PB ejects/rejects blank DVD's

Hi All,
I have read a similar thread but there appears to be little difinitive solution.
My PB superdrive worked fine until recently. Having rebuilt my iPhoto library (fantastic advice available on that folder!) I decided to back it up to a DVD.
Both blank Memorex and JVC DVD-R's are rejected/ejected after a very brief spin. (Not going to buy any more...!)CD and DVD recorded medium work fine.
On a previous thread it is suggested it may be a software update prob? I have updated on each available occasion up to present 10.3.9 with no know previous probs.
I would appreciate any advice or solutions.
Thanks.

The TDK DVD-R works fine - phew!
Anyone want to buy a pile of blank DVD+R discs?
(Bizarre thread - start to finish all to myself. Can I award points for successful advice?)

Does anyone have a problem with the mini suddenly rejecting blank DVD's?

Any blank DVD? Any blank CD? Any blank DL DVD? minus and plus DVDs? RW too? or only one-burn media?
Give some details. In principle, especially if older, may show the beginning of its end, but may be just dirty, needs cleaning etc. There are many discussions on this topic.

  • How do I eject a blank DVD-R?

I inserted a blank DVD-R intending to produce a DVD using iDVD. My iMac made a lot of noise moving the disk around after I inserted it, way more than normal. I tried to make a DVD, but iDVD said to insert a blank disc and there is one in the computer already. There is no icon for the blank DVD in my desktop, so how do I eject it?
    Thanks for your help.

The problem is finally solved. I was using the last blank DVD from the spindle. The manufacturer had attached a piece of cardboard to the back of the blank DVD. I didn't notice it before I put it in my iMac. When I took my iMAC to the Apple store they eventually figured it out and got the blank DVD out. Why the manufacturers feel the need to attach paper to blank DVDs is something hard to understand.
I'm going to look carefully at each blank DVD before I put it in the computer from now on.

  • Ejecting a blank DVD

    Good Morning,
For the first time, I'm trying to burn some pics to a DVD. I insert a blank DVD+R disk into the iMac's disk drive.  My system doesn't seem to recognize the blank - it doesn't show up in Devices in Finder.  Since it doesn't show there, I'm not able to use Finder to eject it.
Prior to inserting that blank, I had played another DVD video earlier with no problems and Finder showed that disk in Devices.
      1. How do I eject that disk?
      2. If Finder showed the DVD video disk in Devices earlier, why doesn't Finder see that blank disk?
I have an iMac 24 with Lion installed.
    Thanks in advance!  Vince.

Hi, I just had a similar problem, and found that Option+Eject would eject a blank dvdrom.  (OSX 10.6.8 on friend's recent, big iMac.)
Apparently, if Finder does not recognize a filesystem on media, it does not display an icon for it in the Finder sidebar (and no eject button next to it).
To reproduce: insert blank dvdrom; in about 15s a dialog comes up, asking what to do; choose Ignore.  Now try to eject.  Eject button does nothing.  Option+Eject does eject the media.

  • My PB Rejects Blank DVDs & Won't Burn

My 17" PB w/ superdrive is about 6 mos old... Tried burning DVDs for the first time, but every time I insert a blank DVD my PB "thinks" for a few secs, then ejects the DVD; never gives me the option to burn.
The DVDs are Memorex brand... is this a known PB/Tiger issue, should I try a different brand of DVDs, or am I just missing something totally obvious?
    Thanks!
    PowerBook 17" G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Depending on what you are trying to burn and with which application, you only need to press the Burn button and then wait for the app to ask you to insert the blank media, rather than inserting the media first and then setting up your data to burn to it.
It also may be that there is a problem with the media itself and that you should try a better brand (even Memorex manufactures different grades of media), or a different batch of the same media.
It also may be that you need to reset the Power Management Unit (PMU). For a 1.67GHz PowerBook, the process for resetting the PMU is as follows:
    1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
    2. Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
    3. Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
    4. Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
    5. Press the Power button to restart the computer.
If you do not have a 1.67GHz 17" PowerBook, and/or you are interested in more information about resetting the PMU, see this KBase document:

    Good luck!

  • How do I eject a blank DVD....

....that is NOT showing up on the desktop??
I had the same problem with iDVD '08 that many others were having and found the solution in this forum and thanks a lot for that fix! It worked like a charm!
But I still have work to do on a video in iMovie before I burn it to a DVD but there's already a blank DVD in the machine but how do I get it out?????
    Thanks!!!

Thanks but that's the first place that I checked (system preferences) and I have it set to open iDVD when inserting a blank DVD.....not 'ignore'. But thanks for the suggestion.
Seems that it has something to do with the leftover files from the older version of iDVD. The new version in iLife '08 needs some minor tweaking to get it to open.

  • On my iMac the superdrive keeps ejecting my blank DVD.  What's the fix?

    It's a DVD-R Verbatim disk.  What's the fix?
    Thanks.

First thing is try another brand of DVD-Rs. Some are more reliable than others.
If that doesn't work, does it eject CDs as well? Movie DVDs?
Let us know, we'll keep working with you.
    Best of luck.

  • My Mac Mini keeps ejecting my blank DVD -R, I don't know why.

