PB G4 display is Pink after sleep

Hello
suddenly my powerbook g4 titanium screen has a pink haze over it when 1st wakes from sleep. seems to be getting worse quick. i havnt seen this since my 1st crt monitor way back in '93.
any thoughts?
replies to this message will be emailed to me.
Thanks
wayne

The pink seems to be a product of the aging of the fluorescent backlight tube, which is located at the bottom of the display. As it gets older, the backlight tube is slower and slower to reach full brightness and normal color temperature after it's been off. Eventually, in at least some cases, it loses the ability altogether. A screensaver doesn't turn the backlight off, so it doesn't bring on the problem. Sleep turns off the backlight, so the problem does appear after sleep, or after any event that dims the backlight considerably for more than a few seconds.
To verify this, dim your screen with the F1 key until only one brightness increment is showing at the lower end of the scale. Leave it that way for a minute or two, then bring the brightness rapidly up to full with the F2 key. If you've been seeing pink after sleep, you'll see pink when doing this.
I don't know whether backlight aging is accelerated by always using the display at full brightness or ******** by using it at a lower setting whenever possible, but it wouldn't surprise me to learn that there's a relationship there.
Powerbook display assemblies are glued together — for the sake of greater rigidity, I presume — and are not meant to be disassembled. This makes replacing the backlight tube or any other component inside the display bezel very difficult: difficult enough so that when anything goes bad inside, Apple replaces the whole display instead. It is possible to dismantle the display and replace individual components, then glue it back together again, but the process is so labor-intensive (see one man's well-documented procedure here), and carries such a high risk of causing at least cosmetic damage, that I suspect few professional service departments will undertake it — and it won't be cheap in any case.
If you have nothing to lose, a source of good used display parts or whole displays you can cannibalize, and plenty of time, you can try replacing your own backlight. But be aware that you'll have to disassemble your Powerbook completely. Most of that is child's play compared to separating the display casing parts, but any way you look at it it's a big, complex job.

  • Lenovo Ideapad U410: Display not working after sleep and/or restart

    Hello all,
I am recently having some inconsistent display issues with my Lenovo U410 laptop i7 1TB with a Windows 8 PRO upgrade (came with windows 7).
When I press the Power Button on my laptop to put it to sleep, the Screen turns black as if it is off, but the Power & Battery LEDs on the front of the laptop remain on, as well as the LED on the power button.  However, when I try to wake my laptop, there is no response on the screen (remaining black as if it is off).  The internal fan is running, however I receive no feedback when "blindly" trying to input my password.
I've tried to turn the power off and back on to no avail.  I've also removed the power source and held the power button for a couple of seconds and that did not solve the issue either. I've tried connecting the laptop to a screen via HDMI (since there is no other AV port on the device), but there was no signal being sent through.
This is an inconsistent issue that began yesterday 6/11/2013.  When the laptop is left alone for a little and is turned on again, the display works, but after closing the lid (sleep) or pressing the button, the display fails to turn on upon awakening.
In most recent circumstances, Today (6/12/2013) I was installing a Windows update that required my computer to restart.  When the update configured perfectly BEFORE it was restarting, but AFTER the restart, my internal fan began to work, but the display was not on.
Does anybody or Tech support know what may cause this inconsistent behavior?  or know any solutions to this issue?

I am facing similar problem - post sleep & sometimes on touchpad event - the screen gets stuck & a strange array of gray screen comes or the existing screen's colors get distorted & the laptop gets stuck.
model - Lenovo U410; 64 Bit; Windows 7 Home basic;,  Intel core i5 processor
I have upgraded display drivers but that hasn't changed anything. Any help is appreciated.

  • Display is offset after sleep

I have a Mac Mini connected to a Panasonic projector using a DVI-HDMI cable. Everything works perfectly after a fresh boot, but if the Mini ever goes to sleep and wakes back up, the display is shifted to the right about 50 pixels. No amount of messing with the display settings makes any difference. The only way to get it to go back is to reboot. Does anyone have any suggestion?

