Pavilion dv7t-4000 video card issue & battery icon shows no power cord yet it is plugged in!

Ok, so I have this witerd issue on a 4 year old laptop that has been a great solid laptop.  However, I've been using it as a desktop with two external monitors atteched (It has VGA and HDMI ports).  In this configuration, the laptop screen itself is blank after windows has loaded. and I have an extended desktop across two external monitors and this had been working great for years.
Ok, now to the problem - a couple of days ago, I started it and only one monitor came on along with the laptop monitor and I was running in duplicate mode on the monitors instead of extended desktop.  The thing I noticed was that  the power icon showed on battery, yet I was plugged in and charging (The charge % was increasing).  At the same time, the graphics properties on the desktop was bringing up Intel graphics instead of my ATI Catalyst.  I shut down and restarted and it came back fine with the power cord showing and ATI running my graphics again; however, when I started today , the same condition occurred.
The other problem associated with this, is if I let it sleep now, upon waking, the laptop wakes up but the monitors do NOT come online and I cant get them to come online in this situation.  I tried unpluggiung and reconnecting but nothing on the ext monitors or the laptop screen.  I do hear a sound indicating windows plug and play has detected the cable being pulled and reconnected but no image .  I eventually had to do a hard power off and restart.
I'd appreciate any help.  This just started in the last week so maybe its a SW issue?  I could roll back to my system restore point from a week ago and see if that fixes it - but maybe its a hardware issue?  Im not sure where to start and would appreciate any insights!  Since then, Ive installed an upgrade to Dashlane PW manager but thats the only SW change.  Thanks in advance...

HI @KeithAusTX ,
Thank you for your query, I will do my best to assist you!
I see that when connected to AC power it shows charging % and is increasing but you are using the Intel graphics.  You did a restart and then the ATI graphics running as usual.   This has happened on more then one occasion.  Your notebook display does not come on when the notebook wakes from sleep.
To start with would you visual inspect the power connection to the notebook and look for any damaged or bent pins.
I would then test and calibrate the battery.
Battery information center
Using and Testing the AC Power Adapter
If the issue remains, I would delete the graphics drivers and reinstall the drivers Using Recovery Manager to Restore Software and Drivers (Windows 7).
Once that step is completed, run the HP Support Assistant  to get any HP updates.
As you mentioned you could do a restore back to when it was working.
The final option would be to do a factory recovery.  The following document has multiple links within to help with doing a restore, recovery and backup.
System Recovery / Backup / Restore
You may also wish to test the hardware for failures just to rule that out. Testing for Hardware Problems Using Hardware Diagnostic Tools (Windows 7)
Good Luck and have a superb weekend!

  • My battery isn't charging, and when I unplug my power cord, it immediately dies.  There is an "X" inside the battery icon, and the power cord light is green...how can I fix this?

    Hi,
I bought a Macbook Pro last February, and this is the first time this issue has occurred.  My computer has been working fine, but this morning the battery icon is showing a big "X" through it, and when I unplug my power cord, the computer shuts off.  Also, the power cord light is green, which I take to mean that it can't be charged anymore.  How can I fix this?
    Thanks!!

I had similar issue with one of the macbooks in the office. Make sure you've got latest firmware installed (run Software Update). This resolved the issue for us instantly (you may need to reboot mac AFTER firmware upgrade for this to work).

  • 2nd hard drive for HP Pavilion dv7t-4000 CTO Notebook - What do I need?

Hi, I have the HP Pavilion dv7t-4000 CTO Select Edition Entertainment Notebook (Product # WV703AV). It has room for two harddrives but only came with one. What would I need in order to install the second hard drive? Would I need just a connecting cable or do I also need caddy or kit?
Also, could I get a solid state? Would my notebook support that or does it only use regular ones?
    Currently, I'm running Windows 7 64bit. I've got a 500GB hd (which came partitioned with hp tools/recovery).
Any help with what I would need for a traditional hdd or ssd would be greatly appreciated. I tried to look through other people's posts first,  but couldn't find anything specific to my model. Thanks for your time!

    Hi:
The only place I know of where you can get a 2nd hard drive kit is from this vendor.
    http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=345
Your notebook should be able to work with a SSD but I cannot guarantee it.
I really don't see any point in adding a SSD unless you make it the primary hard drive, and in order to do that, you would need to get a SSD the same size as the original 500 GB hard drive to use the recovery disks to reinstall the operating system.
Most folks get smaller SSD's and they use the W7 product key to activate a plain installation of W7.
If you can read all 25 characters of your windows 7 product key you can make your own installation media and use that to install Windows on a smaller than 500 GB SSD.
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to a DVD for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.
Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.
Or use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link  below. You need a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.
    http://download.cnet.com/Windows-7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool/3000-18513_4-10972600.html
Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.
The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below.

  • Two video cards issue

Any fix for the "Hardware cannot render at the requested size and depth" when having two video cards issue?

