PB 12" 1.5Ghz runs warm and goes black

My 12" PB has started to run warm very quick when using very demanding programs (Adobe Lightroom) and homepages (F1). Also when I try to transfer a CD to iTunes it happens. I have installed Temperature Monitor and the only abnormal is the Processor Topside temperature which very quick reaches the 79 C. First the fan starts running like a hairdryer then after short time the computer goes to sleep mode. Is it the harddiscproblem or maybe a graphic-card problem ? I would appreciate any suggestions.

hr.stedt:
First of all, it is normal for heat to build up when you are doing processor intensive, or HDD intensive tasks. That is why you have the fan. My fan comes on when copying disks to iTunes, although not right at the outset. When I am backing up, since the HDD is being constantly accessed, or when I am running TechTool Pro for the same reason, the fan comes on after a while. That is normal. However, I don't know why the computer should go to sleep or shut down during the cooling process.
I don't know how you do by way of maintenance, but being sure that your computer is running as efficiently as possible may make a difference. Here are a couple of suggestions:
1. Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
2. Boot from the your Apple Hardware Test disk that came with your computer (it may be on your install disk), and run all tests in a loop by holding down Command + L during the tests.
Please do post back with further questions, or an update.

  • T40P Black screen or fuzzy colors and goes black

I recently have this probpem.  My laptop will go black but still running or fuzzy and starts to fade and goes black but if I lift it up and tap it down softly on the desk the screen comes back up(sometimes).  I read somewhere it could be a loose cable which makes sense if I move or tap it and it comes back on.  Anyways this is happening more often.  I am wondering if I get a monitor to use for the short term will it solve the issue.  I have work to get done in the next month.  I did have to reload all my software in April and thought it could be a driver but agian tapping it makes me think that is not it.  I called an IBM repair shop and they could not fix it within a week and I need it so I am hoping a monitor is a short term fix.  Any solutions?  I can buy a new laptop but would like to fix this one and have as a backup if possible.  I am not tech savy-I do accounting and need the info on the laptop to finish some jjobs.  Also-can I just take out my drive and put in another laptop?  2373-G3U  thanks

    Hello mkandziora,
the incident that your display goes off by moving your unit, seems to point to a problem called flexing.
The mobo flexes and the gfx chip, soldered on mobo, became loose and you´ll need a new mobo.
    In euro´s 150,-.
It´s a more common problem of  T4* series.
    Kind regards

  • Phone vibrates 5 times and goes black, only fully boots while plugged into USB at splash screen

I have an HTC Droid Incredible with stock firmware 2.2 and it will no longer boot properly. The phone is not rooted or altered in any way.
When the power button is pressed, the phone shows the HTC Incredible splash screen, vibrates 5 times, and the screen goes black and the LED light flashes green over and over until the battery is pulled out.
Strangely enough, if the phone is plugged into a PC via USB or a charger during that splash screen for a few seconds (at least 5), it DOES boot up to the OS and seemingly works fine, but the SD card and internal storage is listed as "unavailable".  I can also access the HBOOT menu by holding volume- while turning the phone on.
The phone then functions until the next time it needs to be rebooted, or if you attempt to plug it in via USB again (only when attached to a PC) and remove it, then it vibrates 5 times and goes black once again.  If you repeat the battery pull and USB plug-in process it works again.
I've been able to successfully return it to the factory setting, reflash the stock ROM via SD from the HBOOT menu and from a RUU from my PC, but it doesn't fix the issue. The SD card has been reformatted properly and error checked and can be accessed from a card reader... just not while it is in the phone.
Pretty weird issue that's driving me crazy.

