Pavilion dv4-1220us quickly draining battery?

I just bought a dv4-1220us today (1/4/2008) and have noticed that the battery life stinks. I charged it up completely and then unplugged it to see what kind of battery life I would get... I was replacing my Dell whose battery recently kicked the bucket and got less than an hour so I was excited for a NEW laptop with a decent battery.
Within 10 minutes of unplugging it, the battery was at 95%, which definitely had me worried. Within an hour, the computer shut down because the battery was completely drained. Hoping that it was some first-time charge fluke, I charged it up again and unplugged it. It was 100% when I looked first and within a few minutes, it was already down to 98%. Right now it's at 85% and I haven't even had it on more than 15 minutes.
Should a battery on a brand new laptop go so quickly like that? I'm not running any big programs - all I have is an internet window open - so I can't figure out why it would be running down so fast. I think it's pretty crazy that my 2.5 year old Dell battery can outlast a battery in a computer that was just removed from the box this afternoon.
Is this something that I should contact HP about? Would they replace the battery?
Thanks

Have you checked the power setting? Click on the little battery symbol in the lower right part of your screen. There are three choices, balanced, power saver and high performance. If you have it set to high performance you will go through your battery very quickly. Power saver makes you machine run a bit sluggish. Balanced is preferred for battery power. You can also check the power settings through control panel. You can configure your monitor to dim on battery power thereby saving lots of juice. I have a new dv7 with 17 inch screen running several applications and still get a couple hours out of the battery. In fact I was able to watch an entire movie on battery power and still have power to spare. Of course I did spend the extra to get the high capacity battery for my system.
Check you power settings to see if there are changes you can make there first. If you are still having a problem then contact HP. If it is a new machine they might well replace the battery for you.

  • HTC one M8 keeps getting hot and quickly draining battery, anyone else experienced this?

every couple of days my HTC one M8 gets hot to the touch and I noticed the batter display may show as high as 90% but it will die with in 5 minutes,  one time i restarted it and it showed 30% battery left.  i'm thinking the battery is already going bad even though the phone is only a  few months old, any other ideas?  I did check and nothing is running in the back ground.  I stopped playing any games after it did it once and it's done it several time since so don't think its a game / app issue.    thanks!

        Hello xonnia!

  • When I access the "music" app it appears to be accessing the internet constantly even with "match" turned off.  Is this normal? Draining battery?

I have an iphone 4s and I've had what I think is a quickly draining battery.  I've tried all the usual stuff with looking at "location" services, reducing the "push" emails, etc.  In the process, I decided to turn off "itunes match."  Still, I notice whenever I'm in the "Music" app, not even playing music, the iphone indicates internet activity with the circular wheel.  If I exit, it stops.  It constantly is moving when I'm in music.
Is this normal?  It seems to be draining the battery.
I've tried to re-boot, I've tried to re-store, and it still is constantly "going" even if I'm not playing music.
    What is up with this?
    Advice?
    Thanks.

More info.  I did a "reset" to all settings, this left itunes match off.  But, when I went into the music app, looked at the "songs" tab, all of my songs (including those "in the cloud) were there.  It was then that the "internet" symbol looked like it was syncing again, even though I had "match" off.   Ugh...I guess I'll need to set this up as new phone to see if I can avoid this constant draining of the battery when playing music?

  • After Updating the iOS 7.04 on my iPhone 4s drain battery quickly on standby mode & also doesn't respond volume up button, why?

After Updating the iOS 7.04 on my iPhone 4S drain battery quickly even on standby mode & also doesn't respond volume up button, why?

My battery problem woes continues to persist.  Yesterday, I had about 85-90% battery life in the morning.  A couple hours later when I looked at the phone it was down to 65%.  At that point, I shut off wi-fi, bluetooth, and background app refresh.  I received one call shortly after that.  The call lasted about two minutes.  My battery was now down to 40%.  Another hour later, down to 16%!  Here's the kicker:  I plugged in the phone to a charger and it jumped to 65% in a matter of minutes.  I unplugged the phone and within a couple of hours it was back down to around 30%.  I plugged it in again and within 10 minutes it was up to 75%.
At first glance it looks very much like a hardware issue.  However, I never had this problem until I upgraded to 7.0.4.  Also, the above battery roller coaster ride isn't a constant.  That is, it seems that only sometimes this happens.  So...I'm thinking it's either an app running in the background eating up juice (though I have Background App Referesh turned off) or the iOS is buggy.

  • Battery on Pavilion DV4 only last 1 hour. Suggestions?

Battery on Pavilion DV4 only last 1 hour. Suggestions?

+When I brought up an issue regarding Win XP at the Genius Bar, I was just told "oh that's a Win issue, talk to Microsoft."+
Wow, perhaps the "genius" title is a little over-zealous. Windows interfaces with hardware using the drivers provided usually by the hardware manufacturer. The problem is most definitely the boot camp drivers, which were created by Apple, not Microsoft. Either they are simply in some kind of "beta" stage or Apple purposely did not build decent power management into them. I'm half wondering if this is some kind of "bait-and-switch" tactic. They promise the benefits of dual OS's with bootcamp but then make is so you never really want to run Windows because it will suck your battery down in nothing flat! And the funny thing is it's sort of working in my case. I've resorted to running VMWare Fusion rather than booting to Windows and I can get much longer battery life. But if I'm doing some serious work in XP I'd much rather boot to it natively so this is really pretty disappointing and not at all what I was expecting. Apple, PLEASE fix your drivers. You have nothing to lose. If anything, you might get more IT people like me buying Macbook's if it's known that they run Windows as well or better than most other laptops. Our new Dell Latitudes can get 5-6 hrs with a 9-cell battery. Hard to justify replacing that with a system that goes dead in 1 hour!

