I don't know which file? All I know is I can choose X-Fi in BF2 sound options with v4.5 but not with v4.55.
I think it may have something to do with the mode switch?
Within BF2 sound options you can only select X-Fi if you are in 'Game' mode.
Selecting Game mode with v4.5 works but not with v4.55.
Using PAX PCI XFI PAX Audio Suite DVD 20 V.05 also.

• How full can I let a 256GB PCIe SSD get?

Hi all,
How full can an SSD get before it becomes a problem/degrades performance or causes excessive wear (or will Apple's wear leveling take care of the excessive wear potential)?
I'm looking at a 2014 2.6HGz model with 16GB of RAM and the 256GB PCIe SSD (I don't think I want the Fusion Drive), but I suspect it's too new for anyone to answer that question about that specific machine, so I'll ask it in the MBP and/or MBA forum if I don't get an answer here.
Don't know if it would be any different with a 2.5" form factor SSD, but if anyone has any info on that, that would be helpful too.
I've tried googling and haven't found an answer yet, so here I am.
I'd be running 10.10 with FileVault 2 turned on and using TimeMachine via external HDD. I have about 120GB used on my current HDD so that's about what I'd have on the new one. At this point in time, I'm sure that free space is not an issue, but I wonder if it could be as the SSD gets more and more full.
Any help is appreciated!

I've had many SSD's, starting out with the Intel X25M-G2 80Gb. Often there are recommendations of 7% over provisioning and I regard that as a minimum.
I've been doing a LOT of reading on this since my OP. It sounds like some manufacturers hide the 7% so it's safely stashed away so users cannot get rid of it, while others don't, but it's a recommendation as you've stated.
Due to the work I was doing I used 20% which leads to a speed increase and to a longer life expectancy. At one stage I had even allocated more but it was overkill. For "normal" usage I would be somewhere between these two extremes.
I like to be safe, so I like the 20% idea.
I've just ordered the 2.8 Ghz model with the 256 SSD, for me it is the model that has the "sweet spot" and I'll be wanting to have at least 15% free space.
Does that leave you room for expansion for the length of time you expect to keep the mini? Or are you using an external drive to store data on?
Wonder if you've looked at my other thread asking about the 2012 quad vs the 2014 dual i5? I think I'm leaning toward the 2014, and was thinking about the 2.6, but then saw that an upgrade to the 3.0 was also an upgrade to an i7, granted for $200 more. And I think I'd like the 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM to make sure for the future (this $699 mini is getting awfully expensive!).
This free space can be unallocated (as in "not partitioned") or a part of a partition that is not filled up completely.
It's getting late and I'm going cross-eyed from reading so much, so perhaps that's the reason, but I'm not following you here. Would you mind explaining a bit more or a different way?

• XP x64, all surround speaker signals going to front speakers

Wanted to document an issue I found while trying to use my audigy 4 card with XP x64. Yes, I know you are probably looking at my spec at the bottom and asking why use XP x64. Or why after spending so much money on the pc, could you not afford a better sound card? Or why not use the on-board audio?
Well I am awaiting to upgrade the sound card until a few more HDMI enabled cards come to the marked this year. Also I wanted to play some older games that support eax (which my on-board audio does not support fully) and did not want to go through setting up the emulation stuff in Vista.
Anyway after getting the OS setup, I started looking at the sound setup and discovered that all but the two front speakers are not working. If set to 7. in audio console and windows audio panel then the signals to the side and rear speakers either don't work or come out of the front two speakers.
Odd I thought since vista, I am using on my another hard disk (I just select which HDD I want to boot from at boot), using the same driver version, the sound works perfectly (so not a hardware or cabling issue).
I tried drivers:
SBAX_PCDRV_LB_2_8_000.exe
SBAX_WBUP2_LB_2_09_006.exe
SBAX_PCDRVBETA_US_2_8_000.exe
In that order. All gave the same results. Did the normal things like driver cleaning etc.
Then just for a laugh after hearing about old resolved issues with the drivers on systems with more than 4 Gb's of Ram, I removed some of my memory. And low and behold when only one? of the 3 channels of 2 Gb of memory is installed then it all works, full surround is back. But with 2 channels for a total of 4 Gb or 3 channels for a total of 6Gb of ram, I get this problem of only getting sound from the front two speakers.
When I get the time I will try installing XP x32 to see if it not being able to all of my memory will help. Will post if it makes any difference.

