Pavilion Slimline s7700e Display brightens but is blank when waking from sleep.

When the computer wakes from sleep it seems to come up normally but the screen doesn't work. It brightens and there is a line across the top of the screen but it doesn't show anything. If I shut the computer down by holding the power button in and start it up again everything comes up normally.
I have recently assumed care of this computer. In investigating this problem I found that the computer had never been updated. Have since installed all Vista updates. Went to HP site and installed updates (including BIOS), changed power options and am still having the problem.
Do not know what else to do.
Would appreciate any ideas.
Thank you

Hello BrotherLouis,
Welcome to the Forums!
I saw your post about the monitor on your HP Pavilion Slimline s7700e CTO Desktop PC showing a line across the top of the screen when it wakes up from sleep mode. I am going to recommend looking at the troubleshooting guides I have located for you below. The first link is specific to your exact issue and the second is covering all Display Quality Issues for the monitor.

  • Display slow to come on when waking from sleep.

There have been quite a few entries of similar problems lately with no real answers that I found.
I have a FW800 dp 1.42 machine running 10.4.11. When coming up from sleep the machine comes up but the display may say black for up to 5 min. This is with the original video card. When I switch to the 9800 Pro card a screen come up with an image of the card and the molex power connector blinking. The 9800 problem started about a year ago so I just installed the original video card and all worked good till recently.
Doing PMU rest does nothing and I also replaced the battery and that did nothing.
    1. How does one check to see if the power supply is working correctly without just replacing it?
    2. ATI says that the power supply is what is causing the 9800 blinking Molex connector image but the machine worked correctly with the original video card. Could it be that the power supply is just taking a long time to come up to a stabilized voltage?
I could not find a definitive corrective action on similar post.

    Hi-
When I switch to the 9800 Pro card a screen come up with an image of the card and the molex power connector blinking.
I trust that power is connected to the molex connector of the Radeon. Also, is the fan running properly? Have you tried pulling power from a different connector?

Is this with a 9000 Pro? Geforce4 Ti? What display are you using? ADC? DVI? VGA?

    Doesn't sound impossible.

Here are two links to two pages from the MDD Service Manual that provide instructions on how to test the PSU.

  • Fixed: Screens completely blank when waking from sleep.

Setup: I am connected to two 24" displays (one an HP and one a Dell).  Both are at the same resolution (their max) which happens to be the suggested resolution according to OS X.  Both are connected via the displays' respective HDMI ports with one (the Dell) obviously connected to the Mac mini's MiniDisplay port via an adapter (cannot remember if third party or offical Apple version) and one (the HP) connected to the Mac mini's HDMI port.  The Mac mini is a mid-2010 [2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo (P8600)] with 8GB of RAM.
Problem: Since upgrading to Mavericks (completely clean install after wiping drive), my screens would go on but were completely black whenever waking my Mac mini from sleep.  Fortunately, I tried typing in my password even though I could see nothing and, voila, I could once again see my desktop.  For several months, this method acted as my temporary fix.
Long-term Solution: In Displays in System Preferences, there were two display icons depicted: one with a menubar at the top and one without which denote which is the main display (the HP is on the left and was the one designated as the main display).  I dragged the icon for the main display to the opposite side of the display depicted without a menubar, thus changing which display (from HP to Dell) is the main display.
Now, whenever I wake the Mac mini from sleep, I not only can see the login window but also the login window desktop art behind it versus two monitors that are on with nothing but dark, black screens.
Observation: I find it fascinating that the Dell, that is hooked to the Mac mini via a HDMI to MiniDisplay port adapter, being made the main display fixed the solution unless there is some favoritisim written into the OS that makes the MiniDisplay port always trump the HDMI port on the Mac mini.  There may be some credence to this theory as, whenever I wake the Mac mini, the login window is always on the HP even though the Dell is now the "main display" accrodign to the Display panel in System Preferences.
Hopefully, others will benefit from sharing my experience.

