Pavilion dv7 keyboard replacement problems HP Pavilion dv7-4069wm

Hope I can get some help. HP Pavilion dv7-4069wm, windows7 64bit. Ok, the sad story, I spilled a drink on the keyboard. Did not seem to mess anything up but the keyboard. First mistake, bought a used one off ebay. Turned out to be the wrong one, screw lugs on back did not match. Bought a second one, it seemed to work the first couple times I used it, backspace key would not work, then nothing worked. I did break one of the little tabs on the zif connector and used some tape like I found in another post. Could this be a connection problem, or just a cheap keyboard problem? I am smacking myself for the spill anyway, so ANY help is appreciated.
I forgot to ad, I am using this laptop as a media center, I currently have a wireless keyboard and mouse I use with it, and it works well, one concern being that on this laptop I can only turn on the wifi with the wifi key on the laptop keyboard. Is there a way to go into bios or a workaround to turn on wifi other than the laptop keyboard? I have the laptop power settings to put it to sleep when not in use, but If it would get shut off, not sure how I would get the wifi restarted if it did not automatically come back on.

use windows mobility centre to control Wifi. May require wifi to be turned on via dedicated key for first instance before it can handle toggling of wifi but may not so worth inspecting & setting up.
Problem with broken connector is probably cause of keyboard issue, the tabs don't just hold cable but also push it against contacts so you may need to revisit & improve your solution to this ribbon connector.
Have come across damaged connectors before & been able to use them by adding thin tape to top of ribbon making ribbon tighter fit in socket & contact better & also use some tape across top of connector socket & onto ribbon to hold it in place.

  • How to know which hard drive contains the OS in Hp Pavilion dv7-4069wm? Upgrading.

    I'm thinking about upgrading one of my hard drives (320GB ea) in my HP Pavilion dv7-4069wm laptop for more storage.  I would like to keep the drive that contains the OS to avoid the hassle of making a copy, but I'm not sure which one that is. I haven't replaced a hard drive before, let alone a dual drive. I recently added more RAM and noticed both hard drives looked the same. Can anyone tell me how to know the difference? .

  • New keyboard on DV7-4069WM

    Hello,
    I have a Pavilion DV7-4069WM laptop.  I replaced the keyboard as I broke it when I took it out to clean it.  I installed the new one to the best of my knowledge, having done similar replacements on other laptops.  However, it does not work, in either OS that I use (Win7 or Ubuntu 10.04) or in BIOS.
    The locking mechanism (a plastic bar that snaps down) is broken and does not lock in like it would if the pin hinges were still intact.  I am sure that the ribbon cable is in place though, and am still having no luck.
    Do you have any thoughts or is there a support center that I can call and/or send my laptop to to have this fixed?  I am forced to use a USB keyboard attached to the keyboard which rather limits the portability of it being a laptop.
    Thanks,
    -Steve

    If the locking bar is broken and not able to hold the ribbon cable in place, then there is no way to repair this.
     You can sometimes find a defective motherboard for your model that has the locking bar intact, these can be found on e-bay.
     The only other way to repair it is to replace the motherboard and if you were to send it in to HP, that is what they would do.