So that eliminates the possibility the Mac somehow had two similar but different timings in its look up table. You mentioned that no amount of messing with display settings makes any difference. I assume that means switching to an alternate resolution and then switching back to the desired one, correct?
What about changes from the projector? If you power cycle the projector does it come back on with the video centered? Or how about changing away from the input on the projector and cycling back to it? And what happens if you fresh boot the mini so the image is centered and then power cycle the projector or switch away and back to the input without first putting the mini to sleep? Does the image remain centered in that case?

  • A1038 Cinema Display doesnt wake after sleep

I picked up an Apple cinema display A1038 for real cheap with hopes to make it a second monitor for my 2011 mac mini. I hooked it up to my G4 powermac to test, until I get the correct adapters for my mini. It worked when powered on and I ran a movie to see if it would stay on and it did. After the movie was over the computer went to sleep and now it will not wake up, just black screen with the power light on the display blinking occasionally. If I hard reboot the computer the apple loading screen appears and than it goes black. I tried swapping the video card with another one I had laying around but same symptoms. If I unplug the display and unplug the computer for a few mins, everything will start and run fine until the computer sleeps again. I also have a G5 powermac but I haven't tried the display on it yet. Any suggestions?!

The USB circuitry in the display may be failing.  This can interfere with computer sleep functions.   It that's the problem you may be able to use the display successfully when using a DVI to ADC adapter by not connecting the adapter's USB cable to the computer.  You won't be able to use the display's USB ports or control its brightness from the computer.  I have been using my 22" ADC display this way for five years since its USB started causing computer sleep problems.
Be sure to get the Apple version of the DVI to ADC adapter.  Other brands may not work in conjunction with a Mini DisplayPort adapter.

  • My LaCie Firewire 800 hard drive, connected to my Macbook Pro via Thunderbolt Cinema Display port, disconnects after sleep

I have a LaCie RAID Quadra hard drive (two disks in a case set to a redundant array) which for all intents and purporses appears as a normal hard drive to my mac.
When connected directly via FW800 to my Macbook Pro (2011, with thunderbolt port), it works perfectly.
For the sake of convenience, and since I am using it only at home as my Time Machine drive, I connected it to the FW800 port on my Thunderbolt Cinema Display.  The display works perfectly in every way up until now.
When connected, the drive works great.  However, when I put the machine to sleep, upon awakening it, I receive the "Disk improperly ejected" error immediately upon the screen coming up.
The drive is set to Auto mode which has always worked fine in the past; putting the drive to sleep when the computer is asleep, etc.
So, I only receive the disk ejected error when it's plugged into the Cinema Display; not when directly plugged into the MBP.
I have the 1.1 firmware update applied to the monitor.
    Any ideas?  I appreciate it.

My desktop has two FireWire ports. In the first one I had my webcam plugged in. In the second one, the External Hard Drive. I unplugged the camera and used the first port for my External HDrive and now it works! So it seems the problem is a hardware problem with the port.
I'd check to see if the problem returns when you plug the camera back into the second port, or if the drive works in the original port when the camera is not connected.
Edit: Maybe you unplugged the problem, when you unplugged the camera?

  • 2nd display doest work after sleep

So my 2nd display was working fine until i put the computer to sleep. Now it doesnt come back even if i unplug the monitor, power off the monitor then back on, nothig is working, I have to restart the machine.
    thoughts?

Your Dell most likely has multiple inputs. Have you tried setting the current input to DVI?
I have a 24" Dell which allows me to switch between DVI 1, DVI 2, HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA, Component, etc. Your input is probably not the right one.
Also make sure the DVI cable is firmly connected and undamaged.

  • External display resolution changes after returning from display sleep

I often use an external display as a second screen with my Macbook Pro (OS X 10.8.2)  However, when I return to the computer after the display has gone to sleep, the external display resolution changes when the display reappears.  Then I have to go into System Preferences > Display and "Detect Displays" in order to return the external display to the proper resolution.
Does anybody know of a way for me to avoid having to do this every time my display sleeps?
    Thank you,
    Adam

I have the exact same problem.
I found the key combination ⌘ alt F2 also restores the proper resolution on both displays, however it's still a bit annoying

  • No display after sleep with macmini using DVI - S-video/composite under XP

Hi guys, I have installed XP on my mini. I have CRT TV so I'm using
DVI -> S-video/composite to output to my TV.
The problem is after sleep - there is no display (it's woking only after reset).
I installed the latest drivers from the mac os 10.5 DVD & updated the graphics driver from Intel.
    Please help