MAJOR AMENDMENT TO THE POST ABOVE: Please disregard the suggestion to switch sides for the main display by dragging the designated main display to the opposite side of the other display using the Display panel in System Preferences.  Instead, again in System Preferences' Display panel, simply drag the what looks to be the menu bar from one monitor to the other as in previous versions of OS X; this avoids the problem of having to unintuitively drag the mouse away from the monitor that you are actually trying to drag it toward.  I initially tried to use this method but for some reason I was unable and thought that, perhaps due to the introduction of menubars now being accessible on both displays in Mavericks, that there was some sort of smart voodoo going on in Mavericks and that it would not be an issue.
When I realized it was indeed an issue (but unfortuantely after posting my findings earlier today above), I went back and tried again and this time was successful in dragging only the menubar in Display preferences from one monitor's icon to the other. I also switched the display placement so that, when I drag the mouse between screens, it makes sense again.
I then put the Mac mini to sleep again.  When I woke it from sleep, I noticed that the login window had switched screens and thus blows my hypothesis that there is an OS level preference for the MiniDisplay port over the HDMI port on the Mac mini.  More importantly, I still can actually see the login window to know that I am typing somewhere that will restore access to the desktop.
Apolgoies for any confusion and hope this fix assists someone who is worried that they are potentially locked out of their Mac.

  • Detect display when waking from sleep?

Is there any way to force the display detection when waking from sleep? I find that if the mini wakes before the monitor is on, i get a blank screen. When the monitor is on before waking, everything is normal.
I have the DVI-Detective, and the problem is actually worse when using it -- nothing is detected when waking up, no matter if the display is on or not.
    My specs:
    OS 10.5
    C2D, 2Ghz - 2GB RAM
    Sharp Aquos 52inch
All standard HD resolutions work fine - it's just now a matter if figuring out how to force the mini to detect the display...
Surely there must be a way to do this?

Great that you got it working. It seems what is happening when the TV is switched off is that the Mac can no longer see the EDID data. Basically, it's the same as if a hot-unplug event had occurred from OS X's perspective. The mini thinks the TV's video cable has been unplugged, so it thinks it is running headless, which of course it is not. And for some reason not completely clear to me, when the TV's power is restored, a hot-replug event is not triggered and the mini still thinks it's running headless. Maybe you are right that it is removed from the list of connected devices for good. But it isn't supposed to work like that.
The DVI Detective is the right tool for the job in cases like this, so it's good you have one and it's good you got it working. I agree it would be nice if there was more override control within OS X for times like this when things go wrong. But if more TV and 2nd/3rd tier monitor makers paid more attention to computer plug-and-play, then these things would work right in the first place. Your TV is in violation of the plug-and-play standard because the standard calls for the host (Mac mini in this case) to be able to power the ROM and I2C bus within the TV even if the TV is in a powered down state. Clearly your TV isn't doing this.

  • Missing sound + missing USB power (sometimes) from Thunderbolt Display when waking from sleep

    Hi
Two problems - one of which is driving med crazy!!
Have the latest updates, and the display is connected to a MBA (mid 2011).
The two are almost alwayes connected, and every time I wake the MBA from sleep, the Thunderbold Display does not "support usb sound" - the sound options are only MBA and headphones. Only a restart will give me the option to use Thunderbolt as sound output: WHAT TO DO!?!?!!
Sometimes when waking from sleep the USB in the Display seems to be "off" - the will not charge my devices (iPhone, iPad etc.). Only reboot seems to fix this... I have seen this in other discussions but not found a permanent solution - any thoughts?

Same here but reinstalling OSX is a bit drastic. I solved the problem by deleting a preference.
Go to Macintosh HD then System then Library then Preference panes then Sound.prefPane
Delete Sound.prefPane (you need to type your password).
    Logout or restart.
This has happend twice this week so WHY is this suddenly occurring?
    Hi,
I found this solution in the forum, but I can't find it again. I had cut and pasted it into a text file, because it solved my problem. I just don't want to take any credit for it. It did work for me. I had no problems for 3-4 weeks with the monitor, I have had the sound problem since last Friday. Very frustrating.

