PB 12" 1.33 GHz (10.4.1) + NEC LT156 LCD Projector

Today I tried to hook up my powerbook to the LCD projector using the mini-DVI to VGA adapter. However, I couldn't anything to show on the projector. It seems to detect the device as the PB screen flashes dark and back on again whenever I attach or detach it from the projector.
I know the PB worked with the projector previously using Panther OS. I was wondering whether anyone has had issues with plugging a projector after upgrading to Tiger.

EXTERNAL MONITOR ADAPTORS: Critique of Apple Document No. 86507: PowerBook G4 (12-inch): Adapters and Resolutions
"... The Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter allows the PowerBook G4 (12-inch DVI), ...."
It is very disorienting in an APPLE Technical article in such for Apple to say: [[we've advertised the PowerBook 12" G4 external monitor hookup in tech specs]], we list all the "compatible 12" powerbook G4 models" for these adaptors and then to say "IT DOESN'T WORK" for all of the 12" external monitor adaptors! None work?! - period? Misprint, did I mis-read? Nothing works? And Apple gives not the slighest hint of what is being done. Many of us purchased the product to run projectors ( - the prolem noted on this thread - ) and external displays- on the basis of advertized spec's.
A. How could we find out about what Apple appears to know here? What is Apple doing - there must be some alternative cable/software fix posible?
My Apple 12" G4 1.5 Gz Powerbook ( July 13, 05 purchase) DOES in fact run an NEC multisync LCD 17" 1700 v monitor at the powerbook resolution of 1024 X768 - using the mini DVI - VGA adaptor. It mainly also appears to be partially working, full screen, with the higher resolutions (1152 by 864 and 1280 by 960): Apple e-mail works full screen, and the monitor behavior is just as Apple suggests in its "...run from an external monitor" articles.
However, Microsoft Word 2004 (w/latest update including 11.2.1) does not reliably display a document over the full screen: the bottom edge usually will not go below the 1024 by 768 space, the window will lock its dimension, and scroll is garbled. The Word program is unfortunately the program I use most.
B. Other comments about this external monitor/softward combination?

  • Lost S-Video Output

I have been using a G4 Powerbook 17-inch, 1.33 Ghz connected to an NEC VT470 LCD Projector through the S-Video output (Mirroring). It had been working just fine until recently - the s-video output stopped working. The odd part of this is that if I connect through composite video and the s-video to composite adaptor,It works. I have confirmed that the s-video input of the projector works, and i've tried the same thing on a 52" DLP rear-projection TV with the same results - composite video through the composite adaptor but no s-video straight through the s-video output. This makes me wonder if there's just a setting that's been changed or turned off. Another note: the Powerbook will not "detect" the projector when connected through s-video, but it does when using composite through the adaptor. Any ideas?

That does sound like a faulty video card - I just read another post regarding faulty video card - in that case replaced under warraty by Apple.

  • 1.5 GHZ vs. 1.67 LCD screen

Do the 1.5 ghz and the 1.67 ghz (low res) use the same LCD screen?

Hi, Applee. The last 1.67GHz 15" PBG4 is the only Aluminum model with a native resolution other than 1280 x 854; all the other Aluminum 15" models share that resolution. If you're wondering whether the LCD panels or complete display assemblies can be interchanged among different models, that question is best addressed to any of the following parts vendors, who will probably have an authoritative answer for you:

  • Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter won't work on thunderbolt port

    Hello
    I bought 2 new Macbook Pro 13' , 2.9 Ghz Intel Core i7, with 8 Go 1600Mhz DDR3,  Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB, Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E2617).
I have connected a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter in order to show presentations on different LCD projectors but  no image appear.
The external monitor is detected but no image is shown. I have tried to change the frequencies: parts of the screen appears but no a correct image. I have the same symptoms with the 2 Macbook Pro. Using old Macbook Pro with the same Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter, the slides are showns normally.
I make a test with a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter and with a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter and everythings works correctly with both adapters.
    Does anybody has a solution?
Thank in advance for your help
    Philippe

By any chance were you using a VGA->DVI adapter when trying to use the Mini-DisplayPort->VGA adapter? As in Mini-DisplayPort->VGA->DVI?
I had trouble with this. I found going straight to Mini-DisplayPort->VGA or Mini-DisplayPort->DVI worked perfectly but once I added a VGA->DVI or DVI->VGA adapter to the chain the screen would be detected by OS X but the monitor itself would give the "No signal detected" message. I tried all these combinations on the same monitor.
Not sure if it helps your situation but I have noticed some similar issues.
EDIT: Oh, and I have the new MacBook Pro 15inch with Retina all fully updated. I noticed that with my late-2009 White Macbook didn't have this issue with the cables and adapters.

