write down your name and when i finish watching the movies and such ill give you a pm >< Im almost done and tired of them anyways. And I can get the songs back without a problem (of course from my cds XD) Unless theres other ways without reseting my ipod i would be very grateful.
But, im just wondering, is it possible to get back the movies and songs back from the ipod itself? Im not to sure about it but i was thinking it might be possible with the newer one.<br>

  • Xfce4-power-manager and laptop-mode-tools + backlight problems.

    Cross posted from here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=127992
I don't know which forum it belongs to, so maybe a mod can close the one in the wrong forum.
Out of curiosity, do these two tools conflict with each other? There seems to be some features that do the same thing, ie harddrive spin down time, but I'm not sure if these two will try to kill each other trying to configure the same power settings. If they do conflict, how could I go about disabling the conflicting parts (on either)? laptop-mode-tools claims it needs acpid "for ACPI support", however, acpid seems to be grabbing the standby event and throwing the laptop in standby despite the standby button bound to do nothing in xfce-power-manager. If I take out acpid, does that mean laptop-mode will no longer detect acpi events such as connecting/disconnecting AC power and thus not change modes when its plugged in?
Another problem I've had after installing xfce4-power-manager is that when I use the brightness hotkeys the backlight gets stuck and starts flashing, locking up the system until I force shutdown. However, I can use the brightness plugin without trouble at all. What's causing the power manager to screw up setting the brightness since it clearly seems to work otherwise.

It is easier to close this one and move the other thread over here. Just continue there.
BTW better use the Report button when you want to have a thread of yours moved to another forum. That way it is guaranteed a mod will see this in time. And you never need to cross post.

  • Pavilion DV9008NR BIOS problem Windows 8 32-bit

I have an older Pavilion DV9008NR notebook:
    RAM - 2 GB RAM
    CPU - Athlon Turion 64 x2 1.6 GHz TL-50
    Motherboard - Quanta 30B9
    Chipset - NVDIA GeForce 6150
Southbridge - NVIDIA NForce 410/430 MCP
    BIOS HP F.43 3/22/2010
Nvidia GPU - GeForce Go 6150 (UMA)  (display adapter MS Bsic Disply Adapter C52 A.2
This was previously loaded with WinXP SP3 and slipstreamed with nLite 1.42 to load SATA drivers.  It had previously had the BIOS flashed to F.43 (latest version).
It was "clean" upgraded with Windows 8 Pro Upgrade after passing all tests.
Upon rebooting, I got the  standard HP/Phoenix BIOS screen with the usual prompts for <F10> BIOS Setup and <Esc> Boot Order.
Every time after that, the <F10> and <Esc> prompts are gone, and Win8 loads *faster* than usual.
Win 8 functionality appears fine, and the need Ricoh 5-in-1 and NVIDIA coprocesser drivers loaded without difficulty.
I went back to my old WinXP image, and BIOS loaded several times normally with <F10> and <Esc> prompts.
After reloading Win8, back to problem of no prompts after first reboot.
Trying <F10> or <Esc> during the BIOS load does *not* get you into BIOS Setup or Boot Order.
It appears that somewhere that Win8 is "pre-empting" the normal "flow" of the BIOS.
I do understand that Win8 does have some feature to take control to keep  Boot Sector malware from taking control.
Is this what is happening?  (Which becomes a real problem with <F10> and <Esc> maybe needed),
Is this a BIOS bug, or
    Is there something else.
    Thanks~

I'm sorry but this was very difficult to read. If I understand you are having an issue installing Windows 8 32-bit. Is this right?
If so this is not supported as per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5628. Specifically: "If you need to use a 32-bit version, you need to use Boot Camp 4 Support Software, and you must use Windows 7. 32-bit versions of Windows 8 are not supported via Boot Camp."

  • 24" iMac backlight problem

I've had my 24" imac for about 6 months. This morning when I switched it on the lower half of the backlight has not switched on (so the screen is dim at the bottom, and bright at the top).
If I put the computer to 'sleep', when I wake it, the bottom half of the backlight flashes on to normal brightness for about 3 seconds then switches off again.
..I'm assuming this can only be a hardware issue?!

Sounds like a hardware problem. However, you can try this procedure to reset the SMC (which controls power management in the iMac)

If it's only six-months old, it's still covered by warranty. If there's an Apple Store nearby, take it in. You can make a reservation for the Genius Bar at

  • Lenovo T61 Backlight Problem !

