Pavilion dv7-4070us hinge is pulling the casing apart

Link to original thread regarding this SAME issue, now marked READ ONLY. I bought my HP Pavillion dv-7 computer as my retirement gift in 2010. About a year or two after the hinge started to pull the casing apart and the fan at times would not kick in; the computer sometimes was so hot that I could not use it for fear of burning myself.  I brought this to HP's attention and, since it was under warranty, HP made arrangements for me to mail it to a facility in Texas for repair which I did.  How extremely frustating to once again experience the very same problems that evidiently  were never fixed correctly in the first place!  I stumbled upon the above READ ONLY thread to learn that there are numerous others who are experincing the exact same problems as me. It appears as thought HP has known for quite some time that there is a design problem and refused acknowledge it. Upon further reading, it appears as though HP has finally decided to adress these isssues and make the necessary repairs.  I certainly hope this is the case and that HP will repair my computer at no expense to me since the original repair was not effective. I sincerely hope that I will contacted by HP to reslove my issues. Based upon my on going computers problems and HP's response, I will seriously rethink purchasing HP products in the future.

I am having the same problem with my dv7t, it has been pulling apart for the past year. I tightened the screw which fixed the problem for a few weeks but it eventually came lose again. Today when I opened, it split open so much I was afraid I might snap something. I took the case apart to discover that a plastic piece in the hinge as broken and that the screw was so longer held by anything. I then typed by prolem into the forums and instead of learning that this is an isolated incident, I discovered that its a chronic problem. I perfectly understand that there is wear and tear on laptops, I recently replaced my hard drive and have had to change my battery. These things happen. But this is a physical problem that doesn't even have anything to do with the hardware itself and from where I'm standing it looks an awful lot like a defect to have a metal screw screwing into plastic. Is there anything HP can do to help beyond telling me it will cost about $200 to have fixed? Any assistance would be much appreciated.

  • Pavilion dv7-4070us Fail short DST (Failure ID PKVV5g-5525T4-XD003G-60QN03)

    Hi,
Last year I bought the HP Pavilion dv7-4070us laptop, running windows 7 64bit. Everything has been fine and dandy until recently. The past few days I have only been watching youtube videos and TV series, when one day I turn on my computer to find that it stays on the Windows 7 splash screen for an abnormal amount of time. This had happened to me once before, but for some weird reason, ( FYI: I am tech savvy, so this issue was a bit bizarre) it was fixed last time. However, unlike last time, the issue has not been resolved, loading time still takes like 5 min or more. Additionally when I ran the system diagnostics test, the hard drive failed the short DST with the failure id:  PKVV5g-5525T4-XD003G-60QN03.
Additionally I ran the seagate (samsung has "teamed" up with seagate) hard drive diagnostic with the same result, short DST failure, but long generic and short generic and smart is verified and passed. So I was wondering if anyone had this similar issue, and how were you able to resolve the situation. Again, the only thing I have done recently is only go on the internet to view youtube and TV series/drama, the only possible changes could be windows update. Other than that I really have not tinkered around with the system.
Searching high and low, it looks like I may have to replace the hard drive. However I am hoping to not have to do this since the warranty had just expired a couple months ago. If anyone could please respond or help I would immensely appreciate it! Happy Holidays.
P.S.. Should you require more relevant information, just ask. Thanks again!

    Help,

Literally in last 24 hours.  all was working fine. then Stopped.
Device not working is : hp DVDWBD TS-LB23L ATA Device
Whirrrs like reading disc...even gets the disc icon on windows.
Have scoured these boards and tried everal of the solutions.....
    1.  tried uninstalling and reinstalling Driver as described on these boards... didnt work
    2. tried MATS on microsoft website....didnt work
    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/
    3.  Tried the Revo uninstaller attempt .... didnt work
    4. tried the CC Cleaner attempt ... didnt work
    5. Tried the ATA channel delete ... didnt work
    6. tried the BIOS update  here : HP Mediasmart DVD failure - HP Support Forum
as additional clarification..... no physical damage to computer....Discs being used are all functional Blu or CD or DVD.
HP Mediasmart DVD is still not working.
NO installation of new programs prior to this going on.
My same fire wall program, anti-,malware has been on this computer since I purchased it 7 months ago.
    No software changes in system.
I do not use the Comodo firewall system either.
    Thank you

Have you tried installing a trial Blu-ray player. Don't use one from Cyberlink as it's too close to Media Smart DVD.
     Use Arc Soft
      http://www.arcsoft.com/estore/software_title.asp?ProductCode=TMT5P&gclid=COXEpJ6CqqcCFQEKbAodpQdSCw
----Will give that a whirl when I return home.
Have you tried the obvious and picked a Windows restore point to where it was working ?  -------Windows 7, in that particular machine isn't letting me dial back for an earlier restore point..... it isn't even letting me see dates....Believe me I would have been happy to dial back a week or two.  Not sure why, Havent been able to dig in that direction....was trying to be careful about not digging a deeper hole before moving all important work files and stuff to a different machine before toying with windows deeper.
Maybe the drive itself has failed, do you you have another HP laptop that you can try it in ?-----have several HPs...might try that soon.
Check "Autoplay" in the control panel.----have done the autoplay fixes that have been proposed in other chains of similar problems....no avail.
I will keep throwing ideas at you no matter how simplistic they may seem. I find that it starts people thinking in another direction.     --------Believe me, I appreciate it, just as long as it doesn't devolve into .....Is the machine plugged in?
Have you tried burning a DVD with it ?   Not yet, that is a good idea.
Try installing Image Burn and  see if the drive will create ISO files with a Blu-ray disk. You will get a warning that Image Burn can't do this, but continue and let it dead the whole disc. Let me know if that works and I will give you the software to play the movie from the ISO files.
     http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Use mirror 8 provided by Image Burn.
What version of Media Smart DVD are you running ?  Was using the most recent release......then uninstalled it and went back a few versions... to one that was linked to in another similar thread.
    Thanks.

