Pay as you go iphone 4s cellular data on or off?

Hi all
My son has an iphone 4s on EE pay as you go and we would like to know whether we should have 'cellular data' turned on or off?
We were told by EE that if cellular data (not sure why it says cellular data, when my iphone 4 says mobile???) is turned on then his 'credit' will go very quickly?!? Which is has done!
If we have cellular data turned off he then cannot receive iMessages or SMS??? unless he uses WIFI which isnt available when hes out and about?
If we turn cellular data on (so that he can receive iMessages and SMS) is there an option for his 'credit' not to be used up on data?
Thanx for any help offered

iMessage requires a data connection, either WiFi or 3G. MMS requires a cellular data connection, & SMS requires a cellular connection, but not cellular data.
FYI: An iPhone is designed to always have a data connection, either WiFi or 3G. Trying to manage an iPhone, without a data connection, is kinda like trying to force a square peg in a round hole. Possible? perhaps, but not done easily or effectively.

is it possible to change imei number?
i've tried for so many times n still the phone is offline so i've set it to offline mode with my message but it never shows the last location why?

If the device is found, nobody can use it without knowing your Apple ID and password.
The phone will only show it's location if it is connected to cellular network or Wi-Fi. If those options are switched off, you can't locate the phone.
With iOS 7, Find My iPhone includes a new feature called Activation Lock, which is designed to prevent anyone else from using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch if you ever lose it. It starts working the moment you turn on Find My iPhone in iOS 7. With Activation Lock, your Apple ID and password will be required before anyone can:
Turn off Find My iPhone on your device
    Erase your device
    Reactivate and use your device
This can help you keep your device secure, even if it is in the wrong hands, and can improve your chances of recovering it. Even if you erase your device remotely, Activation Lock can continue to deter anyone from reactivating your device without your permission. All you need to do is keep Find My iPhone turned on, andremember your Apple ID and password.
What steps should I take if I misplace my device?
If you ever misplace your device—whether it’s just lost or you think it may have been stolen—you should put it into Lost Mode immediately using Find My iPhone.
Lost Mode locks your screen with a four-digit passcode and lets you display a custom message with your phone number to help you get it back. You can also remotely erase your device if needed, and your custom message will continue to display even after the device is erased.
While Activation Lock works in the background to make it more difficult for someone to use or sell your missing device, Lost Mode clearly indicates to anyone who finds your device that it still belongs to you and can’t be reactivated without your password.
To put a device into Lost Mode, sign in to icloud.com/find from a Mac or PC or use the Find My iPhone iOS app.
For more information, read what to do if your device is lost or stolen.

  • Pay as you go iphone

I purchased a pay as you go iphone GS from the Apple store in London recently. I do not have a contract although O2 is the network. I am planning to go to US next month. May I purchase a AT&T card and use this to avoid high roaming charges.I presume that wifi will work as normal. I have read the links about locked phones but does this just apply to those with a contract?
    David Thomas

Sorry the say this but the Pay As You Go iPhone is still locked to O2. When vodafone & orange start doing the iPhone prehaps we will then start to se factory unlocked phones but until then it can only be used with O2.

  • Is there a quick way to turn Cellular Data on and off?

I just sent this suggestion in to Apple:
I have limited data on my Iphone 4s, well 2gb and I try to use my wifi as much as possible while home especially.  I don't know the technical term for it, but when you swipe up from the bottom of the phone and : wifi, airplane mode, bluetooth, do not disturb comes up to quickly turn those functions on and off wouldn't it make more sense to replace airplane mode with cellular data?  That way we can quickly access and turn cellular data on and off instead of going through the settings, cellular data on/off.  Just thought this would make our lives easier and hope you will consider it on your next update.
Does anyone know if I have the cellular data turned on, but the WIFI is being used first, if that still uses up my Cellular data?  I think I know enough that if the "verizon" is in the upper left corner that the wifi is being used through my router but then if my 3G is displayed than I'm going through my cellular data.  Sorry, I'm new to the Iphone scene so I'm still learning.
    Ok, thanks in advance.

