PB 1.67 HiRes - chimes, won't boot. Tried suggestions in other threads.

sorry -- I hate cross-posting but i'm not getting many hits in the "Using..." forum.
I've tried everything I can find here and elsewhere to get it to boot.
The powerbook chimes and the screen stays black. - No beeping as you would expect with memory problems. HD and optical drives make less sound than they should, for a minute or so. and then it's only fans whirring, it's dead quiet in there.
I've disconnected the optical drive and the PRAM battery, which I suspect was dead anyway. I learned from other threads that PowerBooks do not need a PRAM battery to boot, but a dead PRAM battery can keep your mac from booting. The replacement battery is very expensive so I've just pulled it for now.
With optical drive disconnected, the HD only whirs faintly for 20 seconds but does not seem to be loading the boot sequence.
I've tried replacing the HD with a fresh HD, containing a cloned backup of a PB system (same model) - thought at least that would boot. Did not.
I've tried unseating the RAM and reseating it, and I've tried putting RAM in ONLY the upper or ONLY the lower slot. Still no boot, and no beep either.
I've reset the PMU. I've tried PRAM reset (before removing that), and OF reset, and many other key combinations at startup chime. None had any noticeable effect.
When optical drive was connected, it whirred indecisively but did not spin up.
I discovered a DVD stuck in the drive, which I have removed by disassembling the drive, but when reconnected, the drive whirred exactly as before.
I've also DiskWarriored the original HD and it's in good shape, with the directory rebuilt.
Thanks in advance if any of ye troubleshooters have any advice.

The powerbook chimes and the screen stays black.
Have you hooked up an external screen to see if it's a display issue? If you look really carefully, can you see anything faintly on the Powerbook screen?
I've tried replacing the HD with a fresh HD, containing a cloned backup of a PB system (same model) - thought at least that would boot. Did not.
Have you tried booting to an OS X disk in the DVD drive by holding the C key down?
Have you tried a safe boot holding the option key down?
Do you have an external firewire enclosure you can mount the hard drive in, and reboot holding the alt/option key down, then choosing that?
Have you tried the Apple hardware test, where you insert the first OS X disk that came with your system and reboot holding the alt/option key down, choose AHT, and choose extended test when prompted?
If the answers to those questions are all fail, then it sounds like your logic board has failed.

  • Won't Boot - Tried Everything I Know

My B & W iMac with CD slot won't boot up. I get chime and then blinking ? alternating with folder icon and spinning sound.
    I've tried:
    holding shift down
booting from 8.6 bootable CD holding C down
zapping PRAM (after this I got the chime back)
unplugging everything including keyboard & mouse
    unplugging rom power
    holding down X
booting from OS X CD holding C down
I gave up for a while so the iMac has not been hooked to power for a couple months (bought laptop PC) but now I need old tax files. I don't have original install CD but I've updated to 9.2.1 I think. But the CDs I have may not be appropriate (copied from friends to try).
I don't think I was doing anything risky when it froze originally. I am not too experienced in solving any problems so please answer with beginner language.
    Please help!!
iMac G3 Slot   Mac OS 9.2.x

    Hi Texas Mac Man!
I did not update firmware when I originally looked into upgrading to OS X because there was some incompatibility problem I read about when reading about firmware so I decided against upgrading. My daughter has a newer iMac with OS X so I tried a copy of her disks to see if I could get it to boot up. So I don't believe the OS X is on the iMac but I'm not positive.
Looks like it will take me a little while to read through the tutorial and find which battery and get it but I won't mark this answered just yet.
I am very happy to have heard from a local Mac person!! I didn't know where to go for help. Are you a service person or just a helpful person? If I can't get it working, I will need to go to someone who can fix it.
    Thanks!!

  • 8800 won't boot, tried wiping and reinstalling OS to no avail....

I have an 8800 that won't boot! The red led stays solidly lit for a few seconds after putting in the battery and then nothing else happens...
I've tried using JL_Cmder to reinstall the OS but it wouldn't connect so I went about it the alternate way and it goes thru the first couple steps and then when it tries to reconnect it fails and gives me the message, "could not reconnect during multistage load operation".
Is there anything else I can do to try to get this thing to boot up?

That error is in regard to a low power USB port.
Keep trying, or try another PC.
EDIT, eh, it looks like you have bigger problems anyway:

  • Mini won't boot - tried many methods, disk visible in Target Disk Mode

I have a PPC Mac Mini running Leopard. It stopped booting last week. It goes to the point where the Apple appears and then stops. No moving ring at the bottom of the screen.
I've done the following w/ no luck to get it booting.
    1) Put it in Target Disk mode and run Disk Utility. Repaired permissions and did a Repair Disk. No issues found.
    2) Put it in Target Disk mode and ran Tech Tool Pro. Checked volume/file structures and sectors. Nothing found.
    3) Reset PRAM.
In Target Disk Mode, I can see the files. But I want to get it running one last time to archive some program configuration files. I know I can erase and restore from a TM backup but I'm using that as a last resort. Other than trying Spinrite, any other ideas?

