Pavilion dv7 start up

Hi, I have an hp Paviion entertainment pc dv7 out of warranty. At start up a windows error recovery screen pops up giving me 2 options. I can start normally or launch start up repair. I have tried both with no success. I purchased new disks from hp and when i install them nothing changes. There are no optins to run disk nor does the computer attempt it on its own. I have pressed esc. at start up to enter the startup menu and have tried every possible solution and diagnostic. any suggestions?

I would put a new hard drive in it. They are quite easy to change and relatively inexpensive. Just be sure to get one of at least as large a capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. For instance if you have a 500gb hdd you could use a 750gb but not a 320gb.
If you need help in selecting a hdd, or the instructions for changing it post back with your 'full' Model number and/or Product number as listed on the Service Tag attached to bottom of laptop.

  • HP Pavilion DV7-1428ca _ CAPS + NUM LOCK Continually Blinks + Will not Start up Black Screen

    Would appreciate any suggestions on the issue I am encountering.
    I have an HP Pavilion DV7-1428ca that was left powered on, so it went into Safe mode (screen goes blank). Once I came back to my Laptop hitting any key would take out of of the Safe mode however this time it did not. It remained with black screen irregardless of buttons pressed.
    Had booted and can hear the fan and hdd go for the 2secs then it stops to a Black Screen with the "CAPS + NUM LOCK" Continually Blinking. Tried to Hard Boot several times but the same thing re-occurs.
    It does not seem to be blinking in a series a code, just a steady blink (every sec) for both the CAPS + NUM Lock for as long as I leave it on. HP Site provides a chart from 1-6 series of blink codes which does not seem to apply to me.
    Being out of Warranty I am hesitant in bringing it to a local repair shop without trying any alternate trouble shooting first.

    First of all, shutdown the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter unplugged, remove the battery, and then hold down the Power button for a full minute.  Plug in the AC Adapter ( leave the battery out ) and see if the notebook will start.

    Turn on power, press F10 to enter BIOS mode, Go to Diagnostics and run Hard Drive Test if any test fails you need to replace the part.
    The failure ID will either be a Smart or Disk Self Test failure - both would indicate that your Hard Drive is failing and will need to be replaced.
    If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced.

    hp pavilion dv7-1247cl starts with alot of colorful lines horizontal and vertical can hear windows come up but can't see it because of all the lines any idea on how to fix this issue?

  • HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook starting with Blank White Screen--He​lp??

    I've had an HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook for a couple years now. Today I go to start it up (without the power cord plugged in), and a completely white screen appears. I'm thinking, maybe it's still starting up/working some kinks out. Then I hear the Windows 7 twinkling start up sound that usually happens when you get to your log in screen. So it seems the computer itself is working, but there is zero display on the screen. If anyone has any good advice/experience with this/knows how I can fix it or what I should do, PLEASE let me know! Computer problems are so distressing

    I had this problem with my father's pavillion.
    There was a broken pin in the screen socket on the motherboard so I guess it was always making poor contact until one day this pin must have broken off completely and the screen would only display completely white.
    I inserted a fine solid wire (not multi-strand) into the plug at the right point so that it only just stuck out enough to make contact with what was left of the pin in the socket, whilst being fully inserted into the plug.
    I then taped the plug/socket together to make sure it didn't loose contact by coming loose.
    Seems to have solve the problem in the short term (but the socket should need replacing for a long-term fix).

  • HP Pavilion dv7-4087cl won't start-up

    Hi, I have an HP Pavilion dv7-4087cl with Windows 7 Home Prem OA. There have been no installations or upgrades made. Everytime I turn on my computer it becomes a black screen then it says "Boot Device Not Found Please install an operating disk. Hard Disk (3FO)" I don't know what any of this means. It also allows me to view system diagnostics so I can run a start-up and run-in test. My memory is 100% fine but the start-up is a failure. Please help.

    Sounds like the hard drive has died, not uncommon in laptops. You can replace it with a retail laptop hard drive, but will need Recovery Disks to install Windows-hope you burned your set? If not you can >> order from HP for a small fee.
    If you need help selecting a new hard drive post back. Just be sure to purchase one of at least as large a capacity as you have now (640GB) in order to use Recovery Disks. Can be>> larger capacity, but not smaller. Your>> Service Manual has instructions for replacing hard drive.

