PB G4 12'' - No/Dead Display

So, I've got this Powerbook that I'm trying to get working. The display is completely dead, as far as I can see. It's not cracked, but nothing appears on it when I turn on the computer. The backlight does not turn on either. It gives the comforting Mac chime on power up, then just does nothing (but I assume it is booting normally).
I figured that the screen was possibly dead or the connection to the logic board could be bad. After tearing it down, I examined the connection to the logic board. It looked good, but I pulled it off and reset it...still nothing. I happened to have another PB display, so I plugged it in, and got nothing again. The main cable going to the logic board is the only thing that I need to plug in to power up the screen, right? That's the only cable I plugged in when testing the other screen, so I hope the bluetooth and airport wiring doesn't need to be hooked up that runs through the display....I don't see why it would need to be.
So, I'm left to assume it's a bad video card, meaning the logic board is pretty much trashed. Any other ideas?

Do you happen to have access to an Apple Store? They would have all that stuff there. You could make an appointment at the genius bar. I would say to run the Apple Hardware Test, but you obviously can't with no display.
If no Apple Store, is there a Mac users club or anything like that? You might be able to borrow the cable you need.
There's also this article that might be helpful, especially if you have the original discs:

Good luck!

  • How can I get a MacBook with a dead display to display to an HDMI monitor upon bootup?

I have a MacBook with a dead display that I'd like to use as a desktop.  I also have a 23" monitor with VGA and HDMI input.  I am using the DVI adapter on the MacBook, and a DVI to HDMI converter to connect to the monitor.  The problem is that when it boots, it's extending the desktop over onto the monitor rather than mirroring or using that as the primary display, which is unhelpful.
Is there a way to get it to use the external HDMI monitor as the primary?
Do I need to buy a mimi-DVI to VGA adapter to accomplish this?
I know this works if I connect the MacBook to a monitor with DVI input.  The problem is that my only options are VGA or HDMI for my current monitor.
    Thanks!

Yes. Use a Mini DisplayPort to dual-link DVI adapter.

  • Hardware test and dead display

Hi all. Does anyone have a way of running the hardware test on a MBP with a dead display card? External displays will not work either. Everything else works, but I can't see what I'm doing to run the test. It's probably the Nvidia issue, but I'd like to poke around a bit.
    Jeremy

Very likely it is the NVIDIA issue:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
Apple has a test they can run, but I don't know of one you can run without a working video chip.
    Good luck!

  • Emac with dead display

Hi guys. I was lucky enough to pick up a triplet of eMacs yesterday. one of them is a 700mhz model that was working until the power button tore off. The other two I was told were 1ghz models, but the CD tray reports 1.25ghz (woohoo!!)
The one is in pieces, and the thermal pipe is too bent for me to fix it, so I am focusing on the one that is together. It chimes, I get the white light, and using my aluminum keyboard, I am able to make the volume pop, and eject the drive, so I know it is fully booted. I tried the brightness buttons, but they have no effect.
The display does make a crackling noise when it comes on like the 700mhz model, but nothing comes up, and I don't get the static feel from the front glass like I can on other monitors. There is however a quick flash of light in the upper left corner of the monitor. it only happens once, and only for a second.
The machine is sadly not covered under the repair program, since the serial number does not match with the ones in the program. However, and what is odd, the last 3 digits of the serial number do not match with the Apple KB on how to identify your eMac, and the configuration is an odd one: 1.25ghz/256mb/40gb/CD. According to mactracker, the 1.25ghz model only came with a combo or superdrive. Also, this model, like the other 2, does not have a modem, even though the port symbol is still there. I got these from a school, so that would explain that.
If I brought this in to an apple store, do you think they would be able to do anything with it, or does anyone know what the problem is so I could fix it myself? In my mind, it is worth it, and would make a fine replacement for my battle weary B&W G3. I have been looking for a faster machine that can run leopard, and this is it. If I can't get it fixed, I might just end up buying a mini VGA adapter and use it with my LCD, but I was hoping to get the higher than 1024x768 resolution of the built in CRT.

Thanks for all the help. I got a 3rd 1.25ghz mac, a consumer model with a bad motherboard with leaked capacitors. I was told it had a bad tube, but I swapped in the mobo from the one that sounded like it was booting fully, and tada!! a much newer mac than my B&W G3 for free!! I even got a modem out of it from the dead motherboard. Not that I will need it anytime soon, but you never know. it went in the machine just in case.
I am now in the process of reassembling the 700mhz and hopefully I will have 2 eMacs. I hope the shell from the 1.25ghz will work, even though there are 2 fewer screws. It does fit, and it is my only shell with a working power button at this point.
About the only issue is the tube is kinda pink when she first boots (the grey screen with the apple logo has a light pink hue to it), but it goes away after a few minutes. I hope that does not mean it's dying. The machine also seems to take quite a long time to power up. About 20 seconds from the time I press the power button until I get anything on the screen. Must need to warm up, but coming out of sleep mode, the screen is up in less than 5 seconds.

  • IBook with dead display (i think)?