  • DV7-4069wm ACPI table reset/recovery

    I have been unable to reset my acpi tables to factory defaults (firmware, not software).
    They were modified remotely via rootkit on win7 and BIOS was flashed backwards to F23 from F28.
    I cannot determine if I am running on flashed bios or a shadow variant as BIOS admin is locked out from all advanced features.
    I am no longer able to do a recovery BIOS flash with win+b keys either from a EFI util created USB key or HP_TOOLS drive partition, nor a prepared efi HP_TOOLS CD. "remove any disks and press any key to reboot" message, which does not reboot - requires power reset. No BIOS recovery screen at all, simply disk/usb seeks, then message. Using the four arrow key combination, did result in a seemingly successful forceflash update of BIOS stamp, however did not display any BIOS recovery screen, nor fan speedup as expected during a classic flash.
    In old win64 premium install, user admin context was overridden, and due to acpi injection any reinstall on windows is also compromised. In windows with SVM disabled in BIOS, all ata/usb runs via usb subsystem drivers, in Linux it always does. With SVM enabled in BIOS, windows reports ATA drivers, however ATA disk to disk traffic in either OS maxes out at 20Mb/s - usb2 speeds.
    In Ubuntu 12.04 I see cyclic processes running with no userid, no pid which may correlate with bootlog messages of cwd, cmd as the kernel comes up.  I also see iterative ip scans from link-local to active wlan0 in the upper UDP ranges. IE. my hardware is scanning my (whichever) OS. When booting with a Hiren's boot CD in minixp -  process explorer reports 12,000 lsass.exe listings (via buffer overflow access) by the time I can get it open. This happens with NO HDDs at all and continues until the system BSODs. This is not a hardware problem...
    I have pulled the cmos battery and generated a cmos checksum error and subsequent reboot, but cannot rid my machine of this malware. While I suspect it is in fact a variant of this:
    Deactivating BIOS rootkit
    I cannot confirm this and until it is removed the machine remains unsecured despite locked down ubuntu denying access. Hardware doesn't need to ask permission after all, and even ubuntu doesn't report hardware processes not under it's control.
    So, my questions are:
    1) How can I access the advanced BIOS menu on my dv7-4069wm (f10 then 'A') is fail.
    2) Are ACPI tables updated via BIOS flash?
    3) Are ACPI tables erased with CMOS battery removal?
    4) How can I ensure my BIOS is not shadowed while reflashed with no BIOS menu to disable it?
    5) How can I disable (or reset to dormant) the absolute firmware embedded in my bios for theft recovery because it seems like someone has stolen my hardware from my control. While this was purchased legally, troubleshooting this problem may have produced a similar race condition to activate computrace, or it may be the vehicle for my problems.
    I have tested memory thoroughly, tried four (two new) HDDs, zero'd MBR w/live ubu cd between installs.
    I welcome any input on this (links please) but leave this as a warning in the event  I do not see any.
    There is BIOS malware out there, and even the stuff with best of intent (link above) holds little encrypted/authenticated security that it may be easily circumvented and taken over. I'm not looking to convince anyone, rather seeking help from those who understand the problem (or any portion herein). It seems many remain in denial that this can happen to them, and honestly it may have and you would never know until remote folks got sloppy (In my case rootkit w/popups - they got greedy)
    TIA
    -Hyar

    Further History:
    At one point I was (it seemed) able to flash using the win+b keys, and even successfully flahsed the version stamp using the arrow key "forceflash". The platform.ini it appears has no bearing on this type of flash however as it's not necessarily there and as such the "rom protected areas" reported by BIOS (and currently under remote owner control) do NOT get updated.
    There is provision for updating portions of ROM including those reported protected using the platform.ini file called by the insyde win-flash tool, however it seems those now in charge have made provision to handle this.
    In my user rights curcumvented windows, I am able to run the BIOS update extraction tool (runas admin), and subsequent insyde flash utility all at once (decompress, and run via selfex package). No success as defaults are either being burnt to inneffective ghost ROM, or the default platform.ini file does not flash protected areas including acpi. If however, I edit platform.ini changing ANYTHING (even one flag) - the OS reports incompatibility of flash tool.
    I prepared an SD card (only way to write lock the HP_TOOLS folder) and a win+b recovery flash boot will seem to switch to flash mode (no screen bios load) but will not recognize the flashfile, or fails to flash it.
    With an ubuntu live cd, any creation of a fat32 usb drive was thwarted when the filesystem was named "HP_TOOLS" as it was rewritten to "HP_TOOLS nA" on save. Nice catch, hacker.
    Futher, There are mutliple ACPI entries for "BIOS read, BIOS write which I cannot seem to confirm should exist in ACPI at all.
    Currently running laptop with no battery and cmos battery out.
    This is a nasty tick and well burrowed.
    I don't know who is reading this, but I hope it helps someone.
    If you have a clue/hint/lead to offer I do welcome another perspective.