  • Recovery Discs from HP won't start in my HP Pavilion Dv7

    I have an HP Pavilion dv7 that I need to wipe clean due to spyware. I bought the System Recovery DVD's from HP and on them it states "to begin, insert the disc into the optical drive of your computer and follow the on-screen instructions." Unfortunately I insert the disc and I get the info from the disc to come up but no instructions. I have even tried to make the laptop run from the disc drive at start up. when I did that it wanted me to create system recovery discs. I do not need to make them, I have them from HP. Just frustrated on why the disc from HP are not doing as instructed.

    You're very welcome, KC.
    If you can't boot from the DVD, it could indeed be a bad disk.
    Also, make sure you have disk 1 in first to boot from.
    And yes, you should get a very brief message to hit any key to boot from CD, so watch carefully for it.
    If you miss it you have to start all over again and reboot the PC.

  • My pavilion dv7 doesn't start up

    My pavilion dv7 Notebook PC doesn't start up. I removed battery and power and I reset hard. I started it up. Thats happened many times. Each time i shut it off I need to reset hard to start it up again. What is the problem and what is the solution for it?

    I understand you're having issues starting up your dv7 notebook and have to do a hard reset to boot each time.
    If you're only looking for service you can contact the HP Phone Support line. You can schedule a repair over the phone. You can contact HP Technical Support at 1-800-474-6836 in North America. For all other regions click here.
    Can you tell me if you have the same issue when only using the AC adapter and no battery? 
    I would also suggest a startup repair. You can do this in the HP Recovery Manager by tapping F11 while the notebook boots up.
    You can also try a system restore to before the issue started while in the Recovery manager if the repair does not work.
    When the notebook doesn't boot are there any LED lights or sounds (Fan, HDD, etc...)? If not, it's power related and could be the battery motherboard or adapter depending on the source you're using. If there are sounds and appears to boot it might be the GPU or display. Try an external monitor in this case to rule out the display.

  • HP Pavilion dv7 doesn't start and I can't install operating system

    I had Windows 8.1 Pro and I did a virus scan with Malwarebytes-program but I think that it completed before this and didn't find anything. I were also using Youtube and suddenly my computer turned off and it didn't find my hard disk anymore.
    I got errors like:
    03F0
    hard disk not exist
    boot device not found 3F0
    no bootable device--insert boot disk and press any key
    Diagnostic log shows that I have had that 03F0 and also 0601 error before, but somehow I made my computer to work again. In BIOS it didn't show that there is hard disk, can't test it, but it was an option in boot order, maybe it is always there I don't know.
    I tried a trick that going to BIOS five times and always save changes and exit. That kind of worked and I were able to use Windows like 15 min but then computer turned off.
    Windows repairing things:
    Windows Automatic repair -> The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again.
    Startup repair -> Startup repair couldn't repair your PC.
    I used live Linux Mint from my USB stick and it worked good. I formatted my USB stick and tried to reinstall Windows but if I remember correctly it didn't recognize my hard drive.
    I thought that maybe my hard disk is broken and I took my Fujitsu Siemens Storagebird Serial ATA WD 250GB external hard drive out of its case and put it inside my laptop. It fitted there well so I tried to install windows into that. First it didn't recognize that hard drive either but when I tried many times and changed it inside laptop between slot 1 and 2
    it finally showed in Windows installation screen. Installing always stopped at 16 or 19% and formatting didn't help.
    I also formatted my USB stick and made it installation media again but same thing.
    Then I thought that maybe I have wrong Windows 8 Pro product key, an upgrade only so I tried to install Windows Vista because it were a factory installed OS. It either didn't recognize my hard drive in Windows installing screen, but this one can be tested in BIOS.
    Taking CMOS battery out for hours and trying with only one memory or both hard disks didn't work.
    Do I need to install some drivers from DVD during the Windows installation or is the hard disk connections broken or what is the problem? Can't I repair it by myself?
    I'm tired of trying these magic tricks so I really hope that someone can help me. Otherwise I need to buy a new laptop or use it with my USB stick and its live Linux ;( Also battery is dead so it doesn't exist anymore and fan makes noises sometimes and computer gets hot. I'm getting amused when trying to fix it even though almost nothing doesn't work anymore but it's hard to let go of it because I have repaired it so many times and even though it's old it's been working the last year well before this
    I didn't know where to post this because I don't know what the real problem is.

