Pavilion dv7 only charging when turned off

Hello,
I've got a problem with my HP Pavilion dv7-4050ea (windows 7 64bit). The laptop only charges when the computer is off or in sleep mode. I've already checked the following:
- I tried to charge my laptop from different power outlets.
- I removed my battery and reinserted it.
- I checked the battery's status with HP Assistant and it's ok.
- I reinstalled Microsoft's ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery.
- I updated my BIOS.
- I even bought a new AC adapter
But none of these solutions have worked. Please note: I do not get a "plugged in, not charging" message, as I've read about on this forum.
This is what happens:
1) I plug in the AC adapter and switch on the laptop.
2) The laptop then runs on the AC adapter (or charges the battery) until about 1 minute or so.
3) Then it suddenly enters battery usage mode until it's depleted.
4) And the only way to recharge it, is to turn off the laptop or put it in sleep mode.
If I switch on the laptop, after having removed the battery (so only using the AC adapter), it will just abruptly switch off after about 1 minute or so.
Many thanks for your help, as I really need my laptop to work and this is driving me mad.
Best regards,
Patrick H.

Hello,
This is not an isolated case as I've found several similar cases on this forum while looking for an answer. I would just like to know if I should send my laptop for repairs, or if I can fix it myself.
Thanks

my iPad 1 won't hold a charge for very long and will only fully charge when turned off while plugged in. Will a full reset fix this?

    maybe but
    most likely no
if you have many apps running and using data and localization at the same time yes maybe
but batteries get worse and worse and worse over time until they die a software reset will not change that

  • Does it charge when turned off?

Does the iPhone charge when turned 'Off'? Other phones/devices(like the iPod) that I own show a charging symbol when switched off; the iPhone screen is completely blank.

    Yes.It's charging while it's turned off...If it's plugged in,that is.

  • Ipad 3 charging and sync issues (only charge while turned off)

    Hello,
I recently came into possession of an iPad 3rd generation, 32GB with Verizon network. Upon gaining possession I was informed of two issues with the device. One was a busted screen and the other was that it would not sync to iTunes. The person stated that he had taken it to a store and they informed him it was the dock connector and he had it replaced. Once they replaced it the issue was still apparent and he asked for them to remove it and put original back. At this time the screen was busted. I purchased the iPad and ordered new screen and dock connector. The parts arrived today and while the screen is fixed I am still having issues with the docking of the iPad. First off I have restored the device several times, tried different cables and different plugins to include both my USB ports on my Mac and wall plugs. None of which are charging or syncing the iPad. I have completely disassembled the device down to the battery and still no change. What is interesting is the fact that I turn the device off and plug in the charging cord the device turns on. If I leave it plugged in while I shut it down it will charge. Only charging when the device is turned off. With this I assume the port is working. I have tried DFU and recovery to try force syncing to iTunes with no such luck. Any advice as to where to start or what to do?

  • HT4060 My iPad Mini and My iPhone 4s stopped charging when plugged into and outlet. On the same day and i've tried numerous adapters . It will charge when turned off only or plugged into a computer

My iPad Mini and my iPhone 4s stopped charging on the same day when plugged into an outlet if they are turned on. My phone charged as long as it was turned off and it will charge when pluged into an USB port,
    Anyone else have this problem?

  • My iphone only charges when its off, and dies constantly regardless of %

my 4s started acting funny when i plugged it in, it would sometimes recognize that it was connected and sometimes wouldn't, then all of a sudden it only recognized the charger when it was off. i have since tried other chargers and even resetting it. but now it dies at any percentage and when i plug it in, the "connect to power source" icon pops up, if i wait and try to turn it on again it will turn on, sometimes this happens every ten minutes. it seems like the phone gets frustrated and gives up on me, this is really annoying. it also means i cannot use it in emergencies because it will just die, i also cannot use the alarm because it might die, i cant use the gps because it will die, for example, i will use the gps to get somewhere, then when i need to get back, i get lost because i need to wait at least 3 hours while it is off and charging so that i can use the gps to get back. PLEASE HELP ITS DRIVING ME INSANE

Seems like 2 problems. Charging port assembly is faulty. And most likely battery is faulty also. Apple would handle this with replacement iPhone 4S with Warranty or AppleCare, or without coverage for $199. Make Genius reservation to avoid long wait time at Apple Store.