  • My speakers on my Pavilion dv7 stopped working out of the blue.

I've had my Hp Pavilion dv7 on Windows7 since Christmas of 2010. Now the speakers on it have stopped working and also when i plug in headphones i hear no audio when i should so I know this is not a problem with the speakers itself but the audio software. Again, this happened randomly and i cannot see a reason why it would just stop.

Hello confused 19.  Please read DL Cazes/post/06/17/2011 & Putney/post/06/16/2011.  1st, go to control panel>sound>right click on the speaker icon, enable if disable, check test & see what happens.  2nd, update the latest MS & HP updates.  I think the Rules of Engagement have been Changed.

  • Pavilion dv7 broken hinge

Looked at my DV7 4280us a little closer. It looks like the problem is with the hinge being too tight. Movement of the screen display eventually breaks the screw from it's plastic mounting. Causing plastic pieces to go everywhere. Then when the hinge breaks free it starts bending the cooling fins. Not only would you need new hinges but the complete bottom case. Seems like a very poor design.

The left hinge on my HP Envy broke yesterday. I take very good care of my laptop and there is no way I mishandled it to break the case. Looks like a design issue. Several years ago I had a HP laptop where the upper lid hinge broke. HP repaired the laptop as it was an acknowledged design flaw.
My current laptop is under warranty.

  • Hp Pavilion dv7- Recover Windows 7 without the disk

I reinstalled windows 7 home premium on my machine, using the same serial number as the one that came with the laptop (I found the serial number by downloading some software that scanned my computer and told me what it was).
After installing windows, it told me that it was not genuine. I imagine that it is because it wasn't a version of Windows that has all that HP software pre-loaded on it. My hard drive still has a "recovery" partition, but I have no idea what to do with that, or even if I can do anything with it anymore.
So how can I make my Windows 7 home premium genuine? Do I have to reinstall another version of windows 7 home premium with the HP software included? Where do I find such download? Since I don't have a recovery disk, can I use that "recovery" partition of my hard drive for something?
Thanks in advance for the help.

    Hi crabbattle,
The key for the original version installed on your PC only works with OEM versions of Windows.  You'll need to use the key that came with the retail version of Windows you purchased, or use the recovery software on the PC.
You can access recovery using the F11 key during boot or order discs from HP.  There's more recovery info here.

  • Dv7 Left hinge pulling case apart? What the heck!

I have a dv7 that is very rarely used (I think I purchased it in 2012).  I noticed recently that my hinges are making a lot of noise/struggling.
Tonight I realized that the left hinge is completely busted and pulling the casing apart.  The laptop is clearly out of warranty, so I'm guessing I have no recourse.  I came upon another thread on this forum where HP was fixing the problem on other dv7's, but I'm not sure if those people were still in warranty or not.
    Any help or advice?
    Thanks!

I'm having the exact same problem with mine! Same model, Envy DV7-7227CL. I've seen a lot of the forum posts about Envys in general having this issue. I've only had mine for 14 months, and it's been a stationary laptop to replace my desktop (also an HP). It's really upsetting that all you have to do is open and close the screen regularly for this to happen.
Mine hasn't broken away yet, but once I realized the case was starting to pull apart, I applied some eletricians tape to the area and stopped adjusting or moving the screen. Has HP offered you any solutions on repairs out of warranty? I'm pretty pissed that I'll have to spend money to fix what is obviously a manufacturer's defect, but I need my laptop to be able to open and close.

  • HP pavilion dv7 skewed login screen then turns black

My HP pavilion dv7 laptop turns on, but the login screen is skewed down and to the right. I can see the windows logo while logging in. Once I log in, the screen turns completely black. • Pavilion dv7 fingerprint reader stops working after several hibernate/suspend cycles

After severl hibernate cycles, the fingerprint reader on my Pavilion dv7 latop stops working. The indicator LED no longer flashes (in either colour), and nothing happens when I scan my fingerprint. I'm forced to revert to password login.
This has been an issue since getting the laptop. Fingerprint scanning works fine at first after a reboot, but when I hibernate (or, for that matter, suspend) the laptop after using, I'm never sure whether the scanner is going to work when I restart it. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't, and the only way that I've so far found to fix it is to reboot.
I've tried using installing the latest driver from HP's support site, although it seems to be dated May, 2011, and, interestingly, claims to fix a problem with not restarting after several hibernate cycles (hint: it doesn't). I've tried uninstalling and then re-installing the driver. Doesn't seem to make much difference.
Laptop is an HP Pavilion dv7-6166nr with Windows 7 64-bit Professional installed (although the problem was present with the factory-installed Windows 7 Home Premium).

Try downloading and running the HP Support Assistant if you have not already. It can search for updates for you specific to your notebook. Here is a link to the download: http://goo.gl/gvpTr

  • Pavilion DV7 has power, black screen

I came home from a trip. When I went to start up my Pavilion DV7 it had power, but the screen is black. I tried the hard reset, and I also removed the back panels and sprayed with canned air. Still nothing. Lights near caps lock and num lock keys are blinking. I checked the code and it indicates a problem with the CPU.
Now what the heck do I do?

The following document contains the information of what the blink code means. I take it it is blinking once every 2-3 seconds since you said it correlates to the CPU. The only solution in the document is to contact HP for service.
However, the processor POST code could be triggered by a failed processor or a failed processor socket on the motherboard itself. It can't be identified if it is really the processor or the motherboard without proper testing equipment. You could contact a local PC shop for them to identify the correct component or replace either the processor or the motherboard in hopes it was the right part the first time.