  • Trackpad click bar not working correctly after getting a keyboard replacement.

    I just got my whole keyboard replaced two days ago due to a sticking "m" problem on my 2008 macbook pro.  They didn't replace my trackpad, but now, it seems that my trackpad clicker will only respond if I apply a lot of pressure to the middle of the upper edge of the bar.  If I click anywhere else on the bar, the bar is completely unresponsive.  It makes clicking and dragging nearly impossible. I once had this problem when I had a bulging battery, but the battery is fine now.  Could something have happened when they replaced the keyboard? It can't be coincidence...  Is there a home remedy?  I know they will want to replace it if I take it in, and my old maching has been off warranty for a while now.

    Either a misalignment or a cable is not properly connected.
    Since they just "fixed" the keyboard I'd say take it back as they most likely caused this problem.
    If you want to do it yourself, iFixit could be particularly useful:

  • Potential keyboard hardware problem T410

    Dear all,
    since yesterday I have been experiencing a problem with my T410, which is potentially due to
    a hardware issue with the keyboard.
    A few specific keys are not working anymore. These seem to be the Power On key, the Fn key,
    the Alt Gr key, and the ThinkVantage key.
    I am assuming it is a keyboard hardware problem, since I cannot use the Power On button to
    start the laptop. Fortunately, this is possible using the fingerprint reader start-up.
    When the laptop is running (using Windows 7) everything is working fine, except the mentioned
    buttons. I cannot access any Fn button functions (e.g. the reading lamp) or Alt Gr symbols (e.g.
    the @ symbol which is on my keyboard on the 2 button) or power down with the Power button.
    I tried various easy fixes:
    * Making sure all drivers are up to date
    * Remove and reattach the keyboard
    * Static discharge procedure (unplug all power, 10 presses and 30 sec holding of power button)
    * Checking Bios settings
    * Replace battery
    Unfortunately, these did not change the situation.
    I am wondering if the simultaneous malfunctioning of these specific buttons points to a certain
    hardware problem. I hope a replacement of the keyboard might solve this, but it could be an
    issue with the motherboard.
    Any hints would be welcome.
    Thank you,
    MH
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Dear all,
    thank you for your suggestions. Unfortunately, it was not the keyboard. It appears to
    be a more serious problem. In fact, since yesterday the laptop does not boot correctly
    anymore. The boot process is started, but I only end up with a black screen, and some
    randomly colored first few lines at the top of the display.
    It all points to a major malfunction. Unfortunately, the warranty expired 3 months ago...

  • Do new MBPs still have the keyboard "delay" problem?

    Since the MBP software update does not seem to have resolved the issue of the keyboard "skipping" or "delaying" letters as I write, I wonder if this problem has somehow been fixed in the newest MBPs. And if so, whether it's been determined that it is a logic board issue, in which case I may bring my MBP back for replacement.
    Thank you for your help!

