Pavilion boot help

we have a pavilion zv5000 and upon trying to start today we get nothing except some horizontal line flash up then a screen with hundreds of white dots arranged in squares, tried a hard reset , tried to enter bios but nothing is working or changing what happens.
Please any advice?
Martin

Try re-seating the memory modules, remove and re-insert them a few times to clean the contacts.
It could be some serious hardware failure that would need to be diagnosed by a professional also.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
I recommend that you attempt to boot into Safe Mode:
KB17877 How to start a BlackBerry smartphone in Safe Mode
It may take you multiple attempts to get the ESC key sequence (press/release/hold) correct, so be patient. When successfully into Safe Mode, see what happens.
If the behavior ceases, then think carefully...what happened just before this behavior started? A new app? An update? A Theme? Something else? Think carefully as the smallest change could be causal...and attempt to undo whatever that was.
But if the behavior continues in Safe Mode, then you may need to consider more drastic actions -- WIPE, OS Reload, BBSAK Wipe/Reload, and the "Bare Bones" OS Reload Process. To prepare, you should be sure that you have a full backup to your PC...please review the Backup link in my auto-sig on this post for instructions.

  • Error "Building boot caches on boot helper partition failed" when installing Yosemite

I Have a MacBook Pro 8,3 17" and have been running OSX Maverick 10.9.5 quite happily.  I finally decided to bite the bullet and update to OSX 10.10.1.  I went through the App Store and clicked install on the Yosemite offered there.
THe install took about 55 mins and then right at the end it reported: Building boot caches on boot helper partition failed, install failed.
now i can't boot normally or restore from my time machine backup.
    can anybody suggest a fix?

Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

Do you have both W7 and W8 on the iMac? If not, depending on your specific Mac model/year, the correct Bootcamp drivers can be downloaded and installed in W8/Bootcamp.
You can download the appropriate drivers by using Bootcamp Assistant and put them on a USB drive.

HP Pavilion dv6-3060SA is not starting up, tried hard boot but still no solution. The charger is OK. The problem is no LED blink on power connect as well no starting up of Laptop. Please help.

If you have another Mac, use Target Disk Mode. Connect your Mac to the other Mac using a Thunderbolt or FireWire cable, and hold down the T key while booting up on the problematic Mac. If you go into Finder on the other Mac, the first one's hard drive should show up as a disk.

  • Dv7-4157cl Entertainment Laptop - Boot help

Normally I would be the guy to offer help, find answers and type in steps to get to a remedy, but not tonight.
The laptop's S.M.A.R.T. hard drive routine has detected an imminent failure and so we have made a set of Recovery disks, but I also want to access the machine in order to check the "Event Viewer" logs BEFORE wiping it and/or replacing the hard drive.
Problem is <F2> for the S.M.A.R.T. error keeps coming up and I cannot get <F9>, <F10> or <ESC> to allow me to Boot from CD!  I need to do that first because there is another utility program I want to run.
    Does anyone know how to:
    (A) Surpress the hard drive S.M.A.R.T. (imminent failure) message, or ...
    (B) Get to the BIOS Configuration menu and make the necessary changes to access the Boot options on EVERY start-up?
    Oh what a bother...
    Thanks very much in advance!

Sorry, I think I have solved the issue!
Watch closely for <F2> to Run the Diagnostics and <Enter> to Continue Start-up.  Press <Enter> and then go for <Esc> or <F10> really fast!  I finally got the BIOS setup screen to appear and this may have been a case of fingers moving faster than the old brain.
Next I configured the post POST delay to 15 seconds from it previous value of "0" and this helps get to a screen where I can boot the CD utility I wanted.
Sheesh, it is tough being your own worst enemy sometimes...

