PB G4 15inch crashed during backup - wont start up

Hi
My PowerBook G4 15 inch has been doing well except for the fact that it wont hold a charge at all.
Yesterday it made a weird noise which sounded like the noise it makes when loading a DVD but maybe a bit louder. I restarted - moved a window on the finder and the noise started again. I hooked up a drive and started backing up my files. ABout halfway through the backup it froze with drive sound now continuous grinding kind of noise.
I shut down, disconnected drive, and tried to restart - stuck on grey screen with spinning symbol underneath, no matter what I try, noise intermittent doesn't seem to correspond to anything I'm doing.
I just want to back up res tof my files before trying something more drastic.
I tried :
PRAM reset
PMU reset
starting computer up as target disk to a G5
Also tried to get an Apple Hardware Test CD in there but only a text file on it - huh ??!
Maybe my CD s too old - cant find the more recent one.
Went to this link to download/burn CD of the Hardware test, but again, open the dmg and only a text file in there ?????? http://www.info.apple.com/support/aht.html
Also tried to boot from a Data Rescue CD - I insert the disk while grey screen is up, restart holding down C, and it spits it out, keeps spinning grey...
Then tried holding down option instead of C and it got as far as the blue screen where it lets you select what drive to start from - showed me the HD, but no CD - then spit out the CD.
I selected the HD, let it continue, and it got as far as the spinning blue screen, then went to the plain blue screen, got the arrow cursor, and there it stopped. Noise continues intermittently - put my ear up to it and I can hear the hard drive doing its regular start up kind of noises.
Any ideas ? Anything I haven't tried yet ?

Hardware test is not loadable from the operating system. You must boot the disc directly using these instructions:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA27043
I have a hunch though the hard drive has begun to die. Try a data recovery utility if the test can't find anything wrong. See my FAQ* for data recovery suggestions below:

  • Itunes crashed during backup and I can't get help from apple support on the

    website.
Stupid Itunes crashed on disk 41 of 46 when backing up.
There is no help available on the apple website and no way to request help on the apple website for any issue with Itunes.
How do I fix this problem?
How do I tell Itunes which disks it backup up so it won't try backing them up all over again. Did it destroy a list of what was backed up? What's going on with itunes anyways? Does it always crash when it backs up this many cds? I don't want to start all over again and ruin another 41 CDR disks trying to back it up. How do I get it to continue from where it crashed or do whatever has to be done to get it to resume where it crashed during backup?
Stupid program wouldn't let me do anything after it crashed. said it will take a minute or two (more like forever) to cancel backup. Don't even know why it was trying to cancel the backup. I didn't tell it to.

Apparently there are some bugs in the latest itunes. DO NOT USE ITUNES TO BACKUP YOUR LIBRARY! UNLESS IT COMPLETES THE BACKUP, ITUNES IS NOT SMART ENOUGH TO FIGURE OUT WHICH FILES WERE BACKED UP. TECH SUPPORT DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO MAKE ITUNES KNOW WHAT FILES WERE BACKED UP SO IT CAN CONTINUE FROM WHERE IT LEFT OFF. AFTER 41 CDS WORTH OF BACKUPS, ITUNES CRASHED AND IT TRIED TO CANCEL THE BACKUP BUT NEVER FINISHED DOING THAT.
SO AFTER 60 CDS WORTH AND ABOUT 6 HOURS OF WASTED TIME, THE ONLY WAY IS TO BACKUP THE ENTIRE LIBRARY ALL OVER AGAIN WHICH IS A TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY, TIME, AND CDS WITH NO GUARANTEE THAT IT WILL WORK ANY BETTER THE SECOND TIME AROUND.
EVEN TRYING TO RESTORE FROM CDS DOESN'T TELL ITUNES TO UPDATE ITS LIST OF BACKED UP FILES. I'M SURPRISED THAT SUCH A BIG BLUNDER WITH ITUNES HAS GONE UNNOTICED.
ITS A SERIOUS ENOUGH ISSUE THAT SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT IT. I BACKED UP MY ITUNES TO HD AND THERE WERE NO PROBLEMS SO OBVIOUSLY ITS AN ITUNES ISSUE.
NEEDLESS TO SAY, ITS A VERY ANNOYING PROBLEM TO PUT SO MUCH TIME AND EFFORT INTO GETTING NOWHERE.

