Pavilion dv7-4070us Fail short DST (Failure ID PKVV5g-5525T4-XD003G-60QN03)

Hi,
Last year I bought the HP Pavilion dv7-4070us laptop, running windows 7 64bit. Everything has been fine and dandy until recently. The past few days I have only been watching youtube videos and TV series, when one day I turn on my computer to find that it stays on the Windows 7 splash screen for an abnormal amount of time. This had happened to me once before, but for some weird reason, ( FYI: I am tech savvy, so this issue was a bit bizarre) it was fixed last time. However, unlike last time, the issue has not been resolved, loading time still takes like 5 min or more. Additionally when I ran the system diagnostics test, the hard drive failed the short DST with the failure id:  PKVV5g-5525T4-XD003G-60QN03.
Additionally I ran the seagate (samsung has "teamed" up with seagate) hard drive diagnostic with the same result, short DST failure, but long generic and short generic and smart is verified and passed. So I was wondering if anyone had this similar issue, and how were you able to resolve the situation. Again, the only thing I have done recently is only go on the internet to view youtube and TV series/drama, the only possible changes could be windows update. Other than that I really have not tinkered around with the system.
Searching high and low, it looks like I may have to replace the hard drive. However I am hoping to not have to do this since the warranty had just expired a couple months ago. If anyone could please respond or help I would immensely appreciate it! Happy Holidays.
P.S.. Should you require more relevant information, just ask. Thanks again!

  • Several questions regarding an upgrade or replacement hard drive. Short dst failure error.

    HP Pavilion DV6z-2100
    Windows 7 64-bit
    Short-DST failure error
    1) I'm wondering if I can upgrade my hard drive to a 1TB and/or a 10,000rpm instead of the 500GB 7200rpm.  Would there be any problems for either upgrade? What effect will the rpm's have (5400/7200/10000) and how do I decide which is best for me? Can I change from HDD to SDD?  Can I change brands?  What size (in inches or cm) must the new hard drive be?  (See hard drive info below.)
    2) I believe I can access (and open) all my files on the failing 500GB HDD.  I want to install a second OS (Ubuntu) on my new hard drive, and I think the best way to do it would be to put Ubuntu on another partition. How would I go about copying my files to the new hard drive without losing any data and keeping my Win7 license?  How would/should I partition the new hard drive?  I can boot Ubuntu via a flash drive--can I make a Win7 recovery disk if Win7 won't boot?
    3) How urgent is getting my files off the short-dst error hard drive?

Any first generation SATA 9.5-mm, 6.35-cm (2.50-inch) hard drive should work without issue. I do recommend that you use the Tune-Up utility in the HP Support Assistant to update your BIOS.

  • HP Pavilion Model G4-1315DX Short DST : Failed

I have tried starting my computer numerous times and everytime it gets stuck on the windows startup screen.
I ran a quick start up test on it and everything passes besides the short DST.

I have no idea what I need to do in order to get this fixed... Someone help?

You will need to purchase a new hard drive and install it. Boot with Recovery Disks to install Windows and you are back up and running. You have a 500gb hard drive and will need to get one at least that capacity in order to use Recovery Disks.
If you don't have Recovery Disks you can order for a nominal fee. Scroll down on the list of Drivers to see the option to order Recovery Media:

  • Installing OEL on pavilion dv7 4054CA failing with kernel panic

I am trying to install OEL 4.8 (5.5 gives errors too but not as details as 4.8 )on pavilion dv7 4054CA I7 4-core/8 thread laptop but the installation terminates shortly with kernel panic. I gathered the below errors from the screen:
    kernel panic - not syncing
    drivers/acpi/ec.c:162
    spin_is_locked on unintiialized spinlock
    acpi-0352
    acpi-1134
    acpi-0691 : *** Error: acpi_ev_ype_dispatch
It looks like a CPU issue. My laptop is brand new and works fine and I want to install Linux on it.
So any one can help on this?
    Thanks.

Oracle Linux, like all Linux for Enterprise systems, was developed for server hardware and will most likely have trouble to fully support laptops or desktop PC systems. Even if you get the system installed, you may run into trouble with proper support for laptop power management, touchpad, video and wireless support.
A good alternative to run Oracle Linux, or Enterprise Linux on a Laptop is Oracle Virtualbox. It allows you to install multiple common operating systems without the need to repartition your harddrive or jeopardize your primary operating system. Virtualbox is free. More info can be found here http://www.virtualbox.org. If you would like to use Linux as your primary OS or dual-boot, better consider a desktop Linux system like Fedora, Ubuntu or SUSE office desktop - you will be much happier with it. Please note that Oracle Express will easily install and support desktop Linux, but Oracle RDBMS does only support Enterprise Linux versions and will require special attention to get installed on Linux desktops.
In order to start OEL from your computer and work-around the issue you are experiencing, you might try to specify boot parameters, such as acpi=ht or acpi=off

  • Short DST failure

Help pages for HP say to contact HP.  I assume my hard drive is failing.  I ran the test because everything started ruunning so slowly.  I then got an overheat error and the computer simply shut down but it was not in a hot ambient room temp.  So I checked everything I could think of, and eventually found the diagnstic.  Here is the info:
    Failure ID:  9AL5BS-5HU71E-MFKR41-60X603
    Product ID: XH002UA#ABA
    Hard Disk 1.
This is a G72 and is not under warranty.  Fan works, I can always here it and it does not seem that an overheat issue is relevant even though it shut down with error code 90D and said it was a heat issue.
    This question was solved.