  • Monitor Blanks in and Out When Waking From Sleep

Since getting my Mac Pro (with Apple installed RAM and NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT), I've noticed that the screen does not immediately turn on when waking from sleep, as my older Macs did. Rather, it turns on for a split second, goes blank for two seconds, turns on again for a split second, goes off again for a second or more, and then comes on permanently.
This behavior only occurs when waking from sleep; it does not occur when the monitor turns on from the active screen saver.
Is this normal for the MAC Pro with an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT? I have a HP w2408h monitor with a DVI to HDMI cable. Everything else works fine, including all video behavior.
    Thank you.

Hm. Bluetooth, interesting. Thanks for the idea.
I just opened the lid to see about the BT setting and the display didn't go off-on. The BT is off, I'm pretty sure I did that when setting it up as I don't use BT for anything.
I wasn't suspecting anything was seriously wrong, it's just that quick-on feature was highlighted as a selling point and I was curious about the glitch, if it was a setting I could change, for instance like you've highlighted. Annoying when things don't work as advertised.
And if I show the machine off to colleagues and friends, that will be a bad first impression they will want explained.

  • Losing Displays Color setting when waking from sleep

    Hey y'all!
I haven't seen this specific problem addressed anywhere in the forums - I have a Pismo 500 running 10.3.9. The problem is that when I wake the Pismo from sleep, nine times out of ten, it defaults to the uncalibrated display space. If I open the Prefs pane, the Displays>Color tab shows the correct calibrated profile selected, but the colors and such are way off. If I just click on the selected profile, it goes back to that profile correctly - but that's too many mouse clicks just to see correctly after waking!
The confusing thing is that this problem never shows up during starts/restarts - during the boot process, the Pismo correctly applies the selected profile and the change is noticable (my display is natively WAAAAY too blue/cyan for my tastes and line of work). So it works from a standing start, and from a warm reboot, just not waking from sleep.
The problem didn't manifest until after I moved from 10.2.x to 10.3, but that move solved so many other problems, I'm still happy I did it.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi,
I do have a work around this problem.
Go to mac hd, to users, to what looks like a house, to library, to colorsync, to profiles. Open profiles and take that profile and put it on the desktop.
Next go to mac hd, to library, to colorsync, to profiles, to displays.
Open displays and place the profile on the desktop in the there.
    That solved my problem.

  • External display has no menu bar/dock when waking from sleep in clamshell mode

After Mountian Lion upgrade, external display shows no dock or menu bar when MBP wakes from sleep in clamshell mode.  I have to open and close the lid of the laptop to sort it out.  Any ideas?

MacBook is connected to AC adapter. My MacBook is almost new, I have it for only few months, connector looks clean.
I never had problems with AC adapter but I will try different wall outlet.
It's a shame that I have no other device with display port output so I can not test if the problem is with my display. With dual DVI connected to my desktop computer display works fine... for more than one year now...

  • Diamond shape momentarily displayed when waking from sleep

    Hi
A couple of days ago when I woke my MBP from sleep I was a bit surprised to see a large diamond shape (it may have been a cube rotated through 90 degrees but it was only visible for about a second so I didn't get a great chance to look at it) appear in the middle of the screen before my desktop was displayed. This isn't something I've seen before and it hasn't done it again since. It looked like it was a silvery, grey sort of colour.
Does anyone know what this should be and, if so, is it anything to be concerned about?
    Many thanks.

  • Display anomaly when waking from sleep

Ever since the SL Upgrade when my MacBook Pro wakes from sleep the very bottom right one third section of my screen does not look as it should, this thin strip of incorrect graphics ( usually mostly white ) only appears for about one second then the desktop goes back to normal down there . . . so far this is not a problem at all, just an anomaly . . . I bought my MBP early summer 2008 and never had a single problem before and after SL, just this oddity now . . . I have a ViewSonic VP2250WB LCD display mirrored via DVI . . . so I am curious if anyone else has this happening and possible reasons for it . . .

Matteo : I guess it is a good sign that only 2 of us have reported this minor glitch here . . . I may experiment with switching to a different desktop pattern and / or screen saver to see if it persists . . . also, since installing SL I have only done Sleep and of course restarts after getting the 10.6.1 update and a few others so I need to do an actual Shut Down and later start up fresh and see what happens.