@Re: XP x64, all surround speaker signals going to front speakers& Same hell to me with my old Audigy 2 Value. Rear was redirected to front, and center was upmixed with front, all in 5. nati've mode. Stereo surround worked well although. In my old mobo, Asrock Dual Sata 2 had an option to disable the 4Gb ram detection. Although I had 3Gb, with this option disabled I only accessed 2,8 Gb, no big deal. I survi'ved. But with my new Asus M3A32-MVP there was no option to disable 4Gb detection, and for that, the issue is always present in XP x64.
It's driver compatibility with XP x64. That's all. Audigy driver can't handle it in XP x64. In Vista/7 is fixed, but not in Windows XP x64 Edition. I tried the same steps that you did, with the same results. XP 32 bit worked well, because it also didn't recognize the full RAM.
The funny thing is I contacted CL tech support and they said all worked well for them. Furthermore EAX effects doesn't wok either (check F.E.A.R. for example).
Sorry, CL tech support HAS TO fix this. I don't know why they have forgotten XP x64 users.

• Masters and previews all mixed up

Recently the wife has started organizing our large (over 73 gigs) iPhoto library and complained that many of the photos were displaying as small: thumbnail sized. Investigating, I opened the iPhoto Library and found that the contents of the Masters and Previews were quite jumbled. Using Spotlight I quickly discovered that for any given file there were at least 2 versions of each image, a full size (say 1.2MB or so) and a preview (60KB or so) but my Masters directory contains hundreds if not thousands of the little previews and there are lots of the full size images in Previews.
It also seems that, among the confused images, all the full size images have the uppercase "JPG" extension and the previews are lowercase.
I have tried repairing twice to no avail. I haven't rebuilt because I suspect it would compound the problem by making previews of my misplaced previews etc etc. I could easily use the Finder to search/sort by file type and size, save all the originals and start a new library, but I don't want to lose all the metadata, retouching, and so on. I suspect the problem started when migrating to new Macs from our old G5 and iPhoto 6. What's the best way out of this mess?

Sounds like when you migrated you imported your old library into iPhtoo on your new system
NEVER import an iPhoto library into iPhoto - it does not wrok and creates a massinve mess
The only real solution is to go back and do it correctly - drag the bad library to the desktop and then Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

• OSX 10.8 Multiple Ext Drive backups?

Hello,
So I admittedly am getting to this way too late.
I've got a Mac Pro with 4 internal drives. The OSX drive is a 240GB SSD and the other 3 bays are SATA 2TB drives for data storage. They're all pretty full at this point. Go ahead and sling insults about what an idiot I am for not having properly backed all this up yet. To be honest, I do have some of the data strewn across several drives laying around here somewhere, but I need a clean, current update with management software to continually update the modified/new files as needed.
OK, so logically I figured I'd need 8TB to cover everything with a bit extra room.
So I just bought 2 of the Seagate 4TB  Backup Plus USB drives. Connected them and formatted them using Mac OS Extended Journal via Disk Utility. Check.
Opened up Time Machine and selected both drives to be used as backup destinations. What I didn't realize is that it looks at both drives as two separate, mirror-image duplicate copies of the same backup.
My total backup across all my internal drives right now is around 6.5TB of data, and it's saying it's too large (obviously because it won't span the entire backup across both drives, and therfore is limiting the storage to one 4TB backup per drive).
Is there a way around this, where I could have one backup configured for one drive and a different one for the second, or perhaps another backup utility program that will treat the two 4TB drives as one large space, without RAIDing them together (which as I recall would reduce the available space to around 6TB).
Thanks.

