Welcome to the HP Support forums!
I am happy to assist you with your hard drive/cd/dvd issue. However I have a few questions.
What operating system are you currently using?
Is the Windows Version on My Computer 32-bit or 64-bit?
Have you made and changes recently to your notebook? New drivers or devices, or a BIOS change?
What exact errors are you seeing when you start your computer?
Here are some pages I found that should cover the mostly likely causes of the problem. It would be best to have your original hard drive in the system for now. Otherwise part of the problem with the new one would be more related to not having a bootable partition or operating system installed. If we can access your original drive, then if we can sort out the cause without having to format, or repartition your drive, then any data on the drive should still be there.
"Non-System Disk Error" or "Disk Error" Appears on Black Screen (Windows 7 and Vista)
Resolve Boot Device not Found Error Message
CD/DVD Drive Is Not Detected (Windows 7)
Let me know what results you get or if you are getting any specific errors.

Pavillion dv6-3216us win7 clone hard drive worked only with HDClone 4.1

Pavillion dv6-3216us win7 64bit clone hard drive worked only with HDClone 4.1 tried many others that seemed to work but not boot.
cloned to WD 750 GB took about 2.5 hours

The originals were over 3 yrs old low end consumer models and 'due' for retirement to less frequent backup duties.
The Black or Blue Caviar 640GB costs slightly more but also 10-15% faster.
I wouldn't worry about temps, but I would monitor them, and if necessary boost the fans 200-300 rpm to help out.
Make sure everything is SL versions now (DW 4.2).
Normally I zero a drive and reformat more than others, and definitely with new OS.

T400 keeps on reading hard drive in regular intervals (no programs running)

I have been using my T400 for some time now and what is annoying me is the sound of hard drive even ehen I am just reading word or a webpage or not even doing anything (no programs running).
I had an HP laptop before and it would not touch hard drive under mentioned conditions...
But my T400 keeps on touching the hard drive in relatively regular wai - on/off, on/off - each second - this is driving me crazy...
I hope I described it correctly ;-) - hope you understand.
Any suggestions how to solve it or I have to get used?

Macbook pro not reading hard drive blinking question mark

Just got a new replacement MacBook Pro. Did a restore from timemachine and the Apple updates. Opened a finder and could not find the internal hard drive. (nothing else connectd to the laptop) attempted to open the applications folder and got stuck with a spinning wheel. Re=started 5 minutes later and nothing happened.
Did a OPTION Key restart, connected to the network and did a disk util. No internal drive displayed.
The old laptop's HD died 4 times. Now this new one dies right out fo the box? Back to the Apple store tomrrow morning.
Any suggestions?

Got to the Finder? From the Finder menu: Finder>Preferences. Hard Disk box checked?

IMac not reading hard drive, spotlight not working, all my files not showing... help!!!

I got home from a three week trip and turned on my imac, at first i realized it was running extremely slow. Then i plugged in my external hard drive, and it didn't read. I checked in disk utilities and profiler, and my hard drive was there, just not appearing in finder or desktop. I couldn't mount (it was grey) the hard drive in disk utilities either. (I tried with other hard drives, same problem; they all worked before)
Afterwards, I found out that spotlight wasn't working at all, it wasen't even initializing (see attached screenshot). When i opened "all my files", nothing appeared in the window - it was blank. Another thing is, launchpad scares me - it loads incredibly slow and the screen keeps refreshing itself.
Please help!! I don't want to reinstall the whole system and lose all my file, cause right now, I cannot backup anything since it won't read my hard drives!! Could this be some kind of apple-virus..
Anyone else with a similar situation? My system is 10.7.5, processor: i3

This is not related to any kind of malware.
It sounds like something is going very wrong with your machine, but I'm unsure what that might be that would prevent all external hard drives from working. Are you able to start up in recovery mode (hold down command-R at startup)? If so, from recovery mode, open Disk Utility and select your internal hard drive. What does the SMART Status say?

Read hard drive formatted in 10.8 in 10.6 (or Win7)?

I have recently downgraded my Macbook Pro from Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard. I'm very happy with the change, my only issue is with external hard drive. It's formatted in the new format and 10.6 cannot read.
Is there any way to read Mountain Lion formatted hard drive either in 10.6 or under PC with Win 7 (I'm willing to pay for some 3rd party app if price is reasonable)? I have like 100 GB of data on that drive I want to copy, but I'm not looking forward to doing it the hard way (reinstall Lion, copy data elsewhere, downgrade again....).

The question really is one about which format the disk is actually using. That might provide a clue.
Open /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and select the drive. The info pane at the bottom should indicate the drive format. It's been a while, but the only differences I can think of beetween 10.6 and 10.7 are ExFAT support (added in 10.6.5) and encrypted volumes.
Either that, or just find a friend (or local Apple Store Genius) who has a 10.7 system you can attach the drive to temporarily.

Hi all im a new programmer and i wanted to make a computer compression program, i think i can get up to a constant 50% compression. I was wondering as to whether java had syntax for reading raw hexadecimal from the hard drive. If you do know the code could you post it and be very explicit as to what things do.

Do you mean low-level access to blocks, sectors,etc?
If so, you're probably out of luck.
Or did you just mean reading "raw" bytes from files?