Hi, I have an ibook that needs desperate help.
I was having problems with it in October last year with the carbonlib which i posted about here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=738743#738743
Before i managed to try to update the carbonlib it crashed and since october i have been unable to boot the machine at all. I just bought the Dual G4 Powermac before christmas which was just £250 on eBay (bargain of the year) and added ram and got the PCI USB 2.0 card* from a Windoze box runnning in it. OK so now i can fix the iBook (i hope).
All i get is the startup tone and all the regular noises (hard disk, etc) until it attempts to load the grey apple and the spinning icon when all i get on the screen is a brief flash of some dark grey horizontal bars then back to a black screen.
The iBook seems to keep loading for a few seconds after this but then just goes dead with a black screen. I've also tried booting from my original OS install CDs and from my new Tiger DVD but with the exact same results only with CD drive activity for a short while instead of hard disk.
I've tried loading it using the hardware test CD which gets the Screen to flash a second time onto a more solid looking grey screen but again only for a fraction of a second.
I think it looks like the graphics chip is somehome not responding but the resto the machine is fine. ANY suggestions will help as i'm stumped and don't have applecare anymore so its going to be very expensive i suspect.
    Thanks
    SEB
*(incidentally it is an ALI chipset with three rear ports (on the card) and three front ones which fit nicely in instead of the zip drive. I had massive problems with the card and atatched devices with the supplied drivers, so i did an archive and install and simply let Tiger deal with the card and now the only problem is my Video iPod wont connect to the USB 2 ports (a common one i've seen), however i am running a d-link DWL-122 wireless adapter, a standard usb bluetooth adapter, a canon i350 printer, a HP635 digital camera, and an external 2.5in USB 2.0 hard disk (the original 30GB disk from my ibook that lost its S.M.A.R.T status but still works) in various combinations and at full speed for each device. Hope thats usefull to someone too)

Wow how stupid do i feel, almost 8 weeks and all i had to do was reset the PRAM properly!!!! I though i was competent with a mac but it just goes to show! - measure twice cut once!! I'm just watching it through an archive and install and we should be operational.

Still... i've got a powermac now that i probably wouldn't have got if my ibook hadn't been out of service.

  • Dead Display MEGA180

    Hi there,
I have a problem and I hope someone has the answer.
After running the 'welcome' utility, the lcd on my MEGA 180 has died. I've tried powering off and on, including removing the power cord, but still there's nothing.
When I try and run the welcome utility now, I get a message 'Cannot find MEGA PC radio module'.
Has anyone had the same problem ? and fixed it ?
    Greetz

After having an email conversation with MSI for almost a week. They finally realise the problem and say I must return my unit as there is no antidote utility. They say not to install any software with the disk that they give you with the TV Tuner card, not even the TV Tuner drivers. There is no documentation about this, so I guess they are going to finish up with a big pile of faulty LCD units.
I will be sending it back tomorrow and hope I get the same one back, but fixed, as everything else was running so well appart from the LCD

  • Thunderbolt Display "dead" after firmware upgrade to Version 1.2

    Hi,
I just run the Thunderbolt F/W update to 1.2 as offered by the AppStore Update. I have a 2014 MacPro with 2 Displays connected. In good faith I just confirmed to apply the update without much reading the fine print. The F/W update brought the system to a complete standstill. After 2 hours of waiting in the boot screen, I rebooted the system manually (5 secs power button). One of the Thunderbolt displays first just flickered, then decided to completely die. The System report says: unknown device in the Thunderbolt section. The 2nd display hasn't been updated during this procedure.
How can the F/W of the 'dead' display be re-installed? I also tried to connect it to a MacBook pro. Same result. The display is entirely black.
Any help or suggestion is much appreciated. Thanks!

Put me on the list as well.
I've had this TB display for two years and have had no issue with it. Clicked OK on the firmware prompt and now I have a $1000 paperweight/laptop charger.
    What I have tried:
Reset SMC and NVRAM on my MBP.
Unplugged the display from power and all peripherals and let it sit for ~24 hours before trying again.
Downloaded the firmware installer from Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update v1.2. It tells me that no thunderbolt display is connected.
So far nothing has produced a result.
System report shows an unknown device on the TB port.
A used logic board for the display is around USD$220 on ebay.
I really wish I had not attempted to install the firmware now.

  • Dead screen for 3555b

I have a dead display screen on my Nokia 3555b & need someone to walk me through the steps to connect either the USB port or bluetooth to transfer the data from the phone's memory to my PC.  Thanks... Dean.

unfortunately, there is not really a way to do this with precision. if you do need to have your screen replaced, your best bet is to take your phone to your local Nokia Care Centre for them to take a look at. they may be able to assist you with the recovery of personal data from your phone.
please throw some kudos our way, it would mean a lot to us
If you found this or someone's comments helpful or like what that person has to say, please give some Kudos to their post!

  • LCD display..amongst others...