This reply in that link is what I am suggesting should have been implemented in the Droid 4:
“Just adding my 2 cents.  Found this to be odd with my new phone.  Previous WM6.1 phone I would sync and charge overnight with my PC and let both 'sleep' when done.  WM6 must be closing the port when the USB power drops so not to deplete the battery.
Just one more quirk with the new device.”
There is no reason for current leakage into a sleeping computer because of keeping data lines open.  It should be easy enough to shut down the usb port when a voltage drop is detected in on the power pins.  In any case, hopefully my posting will at least alleviate some anxiety for someone down the line.  The procedure gets the phone back up and running in an expedient manner.  Thanks for your research.

  • When i press the on/off my ipod show me the lock screen only half second and goes black.

When i press the on/off my ipod show me the lock screen only half second and goes black.
I try again and works normally. Sometimes do that.
    What Happens?

    Try the standard fixes:
    - Reset. Nothing will belost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

  • IPad screen locks itself and goes black when nudged? very frustrating

Hi, my IPad is driving me nuts! Can anyone help please?
I can be in the middle of anything ( games, apps, typing, banking, etc. etc.) and with the slightest movement or nudge - the screen locks itself and goes black??
I then have to press the home button, slide to unlock it - and it opens back up to exactly where I was.
This happens constantly, and is so frustrating!

Is there a case or screen protector that is possibly interfering with the proximity sensor (detects if the phone is near your face, allows the keypad/screen to be visible when the phone is away from your face)

  • Why is my 2007 HP V17 monitor screen flickering and going black?

I have an old  2007 HP V17 monitor attached with a VGA cable to an early 2008 Macbook running on OS 10.6.8 software  via a  DVI- mini connector (this is also my desktop computer).
About 6 months ago, the HP display started going white and sometimes gray for a few seconds before the image would return, and a couple of times I had to unplug it and restart the Macbook before it came back.  I followed Apple's instructions for testing whether the problem was in the computer  (= resetting the system by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC), but the computer tested okay.  I then purchased a new VGA cable and DVI-mini connector, but the problem persisted.
Today the HP screen suddenly went black (first time going black) and stayed black.   The power button stayed lit and if I pressed the Volume or Auto buttons, the "Volume" etc. message boxes did appear, so the device's backlight is apparently working and not burnt out (unless the backlight has nothing to do with the message boxes showing up, which for all I know may be the case).  However, the Desktop showed up only on the Macbook.
I checked all the connections, removed the DVI connector and plugged it back into the Macbook several times, but the HP screen stayed black, so I removed the DVI connector in order to type this message on the Macbook.  Then, as I was writing this, I decided to plug it back into the Macbook one more time--and sure enough, the display is back!
I love this monitor, which is the perfect size and ergonomic height for my setup, so I'd hate to have to replace it.  Can anyone tell me
Given the information above, what's the probable reason for the flickering and going to black?  If it's the computer, what could it be?  Can I solve this problem myself? (See above; I couldn't find any other ways to test the computer in the Apple articles database.)
If not, could a monitor this old  be repaired?
If so, how much would repairing it cost, since buying a new monitor that I probably wouldn't like as much would cost upwards of $300?
Thanks so much for any advice out there!

I understand that your HP V17 Monitor has gone black and is not displaying anything. I am providing you with some steps for you to try below:
Step 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 2. Hold the power button down for at least one minute
Step 3. Plug the power cord back into the monitor and then into the wall outlet (not a power bar or surge protector)
Step 4. Press the Menu button on the monitor
Step 5. Navigate to the Factory Reset option and select it
If the issue persists after this you can try the monitor on another computer to see if it continues. If it does it appears to be a physical issue and I think it would be best if you contact HP Technical Support for repair options.

  • Flickers while starting up, and goes black

PB G4, 15-in screen. On start up, the screen begins to flicker, and goes completely black by the time the machine is fully running.
I've hooked an external display up to the PB, and it works just fine, so I'm thinking the graphics card is good. Bad LCD? Inverter? Opinions!

After boot, shine a strong light on the dark screen, and see if you see the desktop faintly, or shine the light thru the Apple logo on the lid. If you see the faint desktop, then it should be the backlight that's bad. What is harder to determine is if it's the inverter or the lamps.