    Welcome to the HP Forums!
    I see you're unable to install Windows on another HDD after experiencing an HDD failure.
    The hard drive not found error would indicate the drive has failed. Not being able to test the drive confirms this. 
    -Source: Resolve Boot Device not Found Error Message.
    The upgrade key you use only applies to the Windows Upgrade ISO and will not allow a fresh install of the operating system if it has nothing to build on, so you are correct in trying the Vista install. When you attempt to install VIsta are you using the HP Recovery Media or are you using the Windows Vista ISO? I would assume the drive that was installed in your notebook was larger than 250GB and would explain why an HP Recovery would fail during formatting but would not explain why the install failed if it was a licensed Windows ISO.
    Have you tried installing Linux onto the HDD instead of using a USB boot? This will help you test the validity of the HDD.
    You can try downloading a version of Windows 8.1 and skip the license key to activate the 30 day trial. (Search Google for Windows 8.1 Pro ISO downloads). Once installed activate Windows using the license key you purchased for an upgrade which theoretically should work.
    Let me know if that helps or if installing Linux to the HDD fails as well.

    My HP pavilion dv7 was upgrading BIOS when it just powered off, now when I trt booting it the screen remains blacks and it makes a noise like its booting, all while the caps lock blinks, PLEASE HELP!!!!!! PLEASE.

  • Pavilion dv7 blue screening - HP support assistant cannot test BIOS or memory modules but BIOS can?

    About a month ago my dv7 started doing something strange - during normal use (not gaming, just word processing, showing a powerpoint presentation, showing a video on youtube, etc.) the cooling fan speed would suddenly ramp up to jet-engine speed and shortly thereafter the computer would blue screen, crash dump, etc. (no, I did not write down any info from the blue screen message - I will do so next time). Having experienced a blue screen issue with a Dell laptop I thought the hard drive was going bad, because about the same time I was suddenly unable to run a backup of the hard drive. After several attempts, I was finally able to backup the hard drive, and then replaced it with a new drive, re-installed OS with my recovery flash drive, worked through all of the windows updates that were recommended, and thought everything would be good to go. Now I have no problems backing up hard drive, etc. Then on day 2, after only a few hours of use, the cooling fan speed suddenly ramped up again and the blue screen returned.
    A friend who is a tech suggested running HP diagnostics on everything, so I rebooted, hit F2, and started by testing the hard drive; as expected, no problems there. I next tried to test the memory (8192 MB total in two modules), and the test failed. I also tried testing the BIOS, and that too failed. The HP diagnostics reported that it couldn't even read the BIOS. Hmmm, strange. So I re-booted, hit F10, and went into the BIOS (BIOS date 10/5/11, revision F.1B). I HAVE NOT IN ANY WAY MODIFIED THE BIOS - I'm good, but not that good. Via the BIOS test utility, I tested both memory modules independently and then together, and everything checked out fine. I also tried switching modules between slots and re-tested via the BIOS utility, and that too checked out. I then returned to the HP diagnostics utility and tried re-testing the memory (both modules together - failed, one module at a time - both failed, in both slots). 
    HP tech experts, can you give me any guidance? This has been a great machine for me, I have taken good care of it, and am hoping to get a few more years out of it (I'm a middle-school science teacher, can't afford another one at this point). If I can't find a fix, I may have to go back to using my antique overhead projector in my classroom...

    Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion dv7 and  getting the BSOD and shutting down. I recommend to restore the BIOS defaults with this document selecting the reloading the BIOS default settings. Not rollback.

  • Pavilion Dv7 4165dx Hard drive failure and performanc​e issues?

    I have a pavilion dv7 4165dx notebook that was working great until a couple of months  when the performance of my machine started to decrease rapidly. I have performance issues with the machine because it takes 1 to 2 minutes to get from the welcome screen to the actual desktop and another 3 to 4 minutes for it to be ready to use. I already upgrade the memory from 4gb to 8gb but instead of going faster it goes slower and i also did a clean install of windows but it didn't help. Before i have problems it took maybe 30 to 50 seconds to go from the welcome screen to the actual desktop and 1 minute and 30 seconds to be ready to use and by the way i use soluto to tell me when the machine is ready for use.Then last week i notice that the headphone jack wasn't working properly so i contact hp and they told me to send them the laptop so i did, they replace the motherboard and they  send it back to me and i just got it today it got a little better but it still lags on the welcome screen and to open programs. I check the memory using memtest 86 and the memory it's fine, but i check the hard drive with HDD Regenerator 2011 and it show i have one delayed sector. Then i check on hd tune pro and it show me some WARNING on section Calibration retry count( as you can see on the picture below)  so my question is should i be worry and send it back to hp or what can i do to fix the problem i am having with this notebook?