You must be very keen on those config files. You are going thru a lot of work to get them. But if you must ...
If you have an extra firwire external drive free, that you can partition with APM (Apple Partition Map) and format, then you could use your original install disc or Leopard install disc to install a bootable version of OSX on that external.
Boot from the external, and then download the latest combo update for Leopard and install it on the internal drive. Hopefully that will fix the the internal enough to make it bootable.
Another approach is to pay $100 for DiskWarrior. Most of the time it can fix a problem like yours ... but no guarantees. It is a worthwhile program to own anyway, however.

  • MacBook Pro won't boot - tried safe mode but it went to black screen after trying.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
    Alternatively, see:

Choose the version you have installed now:
OS X Yosemite- Reinstall OS X

  • Mac OS X won't boot--tried everything

I did the Quicktime update that came out a few days ago... When I restarted, everything went okay until the "Mac OS X" screen. It went about a half a centimeter on the progress bar in the "Mac OS X" window and then the window disappeared and I was faced by a blue screen. I tried restarting repeatedly. Same thing every time. The "Mac Os X" window disappears. The screen changes to a lighter shade of blue after a few seconds. Every few seconds, a progress wheel like the one under the apple when you first start up the computer appears, makes half a revolution, and vanishes. I have run Techtool Deluxe, Disk Utility off of the install disk (a volume had to be repaired, but as far as I can tell repairing it didn't help at all), Mac OS X Boot Utility, reset the Pram, and booted in Safe Mode as well. Mac OS X Boot Utility said that I had a memory error--the error code was "post/0/2048". Is there anything else I can do? I don't want to have to send my laptop in to Apple.
Someone said something about a "Setup Assistant" in a reply to my earlier post, what is that? Would it help?

    Hello,
this is a known issue for some who installed the QT 7.4.1 update.
    Here are two suggested fixes:
    (1) The first thing to try in this case (if you are in the Setup Assistant loop) is to simply choose "Shutdown" from within Setup Assistant. This may cause the QuickTime installer to resume or re-apply and a normal restart to occur.
(2)The next recommended procedure is to simply boot in Safe Mode -- accomplished by holding down the Shift key while your Mac is starting up. After the safe boot, restart normally. A number of maintenance tasks are performed during the safe boot, and you might not need to perform any additional troubleshooting. You might receive a message indicating that the update has finished installing after performing the safe boot.
Sounds like #2 of 2 should be the first thing you try.

  • Xserve G4 Won't Boot Off Tiger CD; Other OSXS G4 Boot Drive

The CD part is probably because the optical drive is bad, but I installed Tiger server onto a known-good drive module and it will boot another Xserve, but not the one with the bad optical. It will, however, boot off of a drive with Panther Server. I can also not boot the bad Xserve with a boot drive from another Xserve of the same model.
    Any ideas?

Apparently, you can run a G4 Xserve without a video card under Server 10.3; you can't run it without one under 10.4... Threw a video card in and it booted just fine. I had no idea that it wouldn't boot without it!
Why was there no video? The other server in the office is a G5 Xserve which was built sans video. The guy that set it up couldn't do it headless so he pulled the card from a G4 Xserve and never put it back.

  • I have an iMac that won't boot up.  I've read all posts on this subject to no avail.  When power is switched on, it chimes, Apple logo appears, spinning wheel, then loading bar starts to fill.  It gets to about 25% then switches off! Help please!

iMac that won't boot up!   When power is switched on it chimes, Apple logo appears, then loading bar, then spinning wheel.  Bar seems to load up and gets to around 25%, then reverts to the start again, gets to about 20% on the bar and then switches itself off leaving a black screen.  Tried all the remedies on internet with no avail so would welcome some advice other than binning what is a relatively new computer.  Earliest appointment Apple could offer was Thursday 17th, really useful for a business user _ not impressed,

You've probably tried this, but will it Safe Boot? Restart holding down the Shift key until you see the grey progress bar. You'll need to input your admin password during bootup. If it will boot you can then try to eject the disk using the various suggestions here that you haven't tried already:

  • System won't boot-no chime.