Actually, all the display of Verizon on the phone shows is that you are connected to their network, it does not show that you are on wi-fi, or cellular data. If the wi-fi fan is displayed, then you are on wi-fi. If the phone is displaying 3G then you are using cellular data. If you are connected to wi-fi, the phone defaults to wi-fi and will use that instead of cellular data. However, if the phone is not actively utilizing data and the phone goes into sleep mode, then wi-fi is disconnected. It will connect immediately after being awoken.

  • Settings button (action) is on the left had side of the Cellular Data is Turned Off notification message put up while the OK button is present on the right hand side of the notification

The defualt notification message put up when launching iTunes on iPhone devices show that Cellular Data is Turned Off message is put up with Settings and OK button.
This seems to be inconsistent with the default 'Cancel' and 'Action' buttons in other notification messages from Apple.
Is it fine to consider the OK button first (left) and Settings(right) button next in the Cellular Data is Turned Off error message in the apps so that it is in line with the apple guidelines??
    Please help with this.
    Thanks you so much.

Try the basics from the manual.  Restart, reset, restore.

  • How Do I Stop the "Cellular Data is Turned Off..." Pop-up?

RE:  "Cellular Data is Turned Off for..." pop-up on iOS 8.0.2 (iPhone 5s)
I have set cellular data ON for some apps and OFF for others.  BY CHOICE.  So, I am suffering EVERY DAY with a pop-up telling me my "Cellular Data is Turned Off for..." for all of the applications I turn on where I HAVE PURPOSEFULLY CHOSEN TO TURN OFF THE CELLULAR DATA.
I NEVER want to see this pop-up again.  And, I do not wish to turn on Cellular Data for most of my apps.  BY CHOICE.  Stop popping me!  Somebody please answer this question.  I absolutely hate this pop-up.  I am often in situations without my glasses - and this thing just drives me crazy!  Can't see the right answer....push the wrong side "OK" versus "Settings".  I hate it.  I know what apps I want to have cellular data and which one's I do not!   Stop the pop-up.  Or lose me to another brand of phone.  Period.
Please, person with lots of "levels" - answer this question!  Help me turn the pop-up off.  I am not going to compromise other essential things (like turn off bluetooth or just check "all" for cellular data service and know that it will go away.  I want cellular data service for only a few things AND I never want to see this pop-up again.

  • Is there a way to turn off the message alert "Cellular data is turned off for _____"?

I turned off cellular data for about half of my apps so I don't go over my data limit (Thanks AT&T). Now every time I open these apps a message alert pops up saying "Cellular Data is Turned Off for _____. You can turn on cellular data for this app in Settings" And it gives two buttons, "Settings" and "Ok".
If it were only a few times, I wouldn't care about closing this message. But now that I have to do it like 20-30 times a day, it has become SUPER ANNOYING. Seriously Apple, how do I turn your stupid message off??? I TURNED OFF MY CELLULAR DATA FOR A REASON, please stop reminding me of what I already know.
AND the worst part is, when that message pops up it locks the phone so the home button doesn't work. Pretty lame software feature in my opinion.

There is a fix for this!  I was about to jailbreak my phone to cure this issue, but found the answer on another thread.
Go to settings/notification center.  Select the app in question and turn the slider for "allow notifications" to ON.  Turn off the sliders below for sounds, etc. Now it shows up in the notification center separately  (or seemingly not at all) and not on your screen when you switch to the app.  Good luck!

  • IPhone 5 cellular data services failing

ISSUE/SYMPTOMS:  iPhone 5 ONLY: Cellular Data stops intermittingly, cellular data locks up without warning, Wi-Fi data connection not working on occasion, iCloud contacts, calendar and reminders not updating, Find My Phone not working, mail or Internet not available or server time-outs. No error messages though. All of these are symptoms of no data service. Problems seem to be related to iPhone 5 failing to switch between LTE and 4G or 3G data services on AT&T.
My iPhone 5 32GB AT&T version (iOS 6.0.2) along with my clients and family using iPhone 5 in the state of Oklahoma are having this issue on their AT&T iPhone 5's:  no cellular data connection re-established if at anytime the LTE connection is lost or weak.  As with iPhone's prior to iPhone 5, the iPhone 5 is supposed to drop down to the next tier of data service and re-connect to cellular data service when the higher speed cellular data service is not available.  Apparently this is not working well on the iPhone 5.
What led me to research this LTE issue was that my iPhone was not syncing on iCloud with contacts, calendars and reminders with my other iOS devices.  Other times this issue became apparent was when iMessage quit sending and receiving until I would reboot my iPhone (sometimes it would finally send the message as a “text message”). When I had these problems I also found out I was not getting any cellular data service for Internet browsing, mail, Maps, Find My iPhone, etc.  This would happen without notice. In other words I would not receive any notice or error message that data service had stopped other than the fact I was not receiving any mail, iMessages, or iCloud sync updates. My only resolution was to reset or reboot my iPhone several times a day, and that would resolve it about 70% of the time.
I have talked to Apple Support on 2-3 occasions in the last week and AT&T Support twice in the last 2 days.  If it is really true, only the AT&T Technical Support Advisor informed me of a nationwide issue relating to iPhone 5 and LTE:  iPhone 5's are not re-connecting to 4G or 3G cellular data service once the LTE data connection is lost or dropped... the voice calls continue to work, but cellular data service fails and stays locked up without an error message until the customer reboots the iPhone.
Obviously this is very unacceptable. We depend on these data services and at minimum need to know when it stops working instead of finding out from a phone call that someone sent us an important email or something.
The AT&T representative also said that both AT&T and Apple are aware of and are working on the issue as it is a nationwide problem with iPhone 5 and LTE. The Apple Support Advisors I talked to made no mention of this "known" issue. AT&T said that it is partly AT&T responsibility because the capacity of LTE is overloaded and cellular data connections are dropping because of the lack of coverage and/or capacity. They actually refunded my data service for a whole month in apology for the inconvenience (I did not even ask for that--I just want my data service to work).  But they also said that Apple has responsibility in this issue because the iPhone 5 should drop down and re-connect to the next lower tier of data service when LTE is not available or lost; instead, it is locking up somehow or it still thinks it is connected to LTE when it is actually not. I don't know how accurate these statements are, but my problem is real.
TEMPORARY WORK-AROUND / FIX FROM AT&T:  Disable LTE on the iPhone 5.  Or when you figure out that data is not coming to your iPhone, use Airplane Mode ON/OFF for a few seconds to force re-connection to a tower without rebooting the iPhone.  You can Disable LTE on the iPhone 5 in SETTINGS/GENERAL/CELLULAR. I have disabled LTE on my iPhone 5 and have not had any of these cellular data issues since.
Disabling LTE is not acceptable either, but it is working. At least I seem not be losing connection or locking up without knowing it.  In my office over the course of a day, my iPhone 5 will jump back and forth on LTE and 4G sitting in the same place.  Disabling LTE has stopped this and the problem, but the iPhone 5 should switch cellular data services seemlessly just like the phone switches towers on a phone voice call seemlessly (most of the time).
WI-FI ALSO STOPS WORKING SOMETIMES AFTER THIS LTE disconnect / lock-up issue:  That has been my experience along with my clients and family as well. If you use Wi-Fi a lot on your iPhone it will hide this LTE issue until you leave your Wi-Fi and get on LTE and then drop LTE (silently) and then go back to your Wi-Fi.  My experience has been I have to reboot the iPhone to even get Wi-Fi working again after that happens.
I do not know if some of these comments and analysis are really accurate or valid or not... all I know for sure is since I upgraded my iPhone to the 5 along with my other family members and clients, we have had "no data" on many occasions and are continually rebooting our iPhones and looking for what is wrong.
My questions to the support community are these:
         1. Is anyone else having this issue? Or is it just me and my few? Maybe a lot of people do not realize they are not getting their data because they are on Wi-Fi most of the time or they are just rebooting and not trying to identify the real problem. AT&T said it was nationwide iPhone 5/LTE issue.  Anyone else heard that from either Apple or AT&T?
         2. Is this an iPhone 5 / Apple issue or is AT&T solely responsible? Or is it both? Where do we get a solution??? Is AT&T LTE holding false connections with iPhone 5 or is the iPhone 5 failing to recognize a dropped LTE cellular data connection and then failing to attempt to re-connect with 4G or 3G?
         3. Did I miss where this issue is posted? I searched Apple Support and Communities and did not get any hits.  Any updates or further insight on the issue? Any other fixes other than Disabling LTE?
          4. If this is in fact a real issue belonging in part to the iPhone 5, we need to escalate Apple’s attention to it.
Thanks in advance for your help and feedback.

Thank you fellow users and experts for your feedback and updates. Sorry about the large font on the original post... accidental via cut and paste.
I have escalated the issue with both Apple and AT&T.  I actually got senior level troubleshooters from both Apple and AT&T on the phone at the same time... rare moment. Here are the key points of the update:
         1. AT&T did NOT confirm the earlier statement by another AT&T Technical Support Agent that this was an emerging nationwide issue about iPhone 5 and LTE losing data connection and not reconnecting at a lower level or re-connecting to LTE once the signal came back. So that earlier statement was not accurate as suspected by all of us. The senior tech at AT&T said he has seen this issue sporadically over the last month or so, but only with about 3-4 customers.  He said it seems to be location or phone dependent (some phones not all phones).
         2. The Apple Tech was satisfied that all that could be done to eliminate my issues possibly relating to my instance of software / iOS had been accomplished except erasing my iPhone and restoring as a new phone (I have avoided this inconvenience with the argument that other family/clients with the iPhone 5 have had the same problem).
         3. AT&T went so far as to examine which towers I had been connecting to over the last week and looked at other technical data that could possibly explain the issue. I now know I have 3 towers that provide LTE within 4 miles of my home/office, one within a half mile.  But so far there is nothing to explain or even properly identify the issue.  AT&T offered me to take my phone to an AT&T store, try to force replicate the problem there, if so, the store would put my SIM card in a brand new iPhone 5 (just to test) and try tor replicate the problem again. If replicated on a new phone, there is a deeper issue; if resolved on a new phone, the answer is obvious. I have not taken the time to do this yet.
         4. On Friday, Jan 4, 2013 while talking and between the tech support calls (on a different phone), I was able to re-create the problem 2 separate times in my home/office by forcing my iPhone to weaken its connection to service (burying it under electronic gear) and then waiting a few minutes, then trying to browse the Internet--no data service unless I manually reset the connection.  I am only able to cause the issue to occur if there is at least 15 min of idle time after a weak signal condition AND only if I don’t completely lose a connection to cellular voice service. It seems that if you go down to NO SERVICE the phone will do new a search and keep searching until reconnects to LTE or other signals correctly, but a weak connection seems to be strong enough for voice service but can sometimes cause the LTE data service to stop without reconnecting to LTE, 4G or 3G unless I manually intervene. It also seems that idle time with a weak connection is also necessary to re-create the problem manually.  Since Friday, I have not been able to re-create the problem. This has been an intermittent problem, so who knows.
FYI, I have never had this problem with my new iPad (also on AT&T LTE) that has been with me when the iPhone fails to have data service, but my iPad is never in my pocket or other places with perhaps less signal.
Again, if you are connected to Wi-Fi on your iPhone 5 most of the time, you may never notice this issue if you are even having it.
So far no progress on the real issue or resolution, but both Apple and AT&T have put forth very admirable effort.
If you or others you know are having this issue, please take the time to post a reply to this issue. Thank you.

  • Iphone 5 cellular data connection problem.

I'm having problem with my cellular data, when it disconnected, it won't reconnect by itself. All I can do is restarting the iphone 5 or reset the network setting. I've tried to change a new SimCard but it seems that didn't work at all. Still having the issue until now. How to fix it? or send it to warranty?. Used this Iphone 5 about 9 months and the problem appear 2 months ago. Need Help!

What did your carrier have to say about it when you reported the problem to them?

  • Why does iphone use cellular data to contact internet when wifi is available?

If I leave Mobile Data (or Cellular Data) enabled on my iphone,
I find that the phone uses my carrier phone service to access the internet about 10 times
per day. The accesses tend to be mostly very small data transfers (say about 10KB).
I have no idea why these transfers are taking place, but I can see them on my Vodofone bills.
Since I am rarely away from my home wifi facility, I would also expect any access to
use wifi as a first choice, and notify me if there was a need to use cellular access.
So I have 2 questions. What are these data transfers that I am not explicitly requesting,
and why are these data transfers not made through free home wifi as a first choice.
Apple has advised me to turn off mobile data unless I am away from my free wifi.
    Mike

Thanks for the reply. I haven't used visual voicemail. My preference would be for any data transfer to be done on wifi when wifi is available. Battery life is not currently an issue for me. I do think that it shoud be possible to find out which service or app is causing the data transfer. Although I am not near my data limit at present, I do think that I have a right to know why a service, for which
    i pay, is bring used.

  • Do you have to turn cellular data on to receive photo attachments by text?

Do you have to turn on cellular data on iPhone 5 in order to receive photo attachments sent by text?

I never turn off cellular on the phone - the phone function is still the primary use for me and there are some data sevices I prefer to keep on at al times. You can restrict some functions from using cellular however: Settings App > General > Cellular > and set as needed in the Use Cellular Data for section. Aslo Check location services and turn off those apps you really don't need location services for.
But ultimately I agree with pdrith. Monotor your cellular data (your provider may even have an app to do that - Verizon in the US does), and based on your plan make a decision about how much you need to worry about it.

  • IPhone 6 Cellular Data Slow

I just recently got my iPhone 6, 16 GB from Sprint. I upgraded from an iPhone 4S. While I love my phone, even with iOS 8.0.2, I am having issues with my cellular data. While I am supposed to be getting LTE in my area, I am mainly stuck on 3G. Also, the phone drops to 1x and eventually to no service. A "Could not activate cellular data network" message pops up from time to time. It's worth noting I live in NW Ohio as far as cellular data coverage goes.
All happens while trying to browse the internet using Safari or other apps which require Internet. Call quality has always been excellent, and I have yet to experience any dropped calls. I have tried resetting my phone, updating my network, and have called Sprint all to no avail. I really enjoy using my iPhone, and hope Apple can resolve the issue.

    Hi kvnrpp,
If you are having an issue with your iPhone not being able to maintain a good connection to the cellular network I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

  • IPhone 5 cellular data charges while using wifi - Carrier AT&T

My iPhone 5 uses cellular data even when connected to wifi.i.  Although some periods show data usage while I was home asleep, other periods were while I was awake and using the wifi with another computer so I know my home network was working during this time.
When I contacted ATT support I was told that this type of data usage was normal when using wifi since the iPhone 5 was advanced and used data at all times, even when associated with wifi networks. The suggested fix was that I disable cellular data to avoid charges. This answer is unacceptable to me since it defeats the purpose of owning a smart phone in the first place .

If they are telling you it's supported, then take it to them for help Apple does not support it. They are NOT a supported carrier as far as Apple is concerned. They are NOT authorized to carry the iPhone. That doesn't mean it won't work, that means that Apple can't help you make it work. Talking to T-Mobile about how to get your phone working on an unsupported carrier is pointless. Talk to Metro PCS or go find a supported carrier... like T-Mobile.

  • How do you disable the "Cellular Data is Turned Off for '[app]'" message?

I keep getting this message on my iPhone.  I know that the programs' access to cellular data has been turned off.  Does anyone know how to disable this message?  Is Apple going to fix this software issue (I know many people have had this problem too)?

I find it very frustrating that only some users like me but not all have this issue.. This is clearly a bug in within the newest update and it is the most annoying. Apple need to fix this. I have no data, it comes up, the wifi is on, it comes up. Regardless of what i do, On or Off and even restoring the device it still continues to do it. Anything posted about how to fix this issue "manually" will be disregarded until Apple tech fix the software issue..