Alcologic wrote:

No.  Time Machine can have multiple destinations, effective with Mountain Lion, but only one set of rules about what to back up.
It can back up to a hardware concatenated RAID set or JBOD (a single volume spanning both disks), but it's not recommended, and probably not your best solution anyway.
or perhaps another backup utility program that will treat the two 4TB drives as one large space, without RAIDing them together (which as I recall would reduce the available space to around 6TB).
The common "cloning" apps will only back up one volume at a time, to a separate volume.  But unlike TM, you can set up multiple "tasks" to do them.
Your best bet may depend on how you use your Mac.  For example:
Assuming OSX is on the SSD, and your home folders are on a single HD, your best bet may be to back those two up with Time Machine.  That will get quick incremental backups of the things that are likely to change often, including easily-found earlier versions of things that have been changed or deleted, without the overhead of running a "cloning" app frequently on an OSX drive.  Note that, because of those earlier versions, those backups will take up more space than the originals.   The 4 TB should be enough.
Then back up the other two drives to separate partitions on the other 4 TB drive, with a different app (see the green box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #27 for some suggestions), and perhaps different schedule (hourly may be overkill).  If you use CarbonCopyCloner, you'll have the option of keeping "archive'" copies of changed or deleted items, although they're harder to find than with TM.

• Buying a 2,5" external FW400 drive only for Photoshop CS2 as Scratchdisc?

i am a retouching professional
and use a pb 15" and a ACD20".
do you think it makes sense to buy a
2,5" external FW400 drive only for Photoshop as Scratchdisc?
2,5" therefore, as it needs no powersupply
by wire. that elegant i guess,
my images have 1,5GB on the disc, and use often 4GB RAM in Photoshop CS2 but i only have 2GB RAM in my pb 15" 1,67 from late 2005.
its very slow sometimes as Photoshop (PS) scratches onto my external drives which are all nearly full of stuff and heavyly fragmented.
so , i had that idea of buying a drive only for PS, which is always "empty" and PS can use it for scratching large data onto the disc. i would format it everyday in order to prevent fragmenting (?) and be able to work fast,
thats my goal, just to work faster. its really slow sometimes as i suffer from too less RAM. of course i am buying a G5 quad later with plenty of RAM but for now i have to work with my pb .... and need a better working solution
anyone thinks it makes sense?
if yes, how big should the disc be, 20GB , 40Gb, or more?
if the file in PS has 4 GB RAM, and has 30 layers or more, how can i find out how many GB space it needs on the scratch disc?
i would like to buy this one:
http://www.sarotech.com/english/cgi/pd.cgi?cmd=view&rno=8
Cutie EX

if 40GB would be enough i could save more money, but if you say i need 80, its also ok. which model/brand of disc would you put in? i am looking for a quiet one, 7200rpm and at least 40 or better 80GB. but quiet would be important.

thanks for your help.
i had another idea now: i copied my stuff from my internal pb to my external FW 400 disc. now i have 40GB free space in my internal.
- is this enough for photoshop scratch disc?
- should i also define the other 3 discs (external) as Photoshop scratch disc (possible in the prefercenes of Photoshop, up to 4 discs can be used as scratch discs)
- what about the system scratch disc, do both interfere themselves or bother?
- better also copy the image i work with in Photoshop to the internal powerbook drive which has only 5400 rpm or better leave it where it is now on the external FW400 drive 7200rpm?
thanks

• PB Hard Drive - whats on it from new

hi bought a 15" powerbook recently and after downloading all the most recent updates automaticaly
i noticed i have 61GB availible of my 80GB HD
is this normal?
i havent started filling up my itunes or iphoto yet...
regards
gareth

You will see there is likely some demo programs + something like quickbooks for tax etc. that has been installed plus the complete language packs etc. and all the printer drivers that can take up to 300mb per driver " HP " etc , as is X11 and developer tools.
Mostly you only will need OSX + maybe bsd subsystem ??? 1 printer driver and optional apps like quickbooks but that you can install once the system is up and running by inserting the install dvd again "Optional Install"
This should then only use 2-4gb max but all 80gb hd's is in reallity only +/-76gb effective as some clown could not count in 1968 and so bits + bytes or internet 3mb/s=300kbps +/- or 80gb=75gb disc size / formated size. ???
There should be a way to get rid of all the stuff you don't need but I have not seen or looked for that solution.
I reinstall the OS or Tiger and then select only the needed stuff + english + 1 printer or no printer as likely the printer drivers is all and full of bugs.
Easier just to download new printer drivers.
Carefull OSX + more than 1 partition on the same disc is not always happy or gets confused ???
Hope this helps.