Now, the strange thing is: after a few initial issues one of the macs is doing fine. The second one, on the contrary, is a nightmare. Finalcut gives a green screen of death and hangs up suddenly while performing simple operations (like dropping a clip on the timeline).
I'm thinking of trying to replace the two video cards with an older single dual display card, and giving up the fancy lcd monitors (that i bought at vast cost), at least until apple issues an upgrade that adresses the two video card problem. <
If the machines are mechanically equal, it's obviously not the cards. Although you can only be absolutely certain if you swap the cards between machines and see if the green screen issue follows one or both cards.
However, that new LCD display and card combination doesn't have much time in the pipeline so there could be other issues and you're doing the beta testing for all of us. Blaming the reseller is pointless; no one can keep track of all of these issues. We only find out about them only because of reported failures.
You should research the "green screen" here on the forum. I do not recall if there are display or graphics cards issues associated with it. That seems unlikely. IIRC, it appears to be a QT issue.

  • Video Card issues in WinXP - Left 4 Dead

Just wanted to see if anyone was having issues like I'm seeing in these two pics.
This first pics shows what appear to be polygon regions appearing out of no where.
    http://i44.tinypic.com/2v146ep.jpg
And this 2nd pic shows spikes that appear mostly out of characters but on some objects as well.
    http://i44.tinypic.com/vqhafk.jpg
Usually when I start playing everything is fine but after a 20min or so they will start to appear. Changing some video settings in the game (such as anti-aliasing or resolution) will usually make them disappear for a few minutes but they will then re-appear. My best guess is that this is due to the video card overheating as it doesn't happen right away, but that's just a guess. I tried installing 'speedfan' to increase the fan speed but it does not seem able to control the speed on the video card.
Also, I only have the drivers that have come with the bootcamp installation. On the forums it seems that it is recommended not to install other versions of the drivers so I have not at this point.
I'm running bootcamp (windows xp 32bit) on my MacPro 10.5.5 / 4GB ram (quad core Xenon) with the ATI-X1900. I have the latest 2.1 bootcamp installed. The game runs perfectly beyond these issues, although I do get the occasional stutter or audio repeat.
I don't have any of these issues on TF2.
Does anyone have any suggestions on a possible solution? or does anyone know of a way to control the fan speeds in Windows? In OSX I use smcFanControl to keep the machine a little cooler.
PS. I also heard that some of the ATI-X1900 cards had issues. Can anyone confirm this? If this is the case, can anyone recommend another card for my MacPro? I do occasionally get video card issues in OSX too while doing 3d work.
    Thanks for any help!

Upon inspection of the card it is totally loaded with dust. I found this article:
    http://macsaregreat.com/?p=63
which has some pics and this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1265166&start=0&tstart=0
which discusses many issues as well with the X1900 and Leopard. I first started seeing issues with the card during my 3d work after I installed Leopard.
I'm off to the computer store to pick up some compressed air to try to clean that vent now. I already use smcFanControl already, before using it I was getting card errors every day.
Thanks again for the info regarding the dust on that card.

  • G5 Video Card issue, or is it?

    G5 video issue
    G5 dual 1.8, 6 gig ram, OSX 4.11
AGP card ATI 9800 pro, 256 ram, rom: 113-A14402-116 DVI-D & mac DVI outs
PCI card burned for mac, ATI VGA 32 ram, rom: 113-85501-208
Monitor, KDS flat screen, vga/dvi, connected by dvi
Problem: if system sleeps or monitor sleeps, then monitor does not wake at all or wakes with vertical lines and no discernible images.
Set computer to “never sleep” but last time the problem occurred when the screen saver deployed.
It seems the usb/ keyboard is no longer responsive, can’t tell for certain.
Only way out is cold reboot.
Have cleaned inside, removed all but the two video cards. Normal diagnostics show nothing out of the ordinary, SYS & TechTool.
HOWEVER, when second monitor is connected to second card, problem does not emerge. Even if second monitor is off. When second monitor is disconnected from second card, problem returns.
Is this a MOBO card problem or video card?
If is video, can you recommend best replacement? Use is: graphics, Photoshop & Illustrator, & video editing.

  • Video Card Issue? Seems atypical.

2012 Macbook Pro 15" Mountain Lion   Bootcamp Win 7 Pro.  While idle in Windows, screen went to gray and fans went high gear.  Goes to gray on reboot after Windows startup logo.  Goes to gray after initial spinning wheel on Mac side.  In Mac Safemode, after the loading of the progress bar, the screen cycles through about 3 seconds of fast moving lines and distortion then goes to a gray screen with hard to see verticle pinkish lines.  BUT the computer still boots into Windows safemode with Networking and works fine, so this does not seem to be the dreaded 2012 video card issue.  Am stumped!

  • Battery Icon Shows "18% available (plugged in, charging)" But Battery Does Not Charge

The PC does operate on the battery only, just fine (so far, as there is only 18% remaining).
The PC operates with AC plugged in also.
LED by AC input is amber (looks orange to me).
According to the User Guide that indicates charging.
    Battery Check status is "OK"
I have had it on charge for over 12 hours and still at 18%.
When starting up, the battery icon shows charging movement then stops at a low level.
I measured the charger output at 20VDC (no load). Which is as specified.
I have tried all the suggestions about uninstalling and reinstalling  the ACPI Complient Control Method.......etc.
Removing battery, shutting down and all the rest of suggestions.
    No help.
I was told there was a BIOS update which I installed. (I'll post about that in another board). No help.
If I ever get this fixed it's going back to the vendor, Should not have this happen with less than 3 months since new.
Just got it back from repair for battery latch falling off. (Back plate was changed.)
    Anything new would be appreciated.