    I have the same laptop and have had issues with it since the day i brought it home. I have had it for a year now and am now replacing the hard drive for the 3rd time. My guess would be its your hard drive because most of the issues you seem to be having ar the same ones ive been dealing with for a while. I can say I'm very mad about the quality of this laptop and am in the process of  battling with HP over this issue. If you have a chance go online and look at all the hard drive issues that this laptop has had and even look at the HP forums for this issue it will irritate you and make you wonder why this hasn't been fixed yet!

  • Windows 8 HP Pavilion dv7-4285dx Upgrade results in black screen after intallation finalizes.

    I have a 2011 HP Pavilion dv7-4285dx with Windows 7 64 bit Home premium installed.  The notebook/laptop has a AMD Radeon HD 6300M series display adapter with driver version 9.2.2.0 dated 9/27/2012 and an ATI technologies Intel HD Graphics display adapter with driver version 8.7771.1.0.  The notebook/laptop has not had a hardware upgrade and contiains the orignal factory OS. BIOS is current to latest available.
    The issue I had while upgrading to Windows 8 is after the install finalizes (settings and preferences are entered) and the system boots to the tiles screen, the display works fine.  Clicking to the desktop works only for a few moments before the screen goes dark. Pressing the power button and/or closing/opening the lid results in at times a black screen (no power to the screen) or black screen (power to the screen) or a black screen where only the mouse pointer is visible and moves around the screen.  Restarting the computer results in a repeat of the issue at times while other times it will boot directly to what appears to be the windows desktop. You can interact with the file folder icon on the task bar as well as internet explorer, and you can get the charms bar and tile screen. Any attempt to open computer management or any control panel or task manager will open the window as an icon on the task bar.  You can mouseover the icon to "preview" a small version of the window but you can not click on it to maximize.
    I attempted the following workarounds:
    1) Clean install of Windows 8: Installs but fails with same result as above
    Refresh PC from windows 8 rescue media: Works slightly longer until AMD driver fails and then reverts to situation above. 
    2) Uninstalling all display adapters (via computer management) and then upgrading to Windows 8: Results in microsoft drivers getting installed, works much as refresh above until AMD driver fails and then reverts to above situation.
    3) In Scenarios 1 and 2,  I also tried to use windows update within Win8 to update the drivers there are updated MS drivers available ,(dated as late as 10/27/2012) but intalling those drivers also resulted in a failure of the adapter within a short period of time as did NOT updating the drivers.
    4) Disabling display adapters and then restarting:  Results in a BSOD (Blue Screen) IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Stop: 0x0000000A error during boot as the OS runs into trouble with the driver before Windows 7 boots.  This happens if one or both drivers are disabled.
    5) Disabling display adapters before in-place upgrade to Windows 8 results in the Windows 8 equivalent of a BSOD and results in the system shutting down and then reverting to Windows 7.
    Through research, I determined some ppl had luck connecting another monitor/HD TV through VGA/HDMI and then using the function-screen button to switch, with my system this resulted in the same issue displayed on the TV/Monitor. There are also updates to ATI and Catalyst center available including drivers and installing these do not remedy the issue. Intel was checked and there are no drivers available as HP uses a "custom" driver for intel.  Attempting to install any of these Intel drivers will result in a fail with a compatiblity error.
    Windows 8 has no safe mode ability from the windows 8 rescue media disk, you cannot F-8 as you could in the preview. Safe mode must be reached via charms, settings, startup and then selecting safe mode as a boot option, which is not available as the display adapter malfunctions.  In those scenarios where I was able to get a windows desktop to boot up as in the first paragaph I can get to the restart settings via charms, but clicking to bring up the restart menu requires another window to open which is only visible as a "preview" on the windows task bar.
    if you are going to attempt to try any of these,
    1) Use a third party software to image your pre-win 8 upgrade system that you can boot into from USB or CD;
    2) Before starting the process, disable the UAC prompt and remove any passwords from logon, as those things will require you to interact with the OS and you will not be able to do this when the adapters fail.  The screen will shadow out as it usually does but the prompt will not be viewable.
    3) Create an ISO image of the Win8 install media and write down the product key. If you are able to get a successful boot, before the drivers fail, create a Windows 8 rescue media disk.
    I spoke with HP tech support this morning (10/29/2012) they are aware of the issues and they lie with the display adapters.  They are working toward a solutuion but there are none available at this time and no date when they will be available.  They recommend checking the support website and having the web page autoscan your PC as the drivers will show there when they are posted and they will be installable from Windows 7 so there will be no issue with upgrading to Windows 8.  Bottom line, do not upgrade to Windows 8 at this time.
    MS Tech support escalation tier reps also informed me there is no present workaround available.