• Do I have PCI ports?

Hi I just picked up a USB 2.0 PCI Port for my Power Mac G4 Duel 867MHz processor Machine. I opened it up and tried to install it but noticed the ports seem to be different then what the USB 2.0 port has which is PCI. Basically if I don't have PCI what do I have and am I still able to install USB 2.0 in this machine?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Just a tiny bit stumped.
Frank

Here is another picture, a drawing of the logic board with labelling -
http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/9686/qsdalogicbd8aa.jpg
I seem to recall that not all PCI cards may be full-length, probably a function of which connectors in the port they actually need to use (not all cards may need to use all the connectors). The cards are keyed, however, and should fit only one way no matter their length.
Since the rear flange/plate on the card, where its USB ports are, should end up flush with the opening on the back of the computer, that should give you the exact position for the card relative to the slot.
Don't forget to remove the blank-off plate covering the opening associated with that PCI slot position.

• IPhoto folders are all messed up and my pics arent showing up correctly..

I tampered with the iPhoto folders...I renamed files and moved things around thinking I was organizing things.. but now my photos in iPhoto arent working correctly. Some photos show a thumbnail but dont open.. and all I get is a gray screen with an exclamation mark. Other photos open but at very poor quality.. around 32KB instead of the 1.6 MB that they should be!
What can I do to fix this problem?
Also, my computer seems to have 5 copies of all my photos. One copy that is the original... another that is smaller and then more random copies. How can I get rid of those copies.. I've got like 2,000 of them! Ahhh..
Somebody please help! Any suggestions??

Hi Diana,
#1 Two Apple kbs for you to read
Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto library folder
About the iPhoto Library folder
#2 It seems you moved photos around and some thumbnail photos from the Data folder were put in the originals folder (photos open at 32k) and the ones missing (renamed by you). This is how it is supposed to be in the Finder;
iPhoto 6 Library folder in the Finder
As you can see the structure is now related to rolls. Rolls are created for each folder you import and each import session from a camera.
It is very easy to change the names of film rolls within iPhoto to make them easier to find images within. Open the info panel in iPhoto by clicking on the "i" icon. Once it is opened, click on the roll title in the viewing window.
Click on the word "title" in the info pane and type in your new title. I like to use a date and text format such as 12/25/05 Christmas at Mom's, 1/05/06 my birthday, etc. Once the roll names are changed within iPhoto, they are also changed within the Finder, making it easy to locate an image.
When importing from a camera, make sure you name the roll with a date and text before the import.
There is no way to recover from this except to start over with just the original files. This would entail creating a new library, going through the old library and finding all the full sized images and deleting the thumbnail images
#3 Here are the instructions for creating a new library. BUT remember that in your case it is not as simple as importing the Originals folder again as you moved photos around and in and out of the wrong folders. You are going to have to find all the originals and delete the smaller thumbnails of the same name (unless the originals were overwritten by the thumbnails when you moved photos around because an image has the same name in all the folders (Data, Original and Modified).
close iPhoto
-drag the iPhoto Library folder to the desktop
-launch iPhoto and create a new library
-double click the iPhoto Library folder on the desktop to open it
-the two main folders you will need to import are the Original folder and the Modified folder (only if you want to import the edited images).
-the Originals folder has all your originals photos unedited. the Modified folder has all images that you have edited, rotated, cropped, etc.
-Drag these two folders to the desktop
-If you want to save the edited image, find it in the roll in the Modified folder and drag it into the roll of the same name in the Originals folder. It will replace the originals and now will be the original.
-If you don't care to save any edited images, then don't import the Modified folder into iPhoto or don't bother replacing the edited image with the original image like I just described.
-If you import the Originals folder into iPhoto you will have all your originals in their named rolls.
-If you import the Originals and Modified folders into iPhoto, you will have all of the being in the originals folder in the finder. The roll with the same name as the other will have a _1 appended to it's name (in the finder)
-the roll from the originals will be next to the same roll from the Modified folder within iPhoto. You can then delete any of the images from there if you want.
I know this might sound confusing but it really isn't.
Get back if any of this sounds like something you might want to do.