I have an older Power Mac G5 Quad, and my video card just went out. I am trying to find a video card that will work for my Power Mac. I have duel screens but I can't seem to find the appropriate video card. The serial number on my computer is: RM620603R6W. Apple won't help me because the computer is older than suggested. Please give me the exact video card that will work best for my computer.

Hi Mike, make sure the card has Mac ROM, or is a PC card with Mac ROMs flashed to it...

  • My 27" imac won't boot in normal mode. The screen stays white. I have upgraded to Yosemite. However, the computer does boot in safe mode. Could this be a virus related issue or possibly a video card issue?

My 27" iMac will not boot in normal mode. The screen stays white. The computer will boot in safe mode. Could this be virus related or is it possibly an issue with my video card. Before this happened, my computer screen was flashing weird things and the computer would unexpectedly power down.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Help!  Video card issues- Slow during games

Hey everyone, so heres my problem. I just got a brand new mbp 13" with 4 gigs ram with the new battery and everything. I have the game monkey island and spore on my mac. I also have windows xp installed on the other partition of my hard drive. I just need windows for one piece of software I use that I accidentally bought for my pc that died so now I'm stuck running it on my mac in windows. I also have modern warfare 2 on the windows side. Up until a couple days ago all the games were running really great, however yesterday something popped up on my windows saying something about malware (ughhh) and then call of duty on the windows side was running completely sluggish and when I restarted the computer in mac and tried to run spore or monkey island both of them are running slow too. What is weird is that it is only sluggish when running these games, never when watching movies or anything else that requires a video card. Could I have got a virus thats also affecting my mac os. Could this be a hardware issue? I'm just not sure. Would appreciate any help

If you got a virus on your Windows partition, that in itself wouldn't affect Mac OS X partition directly. If you have a Windows partition you should take all the usual Windows related measures to ensure your system is protected against Virus/ Trojans/ Malware etc by installing Anti Virus software.
Have you reset your PRAM (and/or Permissions)? Did this have any effect?
Since your MBP is so new, if a PRAM (& permissions) reset didn't help, I'd make an appointment to see a Genius at your local Apple Store and get them to check your MacBook Pro over.

  • HP Pavilion G6 - Radeon graphics card issue

    Hi all!
I have a HP Pavilion G6-2240SH notebook, that has two graphics card. I'm using Windows 8.1 operating system
The motherboard's graphics card works correctly. But there's a hyper-super other card: Radeon HD 7600M
I tried to use the official driver from HP's site, and other drivers from the official Radeon's site, but it doesn't work.
The operation system tells me that "Windows has stopped this device becouse it has reported problem (Code 43)".
Do you have any idea what could be the problem with my video card?
    Thanks...
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi:
On the models with the AMD/Intel switchable graphics, you have to use the graphics driver on the support and driver page for your notebook.
    See if this works...
Download and run the driver again from your notebook's support page.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-113258-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en...
Go to the device manager and click on the problem amd graphics adapter.
Click on the driver tab.  Click on Update Driver.  Select the browse my computer for driver software method and browse t the driver folder that was created when you ran the file.
That folder will be located in C:\SWSetup\sp59936.
Make sure the include subfolders box is checked and see if the driver installs that way.
If that doesn't work, see if this driver works instead...

  • X58 PRO won't boot (memory or video card issue???)

    Hi all,
this is my first message here.
I have recently bought a X58 PRO motherboard to which I have connected the following devices: one HD, one DVD, the CPU (i7 950), one Video Card (GeForce 6600 pci-express) and three DDR3 modules from Corsair (named CMT6GX3M3A2000C8). According to Corsair website the modules CMT6GX3M3A2000C8 run on thie X58 PRO.
I have turned on the system, but the screen remains black and the motherboard issues an intermittent buzz sound.
    Besides:
The led close to the pci-express (where the video card is connected) is on.
The 5 CPU leds are all turned on.
The led close to the memory socket is off.
As far as I know, usually the intermittent buzz means that the motherboard doesn't recognize either the RAM or the video card, but I don't know if the buzz is different case by case (can be buzz be different according to the issue?) and in the manual I didn't find a troubleshotting chapter.
Is there a way which allow me to better identify where the issue would be (in memory or in Video Card... or something else)?
I have not tested neither the memory nor the video card on another system, thus I don't know if one of them is faulty.
    Can anyone please help me?
    many thanks in advance!
    Lorenzo

    Do a CMOS clear>>Clear CMOS Guide<<
Only insert one mem module. Check all your power connections to the board/s again that they are secure. You may want to reseat your CPU and check carefully that all the contact pads on the CPU do have imprints.
Ok, I'll try it this evening!
In the meanwhile, I thank you.