I have never tried to use this function of my mac before, but I bought the type of DVD listed in Finder under DVD and every time I put it in there it comes back out! Help!

    USMCwife-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards.
As mentioned, the drives can be picky about the media that they use. My guess is that you may not have a DVD burner in that unit.
Go to the Apple menu ->About this Mac ->More Info and up pops the System Profiler. In the left column should be a heading called "Disc Burning". Click on that and it should tell you what kind of media you can use and whether or not it should read or write DVD's.
    Luck-

  • My superdrive rejects blank dvd.

When I try to burn a DVD-R, I get this message:
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key=ABORTED COMMAND
    Sense Code=0x4E
    OVERLAPPED COMMANDS ATTEMPTED
This happens perodically, but not allways.

Try a different brand of dvd.
If a third party is used to burn the dvd, update the software if available.
    Reset SMC.

    Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    Best.

  • Blank DVD +R eject from drive

Alright, I've been burning things with these same dvd's for the past couple days without a single problem, but all of the sudden today, my drive keeps ejecting the blank dvd's. It still works fine with movie dvd's, cds, and even the same dvd+r's that have data on them. What happens is, I put a blank dvd in, it sounds like it's trying, then makes a noise like a rock is in there skipping around, then it tries again and ejects. I have a macbook pro bought december 2009 brand new. Any help would be great, thank you.

If there was something that just needed to be cleaned, I don't think that the other types of discs would be working. Everything gets read just fine except for blank dvd's...

  • IMAC SUPERDRIVE EJECTS Blank DVDs

My Imac Superdrive ejects all blank dvd but can read all movie dvd. Is there anyway to fix it ?

Hi i have the iMac mid 2007, and my superdrive have always been noicy. So i bought an external DVD bruner (samsung) works great, so the interna would not break down. Despite my prudence my internal superdrive are broken now. kjhfhf
    Can´t read, can´t write, can´t do nothing.
Several users has hade problems with these drivers, maybe Apple would extend warrent on thise lousy gizmo´s.
Or make the superdrive like a cassette, so just a push on the side of the iMac makes the superdrive "pop out". So you dont have to demolishe the whole computer just to replace it.
Somtime i wish i worked at Apple so i colud show how a knife-grinder sholud be pulled.

  • URGENT: MBPro Superdrive can't recognize blank DVDs

Hi I have this MacBook Pro (Model version 3,1) purchased last August and I am covered by AppleCare since this July. I currently wanted to burn some data into blank DVD+/-RWs through Toast Titanium, but failed. Sometimes Finder recognizes the existence of a blank DVD inside the drive, but most of the time it just doesn't at all and ejects my blank DVD. In Toast, whenever I tried to burn the data, which is like 4.3GB worth, it "completes" the process at the blink of an eye, which means it didn't burn anything at all.
I've tried multiple DVDs and brands and it just won't work. I have also tried resetting PRAM but to no avail.
This is very annoying since I have to burn the data and mail the DVD out within these 3 days, so it's quite urgent and I didn't expect this to happen since I seldom use the Superdrive and I've been very tender with the slot-loading.
If anyone could help or refer me to a previously-dealt similar case, I would be very glad. Thanks.

Woops! I just realised that my 1st post to this topic didn't get posted so my subsequent one (which is the one listed) doesn't really make sense.....
......anyway, I was probably moaning about the drive with some specifics. Yep, it was cd reading/burning that was the main infuriating problem and had my visit to the genius bar this morning. The guy tested the drive through his operating system and its still didn't work so yes, he said the drive is useless. Only 2 years old and not overused at all but I do have a slight dent on the casing near the drive which may or may not have made any difference. He said to buy an external rather than replacing the internal which I did - a LaCie d2 and have just raced through loads of old music cds which is great and backed up lots of stuff to cd which is great too. And its fast.
More money I know but couldn't stand the frustration anymore and its a result and no more time wasting.

  • My macbook is rejecting the blank DVD-R

Trying to copy bunch of photos from iPhoto to DVD - the macbook is rejecting a blank DVD-R - does that mean I need to use DVD+R?

It should handle DVD-R but to check, select the Apple menu and then About this Mac then click on the System Report button. Along the left side of the window that pops up look for Disc Burning and it will show you the media your drive can handle. You should see -R listed.
Assuming that it is, there are a couple reasons the disc might be ejected. The disc might unacceptable for another reason, it is dirty or damaged for example. Cheap media can go bad pretty rapidly which is why I stopped buying large spindles of DVDs. Your drive might be damaged - it has one laser for CDs and another for DVDs. Also the drive lens might be dirty. There are lots of drive cleaning kits - consider them one use only items though because having cleaned one drive it is possible for the dirty 'cleaner' to pass the dirt on to another lens.

  • DVD drive ejects blank DVD R

Every time I load a blank DVD R into the built in drive it ejects. This has only happened recently. Any thoughts please

yes, there are countless blank media types, and there is NO DVD burner out there that will feed them all.
DID you switch to a new DVD blank media?
Also cheap DVD blank media has about a 10% reject ratio......try further down the stack
hard lessons learned after burning many 10s of 1000s of DVDs.
If it also ejects commercial DVD movies, you have a dirty laser diode lens.