  • Display artifacts when waking from sleep...

My G5 runs 24/7, and the display goes to sleep every night when i'm not using it.
Lately when i wake my computer from sleep in the morning, i get artifacts all over the screen on various graphics... the artifacts are typically a bright teal color and they are about 1 pixel tall x 5 pixels in length.
I know artifact like this usually appear when the Video Card is overheating, which is odd because the card isn't and has never been overclocked...
I did just recently upgrade to the Apple 30" display from the Apple 23" display, i'm wondering if this has anything to do with it?
i've got the NVIDIA GeForce 6600

I would reseat the video card, clean any dust from the inside of the computer and then run the Apple Hardware Test. Post back and let us know what you find.

  • Display is Grey When Waking from Sleep Mode

Anyone see this symptom. When we open the lid and the system wakes up, the display has a grey-ish overtone on the lower portion. It progresses and then brightens to normal operation. Is this the beginning of a display going to die? Thanks in advance...

If the MBP doesn't wake when you open the lid but does when you press any key afterward, do this:
    Applications > Utilities > Terminal
Copy and paste the following text in the Terminal window:
    *sudo pmset lidwake 1*
You'll be asked for your admin password. Type that in (Note: the password will not be displayed as you do so). Press Return, and quit the Terminal. Close the MBP, wait for it to sleep, and open it again. Does it wake now?
If you want to change it back so the system doesn't wake when you open the lid, repeat the procedure, but this time type or paste:
    *sudo pmset lidwake 0*

  • Is it normal for screen to go blank for a sec. when waking from sleep?

When I leave my MacBook sleep for a while, then wake it up, the screen will display, then go blank for a sec., then display again.
Is this normal? I don't believe it is the flicker, as my screen is solid at other times.

Not sure if it's exactly "normal" but I've notice mine do that once in awhile. I've got a first generation MacBook and it hasn't seemed to have an effect on it yet.
I don't think mine does it all the time (I really don't pay that much attention to it) but I have noticed it.

  • Brand new Mac mini ONLY displays when waking from sleep

    Have an unusual problem.
Brand new 2011 Mac mini.  Turn it on, and I do not get the grey Apple logo screen or normal spinning cog.  Light comes on as normal, and chime chimes as normal.  I've tried three different monitors now and I never get a display, unless I put the mini to sleep with the power button in back, then wake it with a keyboard key stroke, the display turns on and works as normal.
As of 20 Sep 2011, I've got all the software and EFI updates installed.  I've also reset the PMU, SMC, PRAM, and NVRAM to no avail.
    Thanks.

Yes, sure did.  Tried different cables and Thunderbolt to video adapters.  Don't know if it makes a difference, but I'm using VGA.  Originally tried it about a week ago with DVI and it worked ok.  The problem is the monitor we're using in our classroom doesn't support DVI or HDMI.

  • IMac Retina 5K Display changes tones when waking from sleep -- Is this normal?

Every single time that I wake my Retina iMac from display or system sleep, the colors on the monitor seem to change tones twice:
First the display goes from dim to slightly brighter (within first 1-3 seconds)
Then the display goes from cooler (blues) to warmer (yellows) (within first 5-10 seconds)
Does this sound normal?  Do you suspect the pixels are just warming up?  I tried calibrating my display, but this doesn't fix it.

Writing it off as "warming up" for the dim to brighter effect seems sensible... but cooler to warmer colors seems odd to me...
Fortunately, you can technically reach the cooler colors of your preference by doing a Display calibration, so it's not like the monitor is incapable of achieving that tone of color.  But would be nice to understand why it changes tones in the first place.  Perhaps it's doing a quick refresh to achieve an ideal color temperature?
Worst case scenario, Apple is very flexible with returns (when I bought my Retina MacBook that I felt had a hardware issue, they immediately replaced it without question) so worst case scenario you could always ask for a replacement given it's such a new / recently purchased machine.  I considered doing this, but am concerned it might be an issue with all the the Retina iMac machines... would hate to have to swap & setup the computer all over again.
