PB G3 Pismo-Stalls, Hard Disk Disappears

[NOTE - This message originally posted in Older Hardware discussion group. One response appears at end of original message.]
PB G3 firewire (Pismo)
OS 10.4.2
Fastmac G4 550 processor
576 mb RAM
Western Digital 60 MB HD (replacing Toshiba 40 mb HD that I thought was problem)
DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM
The computer starts and works fine for a while until, without any discernible trigger (except maybe physically moving the PB), the PB stalls (twirling rainbow colored disk). Sometimes it first stalls in one application (so I can switch to other apps or the finder using the Command-Tab keys), but eventually it stalls in all apps. Force Quit option (keyboard or menu-activated) does not function. The only option is to shut down and restart. Sometimes it restarts, other times just a flashing question mark in the floppy disk icon.
If I happen to be in Word when the stall occurs (or is about to occur), I first get a dialague box telling me Word can't read from or write to the open file, saying there must be a bad network or floppy disk connection. I can usually quit Word when that dialogue appears, but restarting Word does nothing to fix the problem. Instead, I have to restart the PB.
With the flashing "?," I can hear the HD trying to start spinning again and again, but nothing happens. As noted below, starting with Diskwarrior has at least once resulted in Diskwarrior not being able to find the HD.
ATTEMPTED SOLUTIONS
Run the latest version of Diskwarrior. Does not solve the problem. Sometimes, Diskwarrior cannot even find the hard disk.
Replace the HD - did that switching the Toshiba for the Western Digital drive. The Toshiba works fine in a Firewire HD case. The problem can't be HD.
Reinstall OS X and applications - done multiple times, both archive and clean installs.
Make sure RAM is properly seated.
Reset PRAM.
WHAT'S WRONG?
I think the problem is hardware related (other than HD).
Any suggestions for what to look at and in what order? For example: G4 processor bad; RAM bad (but symptoms don't seem consistent with that); power/charge card bad; something with the heat sink; something with the cable that attaches to the HD.
Is there a way of checking these short of replacing them one by one?
Appreciate any help I can get.

Ken,
Welcome to the discussions!
A very good description of the problem! You obviously have covered a lot of territory troubleshooting this issue and it certainly appears to be a hardware-related.
I think you have fairly well isolated the problem as I see it:
- stall (spinning beach ball) that eventually occurs in all apps;
- a restart that produces the flashing '?';
- DiskWarrior's occasional failure to find the HD.
I would suggest you have a bad HD ribbon cable or a bad HD IDE bridge on the logic board (or some other issue on the logic board) that develops with heat.
Since you have a FireWire HD with a known-good HD, why don't you use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable clone of your internal HD on the FW HD, then boot to the FW HD and run from it and see if the same issue develops.

Thanks for the quick response. I will try what you suggested.
I also was thinking that this may be a heat-related problem, and wonder if maybe I did not put enough - or too much - heat sink compound between the heat exchanger and the processor board. Could it be that simple?
One item I omitted from my original post: before I replaced the Toshiba HD, I noted, when I turned the sleeping PB on its end to carry in my laptop bag), the PB would almost always be stalled when I woke it from sleep, requiring a restart (and too often a directory rebuild using Diskwarrior or an archive

Rebuilt the directory using Diskwarrior, but on the last step received the following error message:
A disk malfunction occurred while writing the replacement directory to the disk. Rebuild this disk again."
Also, this rebuild showed a large number of repairs. When I ran Diskwarrior this morning, it showed there would be no changes to the directory. I've barely used the PB since this morning's rebuild.

  • Space on my hard disk disappearing!

I know isync creates an image of its data on my computer and think that must be why my hard disk space is disappearing before my eyes (I'm now down to 90mb). in the support articles I couldn't find how to locate it and delete it.
I reduced the size of my idisk to about 500mb and used 'Reset Sync Data' to replace all sync info on my computer with info on .mac, but nothing has changed.
I also read that I can also do a hard disk report to see what information can be deleted... but can't see how to do that. It's not an option on Disk utility.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks!

I know isync creates an image of its data on my computer
No, it's not iSync that is doing this - it is *.Mac Sync* (now known as MobileMe Sync).
iSync is only for syncing Contacts and Calandars to third-party mobile phones and PDAs - it does not sync to .Mac/ MobileMe.

  • Going quietly crazy the hard disk disappears if I shutdown

I am having yet another try at getting SL to run this is the third complete wipe and reinstall. I have a bog standard iMac which runs fine on 10.5.8. The only software I have installed is iWork 09, iLife 09 and Libronix (Bible) for Mac.
Everything is fine as long as I don't shut down the system. It will reboot OK but if I shut down I get the grey screen with Flashing question mark folder.
I have spent two hours getting it to boot into the OS.
I tried safe boot, control + option + p + r, I have unplugged it making sure that only the apple keyboard and mouse are attached. Nothing worked.
I tried about a dozen time to get it to boot from the DVD which it did eventually but then couldn't detect the Hard Disk. Kept on trying eventually did detect the HD ran repair disk reported no problems, repaired permissions and selected the HD to restart which it did now typing this on the machine.
What on earth is going on this machine is less than a year old and I have never had so much as a freeze using Leopard.
Can anyone help I am tearing my hair out!!
    Thanks
PS: I came over from Vista which is beginning to look delightful.