  • Graphics/Video Card [REPLACEMENT / UPGRADE] on HP Pavilion Desktop - Help

    I have the following:
    HP Pavilion Elite m9152p Desktop
Upgraded to Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (upgraded 11-2009)
The video card seems to have gone out and I have tried the following:
    Reinstalling Operating system
Uninstalled & Reinstalled & Rollback drivers
Prior to the above attempts, no changes had been made to software or hardware only leading to the same result: The video seems to be fine and then it freezes and crashes and ultimately has to have a hard-restart at which point, the computer loads the onboard video/graphics.
I need to purchase a replacement video/graphics card, but I am unsure what specs I need to be aware of or what my computer can handle as far as a replacement and maybe a possible upgrade (not necessary) - any help in this regard would be most appreciated.
    Thanks!
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

I think it is a good choice.
The reviews seem positive for the most part including that the fan appears to be quiet.
I don't know if your previous card had HDMI.
When you install your new video card, it may disable your onboard audio due to the HDMI audio chip on the video card.
If you do lose your onboard audio, after you install the video drivers, reboot the machine, go into the BIOS, find the onboard audio setting. It may be set to Auto or Disabled. Change the setting to Enabled. Save the setting where you made the change and again when you exit the BIOS.
Upon reboot you will have your onboard audio back.
Looking forward to hearing back from you.

  • K8T Neo F1S2R No Longer Boots - Help Diagnosing

    Hello,
I've had good service from my K8T Neo Athlon 64 mobo for 2 years. Today when I turned on the PC, all the fans cranked up and nothing more. The four test LEDs stayed red. No beeps, no display to the monitor. The light on one CD drive (I have 2) and the HD light come on solid at power up. According to the manual, four red LEDs at power up indicates a bad processor or processor connection and nothing more.
I removed my Audigy sound card since I know it has been known to cause boot-up problems on these boards. Still no boot.
What I need to know is if this is most likely a bad processor as stated in the manual, or something else like a bad mobo or power supply (Enermax). I don't have a spare processor, 64 bit PC, nor power supply to swap and check, so I need to know what is the best step process to resolving the problem. I'd just hate to go out and buy a new processor to find out the problem isn't the processor.
    Thanks!
    Buddy

UPDATE: Kudos to MSI support! I RMAed my original failed, over 2 year old K8T NEO via the MSI online support system. Shipped the K8T back to MSI on 4/11 and received a replacement on 4/26. It took only 11 business days, east coast to west coast and back.
I was having stability issues with the new K8MM-V motherboard described here https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=95656.0
in that I was unable to run my Radeon 9800 Pro at "full" hardware acceleration without crashes. I could only get stability using the onboard graphics or setting the Radeon 9800 to "low" hardware acceleration (the setting next to "none").
Pulled out the K8MM-V and installed the warranty replacement K8T NEO. The replacement K8T booted flawless, only requiring reinstallation of the Radeon 9800 Pro's Omega drivers on the first boot. I've had flawless performance with hardware graphics acceleration set at "full" with no reboots or blackouts since.
It was easy as pie to execute warranty service with MSI.
A big thank you to MSI for their fine support and for providing this forum....and a just as big thank you to all the fine folks here for offerering their expertise and help to us novices.

  • Macbook Pro on 10.6.8 won't boot, Help!

I have a 2007 Macbook Pro 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo with 4 gigs of Ram that was running just fine until I left for a weekend away.  When I got home and tried to boot it up it gave me the "universal stop sign" circle with line thru it and wouldn't boot past that screen.  I had problems with the Ram going bad before so I tried putting the stock Ram in it but nothing different happened.  I tried rebooting my pram and also booting in safe mode, none of which worked.  I had a disk of 10.6.3 and am able to boot from that.  I went to disk utility from the DVD which when I tried to verify it it said that I had an issue that needed to be repaired.  I ran the repairs and while it said it fixed them when I verify it again it still says that It needs to be repaired.  So basically i've come to the conclusion that I either need to erase my harddrive and reinstall or maybe someone from this forum can help.
If I need to reinstall I guess thats what i'll have to do but my questions are as follows:
    1.  Since I have the DVD of  10.6.3 do I need to do a fresh reinstall of that and then do all the system updates to get me back to 10.6.8 BEFORE I do my Time Machine restore?  Or can I restore from Time Machine when its still at 10.6.3?
    2.  If I restore from Timemachine will it also restore all my Apps?  Or do I need to reinstall them from my disks and the things I purchased from the internet? (I hope not!!)
    3.  I noticed an option when I booted from 10.6.3 DVD that you can restore from a Time machine backup... will that fix the issues that my computer is having with trying to boot up or not?  If I try this option and it doesn't work is that going to mess up my Time Machine backup or will it not effect that?
Sorry for all the questions but I hope someone can enlighten me on these issues.  Thanks