I have some problems with my MEGA 180...sad to say...
Overall i´ve got most of it to work..(WiFi, Cardreader, USB).
But the LCD doesn´t work at all...it never blinked or attempted to blink...
The sound doesn´t seem to work either...and also the remote doesn´t do anything.
There is no troubleshooting guide or anything off use that could help me in the box.
I´ve looked at the FAQ and through the forum with no luck whatsoever.
I think it´s busted but it could be I accidently pulled something out of it´s socket while installing the hardware into the case...(CPU, MEM, TV-Card, HDD)...
I´ve already send an email to MSI techsupport. But had no answer yet accept for the standard received email. Has anybody had the same problems........ Do I return it or is it possible to fix it......????
    thanks in advance....

A couple of things to check:
If you had the covers off the unit, there is a front panel connector behind the Radio module JFP1, make sure its seated properly, also I have had the system perform erraticly, IE LCD [Actually LED] display not working/properly/blank, and by pulling the plug on the unit, and repowering, it should go through a reset, all segements should flash as a test mode, then everything worked fine.
You haven't run the Welcome.exe program by any chance? There is fix listed elsewhere for the results of that problem. [Blank/Dead Display]

  • 23" Display  Power cord solution

Suddenly my display wouldn't work! After reading several posts about the dreaded dead display, I decided to change the power cord. Although I had never looked at it, I thought it would be an expensive replacement. Much to my surprise, it turns to be a standard D-plug. Slapped the "new" cord into the power supply and viola! My display is up and running. I hope this helps anyone with the sudden loss of the big screen.
    LarMan

So I still haven't had this happen to me since I changed things around in my prefs, and it was happening before that usually twice a week. I posted a couple of images of my settings here http://homepage.mac.com/reaction/mactree/PhotoAlbum6.html
I doubt it's solving the problem, but somehow it is preventing it from happening. I read that you had tried one of these settings and it didn't work for you, so it's hard to know.. though I'm sure we're experiencing the same problem.
Also, I upgraded my graphics card to the x1900 and if I remember correctly, my mac was doing the same thing with the previous stock card.
thanks for the update on your situation

  • Keyboard or terminal commands to change display settings?

I have a circa 2007 Macbook Pro with a nearly dead display.  The top two thirds of it is dead.  I think it's running Snow Leopard.  When I attach a RGB external display it shows the background and I can drag windows to it, but I cannot seem to move the System Preferences window to a place where I can access the Dislays control panel.  Does anyone know of a way to change the display settings so that the main desktop is mirrored on both displays or how I can grab the System Prefs window and drag it to the other display?

Try the keyboard combo: CMD + F1 (or OPT +CMD + F1) to toggle mirroring.

  • Thunderbolt display just stays blank

    Hi,
I bought a brand new MBP 15" retina and a thunderbolt display about a month ago and since day 2 the after I shut down and disconnect the MBP and the reconnect the MBP the next day the display just stays black but the fan works and it provides power to the MBP via magsafe and can't be found on the MBP. I brought it back to the vendor and there everything just worked fine. Back at my place the same issue happened again after about a wee. After lengthy calls with apple support I still was not able to get it working and took it to the authorized service provider; there again everything just worked fine. that was 3 day ago now today gain the same issue.
Last night at home I used the MBP with out the and this morning again it is just black, provides power and fans are running.
I am really frustrated and would welcome any suggestions.
    Thanks
    II

for those who have nothing to loose - no warranty - no Apple care etc.
I had a dead display before yesterday no warranty and 900 km to the closest Apple Store.
So I decided to call a friend - now my display is working again.
The problem was the power supply in my case - it got stuck in protection mode after one of the capacitors died.
So, we took the thing out and works without it. Apparently is enough to have a working one.
All back to normal for now. Happy to get this fixed. It cost me 20 bucks plus beer.
    See the attachement for details.
Be carefull when you open the monitor - the power supply might be charged long before unppluged.
    Use patience, and propper tools.

    Thank you mich41!
It looks like a kernel bug.
I downgraded to 3.7.10-1 then firmware loaded OK and I could play sounds.
Upgraded to 3.8.6-1 then the firmware fail to load.
Something looks not ok with 3.8.6-1.
    Best regards,
    Christer

  • Mid-2010 Mac Mini -  black screen after installing boot camp drivers

I successfully installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 on my new Mac Mini. The display worked without issue in XP at this point.
After doing this, I proceeded to install the boot camp drivers. They installed and automatically rebooted the machine.
After reboot, Windows XP no longer has a functioning display. The display is a black screen and eventually the monitor shuts off.
    Things I've tried:
    - Reset PRAM
    - Reset SMC
    - Tried both Mini DisplayPort and HDMI connections to connect to the HDMI port on the monitor
    - Booting into Safe Mode. Holding down F8 successfully brought up the Safe Mode options, but again the display was blank after choosing the Safe Mode option and attempting to load Windows.

Update: Other stuff I've now tried--
    - Swapping out RAM modules. I've tried it with the stock 2GB sticks in place, also with a single 4GB stick. Same result.
    Other interesting/troubling problems:
    - Unable to boot into Safe Mode with command line. The text-only interface with safe mode options that is reached by pressing F8 during windows startup is displayed. However, no matter which option I choose, the result is a dead display.
    - Unable to boot with Windows XP install CD (?!). After choosing the CD at the boot selection screen, the display blanks and never wakes up.