    Steven,
It looks and sounds like you are Savvy.....
You have helped others or you wouldn't have 2 bars under your name...
I assume you have backups or you wouldn't have done 3 complete wipe and reinstalls.
This is the bottom line for me and what I would suggest as long as you have backups...
    1. Wipe the HD clean... erase it.... fresh start....
    2. Insert the Snow Leopard disk and install Snow Leopard only...... Nothing else. Do Not Migrate, etc..
Then give Snow Leopard a try all by itself with nothing of your old stuff or anything else added...
Try shutting down. Try restarting... Try Safari... etc.....
If that works, then something is wrong with something in your prior system or prior files...
Start migrating things over until you find a problem...
I know this may sound like it takes a long time but not really.
Sometimes we need to be like *PIT BULLS*..... don't give up.....
I don't really have any problems at all with Snow Leopard on the computers I have or the ones I have helped my friends upgrade other than a few minor things....

  • HELP!!!!! My hard disk disappeared!!!

I have an internal 120GB ATA drive set as a Master and an internal 18GB SCSI drive set as a slave (this is the drive came installed) and last weekend I bought a CompUSA firewire/USB 2.0 combo PCI adapter (I'm having massive issues with it but that's a different problem entirely.)
After I installed my new card my SCSI drive was not recognized when I restarted my computer. When I open Disk Utility the disk shows in the column to the left but the actual volume does not (nor does it mount on the desktop.)
I tried removing the PCI card to see if that was the problem but I'm still getting the same warning. I'm afraid that something may have been disconnected while opening and closing the case but I'm not sure what it looks like when everything is hooked up properly or if that's even really the problem.
I don't want to erase and reformat the hard drive but I don't know what else I could do. Please help!!
500 MHz Sawtooth G4 (AGP graphics)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.5 GB SDRAM

Hey Jeff, thanks for the info! I had one of the techs where I work install the hard drive for me and it had been working for the past year or so. It worked up until I decided to try and save a few bucks by purchasing a CompUSA brand PCI card while I had my computer disasembled during a move last weekend.
My wife threw away the packaging and receipt so now I'm stuck with it but, oh well, More motivation to get a new MacBook Pro.
I got fed up last night and hook everything back up (I tried pressing all the connections to make sure everything was tight- but like you said, probably not the problem) and when I turned the computer back on the missing drive had reappeared!!
Thanks for taking the time to make a suggestion though!

  • Time Capsule Hard Disk Disappears from Windows 7 PC without changing anything on the PC, then reappears for no reason. Any Ideas what would cause this?

Now spent hours trying to fix this problem. I am using a disk password, When I go into the explorer, around 1/4 of the time the timecapsule appears in the browse, and the other 3/4's it can not be found. I can leave the pc, then come back after a while and the disk is back.

i'd also like to add that the time capsule is still recognised on the mac partition of my macbook pro, and also both mac and windows xp (as a network drive) on my iMac!

  • 2nd HARD DISK DISSAPPEARED..HELP!!!!!

someone PLEASE help me...i have 2 years of data on this disk.
My 2nd hard disk disappeared from my desktop and Finder. I see it in Disk Utility, nad verified it and says everything is ok. This all happenned when i creatd a user account under my admin, and i changed the "ownership nad permissions" on that 2nd user to NO ACCESS. I guess something messed up. After i selected NO ACCESS on that 2nd user, i went back to my admin account, nad i couldn't access the disk there. i tried cahnging the disk to READ WRITE in my admin, but it wouldn't change, kept being no access. 20 minutes later after messing around, the disk is GONE from desktop and Finder....HOW DO I GET IT BACK?
thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

SO, i did this and it worked
Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and enter /Volumes/ as the folder's location. Next, open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder while keeping the Volumes folder open. Type the following into the window:
    chmod 755
followed by a space. Drag the volume in question into the Terminal window and press Enter. Log out and back in, and see if the drive reappears on your desktop
Now, my question is....how do i do what i want to do? How do i get my second user (standard) to not see or simply not be able to use the 2nd hard disk, while me, admin, of course can see the 2nd hard drive.

  • Lost Partition of my Hard Disk

    Hi,
a while ago i was trying to copy documents from my hard disk but it wouldn't
so i searched online and i found that i can just partition the hard disk one for IOS and one for Android
eventually when i did it everything on my hard disk disappeared!
so is there a way to get it back?
i hope somebody would help me because the files are very valuable to me.