Hi, so i bought a notebook Lenovo T61 last year in september. The model is 6459CTO with a 15.4 WSXGA screen. This is how it shows on the packing list.
    15.4 WSXGA- TFT
So 25 days after warranty expired the notebook screen died. How **bleep**ty is that ? When i turn on the notebook, i only see very dim thinkpad on the screen and then it gets completely dark. After researching, I am quite sure its either the inverter or the backlight. Since i am a college student i cant really afford getting it fixed so i have to do it myself.
Can anyone help me find the backlight ? I tried finding the backlight online but no success. Also it would be great if someone knows how to open up the notebook LCD and replace the backlight. I have all the required tools including the solder. Please help me out !!! Thanks

    Welcome to the forum!
Before you start pulling that T61 apart, let's review a couple of things:
    a) Does it have Intel or nVidia graphics?
    b) Does it display anything on external monitor?
    c) Was the LCD reddish/pinkish on initial boot before this last episode?
While it may very well be the inverter or backlight (more likely) you may also be looking at a motherboard problem. That's why I'm asking whether the machine displays on external monitor.
Replacing a backlight is NOT a job for a novice, take it from someone who's done it in the past but chooses to have it done by another party nowadays...
Good luck and let us know.
    Cheers,
    George

  • Backlight problem with software updat 1.1 for neno

the new 1.1 software update of 'iPod Updater 2006-01-10' for neno stuffs up the backlight. if i leave the light in always off or always on and try to use (press and hold) menu button to manually switch on and off the back light DOES NOT WORK any more....
    apple pls fix it asap...

    heres wats new with 1.1-
    1. holding menu will take you to the main menu instead of activating or deactivating the backlight
    2. lyrics and album art staying on screen and not disappearing after 10 seconds
    3. Apple Radio Remote support
    4. Line-out problem, occasionally when going from headphones to line-out, there would be no sound.
    5. The 'Alarm' feature has been overhauled, easier to set the time, and a little bell icon is displayed next to the 'Alarm' menu item when it is set.
    6. 'Screen-lock' has also been changed, slightly different interface, the numbers are in sunken boxes as opposed to the red glow. And a new warning is given telling you to hook your Nano up to your comp if you forget your code.
    7. There was a problem with turning off, if you scrolled back or forward through a playlist/album, back to the main menu, sometimes it would not turn off.
    8. The song title is in bold above the lyrics when you go to the lyrics screen
    9. itunes opens almost instantly (within a second or 2) with the ipod showing. Before, this used to take 5-10 seconds, maybe more.
    10. Reduced lag, before, when scrolling and clicking quickly through menus and songs, had some 'slow down', this is gone now.
    11. Before the update I noticed a lag when I would skip songs, the next song would come on but the tags would have a slight lag on them and that has been fixed as well.
    12. More accurate battery meter. Doesn't go down too quickly as it used too. One person said that it actually increases battery life after a testing.
    13. When using the Universal dock with remote the backlight will come on after you change the volume, before the backlight remained off.

  • Screen or backlight problem - washed-out colors, fuzzy white overlay

I've had my iPod for quite a long time now and have been living with this problem for at least a year. Some times, when I start using the iPod, the screen gets all washed-out with a fuzzy white overlay. It looks fine when the backlight turns off from not touching it, so I think the problem might be with the backlight. If I completely recharge the iPod, letting it fully turn off, the screen will usually come back to clarity. Also, if I leave it in the refrigerator for a while, that too will often solve the problem.
The fuzziness usually happens after having the iPod go to sleep - either from me pressing and holding the pause button, or from the songs being stopped or paused and the iPod not being used for a time. I don't recall, but it might also happen when playing if it's been playing for a fair time and the backlight has been off. It seems like, if the iPod goes into sleep mode when it is warm - room temperature or greater seems to do it - it's fuzzy the next time I start using it. Having it fix itself from being outside in the cold, in the refrigerator or in the basement seems to suggest it as being a heat-related problem.
So, what part do you think is causing this problem? A light? The screen? A chip or connection somewhere?
Are there others out there with this problem? It's rather upsetting, as I like to watch videos and play games on it but I can't rely on it having a clear screen.

All the things that my iPod has been through (in no particular order):
    - Age; I've had the iPod pretty much since they came out
    - Manufacturing problem or Firmware update bugs; I've survived a multitude of problems in the past (seemingly bricked being stuck in a loop of trying to turn on, the videos don't play video or sound problem, the not-recognised-by-iTunes problem, not being recognised by the iPod updater)
    - Slight bending and pressure from by carrying it in my pants pockets (front and back) on occasion over the years
    - Damage from being dropped on occasion
    - Possible damage from being used in a hot, smokey environment for months
    - Being exposed to heat or static from fuzzy jacket pockets
    - Being exposed to heat from my waterbed
    - Being exposed to cold over some very cold winter days
    - Pressure and scratching from a plastic shell I bought to protect it, which turned out to be a very bad idea as it caused many scratches to the screen and may have been too tight as the lcd was showing distortion with it on
    - Probably got some water on it a few times
Thinking back to when I first had this problem, the causes may be one of:
    - Possible damage from being used in a hot, smokey environment for months
    - Being exposed to heat or static from fuzzy jacket pockets
    - Being exposed to cold over some very cold winter days
    - Probably got some water on it a few times
    - Age; I've had the iPod pretty much since they came out