    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

The missing apps could have been done by setting the Restrictions that can hid those apps. If the backup was made with those retrictions set the the Restrictions are also restored.

  • HP Pavilion dv4 notepad not booting. NEED Help!!!

    Hi There,
I have HP Pavilion DV4. For some odd reason, when I turn on my notepad, I just get one flash of power light, volume indicating light, num lock light, caps lock light, and screen stays blank. Notepad doesn't boot but power light keeps flashing.
Initially I thought maybe my battery was low, so I plugged in the AC adaptor overnight and in morning it behaved the same way. I have tried all solutions suggested in blogs all over (including removing AC adaptor and battery and hold down power button for a minute, etc.) I am still not able to get my notepad to turn on. I have even tried to have it plugged in for few days, but I get the same thing from it.
I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help me out with this issue.
    Thanks.

Have you tried to start it with just the power adaptor connected and the battery removed? Have you disconnected all external devices that may be attached to the notebook?

  • I just replaced the hard drive on my Pavilion dv4 and now my screen wont turn on.

Ok so my original hard drive in my HP Pavilion dv4 shot craps last week so I bought a new WD 500 gig for it. Prior to removing the old drive and installing the new drive my screen would light up and work properly. Now that I have replaced the drive my computer seems to be booting up but my screen does nothing but stay completely black. I know my drive is installed correctly and I'm pretty sure I haven't jarred ne thing loose in the process of changing out the drive because I only opened up the hard drive compartment to do the swap, which was extremely simple. I also was sure to remove the battery, unplug, and ground out ne static electricity before doing ne work on my computer. Im at a loss for what to try to get my computer back in working order. Ne suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for ur quick reply to my problem. I tried all of that with no results... I did notice tho that the lights next to and above my caps lock key and my num lk key are now flashing. They flash in unison three times then there is a two second pause then they flash three more times and this repeats. They may have been doing this before I tried this solution but I did not take notice until now... I was also wondering how I am supposed to know, after pressing f10 to enter bios, how I can tell if my new drive is being detected when my monitor will not function? Was pressing f10 supposed to possibly make the monitor turn on? In a last ditch effort to try and further identify the problem, I re installed my old drive. Before replacing it my computer would begin to boot then display a hard error that would not allow me to continue booting and run Windows. My display would still work but I could not run Windows. After re installing the drive the monitor will not turn on. I'm beginning to think that I have a bad monitor. Is there a way of testing this with out buying one? Where does the monitor connect to the mother board? I wonder if maybe its been jarred loose, although I highly doubt it, it may still be worth looking at. Thanks again for your advice.

  • Touchpad doesn't work - HP Pavilion DV4 - 2120ca

    Re: Pavilion DV4-2120ca
Touchpad doesn't work after cleaning out the dust collection in the fan, heat sink area.  New Therma paste was applied.
Both the keyboard & touchpad were the 2 things that didn't work following reassembly.  The keyboard didn't work but able to use USB wireless mouse.  Couple days ago the replacement battery finally arrived, installed and charged for 12 hours.  After restart, the keyboard works as it should.
Unfortunately, touchpad still doesn't work. The light switch above the touchpad works, clicking on it turns white & amber but any movement scrolling doesn't work.
We tried the following, but unsuccessful
    double tapping top left corner
    Hard Reset
Uninstalled ALPS & Synaptics -- reinstalled , restarted
    Updated Windows, HP, BIOS, Drivers
Don't recall during reassembly if touchpad has a cable or connector.  If so, perhaps worth try to disconnect & reconnect to ensure correct connection.
What do u advise to try next?
    Thank u
    ~ Gayle ~

Did you connect the ribbon cable for the Touchpad. Often times there is one for the keyboard and one for the touchpad separately. Hopefully you have not damaged the ribbon cable. Just make sure you push it all the way in and seat it properly.

  • HP Pavilion dv4 will not start up

Hi! I am hoping someone can help me. My friend has an HP Pavilion dv4--2045dx  running Windows 7 and it will not start up. Once it is turned on the hp logo appears for a quick second and then a black screen with a blinking cursor in the left, top corner comes up. If I press ctrl alt del and then esc I can get into the menu for F1, F2, F11 etc. I have run and passed all of the system diagnostics tests (Start up, Memory and Hard Drive). I have tried to reset the BIOS to default condition and also tried to connect the laptop to my TV to see if it was the screen that doesn't work, but it wasn't. I tried a hard reset also. When I press F11 for a system recovery, nothing happens. It just goes right back to the black screen with blinking cursor. All of the other F-keys work and I am able to pull up screens for each, except the F11 key.
I am not very computer literate but am trying everything I can think of to get it back to factory settings or system recovery. If anybody out there has any idea what I'm talking about (I'm not sure I even do) please please give me some suggestions!!
I tried to write all of the information I can think of, but if you have any questions about the issue I'll be glad to answer what I can!
Any suggestions/help are GREATLY appreciated!! Thanks in advance for any thoughts you may share!!

    Hi,
Try the following to see if the Hard Drive is accessible.  The Ubuntu operating system CD you create can run from the CD alone ( ie it doesn't have to install on the Hard Drive )  When you've created the CD, follow the rest of the instructions and see if you can access the HDD - you may want to back up your existing files if you can.
