Pavilion g6 turns on but screen stays off
My laptop screen will not turn on. I hear the laptop itself turn on but screen does not turn on. This is the second time within a year that I've had problems with this laptop. I've tried the hard reset and tried powering it up without the battery and just the power cord and nothing. Please help! I'm lost on what to try next.
Hi @sanaa0415
Please post the full product number for your notebook. See the following, if you need help with that information.
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Is there any sign that the display is getting power, a slight flicker, or a bit of backlighting, to indicate the display is powered?
Do you see anything on the display at all during startup, such as error messages?
Was there anything done to the notebook just prior to the display going out on you? Software or driver updates, new hardware, or anything accidental.
For now check out these pages and see if anything changes.

My macbook pro will turn on but screen stays black.
My macbook pro will turn on but screen stays black. There is no sound on start up and keys dont light up. I have done all the resets:
I disconnected the computer from the power cord, and from all other cables.
I held down the power button for several seconds to turn off the computer.
I let it sit 5 minutes.
I restarted the laptop while holding down the Shift key and nothing happened.
Holding down Command, Option, P, and R to reset your PRAM and NVRAM
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379The only thing I haven’t tried is “floating” the computer. I’m not ready to heat it up to the melting point.
I need lots of help!!! any ideas? Its a MacBook Pro 15” or 17.5” about 5 years old. Its about 2 updates behind (OS: Snow Leopard)Zane W is giving you good advice. Take it to an Apple store genius bar and have them examine it for free. You then will know what the issues are and then can make informed decisions.

Imac turns on but screen stays black ?
imac turns on but screen stays black ? i can hear it operating ...
Hope this helps:
As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
SMC RESET
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
Wait 15 seconds.
Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

Lights light up but screen stays off. Toshiba Satellite A505
Hi
So i searched online and others with this model seem to have the same problem and I'm wondering if anyone has found a solution. So pretty much after putting my computer to sleep or shutting it down, when I press the power button or hit a key to turn it back on the lights light up. By that I mean the lights on the keyboard and I can hear the laptop fan turn on also. But the screen stays off and the lights just stay on. If I hit the power button again, the lights turn off immediately and if i hit it again they turn back on. At first it was only once in a while but now I can't get it to boot up for hours and almost a full day. It's not the screen because if it was it wouldn't stay on once it was on but it does. My laptop is less than a year old Please I don't want to have to buy a whole new one when I bought this one with my own cash for college. Any help would be great. I've tried battery drain and nothing. Tried taking out the battery and using just the power cord. Same. It boots up normally whenever it wantsIf the computer is less than a year old, it should still be under warranty. I would call the Call Center at 800-457-7777 and let them know how this computer has become intermittent and not bringing up the video. This sounds like a hardware problem and the computer needs to be serviced.

Whenever I close my laptop then open it it does not turn back on, the screen stays off but I will hear the fan running. I then have to physically press the power button for it to turn on. Help!

One of my two screens stays off after coming from standby - OSx 10.10.2 MacMini
When 'reviving' my macmini after not using it for a while one of my screens stays black (The screen stays off so there is no contact from the mac). Even after logging in again the screen stays black.
I can get it to work again by disconnecting both screens and plugging them back in, but that is not a real solution of course. Also, after switching the position of the screens the other screen stays off, so the problem should be in the connection.
I've got a relatively new MacMini with OSx 10.10.2 and have the two screens (same size but not identical) attached via two 'mini displayport to DVI adapters'.
Does anyone have any idea what can cause this?Hi Snery,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I know you have already started some troubleshooting for this situation where your second monitor is not connecting when you wake your Mac mini from sleep. To continue this troubleshooting process, I would suggest reading over and working through the steps in the attached article to help isolate and resolve this issue.

[solved] Laptop screen stays off
After updating today which only gave me a new kernel(which I had been ignoring), mkinitcpio-busybox and systemd 192-1, the screen stays off when I open the lid.
Normally when I close the lid, walk into another room and open the lid, the screen is on before I get the lid to 45 degrees. This morning after updating and rebooting to use the new kernel and using it for a while, I shut the lid to carry the laptop to a new location and when I opened the lid the screen stayed off.
I thought the f*&^%$&ng screen had died.
I'm guessing it's something in the systemd update that is suspending or hibernating the system as a keypress and 5-10 sec wait has the screen back on but I don't want that. Can I get a clue on what to undo so I have the usual behaviour back?
Last edited by moetunes (2012-09-28 06:47:25)If you don't want things to ever change, Slackware might be a better option for you than a very fast paced rolling release like Arch.
With systemd, Linux is seeing more change than it's seen in a long time. -
Phone is ON but screen is OFF!
Tried EVERY suggestion phone is only 2 months old! Replaced screen. It started! screen and all. Started trying to recover from "factory reset". As soon as I powered down to test it. SAME PROBLEM. Keyboard lights on. No screen. What else can I do?!!!!!!!!!! I'm tired of spending money on a bad product that obviously needs to be recalled.
I swear you're **bleep** me off! I've already reloaded the OS. My iMac will not turn on, the screen stays black, makes a whistling sound 3 short, 3 long, 3 short, well maintained while keeping on, what solution do you have?
For some reason its firmware seems to have been corrupted. Read:

iMac (Mid 2007) and later models: About startup tones -
Screen stays off after wake up from standby
So this happens most often when I have an external display connected, but has happened otherwise to me and my friend who has identical macbook.
usually, I'll connect the external display, then shut the screen on the macbook, then wake the macbook with an external mouse or keyboard, and use the macbook with the external display. When I'm done and want to disconnect the external display, i'll unhook it, and then open the screen on the macbook. when I open the screen, the standby light (the one that pulsates when in standby, and stays bright when screen is off and computer is not in standby) turns off, signifying that the computer has woken and the screen is running, but the screen remains off. the function keys for volume or contrast make nothing appear on the screen, and it is completely off, rather than just showing a black screen. if I shut the screen when this is happening, the standby light turns back on, and upon opening screen again, the standby light turns off again, but still, no display. it seems the only way to alleviate the problem is to hold the power button for 5 seconds. I've tried resetting the pram, and everything else you can reset upon booting, as well as doing the thing where you take the battery out, disconnect power, and hold power button for 7 seconds. nothing stops it from happening.
If i open the screen before disconnecting the external display, it usually works fine, but sometimes it happens without an external display ever being present.
any ideas?
-TimI use a dual monitor system at work all the time. The best thing to do is to disconnect the second monitor while your computer is still awake and open. It doesn't like it when you put it to sleep and then disconnect. It's probably like putting toothpaste in the ear of your best friend when he's drunk and passed out. Then when he wakes up he wonders why he can't hear out of one ear.

Hello mac community, I am new,
I updated a program today everything was working fine yesterday and now today I was updating PLAY a music engine program it seems to have caused the mac to go crazy. I also updated VE PRO 5 another music program. Everything has gone crazy. It turns on but then then the screen goes black after a while 5-10mins. I managed to get the crash report.
Why is the graphics card all of a sudden effected by program updates.

Yesterday upon startup for the first time the screen went black. Had to do a force shutdown. Unplugged all external devices. Reset everything as well. Slowly checked everything was on the phone with Apple even during the process. Seemed to correct the issue. Then of course I get off the phone, restarted my computer and it goes black randomly again.
Rebooted fine. Checked all my hard disks internal and external, verified and repaired permissions on main drive and clone. Since then nothing yet...But I still feel its either the Video Card or the Monitor as everything else is fully operational.
I plan on taking it in to look at as my applecare is up in November but I cant point my finger on it. And really am trying to avoid lugging the mac pro and monitor in at the same time...(Not the easiest thing with lack of parking in nyc..)
If the display was dying I feel like it would have konked out already.
The funny thing is I have had to replace video cards and monitors in the past but this time I cant quite figure out what the **** is going on.
I am leaning towards the video card as I noticed it flickered a little when opening plug in windows in pro tools or multiple windows in sfari but it doesnt make sense.
Worst part is I cant do a hardware test cause for some reason this computer doesnt have the software installed. It does nothing when I hold down the D button...
I totally baffled but the randomness of this. -
Late 2009 27" iMac boots but screen stays black..what's the cause?
When I power up my mac (iMac11,1) I get the familiar "bong" sound and the fans and drives start to spin, but the screen remains black and unresponsive. If I turn the computer on and off often enough I get the screen to light, and once it's on all is good, but as soon as I do a shutdown I have to go through the same process of turning the machine on and off until the screen lights.... anyone know what the cause is? Someone mentioned it might be a logic board failure...if that's the case could I replace it? and if I can replace it can I put a more recent model board in my comp? seeing as they are like $800 a piece Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
Steve

OS X LionThanks for the response BGreg
I ran the Apple hardware test and came up with the same error twice, error code: 4MOT/4/40000003:HDD-1313 The last four digits changed but everything else was the same.
According to some other msg boards this error code has something to do with the fan on the logic board and a possible connection to the hard drive overheating due to the dying fan... The fan sounds fine and I can't see how that relates to my black screen but at least it's something. My mac is out of warranty so I'm going to attempt opening it and cleaning and or replacing the fan myself, possibly the hdd as well, it's a lot cheaper that getting a mobo replacement lol $800-$1500, I keep extensive backups of my data so I'm not too worried. Thanks for your input, I'll let you know how the repairs go.
Cheers,

IMac turns on, but display is off
Hi Everyone,
Last night I downloaded a couple of updates for windows after installing via boot camp. After the updates i shut the computer off from windows.
This morning I get up to turn on my iMac and i here the boot up sound, my mouse turns on, but my monitor wont turn on.
Any ideas?
Thanks!Hello
Well, this is a strange issue. Its not easy to say what the problem can be.
But first of all you should remove the battery and AC adapter for 1, 2 hours.
After this procedure use the power supply for the working test.
If the problem still valid, I assume that its a hardware malfunction.
In this case the best way is to contact the service partner.
Best regards -
Imac G5 20" makes startup sound, and fan kicks in, but screen stays black
Hello. I have read the many similar postings and tried alot of ideas with no luck. Here are the specs on the model:
G5 20"/2.0/512mb/250gb/Super/56k/BT/AP EMC2056 Model A1076
When you push the power button, you get the bootup sound, and the fan turns on. Then 30 seconds later, the fan goes into hyperdrive. The whole time the screen stays black. I have tried resetting the pram, get no sound then. I have tried the internal startup button below the fan housing, and it does NOT have the 2nd button there as it is an ambient light model. So I held the power button and plugged in the power cord, still nothing. When plugged in, the 1st green light lights up on logic board. When I hit the power, the 2nd green light lights up. I have tried an external monitor with the adapter plug and still no picture. I do not even hear the hardrive try to read. Could it be a power supply? What are the other 2 lights on the logic board for, as there are a total of 4? I have not tried to boot from a cd or change the battery yet. I don't know if there is a point in doing that, as the screen remains black. I cannot use a conventional pc power supply tester either. Any other ideas on this situation?"Could it be a power supply?"
More than likely if everything else possible has been ruled out. Your model G5 had an extension repair program which has long expired for your exact issue. Shame you missed it.
"I have not tried to boot from a cd or change the battery yet. I don't know if there is a point in doing that, as the screen remains black."
You won't know if it will do any good until you at least give it try. You should also run Apple's Hardware Test from the Install DVD #1. The DVD label will tell you which key to boot up from to run the AHT.