Despite repeated attempts and resetting the CUDA button, the system won't boot when start button is pressed. In the first few seconds it seems to make normal sounds; but no chime and settles into simply fan noise. This is true even if using C (with an Install CD). or Shift key. Is there anything else I can try? (I know it's actually a G3 B&W Motherboard; but I had nowhwere else to post it)

I do not remember exactly what was happening when it stopped. It may have been executing something , hung up, and wouldn't respond to the Command-Opt-Esc or I do remember one incident when it was booting up and stopped when it was partly thru "searching for local discs.
I checked the ref. article and tried to measure the voltages on the power connector. I was never quite sure what pin was what, since the colors did not jive with those in the article. At any rate 2 were approx. + 5 V (one was 4.85), the rest were essentially zero (I believe 1 or 2 were about 300 mv). I did notice that when the power connector is reconnected and start up is attempted, 3 little green lights come on on the motherboard. One goes off after a while.
I have tried the old Sonnet upgrade and have tried reseating all the RAM modules. All to no avail.
The Hard drive and all other parts seemed to be working fine prior to the failure.

  • Won't boot....no chime except sometimes.

My Powerbook G4 Titanium works perfectly. Except when I shut down or restart, it won't restart. I press the power button, hear some motors whir to life (HD? fan? optical drive when CD is inserted). But no chime and no boot. Caps Lock and Numeric Lock green LED indicators come on.
I hold the power button down for 10 seconds, motors stop. Try again. Same results. Try 12 more times, then it works. And works perfectly until I shut down again. Ran Tech Tools 4, and all the hardware tests, including SMART, passed. I removed and reinstalled the two RAM chips in all the possible configurations, but it made no difference. I tried all the PMU reset routines I could find on line, but it didn't reset.
Thanks to my new dot mac account, unbeknownst to me it threw a five gig file on my HD which really maxxed it out. Later got rid of that (thanks for the warning Apple) and dumped another 10 or so gigs to give the HD some breathing room. But all to no avail.
But here I am with a computer that works perfectly if I take an hour and a half of screwing with it to coax it to boot.
    Please help.

Apple's KB docs used to say that it sometimes reset the date/time. It now says it will reset the date and time. Be that as it may, I have reset PMU and had both results, 100% positive.
Apple says that if you suspect PMU has not been reset, do it again.
In any case, the only way that I can think of to quasi-prove PMU has been reset is to take a backdoor approach. CPU speeds, for some reason, are erroneously reported as 667 on 800-1GHz TiBooks. But if you do a PMU reset, then check CPU speed in Terminal, it will report CPU speed correctly. This only holds true until the next restart without a PMU reset, then CPU will once again be erroneously reported. To check CPU speed:
-Make sure Energy Saver>Options>Processor Performance is set to Highest
    -Shut down and Reset PMU
    -Boot
-Make sure Energy Saver>Options>Processor Performance is set to Highest
    -Open Terminal and enter:
    sysctl hw.cpufrequency
That should give you your answer as to whether or not the PMU has actually been reset, regardless of date/time. Is it 100% foolproof? I don't know, but in my experience, after many test runs, I would trust it as such.

  • SP G5 won't boot, no chime, no LED

I have a single processor G5 that won't boot. I was using it and all of a sudden, everything frooze - the first time in the almost 3 years that I have owned it. As it sat there, the fan started to slowly speed up.
I shut it down with the power button and when I tried to reboot, I did not get a chime or any other sign of life. I think the power LED came on and stayed on. I tried the PMU reset (once) and tried another reboot. This time, it started up again without the chime and the power LED went off after I pressed it and stayed off.
I tried removing and reseating the memory, the video card and I removed an Alchemy TV card. Still no luck. I checked the power to the battery and it is good. I tried removing the battery, waited for five minutes and then I reinstalled. Still no luck. If I leave it on, the fans slowly kicks into high gear.
Sounds pretty serious to me. I think at this point, it requires a service call. Can I try my local PC computer repair, or is Apple the only way to go? I will have to ship it to Apple.

    Hi Lawrence,
The same thing happened to my dual 2.5 G5 yesterday! I also tried all of the things you tried. After discussing the issue and trying several different steps suggested by the Apple Tech Support person on the telephone, it was suggested that either the power supply, logic board or both were defective. The Apple Tech Support person recommended that I take the machine either to the nearest Apple Store or the Apple Service provider where I purchased the G5. I delivered my machine to my service provider this morning and the initial diagnosis, on the basis of symptoms, is consistent with that of Apple Tech Support. I have confidence in my service provider's capability because they successfully replaced a failed logic board withing two months of my purchasing the machine. I've had no problems until yesterday. Hopefully, they'll have a firm diagnosis in a day or so. I'll let you know how it works out. I'm glad I have Apple Care!