DST Fail does indeed indicate hdd is dead or dying fast and will need to be replaced. A retail laptop SATA hdd can be used. You will need HP Recovery Media to install Windows & software/drivers to the new hdd.Hopefully you made yours- if not it can be ordered from HP for a small fee.
As for the overhaetting issue-dust,hair,etc can clog vents after some time. Pick up a can of compressed air and blow out all of the vents, ports & opeings in the case to insure good airflow through the case.

You are going to need to replace the drive. It is not terribly difficult or expensive. Post back if you want to try to do it and we can link you to the proper Manual and if you tell us where you live (country) we can tell you where to buy it at a good price.

  • Pavilion dv7-4070us hinge is pulling the casing apart

Link to original thread regarding this SAME issue, now marked READ ONLY. I bought my HP Pavillion dv-7 computer as my retirement gift in 2010. About a year or two after the hinge started to pull the casing apart and the fan at times would not kick in; the computer sometimes was so hot that I could not use it for fear of burning myself.  I brought this to HP's attention and, since it was under warranty, HP made arrangements for me to mail it to a facility in Texas for repair which I did.  How extremely frustating to once again experience the very same problems that evidiently  were never fixed correctly in the first place!  I stumbled upon the above READ ONLY thread to learn that there are numerous others who are experincing the exact same problems as me. It appears as thought HP has known for quite some time that there is a design problem and refused acknowledge it. Upon further reading, it appears as though HP has finally decided to adress these isssues and make the necessary repairs.  I certainly hope this is the case and that HP will repair my computer at no expense to me since the original repair was not effective. I sincerely hope that I will contacted by HP to reslove my issues. Based upon my on going computers problems and HP's response, I will seriously rethink purchasing HP products in the future.

I am having the same problem with my dv7t, it has been pulling apart for the past year. I tightened the screw which fixed the problem for a few weeks but it eventually came lose again. Today when I opened, it split open so much I was afraid I might snap something. I took the case apart to discover that a plastic piece in the hinge as broken and that the screw was so longer held by anything. I then typed by prolem into the forums and instead of learning that this is an isolated incident, I discovered that its a chronic problem. I perfectly understand that there is wear and tear on laptops, I recently replaced my hard drive and have had to change my battery. These things happen. But this is a physical problem that doesn't even have anything to do with the hardware itself and from where I'm standing it looks an awful lot like a defect to have a metal screw screwing into plastic. Is there anything HP can do to help beyond telling me it will cost about $200 to have fixed? Any assistance would be much appreciated.

  • Pavilion dv6z-7000 hard disk short DST failed

I bought this HP Pavilion dv6z-7000 notebook (windows 7 64-bit) in the middle of September as a gift for my cousin who's in China. After I received my computer I found it was always not responding (e.g. When I clicked "my computer", it freezed and showed "not responding" for ~10min). As I was going back to China and there's no time to mail it back to HP for reparing, I reinstalled the system (windows 7 64bit) by myself and it looks fine for a couple of days. But when I came to China and was going to give it to my cousin, it showed the same problem again. Yesterday it got even worse -- it was unable to shut down or start windows.
When I did HP F1 start up tests this morning, each test (Start-up, Run-in, Tuneup, Hard Disk)  failed at Hard Disk Short DST:
    Failure ID: M4GG6W-67V68K-QFPK1F-60QG03,
    Product ID: A3G60AV
I'm wondering whether HP has some service center in China that can repair it for free? Or do I need to bring it back to the US?

    Hi
Incase you have a Global warranty you can get it fixed in China or else you can call HP Technical support and inform the same but the Part will be delivered only to US. The best for you will be to call HP Technical support and check the warranty and then decide.
Let us know how it goes!

    Hi,
The 24 character error code for the short Disk Self Test ( DST ) would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.  This is also consistent with the 'freezing' issue you mention.

  • HP Pavilion - Short DST Error

Recently my laptop has failed to boot up after the BIOS screen after i had ran the windows hard drive defrag. This was the last operation ran on the system before the fail.
After using the system diagnostic tets available i was able to get the error saying it had a Short DST failure.
The error code i got was: q4n6wc-5ls7a1-xd015g-60x303. After searching for this error however i have not been able to find any results.
my hard drive product id: LX272EA#ABU
Any advice on what this error means and how to recover my data from the hard drive if needed?

    Hi Ben,
The 24 character error code for the Disk Self Test ( DST ) would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced - only HP has the software to decode any further details from the error, suffice to say, it's always a failure and sufficient for HP to replace the HDD if the machine is still under warranty.
If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - you can check your warranty status Here.
If you live in the US, contact HP Here.
If you are in another part of the world, start Here.
If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know.
Regarding retrieving the existing data on your HDD, if it's vital to get it, you would be best to seek the services of a company that specialises in data retrieval, however this will be expensive.
Otherwise, here are a couple of options you could try.
    1.  One possible way to try and retrieve your files from a non-booting drive is to follow the process detailed in the link below.  The Ubuntu operating system CD you create can run from the CD alone ( ie it doesn't have to install on the Hard Drive ) and I've often found it to be successful in retrieving data even from a failing Hard Drive.  When you've created the CD, follow the instructions and see if you can back up your existing files.
    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windo...
    2.  Another option would be to remove the HDD, place it in an external caddy - an example is on the link below - connect this to another PC and see if you can access your files.
    External HDD Caddy 2.5".