     My laptop sat at BestBuy from Friday night until today (10-31-12)! They couldn't figure out how to fix the problem so I finally told them to revert my latop back to Windows 7! I hope HP reads these and will hurry up and make the updates needed so that I can run Windows 8 on my Laptop! I just bought mine in July of last year there is nothing wrong with it and after dropping about $1200.00 for my dv7-4285dx along with the Best Buy Geek Squad package I do not feel like having to drop more money into another laptop!! PLEASE HURRY AND FIX THIS I DIDN"T DROP $69.99 plus tx to not be able to use Windows 8! Even before I did the upgrade I had the GEEk Squad check to make sure I could make the upgrade and was told this laptop well surpasses the required minium to run Windows 8!!!!!!

  • HP Pavilion dv7 overheating issue

    Recently, i bought myself a HP Pavilion dv7-5000ev laptop with a HP Renew warranty (+ 2 year HP Care Pack).
    First time in, the operating system was Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.
    Almost immediately, I found that it was overheating. A prime number calculation stress test + SpeedFan temperature checking showed that cores exhibited extreme temperatures (not falling below 98-99 degrees Celsius). Even after terminating the stress test, the temperatures dropped very slowly (about half an hour, down to 65 degrees, and stopped). I got a suggestion, that a BIOS update would do the trick. It did do the trick (i updated the BIOS to the latest version, provided on HP's official driver download site), but only in terms of half a degree Celsius.
    I sent the laptop back to the store, they replaced the Beats Audio speakers and what they called, the "cooling module". Again, i installed Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, did the stress test again, and temperatures didn't go over 92 degrees.
    The problem is, that it is a little too hot, when idling. It was the same even before updating BIOS and sending it away for maintenance. Even when installing software (which, in my opinion, shouldn't be that much CPU intensive), temperatures boost up to 75-80 degrees.
    Is this normal? Is it normal for my laptop to be idling at 60-65 degrees Celsius and jumping to 80, when doing nothing more than installing random software?

    Here is what happened with my HP DV7 7047 cl. It has a manufacturers defect in it, that I fixed myself. I bought mine at SAMS CLUB in the summer of 2012. It is a i7 beats edition DV7 notebook, I'm guessing the same thing is happening with HP's line of DV6 and DV7 laptops. Mine has a nvidia GPU in it, but they also come with ati radeon GPU's. It isn't surprising they are taking them off the market right now.
    If your laptop has 2 vents, and the one in the back is not blowing air through it then your laptop possibly has the same problem mine had, and you need to take it to replace the inner fan piece which was designed for only one vent. The way it works is both of these vents are made out of aluminum and are separately connected to the CPU and GPU. The one to the side is your GPU one. The aluminum vent in the back cools your CPU. If your CPU isn't getting any ventilation then your laptop wont last long and could possibly start a fire. Here is how I fixed mine by myself. And how you can fix yours too.
    Before taking it apart call HP Support and ask them if you can open it up to "clean it". They will give you permission so it doesn't void the HP warranty.
    My laptop would reach between 70c, 80c, 90c, even 100c and would get extremely hot, but wouldn't overheat. And I was concerned because my laptop is only 3 months old. It would get very hot. So I decided to take it apart and see what was going on inside. I followed the instructions on HP's website, they have online guides and manuals for taking your laptop apart and putting it back together. If you need instructions on finding your manual for your laptop then email me at [email protected]. Doing this fixed my laptop entirely. It never gets hot now, it runs faster and can play games at their maximum settings. The CPU will stay only at 60c, 65c at its tops. It's like magic.
    Here is how you can surgically correct your faulty laptop fan. You're going to make an opening in the fan, cutting a bit of plastic off, so that the other vent to your CPU can get ventilation, if worst comes to worst, you can jot down the name of the fan on the sticker and go to HP's website and order a new piece to replace it for like 50 bucks.
    What you need is...
    A small screwdriver
    A tiny screwdriver
    And (optional) some thermal compound to replace your cooked old compound. Mine was like chalk, I replaced it and it helped cool down my laptop by like 10c. You can get thermal compound at Radio Shack, and the silver stuff is the best.
    First open it up carefully, take your time, and take out the motherboard. Its the big chip with the fan connected to it and the aluminum vents.
    Next, If you're planning on replacing your thermal compound, then unscrew the bolts on the heat sinks and take the big metal pieces off the chip, place your motherboard chip to the side. Now take the piece with your heat sinks, fan and vents connected to it, and turn it around.
    Next unscrew the 4 or 5 tiny bolts behind the fan. So you can take the inner fan piece out. Notice its shape, does it have an opening for your other vent? If not, then make one. Cut an opening in the plastic, the size of the other vent. I used a knife carefully angled to cut the plastic off. Once I cut it, I just bent it off the bottom to take it off. Place the fan back into its frame and screw in the tiny bolts.
    Now replace your thermal compound. You can use a Q tip with the cotton off of it, to scrape off the old gunk - then clean it with a slightly wet Q tip. You can use a little rubbing alcohol but you shouldn't need much. Next put a drop of the new compound on the heat sinks and the chip. Using some plastic wrap on your finger even it carefully on top of the little silver parts where the old stuff was.
    Now you're good to put it all back together. Gently place the heat sinks on the chip and don't move them while you screw the heat sinks back into the chip.
    Carefully put the laptop back together and you're done.
    Here's a picture of my fan, and how I fixed mine. I didn't bother to take the piece out when I took the picture cause those tiny bolts are a PAIN to take out with a knife when you don't have a tiny screwdriver.

