Pavilion g6 Notebook Restarts upon Shut Down/Hibernate/Sleep after Windows 8 Upgrade

Hello,
I've been dealing with this issue for several months now, since I upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8. My computer will no longer correctly shut down, hibernate or sleep- everytime I do one of those things it restarts. To be more specific, it will shut down when I ask it to, but upon turning it on again, no matter what amount of time passes it will restart rather than start up and once the operating system is up it gives a hopelessly vague 'your PC encountered a problem' message. It has NOT shown me the blue screen. The error message is a banner across the screen asking if I would like to submit details. When I close the machine, my settings tell it to hibernate, and upon opening it, it restarts.
Initially, I had another huge problem with windows 8 refusing to update anything- itself, or any of my programs, it would go all the way through the process only to fail at the very end. Everytime it restarted inappropriately it would attept to update, fail, then 'revert changes'. So I did a Windows 8 'refresh' which solved the updating errors and everything should be currently up to date.

I have a pretty miniscule understanding of computers, but I had a friend do some research for me and he said he couldn't find any other people experiencing this problem. We tried updating all my drivers. The best we could come up with is that Windows 8 isn't completely compatible with my machine.
I would really appreciate some help on this subject and I am a student and I drag my laptop around with me all day and it gets pretty time consuming to wait for it to restart when I need it between classes.
Thanks!
Ella

Hello Ellabelle,
Your computer will not wake up correctly.
It sounds like you may need to completely reinstall windows 8.
Here is a link to all the driver updates for your system.
At the top of the page there is an option to scan now and let HP scan your system for missing and out of date drivers.
Use this option.
Let me know how everything goes.

  • MacPro shut down instaed Sleep after Mountain Lion Update

Sleep Mode works not longer after updateted to Mouintain Lion. It shut down and needs quite longer on a next Computer start - longer as if started normal after normal shut down before.

There have been many Sleep issues reported, search them out here. One thing you should try, is re-installing OS X.
Boot up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume.
The screen should give you these choices...
    Restore from TM backup
    Reinstall Mac OS X
    Get help online
    Disk Utility
First run Disk Utility Repair Disk, if you get errors run until no errors reported or reports "the disk cannot be fixed". Then, choose Reinstall OS X. This will be an install "in place" and shouldn't effect any of your own data or settings.

  • BlackBerry z10 shuts down at 23% after os upgrade 10.3.1.1565

After the os upgrade 10.3.1.1565 my BlackBerry z10 shuts down at 23% of battery level

Due to the number of problems with "upgrading" to this OS level, I suggest you try the very clean and very forceful AutoLoader OS Reload:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-10-OS-Device-Software/Upgrading-OS10-devices-using...
Beware that it is completely destructive...the device will be "like new"...no data, no apps, no accounts, etc. Be sure you take a full backup first, as well as make full manual documentation of all apps, accounts, configurations, etc. Sometimes a restore reintroduces the very corruption one is trying to eliminate, and manual reconfiguration is necessary.
You can also use this to fall back to a prior OS if you desire...you can install any OS level for which you can find an AutoLoader. (Hint...search over on the CB site!)
Good luck and let us know!

My laptop after restart or shutting down doesn't starting.
I need to turn off the computer and wait 10 seconds and try again, after that it start ok.
    Any suggest?

To be honest I dont know if there is the problem actually. Most important thing is that your notebook starts. I dont know if this is so important if this happen after 5 or 10 seconds.
We dont know which notebook model do you have, how old it is, since when you have noticed this strange issue, so it is not easy to understand the problem.
    >My laptop after restart or shutting down doesn't starting.
It is not easy to understand this statement. Does it mean that when you click on restart or shutdown option in start menu notebook react properly but cannot restart or be switched on immediately?

    Could this be a virus?

An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.