• Should I delete my old iPhoto Library Current folder once everything is transferred to Photos Library Current?    Does this mean that all my new photos on any device can come off my Mac and ONLY be in the Photos Library which is in the cloud?

I have 2 questions about the new Photos app for Mac (I'm running 10.10.3 on my MacBook Air 1.8GHz Intel Core i5 mid 2012)):
1.Should I delete my old iPhoto Library Current folder once everything is transferred to Photos Library Current?
2. Does this mean that all my new photos on any device can come off my Mac and ONLY be in the Photos Library which is in the cloud?  That would free 59GB off my Mac and that would be very good.

1.Should I delete my old iPhoto Library Current folder once everything is transferred to Photos Library Current?
You can, but I would wait, until you have have been working with Photos for some time and are sure, that everything migrated well. There may be hidden flaws in your library and teething problems with Photos. Don't be in a hurry to abandon iPhoto completely. You may need to go back, until bugs have been fixed.  Th Photos Library does not duplicate the photos in your iPhoto Library. the media files are shared and do not need extra space: See:  Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support
2. Does this mean that all my new photos on any device can come off my Mac and ONLY be in the Photos Library which is in the cloud?  That would free 59GB off my Mac and that would be very good.
If you have enough iCloud storage.  But Photos will still need space for local thumbnails on all devices.
See:  Apple - OS X - Photos Preview
Fill your library, not your device.
iCloud Photo Library can help you make the most of the space on your Mac. When you choose “Optimize Mac Storage,” all your full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud in their original formats, with storage-saving versions kept on your Mac as space is needed. You can also optimize storage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, so you can access more photos and videos than ever before. You get 5GB of free storage in iCloud — and as your library grows, you have the option to choose a plan for up to 1TB.

• Shutting down one tunnel shuts them all down

I have several remotes sites connected to "home" with Cisco 891 routers at each remote site.
"Home" actually consites of two different data center sites, each with a Cisco 3845 router terminating the IPSec tunnels there. One home site provides VOIP phone service, the 2nd home site provides PC Data.
Each 891 router has two IPSec over GRE tunnels configured, one tunnel goes to the VOIP home site's 3845 router, the 2nd tunnel goes to the DATA home site's 3945 router.
All of my pre-existing 891 routers are still running IOS 12.4(22)YB5, and are working fine.
My newest 891 router, purchased recently for a new remote site, shipped with IOS ver 15.0(1)M4, and when I have both tunnels configured similarly to the others, both tunnels come up and everything seems to work fine, but if I disable the VOIP tunnel with the "shutdown" command on the tunnel interface for VOIP, then the data tunnel will not come up at all, with full verbose crypto logging turned on, I never even see an attempt to bring the data tunnel up, and when I issue a "no shut" on the VOIP tunnel, both tunnels come right up.
This behavior is not seen on the original 891 routers still running 12.4. I can shutdown the VOIP tunnel and the DATA tunnel will come up, stay up just fine.
I really do not need the VOIP tunnel at this new remote site for the immediate future, but would like to keep the configs in place for the future, and also to keep all my 891s configured identically (different ip numbers of course) for consistancy's sake and easy of management.
Is this a known bug in IOS 15.x that if you issue a shutdown on one tunnel interface, it kills them all?
Do I need to install 12.4 on this 891? I'd rather keep the IOS on it that it shipped with.

I think I've decided just to roll back the IOS to 12.4 instead. That way I'll be truly consistant with IOS and configs across all my 891 remote site routers. 12.4 has been working perfectly well at the other locations. I really don't have time to fool around with debugging IOS problems unless Cisco wants to pay me my hourly consulting rate , I just need a known solution that works right now and 12.4 is it.

If deleting a photo from any device deletes it from the iCloud Photo Library, "library" may not be the right word to describe its function. Surprised nobody else has commented on this. Am I the only one who got this wrong?
Your iCloud Photo Library is in iCloud, and the main purpose is to sync and update it across all your devices. Any change you do, including deleting, will sync across all devices syncing with iCloud Photo Library.
If you want to save space on your mobile devices use the "Optimize Storage" option. Then you will store only optimized thumbnails on your devices and keep the full resolution versions in iCloud.

You can also optimize storage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, so you can access more photos and videos than ever before