  • IDT HD Audio stuttering 3d apps/games/tf2 - Windows 7 x64 - Pavilion dv7-4113tx

    As per the rules I need to state:

    This is cross-posted from freezes/lockups.
    I would file some sort of bug report - but I wouldn't know where to start, I don't work in an area that has anything to do with manufacturing HP products; and this is my free time now  and I don't have intranet access .
    I recently picked up a HP Pavilion dv7-4113tx Entertainment Notebook PC [ XV780PA ] for my personal use and overall it's been pretty good. It comes with windows 7 Home Premium x64 bit.
    there is however an issue that I must bring up in regard to gaming, or i would assume any intensive 3d application, most notably Valve games, my test of choice is Team Fortress 2.
    The game will work fine in native resolution - I get around 100-120fps but about every 30 seconds - 2 minutes, there is a audio/video stutter (by stutter, it will repeat the last .5 seconds of audio about 3-4 times in a loop while the screen will freeze on where the first audio stutter started), which will cause the game to 'freeze' for approximately 2 seconds and then continue where you left off.
    Team fortress 2 is an incredibly time critical multiplayer online game, and this delay essentially means my e-death on multiple occasions.
    I initially thought it was the graphics card, or the drivers - I upgraded the drivers to the latest on the ATI site, that increased my fps, but the stuttering was still there. After searching around on the internet a bit, i found a suggestion to disable the audio driver (device manager lists it as - IDT High Definition Audio CODEC) as a test - so I did so.
    The game purrs like a kitten - absolutely no stuttering. my score went up immediately
    So, my next step was to try and get some Updated Drivers for the IDT Audio device (note, i cannot find a model name anywhere in the hp specs - or on the internet really) - I found out IDT themselves cannot release drivers, that these can only be obtained through OEMs.
    which brings me to here. 
    now - the closest I have found to the drivers I required are here:  IDT High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows 7 
    Note: - it says on the page that they are 32 bit drivers - but I've found they work with the 64 bit version of windows.
    these worked a little better - it fixed another annoying issue - the fact if you use the volume controls in a fullscreen application that it will switch back to the desktop to display the on screen slider bar of the volume going down (which was arguably redundant as windows 7 displays the speaker volume in the bottom right hand corner) - and it just turns the audio down as intended.
    however - the stuttering is still very noticeably present .
    I then tried to use the HP Support assistant  to run automated diagnostics and troubleshoot... which then downloaded the old drivers that gave me that fullscreen volume control issue back again - so i assume the original drivers.
    So I installed the other drivers again.
    My next test will be to use an external USB or firewire soundcard to see if this will allow me have games with sound.
    Can an appropriate agent at HP please address this concern and notify when this bug will be fixed - IDT says they work with OEM's to fix issues regularly on the IDT link above.
    I believe this is such an issue that will likely require a bug fix.