If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using Dr.Web Light from the App Store. It's free, and since it's from the App Store, it won't destabilize the system. If you prefer one of the better known commercial products, then Thomas recommends using Sophos.(Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.) If you already use Sophos, then be aware of this if you are using Mavericks: OS X Mavericks- Sophos Anti-Virus on-access scanner versions 8.0 - 9.1 may cause unexpected restarts
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

As the last post suggests, call Apple and order a replacement original disc for about $17.  They will ask you the model and serial numbers.
Your retail version of Snow Leopard OS 10.6.3 will not work on that Mac as it requires a minimum of OS X 10.6.7 to boot and operate.
Another alternative is to again borrow another Mac to install your retail Snow Leopard into an external HD or partition, upgrade it to 10.6.8 and then clone it back to a partition on your MBP.

  • OS 10.4.6 won't restart or shut down

I installed 10.4.6 on my powerbook g4 that was running 10.3.9 without a problem. Big mistake.
I repaired permissions, then custom installed 10.4.6 skipping the foreign language fonts and printer drivers I don't need.
Installation was successful. Set up assistant started up but I skipped it because I had no connection to the net when I installed.
I got my desktop, everything looked fine but the computer would not restart or shut down. Force quit was not a option.
The only way to shut down the computer was to hold down the power button.
I started up the computer, repaired permissions with DU and then put it through Cocktail. No indicated problem until Cocktail tried to restart. It didn't work.
I restarted with shift-safe boot, but the problem remained. My formerly reliable PBg4 will not restart or shut down with this new OS 10.4x
    Any suggetions? Thanks.

    Steve:
My formerly reliable PBg4 will not restart or shut down with this new OS 10.4x
It is not Tiger that's causing the problem. Tiger will run fine on your PBook. It's because you short-circuited the process. Next time around, go through the setup and when it comes to registering with Apple, click later. As baltwo said, if you don't have a backup you will need to re-install.
    Good luck.

  • X200 hangs during restart or shut down when connected to ultrabase

My X200 hangs during a Windows restart or shut down when I'm connected to my ultrabase.  The laptop appears to go through most of the processes to restart/shut down but eventually hangs at a blue screen with unmoveable cursor (note, not a Windows BSOD). I'm forced to perform a hard shut down to turn off the laptop.
This hang at restart/shut down only occurs when I'm connected to the ultrabase.

Just as a thing to try, and this is assuming that you all have an integrated camera, please try this camera driver and let the board know the results:

I have 3 minis that just spin when you hit restart or shut down. You have to hard reboot... the old firmware update I found is not needed on that computer according to the computer. Running 10.4.11 on all. Any ideas?

Are these Intel Minis, or the older PPC G4 Minis?
What is the history of these particular Minis and how are they being used?

  • IMac won't restart nor shut down

    Hello,
I purchased a new iMac about three months ago and, since receiving it, I notice that it will not usually shut down or restart.  It gets as far as the spinning/rotating pinwheel (not the rainbow colored one) and just hangs up there.  I've let it sit there for as long as 25 minutes...it just stays stuck there and the only way out is to press and hold the power button down to force a shutdown.  And this happens whether I'm restarting or shutting down.
Mine is a 21.5 inch iMac running Yosemite (currently 10.10.2)
    2.7 Ghz Intel Core i5
    16 GB RAM
I'm not very sophisticated with the internal hardware, so I'm not sure what other information would be helpful to list.
Does anyone know how to remedy this problem?  Or do I have to take the computer back? (Hoping to avoid the latter)
    Thanks
    Chris

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Disconnect all peripherals, (unmount any firewire devices before disconnecting) just your Apple keyboard and mouse and test.
If it is not a peripheral check in /startup items. OS X installs no items to that file by default, so anything there is yours. Also check System Preferences>> accounts >>login items and deselct them.

  • 15" powerbook won't restart or shut down

    Hi All,
My PB 15" has a curious problem of not restarting or shutting down via the apple menu. I can restart and shutdown using sudo shutdown -r now through the terminal. If I try through the apple menu nothing happens - not even the desktop is unmounted. Similarly when I run a software update that requires shutdown/restart it does not do it when I press the button. It will ONLY shutdown and restart from the command line. I originally encountered this problem with Panther and was hoping an upgrade to Tiger might fix it, it has not. I am *pretty sure* that reinstalling the OS will fix it, but this is a pain in the neck!
    any ideas appreciated!
    Thanks.