    good question... searching these threads and on google will tell you all sorts of stories...
    a lot of people are convinced it is a hardware problem, which it could be, but I do not experience delays or intermittent issues and/or missing first letters all the time, particularly not in Windows Vista (which is unfortunately not a good sample enough to quantify, I rarely use Vista on my Mac).
    I have noticed no issues via my wireless bluetooth keyboard, mind you (perhaps a hint at the improper hardware under the laptop keyboard?).
    As some users have reported, having the keyboard replaced might changed the results, but it is a wild guess, since some still have the problem...
    Basically, this issue is far from resolved, is absolutely irritating, and has been known for a while. Another problem is that visiting an Apple Store may induce the humiliating experience of not being able to replicate the issue... I have brought mine in and some super nice Genius dude wrote about two paragraphs in TextEdit non-stop without even one single mishap... How embarrassing.
    He did believe me though, whilst he also claimed he had never heard about the issue. He offered to replace the keyboard in the laptop and the USB controller managing inputs and feedback from it, thinking like me that it could be anything between USB, keyboard, or the connections between them that might be faulty (an hypothesis raised many times over these discussion boards).
    I'm still unconvinced, and have not made a move. Mind you, I have a 3-years Apple Care coverage, and I could wait until three years from now if I wanted to, the way it works... This Mac I have is almost 3 months old, and I'm very sad I installed Leopard too, by the way. It is waaaaay slower than Tiger...
    Anyhow, I still wait on the software hypothesis, and hope for a patch... (one that works, that is, some other keyboard issues are "supposed" to have been fixed).
    Patience is a virtue, and I can't really lose my computer for any number of days, I need it every day for work and studies, and no, using another computer in the meantime is impossible (I have some hardware-locked data and programs that are more expensive than all the Macs I have owned together... And they are, hmm, involved in a sensitive sector of information...)
    Cordially,
    Dr Sly

  • Would a Top Case keyboard replacement for Macbook Unibody A1342 (US version), be compatible w/my Macbook if originally it had a Japanese version?

    I bought a Macbook Unibody back in 2010, and until now the system is still working perfectly fine, probably because I keep on updating my software version, currently I am on Mac OS X 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion)...I don't have issues with it.
    I bought this Macbook in Japan, the keyboard version is on Japanese (with US alphabets) becaue I was studying Kanji back then, and apparently I am now living here in the Philippines and some of my keyboard keys are lost and they were taken off by my naughty niece (LOL, couldn't blame her though... she's just 2 years old)... now I am looking for a replacement. I couldn't find Japanese version of Top Case replacements here in Manila... now I kinda realized I might as well use a US version moving forward.
    Now my question is re: Top Case keyboard replacement for Macbook Unibody A1342 (US version), would it be compatible w/my Macbook if originally it had a Japanese version?
    Thanks in advance for all the help & informations. I would really appreciate it before I buy a replacement.
    Have a good one guys! ^_^)Y

    but it has been dropped a bit.
    Translation - It has been dropped multiple times.
    All the problems are likely related. Better get it to an Apple service rep and be aware that any warranty does not cover abuse of the product.

  • A possible solution for "foreight language keyboard shortcut" problem...

    Hi(Bonjour)!
    Everyone know the problem of losy keyboard layout when Final Cut is used with foreight language keyboard. We loose the COMMAND-Q shorcut.
    As PieroF suggested in many posts in final cut express forum, there is a workaround:
    "+I just installed Leopard and I ran into this keyboard shortcut problem.+
    +I can confirm that:+
    +a. the problem exists also with the Italian keyboard (in addition to other languages, as pointed by other posters)+
    +b. the workaround I described in my previous answer works fine :+
    +- close FCE (if open)+
    +- open System Preferences/International/Language+
    +- drag English to the first place on top of the other languages+
    +- drag your own language (Italian in my case) again on top of English (at the end the window will show the same original settings, but something happened in the heart of Leopard...)+
    +- close System Preferences+
    +- open FCE: now all shortcuts work as expected, and are correctly listed with their corresponding menu commands+
    +It's a workaround, it's not convenient (I'd better have this bug fixed), but apparently you have to apply it only once for each system startup.+
    Piero "
    As stated by Piero, you have to follow this procedure after each computer startup.
    I found a way to restore the COMMAND-Q shortcut with the keyboard and mouse system pref panel.
    Simply add Final Cut application and add a +custom shotcut+. Be careful to type exactly the "Quit Final Cut Express" menu.
    This solution allows to restart the computer.
    It's work with Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro under Leopard 10.5.4.
    Michel Boissonneault