The file system is a service or layer provided by the OS for programs to use. Almost all programs, whether written in Java, C/C++, C#, Perl, shell script, Python, etc. do I/O through the file system, letting the OS worry about the lower level stuff. Programs like Norton Disk Doctor, or some databases, etc. might use the lower level stuff either out of necessity to perform their task, or for performance reasons.
For the lower level access, you'd have to go through JNI, or find some third-party tool that does.

G4 Tower not reading Hard Drives

Hello,
I'm running a G4 tower w/ dvd-rom/cd-rw,ZIP,20G HD, and a 40GHD. They are all hooked up to the Internal ATA connectors (HD's on one, CD/ZIP on other).
Yesterday I had to unhook them, now I can't seem to get either of the hard drives to show up.
I can start up from the OS X DVD, but disk utility shows only the DVD/CD drive. I didn't even bother hooking up ZIP drive yet. I have tried switching cables, switching master/slave/cable select on drives, but no matter what combo only the DVD/CD will show up, never either hard drive. I have also zapped pram and nvram.
I remember my G4 being picky about IDE combos and jumpers, but never this picky.
Any hints? suggestions? Is there 1 specific way i should have all this set up?
please help!!!!

Update:
I just noticed that some how along the way, I seem to have broken a PIN of the the back off both hard drives. They are both missing 1 pin each (not including the one that is missing by default) it's the pins that the IDE cord plugs directly into. I assume that these missing pins are at the root of my HD troubles.
So where do I go from now? I could just buy a new HD, but I really need the information on these two drives. One is a Maxtor, and the other is a Quantom Fireball. Is there anyone way to save the data on the drives? Can i get a new connector on back?
Any tips or links would be helpful.

Question Mark / not reading hard drives

I have a flashing question mark /apple icon on the attempts to startup my G4 . Not reading the drives . I have used the startup disk & checed the profile & it reads the drives in the extensions, however not on startup

Not Working Hard Drive

I bought Hp Pavillion 110-014 ( Nov/2013, Office Depot).
Not working Hard drive.
computer is not reading hard drive,
When I Turn On it, It is preffering Fix Computer......and then after 20 minute, Monitor is Blank
I try Hard Drive Connect another Computer(HP 500-056) but Not working,
how can i Fix It?

I suggest running the hard drive diagnostics from the BIOS. This will tell you if the hard drive has failed.

HP Pavillion DV7 Hard Drive failure and replacement

Hi all,
As the title mentions, I have an HP Pavillion DV7, p/n: NB406AV. The SMART is showing an imminent hard drive failure. The primary hard disk quick test stops at 4% and shows a code "303" for hard disk 1. It also stops at 4% when doing a full HD scan.
So, I'll be replacing the HD. I have no idea what to buy, and I plan on buying a non HP HD. Can anyone tell me the specs I should look for? I'd like to get the biggest GB HD that will be compatible as well. Thanks for your help!

It usesSATA HDD. Some dv7 models use SATA II but many later models use SATA III. SATA III is backwrd compatible but more expensive. DV7 is a series of hundreds different models and you won't go wrong with SATA III drive. It can accept current generation HDD's. The following HHD is a good choice with a good price/performance ratio per Gb:

You can use 1Tb on your machine. New HDD's are thinner but the screws will be lined up and should be strong enough to hold the HDD in place.

After I upgraded to Yosemite iphoto can't recognize my backup CDs which were created in iLife09. Ihave the original applications install disk and my old hard drive(I upgraded to SSD). How do I get a n iphoto back to read by old CDs?

After I upgraded to Yosemite,iPhoto can't recognize my backup CDs created in iLife 09. The applications install disk won't install iphoto because iphoto 9.5 is already installed..I updated to a SSD and have the original Hard Drive with an updated iphoto which recognized the older CDs(thanks to iphoto expander). I thought that the iphoto that transferred with the new hard drive was the same as what was on the old one. I guess it wasn't. I really need to access my backups. HELP

Later version of iPhoto write to the library on opening, and so cannot open libraries on optical media, as that cannot be written to. Further, optical media is going e way of the floppy disk. Therefore, you need to use a different form of archiving and back up going forward.
To allow iPhoto to open these libraries you need to copy them to your Mac or an attached external disk.
To merge them into an existing Library will require that you use either Aperture (if you have it) or iPhoto Library Manager.

Recently my keyboard on my macbook pro died. i backed up the machine to my Seagate 500GB hard drive, successfully, and sent the notebook in for repairs. Now that the macbook is repaired, i can read from the seagate, but not write to it. It says read only.

Recently my Macbook Pro's keyboard failed. Using my wireless keyboard, i managed to backup everything to my 500gb Seagate external hard drive. I sent the machine in, had the keyboard repaired, and now the machine is back, and i am loading my content back onto the macbook. My problem is that the drive is now read only, and i have searched for all the obvious fixes. The lock on the permissions secion of the info block on the drive. (not present). I have even tried disk utility, but all the options are greyed out.
I am a graphic designer, and so i use my external drive extensively to move artwork around, so it is important that i can make it writable. It worked perfectly on this very same machine, two weeks ago, and nothing has changed on the drive, so i can only assume it is a software issue on the operating system.
I have read through all the forums, etc, and can find nothing that works. I am loath to change anything on the drive, as it was working perfectly on this system before the system went in for its repair.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your drive is formatted with the NTFS file system. OS X can read but not write to the NTFS file system. There are third party drivers available that claim to add the ability to OS X to write to an NTFS partition. I have not tried them and don't know if they work.
The only file system that OS X and Windows can both write to natively is the FAT32 file system.