  • MacBook slow startsup and goes black in Standbymode

My MacBook behaves strange. After pressing the power button it shows the grey apple screen, which is normal. When the 'windmill symbol dissappears the screen goes to the typical blue screen. So far so good but it won't  load snowleapard. The screen stays blue for 5-10 minutes and suddenly Snowlepard comes up. After that the MB works normal until the standby mode for the screen or the laptop itself kick in. Then the screen goes black and I can 't use the MB anymore. When i close the lid the white indicator light in lower right corner illuminates constantly. Doesn't show the normal sleep rythme. So the MB is still on but doesnt respond to any command. To switch off I have press down the power buttion for 5 seconds.
I tried changing the harddrive but that didnt solve the prioblem. I. ve screened the harddrive but no failuers show up. Can anyone tell me whats wrong here?
    Thanks. Brecht

Isn't anyone experiencing the same problem with his or her cellphone?

  • Monitor enlarges display unexpectedly and goes black

I have had my preferences set for a long time, for display to 'sleep' after 5 min. Recently for no reason while I am working with mouse or keyboard, monitor will enlarge the screen image as it goes black.
Sometimes, I can turn the monitor off and then back on to resolve the issue.
Other times, I have to turn the monitor off and on 3-4 times.
If that doesn't work, I have to push the shut down button on the PowerMac,
and then push it right back on.
Recently, I also got a message to set date and time manually as these were prior to current date. Someone has replied to that issue that a failing pram battery could be the cause.
Could the battery be affecting function of the monitor as well?
How can I troubleshoot the problem?

I assume that the display is a CRT-type and not an LCD. From your description of the picture enlarging and then the display going black, I'd suspect a problem with the flyback transformer, which is responsible for producing/regulating the high voltage that drives the screen. Needing to repeatedly power OFF/ON the display to bring the screen back would support this diagnosis. Because of the shock hazard associated with diagnosing/repairing this portion of a CRT display, a trained professional should do it. It would be less expensive to replace it with a flat-screen display, than pay for the repair.

  • IBook flashing solid colors and goes black.  Can anyone please help?

    Hi there,
My 14-inch iBook has been flashing solid colors (green, red, blue, three different kinds of white) before going black for about a minute, and then start flashing again. I tried restarting repeatedly, and sometimes the normal screen would appear for about 1 minute before flashing colors again.
    Can anyone please help?
    iBook G4

Most likely its a problem with your logic board, specifically, the video memory. Apple has admited to this problem for the G3 ibook after a class action lawsuit was filed. My ibook, a g4 933mhz, which was made shortly after the computers that were part of this lawsuit has the problem. I stupidly paid apple $300 to fix the problem, because they told me that as long as the damage was not caused by me, then it could be fixed for $300. After i paid them and they shipped the laptop to their repair center, they called bacl to say that my logic board was damaged because i had spilled something on my keyboard, and that it would cost $700 to fix. I told them to ship it back, and of course they charged me $300 for nothing. I then tested the keyboard and inspected the laptop for this alleged "water damage" and found nothing. Apple offered no recourse to dispute their findings, and said that there were no problems with my laptops logic board that they were responsible for, despite the online petition having been signed over 700 times. They said that i could pay them an additional $70-$80 to have the apple store take my laptop apart and verify the water damage, and that it didnt guarentee anything, it would just make my case for demanding that the laptop be repaired stronger. Also, even though they orginally said that i had spilled something on the keyboard to cause the damage, when i told them that the keyboard was functioning, they said that i must have placed the laptop in water.
Here is the link to the online petition http://www.petitiononline.com/ibookg4/petition.html . Good luck with your laptop, obviously, unless yours is still under warrenty, i dont recommend sending it to apple for repairs. I should also note that they did originally think that my laptop was part of the problem batch when i brought it to the store, but after they checked the serial number and determined that it was not, then mysteriously the damage was caused by me, and they pocketed my $300.