  • DVI to ADC adapter forcing powerbook to shut down on connection

    Hi there,
I have been using my powerbook 1.25GHz for about 8 months with my DVI to ADC adapter to connect to my 22" cinema display with no troubles whatsoever. Yesterday evening when I came home as soon as connected the adapter to my powerbook- it shut down my powerbook within a couple of seconds. Not only that I was blasted with a 3-5 second low tone from my powerbook as it attempted to restart. At the same time the sleep light (one that purrs softly in sleep mode on the powerbook) flashed in quick succession for the length of time that my powerbook made the the long beep noise.
Following this the computer then makes the usual start up noise but nothing happens on either my powerbook display or the 22" display. I am then required to take out the adapter connection from my powerbook and my computer restarts normally after holding down the start button again.
I have tried a few times now to connect the adapter with the same problem. Has anyone else experienced this or have any idea what the sound being emitted is all about and the disco light display from my powerbook?
Would be grateful for some hints... Thanks!
    1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

The exact same things (low tone, furiously flashing sleep light) has happened to me on several occasions, and it happened again today. I just googled up the symptoms and this is where I landed. The only thing I can correlate among our experiences is that the DVI connection on the powerbook is involved (the problem may or may not have anything to do with the ADC adapter).
For my problem, it's usually occurred after I've either just connected or disconnected a second display using an Apple dvi-->adc powered adapter or a small unpowered dongle (dvi -->vga) for an lcd projector. The restart after either one fails can take quite awhile.
Twice in the past six months, I've been at the "two minute warning" before a presentation, and the book has crapped out just as I connect it to the projector and then it's gone into the psycho light and sound mode you described. Today's failure occurred after unhooking from the powered Apple DVI-->ADC adapter at my desk to go down the hall for a meeting. The computer went into blue screen and stayed there after it was disconnected from the Studio Display and DVI-->ADC adapter. Attempting to hard reset/powerdown by holding down the power button initiated the tone/light flashing.
These few cases may seem pretty isolated, but perhaps a pattern will emerge if people keep adding their experiences.

  • HDMI Output Failure on 2-Mini's After 10.9.3 Update

I have two separate (Late 2012, OS X 10.8) Mini's that are both (2.6 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3) that have been hooked-up to identical Flanders Scientific professional HD monitors via HDMI cables from the computer output to HDMI / DVI adapters into the monitor input and they have worked flawlessly in that configuration since purchase in July of last year. THAT IS UNTIL, I made the stupid mistake of installing OS X 10.9.3 ---
I updated both Mini-A and Mini-B within a few minutes of eachother while they remained online and wired to the monitors in that identical configuration. Mini-A was the first to complete the download and install of 10.9.3 and when it rebooted, the display image did not return. Subsequently, a few minutes later, Mini-B completed the download, install and reboot with the identical result of missing display image.
    Monitor info:
    2 x Flanders Scientific LM-2140W, 1920x1080, 10 bit, switchable multi-input (2 x HD/SDI, YPbPr & RGB Component, 1 x SD/SDI, DVI-I / DVI-A / DVI-D switchable YPbPr / Limited RGB / Full RGB)
Needless to say, I have been fiddle-f***ing around trying to resolve the issue for more than a week to no avail. The HDMI output signal is no longer present on both computers and the only way to feed a signal to a monitor is now via the thunderbolt / mini-display port output using a Mini-Display Portt to DVI-I or DVI-D adapter at the computer to DVI cable into the monitor.
    Troubleshooting Procedure included.
PRAM / NVRAM / SMC Reset (no change)
    Alternate Cables (no change)
    Alternate Monitors (no change)
Alternate Computers running OS X 10.8.5 via HDMI wiring schema as before (image on both monitors)
I'm no GENIUS, but I do have a modecum of experience with troubleshooting this kind of stuff and I am 100% confident that OS X 10.9.3 has caused this problem. Now, who wants to tell me how to fix it before my warranty runs out in 45 days.