Just to add a little more info to the story I had upgraded my Hard drive from a 5400 RPM 250gig model that came with the computer to one that was made by Seagate and installed in 2011, 7200 RPM 750 gigs.  Is it normal to fail after not even 2 years?
When I try to repair the Disk using Disk Repair I get the Error Message "Invalid content in Journal."  Can anyone enlighten me to what this means?  Trying to repair the disk does not resolve this issue.
Also trying to start in single user mode and run fsck failed and I got a bunch of error messages that ran on a continuous loop.

  • MBP crash during 10.4.11 update, KERNEL PANIC, WON'T BOOT, HELP.

Attempted update to 10.4.11 via Software Update. Machine crashed (screen went black, nothing made the machine responsive). Forced power down, powered back up, "need to restart computer". Great.
Disk Warrior rebuild, permissions repair, restart, KERNEL PANIC. Boot from OSX install disc and am greeted with "unable to install software on this computer" giving two options to restart or select startup disk. No matter, ran disk utility, repaired disk, repaired permissions, restart via Macintosh HD, KERNEL PANIC!!!!!!!!!!! UGH.
Now what?? I can use target disk mode to backup contents of computer to another but I really don't want to go to the extent of reinstalling OSX and reloading my data to the machine from the backup. Any ideas? Need to figure this out before tomorrow, any help is appreciated.

Assuming this doesn't resolve the issue, what's the procedure for reinstalling OSX AND keeping my data intact? Can backup everything using target disk mode, just don't know how to re-load it once reinstalled.
Or even if there's a way to reinstall OSX without having to backup the data and re-load it. Thanks

  • Ugh/ kernal panics / apple hardware test will not boot / help

so my first thought is to replace all my memory and I even have some coming via OWC -- but it seems silly just to replace memory on a hunch and randomly. So I run rember and get an all cler on all my memory. Can this really be soo? So I think - try the Apple Hardware Test.
I hold down c key as 'puter is booting and I get command line screen that says
    "invalid memory ascess at %srr0:ae0c0108
    %srr1: 0c01086F
    bad bus info crc-16"
than it tells me to type in mac-boot to boot --but it will not boot - the next screen just says command line ok
    what should I do next
this machine has been acting up for over 6 months and its driving me nuts -- I bought the memory as a "quick fix" but now I am starting to have my doubts. It would be cool to know before I decide to install it so I can return it for my $ if my hunch is wrong --
    help! and thanks!

I can give you some general advice about buying memory:
The question then becomes what if memtest passes it all... I couldn't complete the cloning of about 220 GB of files from one drive to another with the original MacWarehouse chips in place, but could when they were removed.
I have had quite a bit of experience testing memory, most of it grey market stuff that I salvage from trash cans and such like place. I have found some memory that worked perfectly and never gave me any problems. I have found some memory that gave me kernel panics. I have found some memory that are somewheres in between: they seem fine at first, and then when you start to run lots of apps or copy large files that's when the problems shows up, and the problems are subtle -- once in a while a task would randomly crash, but restarting the task would make it OK, etc., etc.
I've had a PC133 stick that repeatedly tested and passed on memtest until the 4th pass, then an error showed. After the error showed, there were lots of errors.
For my own use, I do not use any memory that fails memtest at all, since I am swimming in memory anyway. I usually test them overnight. Certainly when buying new memory I expect them not to fail memtest when run overnight (usually about 6-7 passes).
I'll use memory that fail occasionally in client stations that are not function critical, but my experience has been once you get some error in a memory chip, it gets worse with time.
I want to avoid if possible having the machine down for hours at a time to run memtest in Single User mode as it's serving up genealogy databases on 4 different domains, as well as static pages on 8 other domains as well as being my every day work-a-Mac.
If you're serious about hosting those domains, I suggest you buy a Mac Mini for your clientstation and let the server be the server.
sending CL3 chips maybe the Apple Hardware Test is expecting to see CL2.5 which is what the 3 chips I have to do work are.
CL3-PC3200 chips can pinch hit for CL2.5-PC2700 chips in some limited circumstances, but they were sending you CL3-PC2700 chips in place of CL2.5-PC2700 chips. I smell herring.
or are they really not the chips the label says they are?
Chips are sometimes mislabeled, due to operator error.