Unfortunately, the way most “file recovery” utilities work is to reallocate the disk sectors that are indicated to have previously belonged to a file as indicated by what appears to have been a directory block in reformatted partition. That does not mean that the disk sectors referred to weren't modified in some way in the interim. If some other file or files used these sectors in the interim, you are pretty much out of luck.
The best way to “recover” your PDF files is to access those files from you backup media. You do backup your system on a fairly regular basis, don't you?

  • Hard disk memory disappearing

    hi
i have a power book G4 running panther OSX 10.3.9 about 4 years old but the hardrive is only 2 years old.
it's memory filled up recently so i removed 3 gigs worth of memory. i then downloaded a pdf form only for all the free memory to disappear. so i cleaned out more memory about 1.4 gigs worth only for that to disappear as well. is this a virus or a consequence of running the computer with hardly any memory.
any ideas will be greatfully received

    Hi Zacster!
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much free space is available?
To find that info, click once on the Hard Drive icon to highlight it.
Press the Command + I keys to Get Info.
    What is displayed for:
    Capacity: ?
    Available: ?
    Used: ?
As Thomas Bryant posted, insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data.
Depending on Mac system usage habits, it is a general recommendation, to keep 10% to as much as 20%, of the Total capacity, available at all times.
Review the suggestions, in the documents that I have linked to below.
    Authored by Dr Smoke:

Have you ever run any routine Maintenance procedures, as suggested in the articles linked to below?
Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System Maintenance, authored by Gulliver
Maintaining Mac OS X, authored by Dr Smoke
Is the Mac shutdown overnight, or does it run 24/7?
If you turn the Mac off nightly, the Background Maintenance Tasks, are never run.
These can also be run, using a Third-Party utility, or manually using Terminal, to run the CRON Commands.
    I use MacJanitor, when necessary.
INSTRUCTIONS TO RUN CRON MANUAL COMMANDS
    Quit all applications/programs.
Navigate to HD > Applications > Utilities.
Double click on Terminal, to open.
    At the prompt, type:
    sudo periodic daily
    Press Return.
Enter your Admin password when prompted, then press Return.
This will execute the daily script that is sheduled to run every night.
When completed, repeat this procedure, but change the command to:
    sudo periodic weekly
This one rebuilds a database or two, and usually takes somewhat longer to complete. It is scheduled to run once a week.
    Repeat again, with command:
    sudo periodic monthly
Or they can all be run in one pass, which is preferable, with this command:
    sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
When the tasks complete, and return to the prompt, you may quit Terminal.
Restart the Mac, and run Repair Permissions.
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk in the left column.
    2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP, until the only messages reported, are listed here Spurious Permissions Errors Using: 10.3.x, authored by Michael Conniff.
When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".

  • Why is my available hard disk space disappearing?

    Hi,
Occasionally my hard disk space will start disappearing for no apparent (to me) reason.  I'll have 15 gigs of available hard disk space that will disappear, and I'll get messages that I'm running out of disk space, interfering with what I'm doing.
After I restart my computer, it seems to reset, but I would like to stop it altogether (as, obviously, it's not always convenient to restart my computer in the middle of tasks.)
I tried Disk Utility, but it didn't find anything.  Are there any other legit programs I should use to solve this and other general issues?
Or is it something I could fix myself (with only basic computer knowledge)?
    Thanks!

Where were you downloading the to,   iPhoto, a folder on the Desktop, where? Are they still on the camera's memory card?  If you deleted them from the card and haven't used the card since they can be recovered with recovery software like  MediaRECOVER. You can download the demo version to verify they can be recovered before purchasing it.  Other similar apps can be found at MacUpdate.com by searching for "photo recovery" or similar terms.

  • Hard drive disappears and Disk Utility is not finding it

I woke my computer up from sleep this morning, launched Final Cut Pro and it threw me an error. It said there was a permissions error for one of the volumes FCP was using, then my hard drive disappeared.
It does not show up in Disk Utility, nor does it appear in System Profiler.
I took the SATA drive out of my Mac Pro and tried to mount it using an external SATA to USB dock. It spins and sounds ok, but still won't mount.
Anything I can do to revive this drive?

all of this pretty clearly indicates that the drive is dead. get a new one.

    Hello,
I was working on a project located at a library in an external hard disk. The external hard disk was disconnected while FCPX was rendering. Once it was connected back there's no project in the event, I can't find it in Finder nor anywhere else and I get a yellow triangular exclamation sign icon. Has the project disappeared? Is there a way to find it? I have no backup

  • Disappearing Hard Disk Space

For several days, I have watched my available hard disk space "disappear" before my eyes. I should have approximately 13 GB of free space available, but this number has gradually dropped to zero and then back up to 6 GB and currently hovers around 2-3 GB. This has happened over the last 3-4 days. I don't recall installing any new software, drivers, etc. A virus scan detected no viruses. Disk Utility detected no problems. System Profiler logs don't seem to show any processes that are unusually large and consuming. Where did my hard drive space go and how can I get it back?