  • IPhone crashes during backup before 1.1.2 update installation

My iPhone is crashing during the beginning of the backup phase before installing v1.1.2. It will freeze up my phone, disconnect from iTunes, & eventually restart again.
I have it plugged into a USB 2.0 port and there are no bent pins. I have Bluetooth and WiFi OFF. I closed all other open applications on my computer including iPhoto. I am currently running MAC OS X 10.4.11 and using the newest version of iTunes (v7.5).
What are my other options do I have to resolve this issue?

My iPhone does the same thing.
By comparison, my iPod has no trouble with syncing contacts,
photos, etc. but when attempting to update the iPhone,
it starts the backup phase as seen in the iTunes window,
the iPhone screen is dark. Then suddenly, the phone will beep,
its screen flashes, and we get a gray apple on the iPhone screen.
I have tried eliminating the dock. Tried two separate USB cables,
and tried the update from two different computers. Always the same result.
I have not tried to restore the iPhone, as I do not want to lose
all the phone call information. It seems to be working ok at the 1.1.1
    SW level.

  • Instance crash during backup

What should I one do when instance crashes during user-managed hot backup?
    Bounce the instance?
    Message was edited by:

What should I one do when instance crashes during user-managed hot backup? well, you can try this...
When u started user managed backup, I assume that you put tablespace in backup mode...
    ALTER TABLESPACE tablespace_name BEGIN BACKUP;
Now you use o/s copy commands to copy the associated datafiles.
and if instance crashes during hot backup...then the backup u made till then would be useless.
when u restart the Instance, it wouldn't open the database because the tablespace (all associated datafiles) would be in Backup mode (header SCN frozen; inconsistent with control file)....so all you need is to take the tablespace (associated datafiles) out of backup mode by....
ALTER DATABASE END BACKUP; --all datafiles which were in backup mode will come out of this mode.
    or
ALTEAR DATABASE DATAFILE datafile_name END BACKUP; -- to get individual datafile out of backup mode....
(how to check which datafiles are in backup mode???
use a view called V$DATAFILE_HEADER....the value of column FUZZY would be YES for the datafiles in backup mode...)
Now start the instance and open the database
I hope it would work fine...
    Cheers

  • Time Machine crashing during backup

I have been having issues with TM for the past 2-3 days. It worked fine for the past year and has suddenly stopped working and generating errors after every attempt. I have verified, repaired permissions on both my internal HD and the Lacie 1 TB external drive (partitioned into 2x500G, one for TM and one for media). I have also erased the partition and resetup TM but still no luck. The backup seems to fail after copying 1.8GB of data of 178 GB. I have attached a copy of the log from Time Machine Buddy.
    Thanks for any help.

Going to give the hardware test a run to see what it comes back with. I am quite confused as I am not seeing any other issues with the computer.
I have been working on computers for years and still do it for a living and can't figure this out for the life of me (The reason I use a mac is because I deal with PC issues all day long). I honestly am considering doing the actual complete wipe and reinstall even though its probably not going to help. I'm at a loss here and its frustrating because I deleted all my old backups as I originally thought it was the HD causing the problem and tried formatting the drive.
Thanks for all your help...Your assistance here is invaluable and you are great at articulating troubleshooting steps.

  • Windows backup wont start on windows 7 home premium

I have been trying to start my windows backup utility on windows 7. It starts to the loading screen that says Starting windows backup, wait while windows backup starts. It stays on this screen indefinitely as i have left the machine run for days on end
waiting for it to start or error out. Any clues as to what this may be caused by, or how to fix it?

follow this document for Windows 7 backup

how much space at target volume? external HDD? USB pen drive?
i suggest using external HDD, USB pen drive will takes forever
or you can also try using 3rd party application, but its our own risk and fully support comes from manufactured

  • Upgraded to Firefox 8.0 crashed and now wont start up.

Upgraded Firefox to 8.0 last night and it crashed as soon as it finished and I went to open it. I had no problem with it before this update. Tried taking my computer back in time didn't work also tried uninstalling and reinstalling accept it wont reinstall now. Go to hit run and get nothing to pop up after that. I loved firefox I hate Internet explorer someone help me fix this so I can use FF again. It seems this is a big problem with 8.0 so there has to be a fix.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • Is there a way to recover data in the event of a crash during backup?