  • New iMac boot help

So I bought the 2.66GHz, 20-inch iMac yesterday from a JB Hi-Fi outlet and got the RAM upgraded from 2 to 4 gig which was performed in store and seemed fine. When I got the computer home, set it up according to the user manual (just to be sure) and switched it on I got the boot tone, the Apple logo and the load symbol. It stayed this way for a good hour and a half.
On online advice I restarted the Mac and inserted the back-up disc that came with it. The Install OS applicaiton came up and allowed me to check and install the first disc after which it stated that it needed to restart and to have the second disc ready when it did so. After a couple of minutes it turned to the +grey screen of death+ and remained that way. Now when I (manually) restart it all I can get is the option to install the first disc (which it has swallowed).
What I want to know is, is this the fault of the hardware, the store, the guy who installed the RAM, me for turning it on etc. and what the best action to take would be? Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello,
Is this JB Hi-Fi outlet Apple certified? Is it possible this is a refurbished machine?
Try running the *Apple Hardware Test*: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
It's possible the RAM that was installed, wasn't installed properly. Go here for help..
    http://www.tuaw.com/2006/01/27/intel-imac-easiest-ram-install-ever/
*You can try ejecting the disk using Firmware:*
To eject a disc using firmware:
    Restart the computer.
When you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Command-Option-O-F keys. (The Command key has an Apple on it.)
Release the keys when you see a white welcome screen.
    At the prompt, type:
    eject cd
Press Return, then wait a few seconds. The disc drive should eject the disc, and "ok" appears on the screen when the action is complete.
    Type:
    mac-boot
    Press Return.
Your computer starts up normally and you see the familiar Mac OS X desktop.
If the iMac continues to give you problems, you should definitely take it back, get your money back and buy from an Apple store, or an Apple reseller. Make certain they are Apple Certified.

  • New motherboard faulty boot help needed urgently

So i just baught my new amd athlon  64 3000 +with a msi k8mm3 mainboared. when i finshed installing it and booted it up it detects both hard drives and all the memory. then it says "loading dmi pool .........." then the maxtor drive overlay splash appears. after that it goes to where you can select to start in safe mode and what ever you select it loads for a second and then restarts and does the same thing again. i've tried changing the power supply, leads, reset the cmos and unplugged all unnessery equipment but it still does it. any help will be appreciated.
    here's my spec
HD (1) western digital 40gb  (windows xp home OS installed)
    HD (2) maxtor 200gb
ATI radeon 9600xt 256mb graphics card
    350 watt power supply
    cd rom
    floppy

If this is a current system in where you had Windows installed and you just replaced those parts, then you will have to do a repair/install of windows due to different chipset drivers and whatnot. This might prevent you from having to do a complete format/re-install. Otherwise you might have to completely format your system. No other way around it.

  • Apple Powerbook3 doesn't boot - help!!

    Hi Everyone,
I'm a new apple user since i got this old computer - Apple Powerbook3.
This is the background so far:
I bought the powercord since it came without it. And i connected to the laptop. Then the computer doesn't boot it makes a sound at the beginning and then stays on the gray screen. So i found that when click "z" it goes to a "Open Firmware"; and says: "to continue booting, type "mac-boot" and press return" and to shut down, type: "shut-down".
I did type "mac-boot" and it goes to the gray screen and nothing happend.
This is all what i know, Can somebody let me know what can i do next or what to do?
    Thanks!!!