So to be clear, this issue occurs on any input with the Denon Receiver.  Occurs from both HDMI out and MiniDisplay Port out.  Goes away when we reinstall the OS and update it to 10.9.2.  Comes back as soon as we update to 10.9.3.

Have you been able to use the Mac Mini directly attached to the plasma/LCD/projector with out going through the Denon AVR? Even with 10.9.3 installed?
I have a Pioneer AVR and I have the Mac attached via a HDMI to HDMI and all is working for me. Can your Denon do some upscaling? Some AVR, like my VSX-53 can change the scaling of the input video. Meaning if I still had my Apple TV 2 which outputs 720P only, can be upscaled in my AVR to 1080i or 1080P or even 24fps. Heck, I could even plug in an old style Red, White, Yellow cable and upscale it to 1080P and output it HDMI.
I am wondering if your Denon is able to do that and it might be set wrong. Check the owners manual for such settings. Even the plasma/LCD/project could be doing the upscaling too. So check that too.

  • Photoshop CS4 Freezes when opening PDFs

When I drag two, 2-page PDFs onto Photoshop CS4 to open them, PS opens one page of one PDF and then freezes. I can replicate this every time I try.
Once PS freezes it takes a little patience to get it to force quit.
    Any advice?

Not to dig up the past, but I've been having this problem since a couple of months ago, and I have an idea about what might be causing the bug. It IS a bug.
My workflow involves taking hundreds of PSD and PDF files for product packaging and converting them to 3D and 2D product shots. We have to supply retailers with high-res JPGs of our distributed products. Most of the original files have crop marks, color bars, etc.
In the past, all I had to do was drag my files, whatever they were, to the dock. I would typically work in batches, pulling up 10 or so files at once, cropping them, and then running an action, depending on the general format. Pretty much every layout is a different size, or using a different template, or what have you, so using an action to do the actual cropping is completely out of the question. Cropping in Acrobat is horribly implemented, so that's out of the question.
One day I started doing some image processing as normal, and photoshop opened the first PDF, rasterized it, and then became completely unresponsive. Well, let me specifically qualify that. It lets me continue using any application other than photoshop, and it will let me click on the menus, which will drop down from the menu bar, but you can't select any commands at all. They aren't grayed out, they just don't respond. The behavior is exactly what you would get if you had a dialog box open, but there isn't an open dialog box. There SHOULD be (for the next PDF), but it isn't there.
You can't "quit" or close that first PDF or anything. Some commands will try to function (scripts) but fail and say "Sorry, something major happened, and I can't continue" (yes, that's really the error message).
OS X doesn't think that PS is locked up. PS doesn't think it is locked up, but it won't do anything at all. It only happens with multiple PDFs being dragged to the dock or opened through "file/open." In fact, if you select 30 PSD files, 10 JPGs, 5 EPS files, 1 PDF and 10 Illustrator files, it will work just fine. 2 PDFs? locks up.
I've found one way to get around this bug, and it might work for those of you with this problem. Use the File/Scripts/Image Processor tool to rasterize your PDFs to PSD files as an intermediate step, and then you can open them in Photoshop. If you need something other than pg 1 of a multipage document, you'll have to edit in acrobat first to get rid of unwanted leading pages.
That's been my work-around for a few months.
I just recently moved from my Mac Pro to a new MacBook Pro. I did a clean install, and then ran migration assistant to move my stuff over to a new account.
Everything went well, but the photoshop bug appeared to follow me to a new machine. I was very frustrated.
Then I realized what had changed around the time of this bug originally showing up: I'd added a second monitor!
So, thinking I'd figured out the bug and how to get around it for real, I just disconnected my external monitor and force-quit Photoshop. Opened it back up, and the bug is still there in force, even with one display active.
    Here's my info, to clarify:
    Original machine with the bug:
    Mac Pro 2 x 2.66 ghz (4 core 2007 model)
    8GB RAM
    320 GB velociraptor (system drive)
    1.5TB RAID 0, 900 GB free (scratch)
    10.5.7-10.6.6 (bug never went away)
    2 NEC 20" LCDs
    CS5 Design Premium, fully updated
    New machine, also with bug:
    2011 15" MacBook Pro, 2.0ghz 4 core
    8 GB RAM
120GB SATA6 SSD (system drive, primary scratch), 70 GB free
500 GB stock HDD (in the optical bay, storage drive, secondary scratch), 250 GB free
    10.6.7

  • Set One Display as 'Default' on Startup?