    Hi Michel,
    I like your suggestion because the keyboard shortcuts defined in the system preferences do not require redefinition at each startup. So in theory we could define all missing/wrong shortcuts this way, and not only the cmd-Q as you suggested. Boring, but we could do it once for all.
    The only problem is that I don't know how to define shortcuts for submenus, for example "Render Selection/Both": it seems system preferences allows only to define shortcuts for the menu ("Render Selection" - in this case absolutely useless) but not for the submenu.
    Do you know a way ? (I looked in the help, which didn't... help).
    Piero

  • Weird dreamweaver keyboard mapping problem

    weird dreamweaver keyboard mapping problem:
    Hope this solution helps someone out. If you have q's, ask
    and I will try to help.
    I was having a weird problem in dreamweaver... Whenever I was
    in code view and typed "shift+i" to make a capital "I", instead it
    would paste from the clipboard.
    I finally figured out what was happening. I compared the
    menu.xml in my app support folder in the user library to the
    original menu.xml file that was in the application folder. I went
    through until I came across the diff:
    menu.xml in my library/app support folder:
    <!-- Windows Navigation Shortcuts -->
    <shortcut key="Cmd+Ins" name="Copy2" platform=""
    command="if (dw.canClipCopy()) { dw.clipCopy() }"
    domRequired="FALSE" id="DWShortcuts_HTMLSource_Copy2" />
    <shortcut key="Shift+Ins" name="Paste2" platform=""
    command="if (dw.canClipPaste()) { dw.clipPaste() }"
    domRequired="FALSE" id="DWShortcuts_HTMLSource_Paste2" />
    <shortcut key="Shift+Del" name="Cut2" platform=""
    command="if (dw.canClipCut()) { dw.clipCut() }" domRequired="FALSE"
    id="DWShortcuts_HTMLSource_Cut2" />
    orig menu.xml file:
    <!-- Windows Navigation Shortcuts -->
    <shortcut key="Cmd+Ins" name="Copy2" platform=""
    command="if (dw.canClipCopy()) { dw.clipCopy() }"
    domRequired="FALSE" id="DWShortcuts_HTMLSource_Copy2" />
    <shortcut key="Shift+Ins" name="Paste2" platform=""
    command="if (dw.canClipPaste()) { dw.clipPaste() }"
    domRequired="FALSE" id="DWShortcuts_HTMLSource_Paste2" />
    <shortcut key="Shift+Del" name="Cut2" platform=""
    command="if (dw.canClipCut()) { dw.clipCut() }" domRequired="FALSE"
    id="DWShortcuts_HTMLSource_Cut2" />
    There was a diff in the "platform=" tags. The orig stated
    [platform="win"], my config stated [platform=""] (nothing in
    between the ""'s). So, I reset the platform tag to be
    [platform="win"] in my settings and then relaunched dreamweaver. It
    fixed the problem.
    Not sure how this occurred, but it works now.

