Payment methods on Family Share

Is there any way to keep separate payment methods for accounts linked on a Family Share setup?

Hello microKOAT,
With Family Sharing, billing is only setup through the family organizer unless the other accounts have iTunes Store credit or gift card balance. It will bill the credit first and if anything is left over, it will then default to your card. Take a look at the article below for more information.

  • Paypal not a valid payment method for family sharing

I have had paypal configured on my account for years.  But now, for some reason while trying to set up Family Sharing on my iPad, it thinks Paypal is not a valid payment method.  Should I be trying to set up Family Sharing from iTunes instead of my iPad?

I've read from others that at the preset time you have to use a credit card rather than a debit card.  If you're using a debit card you might try entering a credit card instead, at least until the debit card option is restored.

  • Family sharing not allowing me to make purchases without using my husband's payment method

My Husband and I recently took the plunge and joined Family Sharing.
Having pretty hectic lives, we haven't worked it all out as yet - and today, I tried purchasing an App - and all of a sudden I am being required to use my husbands iTunes account and Payment Methods, rather than my own, which I have used for many years.
We did make my husband the organiser, however, I am on the account as an adult, and find this sudden change invasive and unacceptable.   Nothing in the literature explaining family sharing says that the adult who is not the organiser, can no longer control their own purchases and purchase methods.
we love the idea of family sharing for photos, movies, apps, books etc ....  However I do not want my purchases and subscription communications to go through to my husband.  We are both busy, independent adults - and although we have nothing to hide from one another, what we each do should be communicated to and controlled by each of us.
I just called support, and they are telling me that there is nothing they can do about this ?
Anyone got any advice, or experiences to share ?  TIA

Your purchases will be charged against the Organizer's charge card on file, but they will reside under the Apple ID that you are purchasing them under (so if later, you were to leave Family Sharing, they would be "owned" by your Apple ID). If you have a gift card on file for your Apple ID, it will take the funds from the gift card first before going to the Organizer's charge card, but the entire set-up of Family Sharing is one that is designed to charge all purchases against the Organizer's card on file.
How is the set-up invasive, exactly? Family Sharing is primarily designed for families, especially ones with small children. The FAQs and ad pages are very clear about the fact that the Organizer pay for all purchases:

  • To download shared content, your family must have a valid payment method

I'm trying to share movies bought on my account with my son and keep receiving the message "to download shared content, your family must have a valid payment method". I already have a credit card linked to my account. Help?

    Hi Mel3b,
I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with Family Sharing. If you are getting the "valid payment" alert message when you alreadyt have a credit card on file, you may want to try re-entering the card details on the account, even if you know they are currently correct. • Using Family Sharing without sharing payment method

I love the family sharing feature. My yougest daughter is in the family sharing group. I want my oldest daughter to be in it to, to use the shared photo group, and the calander and the location sharing. However, I don't want her to buy things using my credit card.
Is there a way to have someone in the family group that does not share your payment method?

    Anyone?

  • Can you use family share without sharing payment?

My wife and I purchase items separately with our individual apple ID's. Is there a way that we can both use family sharing but not use my payment info? We have no kids but have separate spending accounts that we like to keep separate.
    Thanks.
    -Brian

There are some arrangements which would benefit from sharing whilst two family members continuing to have a separate payment option. I'm trying to search for that solution. I would like to share purchases with my wife that she is interested in and visa versa but I only want to pay for things that I'm interested in. If there is some album that I really like and she doesn't then we want it set up that I could pay for that alone rather than through a shared family account. Even with that we would still appreciate sharing each others apps and music when it's something we would like to have on our devices and shared mac.
When you've switched to family sharing and family members choose to pay with a second payment method other than the shared credit account?

  • Can members of a family group use their own credit card or payment method other than the Family Organizer's credit card?

In Family Sharing, is the Family Organizer's credit card the only method of payment for all family members? Or can family members also pay with their own credit card?

    Hello Trisa295,
Family sharing payments are all managed by the Organizer, and only the billing information on that account can be used to pay for an iTunes purchase. Take a look at this info from the following article:
    Family purchases and payments
With Family Sharing, one adult in the family—the family organizer—agrees to pay for any iTunes, iBooks, and App Store purchases that other family members initiate while they're part of the family group. This also includes ongoing subscription purchases initiated by family members, such as iCloud storage, iTunes Match, and Newsstand subscriptions.
If the members of the Family have credits or have iTunes Gift cards redeemed, that balance gets used first so an option you all have is to apply iTunes credit in some way to these member accounts:
After you set up your family, any time a family member initiates a new purchase it will be billed directly to your account unless that family member has gift or store credit. First, their store credit will be used to pay the partial or total bill. The remainder will bill to the family organizer's card.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Can you have multiple payment methods in one family?