I have a Mac Pro 2.66 GHz Dual-Core that I have connected primarily to one external display (22" LCD monitor by Insignia) and two LCD projectors. The projectors are not always plugged in, because the primary use of this computer is in the tech booth of a theatre space, but logistically, we need to have the VGA cords for the projecters plugged into the back of the Mac at all times. I'm having trouble getting the computer to recognize the LCD monitor as the default/master display on startup (both when the projecters are plugged in and when they're not.) Is there a way to set the display settings to always recognize the port that the LCD monitor is plugged in to as a default? When it doesn't, I can't see the login screen on startup.
Thanks for any help you can give!

Login to your administrator account and in the "Arrangement" tab of "Displays" system preference, drag the menu bar to the picture of the 22" display.
Have you tried switching DVI ports on the back of the computer?

  • Connect to HDTV: Which input to use on TV?

I'd like to connect my 1.25 GHz iMac G4 to my new LCD HDTV (LG LC2D).
The TV has the following input choices:
HDMI and HDMI (DVI) [currently occupied by cable box and DVD player]
RGB (PC) [I think this is a standard VGA jack]
    RS-232C
    AV (audio/video)
    S-video
    component video
What cable (and adapter) do I need? I just want to mirror the iMac display on the TV with the best possible resolution.
    Thanks for any help!

Brenda, Welcome to the discussion area!
Your iMac has a mini-VGA output and supports VGA output (via Apple VGA Display Adapter M8639G/A) or S-video/composite video (via Apple Video Adapter M9109G/A).
RGB (PC) [I think this is a standard VGA jack]
No, RGB is different than VGA.
It looks like your only choice is S-video.

  • Cannot output video to an LCD projector

I own a week 11 model of the Macbook Pro, and mine cannot ouput to an LCD projector at work. Everytime I hook it up and try to detect displays, I get a signal for almost a second, then it goes out of sync and then the projector tells me the signal is lost or out of sync. Other co-workers of mine own Macbook Pro's (in particular a week 22 model) and they perform fine.
I was told earlier that the early manufactured Macbook Pro's had a defective video out, and I was wondering if anyone had anymore information regarding this.

Does someone know what I really need?
In the short term what you need is to post this in the right forum. You posted this in the Panther and earlier OS forum but your computer information says you're using Leopard, but that doesn't matter because this is really a hardware problem and would best be off in the forum for your computer. I'll ask it be moved there.

  • How big a deal is the shared memory for video editing

    Hi,
It looks like the portable Mac I have been waiting for has been released. The one thing that I am wondering about is the shared video? memory. How big a deal is it?
It looks like it should not be an issue with iMovie. How about FCE?
With the Macbook at $1,300 and the entry level MBP at $2,000, $700 is a lot to me- budget and otherwise- Especially since I will add a gig of ram, and the 3 year apple protection plan.

    Hi There,
I use iMovie most of the time for around an hour project and went back and forth with iSlick FX, iTunes, garage band and iDVD, and I find my MAcBook serve me well (2.0 Ghz, 2 GB), and use external LCD for wider view editing area.
The chipset is actually allowed to use up to 224 mb of shared memory (with based 80 mb on os X) and the bigger matched memory you install, the more flexibility for that graphic chipset to allocate shared memory.
The only time my project getting choppy is when I select show waveform for entire clip in my project area. That is when the chipset is lack power to play it real time.
But if you are serious about getting editing and planning to upgrade to Final cut (express or pro) later, MacBook Pro is a better investment and bigger screen too.
    Good Luck

  • Brand New Mini / Brand New LCD Projector

Just bought a Mac Mini 1.42 GHz with the 80 GB hard drive and the Combo drive. I just opened the box and plugged it into my brand new Panasonic PT-900U LCD projector and nothing. No video. Nothing at all.
It seems many people are having video problems with the mini. What's the deal? Will this mini work with my brand new projector? My PowerBook works instanly with the projector. I don't have a monitor to test the mini with at all. I have no way of knowing if the mini is even booting as I can't see a thing.
Can I hook the mini to my PowerBook? HELP!!!

    Snap-
Can you also plug something else, like a computer, into the projector and verify that it is working? And if you had another monitor to plug into the mini I would try that as well.
I do not know what your trouble shooting expertise is, so please excuse me if you have tried that already. But it would help to narrow things down to the actual culprit.