  • Calling1.4.1 signed applet from Javascript causes keyboard/focus problems

    Pretty sure there's a JRE bug here, but I'm posting to forums before I open one in case I'm missing something obvious :-)
    This issue may be specific to IE, I haven't tested elsewhere yet. Our web application is centered around a signed applet that is initialized with XML data via Javascript. We first noticed the problem when our users started upgrading from the 1.3.x plug-in to the 1.4.x plug-in. The major symptom was that shortcut keys stopped working. I debugged the problem off and on for about a month before I boiled it down to a very simple program that demonstrates the issue (included below). Basically, the program has a function that adds a JButton to a JPanel and registers a keyboard listener (using the new DefaultKeyboardFocusManager class) that prints a message to the console. This function is called by the applet's init() method, as well as by a public method that can be called from Javascript (called callMeFromJavascript()). I also included a very simple HTML file that provides a button that calls the callMeFromJavascript() method. You can test this out yourself: To recreate, compile the class below, JAR it up, sign the JAR, and put in the same dir with the HTML file. Load the HTML file in IE 5.0 or greater, and bring the console up in a window right next to it. Now click the button that says init--you should see the small box appear inside the button that indicates it has the focus. Now press some keys on your keyboard. You should see "KEY PRESSED!!!" appearing in the console. This is proper behavior. Now click the Init Applet from Javascript button. It has removed the button called init, and added one called "javascript". Press this button. Notice there is no focus occurring. Now press your keyboard. No keyboard events are registered.
    Where is gets interesting is that if you go back and make this an unsigned applet, and try it again, everything works fine. This bug only occurs if the applet is signed.
    Furthermore, if you try it in 1.3, signed or unsigned, it also works. So this is almost certainly a 1.4 bug.
    Anyone disagree? Better yet, anyone have a workaround? I've tried everything I could think of, including launching a thread from the init() method that sets up the components, and then just waits for the data to be set by Javascript. But it seems that ANY communication between the method called by Javascript and the code originating in init() corrupts something and we don't get keyboard events. This bug is killing my users who are very reliant on their shortcut keys for productivity, and we have a somewhat unique user interface that relies on Javascript for initialization. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

    I tried adding the requestFocus() line you suggested... Same behavior.
    A good thought, but as I mention in my description, the applet has no trouble gaining the focus initially (when init() is called). From what I have seen, it is only when the call stack has been touched by Javascript that I see problems. This is strange though: Your post gave me the idea of popping the whole panel into a JFrame... I tried it, and the keyboard/focus problem went away! It seems to happen only when the component hierarchy is descended from the JApplet's content pane. So that adds yet another variable: JRE 1.4 + Signed + Javascript + components descended from JApplet content pane.
    And yes, signed or unsigned DOES seem to make a difference. Don't ask me to explain why, but I have run this little applet through quite a few single variable tests (change one variable and see what happens). The same JAR that can't receive keyboard events when signed, works just fine unsigned. Trust me, I'm just as baffled as you are.

  • (foreign) keyboard mapping problems

    Many people, myself included, have voiced problems with keyboard mappings since updating to Leopard. It appears to particularly afflict people with non-US keyboards, but I may be wrong.
    Does anybody out there have a generic fix? Manually modifying the keyboard map as the Latvians did seems to address (some of) the symptoms, not the underlying problem. Accordingly, it doesn't appear to be a general fix, as reported here:
    http://m10lmac.blogspot.com/2007/10/fixing-leopards-latvian-keyboard.html
    Here are some of the other posts I saw/wrote that make me think this is a SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM IN LEOPARD:

    Does anybody out there have a generic fix?
    There is no generic fix because the problems are unrelated, except to the extent they represent goofs in creating certain files and failure to find these before release.
    The Latvian keyboard issue is caused by errors in a particular .keylayout file. I don't know of any other similar layout with the same problem (In Tiger it was Macedonian and Romanian which had such errors). The Hanin Chinese IM problem is caused by errors in a couple of files particular to it -- all the other Chinese input systems have correct mappings. The X11 keyboard mapping problem concerns a different part of OS X than the others. The issues of QWERTY/AZERTY/QWERTZ in Chinese input were present in a different fashion in Tiger and earlier and many people have switched to a different IM called QIM to solve it. Having a dead Apple key is not related to ordinary character mapping issues.
    Your own issue with ViaVoice is not totally clear to me, will try to respond in that thread.

  • Hot Code Replace Problem...

    Hi Everyone,
    I am using WebLogic 10 with Eclipse. Whenever i start the server in debug mode and make two three changes in the code... WHAM.... I get the Hot Code Replace error. Is there any way so that the server can keep up with the code changes. Publishing the app again takes approx 40 mins!

    Almost always this is a limitation of the JRE/JDK you are using and really
    nothing to do with Eclipse.
    Try a different VM and see if you have better luck