  • IPhone4 iOS 4.0.1 won't charge when turned off

I had a 3GS that when placed in the dock (connected to my iMac which is always on) and was turned off (the iPhone that is) would charge normally and was completed in the normal amount of time (a few hours for a complete charge). When I upgraded to iOS 4.0.1, the iPhone would only charge in the dock if it was left on.
I upgraded to the iPhone4 (4.0.1) and the same thing is occurring: the iPhone won't charge when it is turned off; only when it is left on will it completely charge.
Because it happened with my 3GS after upgrading to iOS 4.0.1, I am assuming that it is a software issue with the new operating system.
I have tried a restore as recommended by tech support, but that did not resolve the issue. Has anyone else had the same problem? Any idea how to fix it so that the iPhone4 can charge when placed in the dock and is turned off? Thanks.

    1) stop being impatient.
We are all users like yourself... reposting one minute later is not going to get a lot of sympathy from us.
    2) Clean the dock connector with a soft, dry brush
    3) Try a different sync cable or charging device.

  • Does my ipod touch charge when turned off!

Hi guys i got my 16g ipod touch in the uk after work tonight. A quick question, when connected to the computer does it continue to charge when i turn the power off on the touch? As nothing indicates on the screen that it is charging and it also disappears from itunes. cheers

Yeah I was wondering the same thing since my ipod for some reasons seems to charge really slowly. I'm about to burn my one support call and might end up sending it back as a defect. I've charged it while using my computer (so obviously it wasn't asleep), and it would creep up very slowly. Then I let it charge overnight on my laptop (8 hours) and it would go like 25% from about 25% battery. I tried recharging it from my iHome ipod dock and it would charge a bit faster, then sort of cap off at about 66-75% battery. I've tried turning sticking it i the iHome and turning it off and seemed to have no effect on the battery. I'm going to try it again tonight having it turned off while attached to my laptop. It will be my last attempt before calling Apple. I am really frustrated.

  • HP 625 Laptop - Only charges when turned ON...?

    Hello
recently received an HP 625 laptop,
It has a charging fault or needs settings changed.  Looking for opinions:
If using the laptop with battery only - works fine.
If battery gets low, to enable charging on the laptop the laptop must be switched on.
Used to laptops being able to charge when powered down.
Is this a feature, can it be changed?  BIOS/Windows settings?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    any suggestions?

  • Cannot charge when turning off my phone

I turn off my phone and charge my 6plus. No battery signal shows. I do know if I charge my phone in that way. Do any of you have the same problem? Is that normal? Need help. Thanks.

Assuming you release the top button before swiping that is not normal behavior. Assuming also that the phone is not jailbroken, I suggest restoring it with iTunes. First restore it as New and see if that fixes the problem. If it does then connect to iTunes again, click on the iPhone button to bring up the Summary screen, and click Restore from Backup. Test again. If it is still OK you have solved the problem. If the problem comes back you have a corrupt backup; you will have to restore again and set up as a new phone, without restoring your backup.

  • IPhone 5 will not be recognized by iTunes or charge while on but when turned off the iPhone will charge just fine but still won't sync with iTunes what should I do?

Was charging my iphone 5 for about an hour or so after charging unplugged and went to playing games phone was at 5% so I grabbed my cable and plugged it into the wall nothing happened tried three different chords and blocks and sockets afterwards I plugged my phone into the computer and it wouldn't charge or sync with iTunes it acted as if it wasn't even plugged in so I shut the phone off and though I'd give It a break and try again later. As I got ready to go to bed I though I'd try to plug it back in and see if anything happened nothing did so I just left it I went to mess with it this morning and come to find out it was at 100% I continued to mess with it and i came to the conclusion that it only charges when turned off. I can't get the phone to reset and would love to restore with iTunes if it would sync with iTunes I don't know what I need to do but really need my problem resolved since its a hassle to have to turn off my iphone in order to get it to charge

Is that a new iPhone? Bring it in to Apple for a replacement.
    But do this first:
hold the Home Button and the Power Button at the same time, keep holding, ignore everything on the screen, keep holding until you see the white Apple logo appear, then let go and let it start up.
It should charge both when on and off, unless you connect throug a hub and there are current eaters also on the hub: connect directly to the usb port.

  • Charging iPhone 3Gs when turned off.

I have had my iPhone 2 days and I have realised that it does not charge when turned off. If I turn the phone off and insert the wire (wall plug or USB on computer) the phone automatically turns on and when I turn it off it doesn't charge. Has anyone got any suggestions as to why this happens or any ways to fix it. I'm new to Apple products so I would much appreciate anyones help!
    Thank you!

If you plug it in while on, then turn it off, it should charge just fine (although you will have no indication it is charging, since it is off).
If you turn it off and THEN plug it in, it will start up. That's just the way it is.

    Hi there 8472kck!
I have some information for you that can help you troubleshoot this issue a little further. That information can be found right here:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 15 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
and that information comes from this article:
