Pay for iPhoto?!

iPhoto is unresponsive all of a sudden. This is the case with my regular library, a newly created library as well as in an entirely new user account. So, I assume that I have to re-install it. After placing the app in the trash, I then went to the App Store to re-install and, to my surprise, Apple wants $15 for the app that came with my OS!
What gives? Do I really need to pay to get the default software to work properly?!
TIA,
David

Could be
1 - the restore disks that came with the computer - if it came with CDs and you do not know where they are then contact Apple to see if they can be replaced
or
2 - the iLife DVD that you purchased
or
3 - the app store - log in under the Apple id used to purchase the software or to set up the computer - look under purchases - you might have to unhide or accept the Application first
However you probably do not have an applications issue but a data issue that needs to be solved - you need to post details of your system including version of iPhoto and of the OS and detailed symptoms of the problem

To use Photo Stream, you will need iPhoto 9.2 at least. This is a major upgrade from iPhoto 7.1.5 and you will have to buy it.

  • Do I have to pay for iPhoto '11 9.5.1, when I have iPhoto '11 9.4.3?

I upgraded to Mavericks from mountain lion and noticed iPhoto and iMovie did not upgrade with it.  I have iPhoto '11 9.4.3, and when I go to the app store to try to update it, it asks me to pay $14.99 for iPhoto '11 9.5.1.  They are both iPhoto '11 so it seems I should be able to update for free.  Is this correct?  Is my app store just not recognizing the other iPhoto I have installed?
    Please help.

I should think twice if you have / need to pay for iPhoto now when you'll upgrade it.
Apple will not update / support  iPhoto any more, please read this:

Of course not. You already purchased iPhoto and iMovie, so you can reinstall them for free.
If you purchased them from the Mac App Store or you got your Mac after July 2011, open the Mac App Store, log in with your Apple ID, go to Purchases and redownload them. Note that the latest iPhoto and iMovie need OS X Mavericks.
If you purchased them in a DVD, insert the DVD and install them. Then, open  > Software Update, and install the latest version.
If you got your Mac before July 2011, use the Applications Install Disc to install iPhoto and iMovie.

  • I bought my Macbook Air 3 weeks ago (23 March) and have to pay for iPhoto'11 : is that logic ?

Via time machine I used my back up of my previous Macbook Pro if this has any relation to my problem.
Now I feel like being blackmailed by Apple ....... pay or you will loos all your pictures .....

You haven't purchased iPhoto yet, have you?  If not then  contact Apple as ask them why iPhoto wasn't included with the other applications on the MacBook Air?  Because it should have been. You do not need to purcahse it.
You can take it to a local Apple store with your purchase papers and have them install any missing applicaitons.
OR, if you still have your MacBook Pro and the disks that came with it?  If so you can connect the two Macs with a FireWire cable, with the Mac Air in Target Disk Mode,  Transferring files between two computers using FireWire,, and run the Software Installer disk on the MPB to install iPhoto on your MacBook Air.
The installer disk looks like this:

  • Do I have to pay for iPhoto upgrade...

I'm currently running iPhoto 5 (iLife suite 5) on G4 iMac - now from 1st NOvember not possible to order prints/books. BUt software upgrade doesn't offer me to upgrade iPhoto (only iTunes etc) - why not iPhoto? Do I have to upgrade to iPhoto 9 - but looking in the forum it appears maybe some problems with older OS/machines and iLife 9? So do I need to upgrade and to which version is safe? THANKS!

Ah ... when I just called Apple Store to try and purchase iLife 08 - they told me that as I had a non-Intel processor (I have iMac G4) I wouldn't be able to upgrade to iLife 08 and there no chance to print/order books etc via iphoto....

  • IPhoto upgrade, do i have to pay for it ?

Hey Ho chaps, i have been having a right merry go round today, simply helping a lady upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mavericks so that she can use Photo Stream on her new iPhone 4S
it has NOT helped that she didnt know what her computers password was etc. but i do NOW have Mavericks installed and it is currently Indexing for Searches !
So i try to configure iPhoto to enable Photo Stream, it looks as if i have to PAY for it ???? £10.49 !!!
I have Photo Stream on my Mavericks but i dont remember having to pay for iPHOTO  !!!!!!
This lady was told by the local Apple Store when she got the iPhone that to get Photo Stream on her Mac Book Pro she would have to upgrade her Snow Leopard to at least LION, which would have cost her £15 !!, but to pay for iPhoto ???? when it should come pre-installed !
However today, she found that LION is no longer available on the App Store or anywhere else for that matter !.
So she got MAVERICKS for free and let me take her Lap Top home with me to Backup Snow Leopard and Install Mavericks.\
Only to find she gotta pay to get a suitable version of iPhoto for PHOTO STREAM !!!
AM I ON THE RIGHT TRACK here, or have i been de-railed ?
    Tim

    Clarify for your self:
iPhoto 11 is a marketing name for iPhoto 9
iPhoto 09 is a marketing name for iPhoto 8
    So, what has she got.
iPhoto 11 is around a while and early versions of it run on 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8. So it's quite possible that a machine that came with 10.6 and iPhoto 11 would have had all these features as the app was updated. But if that's iPhoto 09 then you need to purchase.

  • I refuse to pay for an app to rename photos

I work professionally in film and video production and just bought a new 64GB iphone 5 for $399, hoping that it would speed up a lot of my workflow (quickly and easily manage media files and sharing, no annoying bugs and the other things we generally expect from Apple). After a couple days of using it I am totally let down, the main problem being how little control over your own file system you are given in the Apple framework. In my industry I really need to be able to fluidly and reliably send files and info about files.
One problem that belongs to this category that I am experiencing is an inability to rename or at least tag photos with identifying keywords. What if a client or coworker needs a bunch of info that can easily be communicated with photos, but you need to organize them somewhat before sending? You are stuck with a mess of generic names and a bunch of recommendations online for paid apps.
    I will say this:
If there is no way for me to rename my own photo files for absolutely free, no strings attached, I am definitely returning the phone on principle! Isn't there at least a free app for this? I am amazed at how unsuccessful my attempts to find one have been so far

    Hi,
First, it is a fundamental characteristic of iOS to have no access or control over files.  The very concept of this mobile OS is based on Apps and not files.
Given said this, your post appears really strange to me.  If you do work as a professional in film industries, please tell me you don't rely only an iPhone camera for pictures and movies!  It's definetively not intended for that.  Even I, who's only an amateur, use external softwares to manage libraries and do modification like Aperture or iMovies.
If you want to edit movies/picture took externally and sync to your iPhone, then, you must edit with the software initially used.  If you want to edit movies/picture took with your iPhone, then don't mention you are a professional and like anyone, pay for iPhoto or iMovies.
Mobiles devices are based on the idea of paying per function cheap and small softwares.  A couple of dollards for usefull features should not raise concern up to returning the hardware.  It's more probable that you were looking at the wrong hardware in the first place to fullfill your needs.
And I can tell you, even on a Nikon camera, I don't change Tag nor files names and I'm only an amateur.  You should rethink your process flow.

  • Have to pay for iLife for the 2nd time!?

I've got iLife apps on my mac mini mid 2011. I wanted to install them on my mb air mid 2013, but for some reason iPhoto and iMovie aren't free, except GarageBand - this app is free. I've already bought iLife apps from one Apple ID on my mac mini and the same ID I use now on my mb air. Do I have to pay for iPhoto again?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your MacBook Air should come with those applications for free. On your MacBook Air, open the Mac App Store, log in with the Apple ID you used to set it up, go to Purchases and accept iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, Pages, Keynote and Numbers.
If you do not see any application to accept, see > http://www.apple.com/creativity-apps/mac/up-to-date/