I am a college student trying to make iTunes purchases. I put my account on my own Debit card and now make purchases through this. However, once I joined my Family group in iCloud, it overrode my payment info to the family card. Can we still be in a family and access each other's purchases and shared iCloud items such as Calendars and Reminders, etc. but be on separate payment methods?

If you are in a Family Sharing group, but are not the Family Organizer, keep a credit balance on your account by redeeming gift cards. Any purchased items will then be charged to your account instead of the Family Organizer's credit card.

  • Can I have multiple payment methods on my Family Sharing account?

My family and I all just joined the Apple community, and we set up a family sharing account. However, everyone in our family sharing account would like to use our own methods of payment, (like myself, my dad, etc). Can we do this?

    Hello steevo_711,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains helpful advice concerning Family Sharing payments. There can be only one payment method which is associated with the family organizer:
    Setting up Family Sharing
When you set up Family Sharing, you'll be asked to confirm that you agree to pay for purchases initiated by the family members you invite and that you have a valid payment method on file. Valid payment methods for setting up Family Sharing include credit cards and debit cards. You can change the billing method on file in your account at any time in your iTunes & App Store account settings.
    Making purchases
After you set up your family, any time a family member initiates a new purchase it will be billed directly to your account unless that family member has gift or store credit. First, their store credit will be used to pay the partial or total bill. The remainder will bill to the family organizer. As the family organizer, any receipts generated by the transaction will be sent to you. Learn more about how iTunes Store purchases are billed.
Once paid for, a purchased item is added to the account of the family member who initiated the purchase. In other words, the content belongs to them, much as it would if you were buying them a book or a DVD. If Family Sharing is ever disabled, each member will keep the purchases they initiated, even though they were paid for by the family organizer.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.

I had the same problem and found a bunch of others did, too.  Unfortunately all the posts had no responses!  Anyway, I previously had my payment method linked to my paypal.  I tried changing it to my credit card and it worked.  Don't know if there's a bug with using paypal but that seemed to be the culprit for me.  Good luck!

  • HT201079 Am i able to use a different payment method if i am in family sharing?

I am in a family sharing group through iTunes store and app store. I do not want to charge the shared payment method, but instead pay with my own payment method. Am I able to do so? If so, How?

    McDonald,
Yes.  If you are not the Family Organizer, just put some credit on your own account by redeeming a gift card.  Then purchases made by you will be charged against your credit rather than to the Organizer's credit card.

Yes.  Just redeem gift cards so that your own account always has a sufficient credit balance.  Here is how it works:

First, their store credit will be used to pay the partial or total bill. The remainder will bill to the family organizer's card.

  • Family sharing members unable to use payment method

I have set up family sharing and I am the organizer. My credit card shows as the "shared payment method."  I have invited other family members who have accepted. But when they go to make an app purchase, the device asks them to put in their payment information. They do not have any payment information in their apple ID profile, but I they SHOULD be able to use my credit card. Why does it keep asking the for payment/credit card information rather than just charge my card? Thank you

birdseye - I can see you were able to make that upgrade just this morning. Hopefully you're back enjoying your Premium already.
seatuttle - You should be able to change your country settings to the US with either a credit card or with your PayPal details.
When you go to your subscription page you should see a link that reads: "If you intend to use a payment method from a different country you need to change your country".
If you're not seeing this option to upgrade from another launch country let us know. Attaching a screenshot of your subscription page would be a great help.

  • Family sharing - one member get's message no valid payment method

    Hi there,
I have family sharing enabled for my wife and two daughters. The latter can download stuff the app store and update apps. My wife however get's a message that there is no valid payment method attached to the family. But the three other members can download new stuff and update existing apps easily.
It gets weirder when my wife leaves the family sharing cause she keeps getting the same message.
iPhone 6, iPhone 5 and 5s working great. My wife has a 4s.
Any clues how to solve this?
    Tnx a lot, Paul.

    Hi Nancy,
I also found Note 445233 - FPY1: Separate exception indicator for 'amount check'
    "FPY1
During the payment method check the system states that a payment method is not qualified, because the company code-specific amount limits (minimum amount and maximum amount per payment method and company code) prevent this (fields TFK042E-VONBT and TFK042E-BISBT).
The result is the general exception indicator
'006' No valid payment method found."
    Hope this helps