I've been busy with schoolwork so I just got around to updating my iOS from 6.1.3 to 7.1.1. As all of you probably know, it was a much needed update since some apps stop working on older iOS versions. I first updated iTunes which was also out-dated. After restarting my PC I then connected my iPad and clicked the update button. As iTunes began to backup my iPad, it encountered and error (it didn't specify) and apparently lost communication with the iPad. The iPad was frozen. I am assuming it was waiting for iTunes. I tried re-inserting the USB but the device no longer registered with my computer. The only thing I was able to do was turn off the iPad but that put it into recovery mode. iTunes was then able to communicate with the iPad but insisted that it must be restored to factory settings. Since it was reset to factory settings, iTunes then asked if I wanted to set it up as a new iPad or restore from a backup. The problem is that for the same reason it has taken me so long to update iOS, I have also not created backup for the past 14 months. Is there a way to recover the data that was on the iPad or has the last 14 months been lost in manner of minutes?

If iTunes does not recognize the iPod
    put it into recovery mode
    See here
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipodtouch/assistant/restore/
    Then restore

i cant make a new partition , and i cant make an image
    please help

    I fully agree with BDAqua.
Don't do anything with this Mac until you have an external disk which you can boot your Mac from.
Not all USB disks are easy to boot from - FireWire is better
When you have a suitable empty external disk I advise:
Put install DVD into damaged Mac
partitioning external disk into 2 volumes
install OS onto one volume of external disk
Don't import anything during install process - it may reintroduce historic problems
    Boot external disk
Use finder to copy critical data from Mac to volume of external disk with OS
Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the whole Mac hard disk to the other external volume
Boot into installer DVD and erase Mac's internal disk
Partition internal disk into 2 volumes and install OSs as required

My iPhone has crashed during a sync and now I can't restore from backup as it is asking for password to load the backup yet neither the lock code for the phone or my iTunes Password are working... I have no other password to call upon and need the restore to retrieve info onto my phone, I am a real novice to this...... please help, !!!!

If anyone else is looking for a solution to this same problem, I was able to get it working looking through several older discussions.
The solution was to use the password that I had on my iTunes account the very first time I set up the iPhone about a year ago.  I changed my iTunes password about 10 months ago;  but apparently, the backups continue to use the password that existed when the phone was first set up.
A couple of troubling things with this are that 1) I didn't apply a password when I did the backup this afternoon so I don't understand why it was required when I did the restore a few hours later. and 2) it makes zero sense why iTunes would not be smart enough to use the current accout password when requiring the password to restore from a backup made with no password.
I thought iTunes and Apple were smarter than that.  With so many posts stating exactly the same problem, it is clear that this is bug in the software.
    Best,
    Craig

  • ITunes crashing during start up

My iTunes keeps crashing during the start up phase. The iTunes window will start running, but as soon as the "Genius is checking your library" status bar starts running, it crashes unexpectedly.

...let me clarify...does anyone, have a fix that doesn't require the loss of all the information on my phone? Or know if a new update to IOS 7.2 is coming out with a fix to this?
I was asking for HELP and didn't think I was being abrasive, but some people/trolls have a tendency to read into things, and since you ask, my underwear is good to go - no knots or twists in them, thanks.
To those with constructive feedback; the car settings are where they're supposed to be. It's a new touch-screen panel for Hyundai Sonata. It was installed 2 weeks ago, they are new factory parts and system, the car system was rebooted. Then from factory settings phone has been paired and enabled it plays the music just fine, but since I updated to the ew IOS, the controls don't work. Now, on the phone itself, it has current IOS 7.2, powered down and restarted. You can't delete the iTunes Store or ITunes music app, so I checked the settings. They're also where they need to be for pairing and play. The iTunes Store crashes upon startup. I can't even get into it. I was mistaken before in my previous posting in saying that pressing the home button on the home screen twice, brought up the music controls. It doesn't. In IOS 6 version, it did. The new IOS 7.2 doesn't seem to be hands-free friendly for drivers - not like it used to be.
Phone was powered down and restarted. Under General tab in settings, all settings were reset with no change to iTunes app and Music store issues. Then powered down again. Nothing. If there is a fix for the mentioned glitches in an update, that would be great. If anyone knows of anything else, please share. Thanks.

  • IPhoto crashes during start

I cannot start iPhoto anymore. It crashes during start.
I'm using an iMac with 10.6.4.
I have tried to re-install the software (first removing the iPhoto and relevant files in /var/db/receipts/) without any success.
    Any suggestions?

    The reason for the crash

Should be sorted out by a reinstall - after deleting the receipt.
But I note that crash reporter doesn't now what version you are using:

    What version is this?