Unfortunately, no answer, as I'm having the similar problem with a Samsung SyncMaster 215tw and a G4 Mini. It works with the DVI-VGA adapter and the VGA cable into the montor's VGA port. However, connecting with the G$ Mini's DVI port with the monitor's DVI port using a DVI cable doesn't work. I cannot figure out why this doesn't work.
The DVI cable is good and the monitor's DVI port is good, as the connection does work using my friend's Intel Mini's DVI port connected to the monitor's DVI port using the DVI cable.
The monitor is new, too, and otherwise works fine with my other Macs connected with the VGA port. (I've not tried the additional ports as yet.)
Although the monitor is supposed to synchroize automatically, I also tried manually presetting the G4 Mini to different resolutions, but that didn't make any difference. The screen remains black when it should be showing the booting Apple icon.
Any idea what is going wrong here, please, as it sounds as if this same thing occurs with various monitors?

  • 10.9.3 - Display is black after waking up from sleep

I have a Retina MacBook Pro that I connect to two monitors at work in clamshell mode, 1 via HDMI and 1 via the MiniDP -> DVI adapter. Typically, before leaving work I put the machine to sleep manually before unplugging everything.
Since upgrading to 10.9.3, almost everytime I open the lid of my MacBook, the display is black and will never initialize. It's not off as I can see that the backlight is lit. I can't find any key combination that does anything other than just holding down the power button.
This is a serious issue as it essentially prevents me from being able to continue any work from my desk to home.
I've done the usual, cleared SMC, PRAM.
Below are the logs prior to waking up the machine. It seems that it attempted to wake-up some 10 minutes before I opened the lid and didn't find any displays. It then goes into this weird mode.
The 4:28 event is the "wake up" while it was still in my bag.
At 4:41 is me actually opening the lid and getting the black screen.
Any advice? This did not happen in 10.9.2, even once.

Ok, more information for anyone that might care. The wake-up seems to be the familiar dark wake in order to go into hibernate mode. Except now, it's a death wake. Looking at the logs, I see that it happens exactly 70 minutes after sleeping, even though hibernatemode = 0 (which shouldn't hibernate at all!)
So my power settings look like this:
    Currently in use:
    standbydelay         4200
    standby              1
    halfdim              1
    hibernatefile        /var/vm/sleepimage
    darkwakes            0
    gpuswitch            2
    disksleep            10
    sleep                10
    autopoweroffdelay    14400
    hibernatemode        0
    autopoweroff         1
    ttyskeepawake        1
    displaysleep         2
    acwake               0
    lidwake              1
standbymode is 70 minutes, what a coincidence. I'm going to try setting it to 0 and see what that does.

  • MBA not always recognizes external display after sleep

    Hi,
I have a 2011 MBA and use it on a external display (Dell 2709w) with the lid open. The issue with this MBA is that after sleep it often (every second time I wake it up) doesn't show anything on my external monitor. In order that the external monitor works again I have to plug the DVI cord out and in or press recognize monitors under monitor settings.
I also did a PMC and SMC reset but both did not help.
I have also done a complete reinstall witch did not help as well.
I also did a test with a MBA from a friend (exact same model) and his always works with the external display after sleep while mine only works every second time.
Could this be a hardware defect? sound pretty strange to me, but who knows...

I have managed to make the Apple Hardware test by just pressing "D" while restarting. The test, however, did not find any error - but this does not surprise me as I think it only tests the ram.

  • Main display blank after sleep under Mavericks

I use a NEC Multisync LCD 2690 as my main display, and a small Hansol H550 as a secondary one; when waking up from sleep, the NEC is blank and everything is crammed up on the Hansol. Under Lion, I could go to the System Preferences, choose Monitors and Detect Monitors to force the displays to correct themselves but this feature is absent under Mavericks; any idea how I could correct this without having to perform a complete restart each time the Mac Pro goes to sleep?

Found the so-called missing feature: in System Preferences, choose Monitors and hold down the Option key to get the Dectect Monitors button. Still, loosing the main display after sleep is a BIG bug...
P.S. I’m working with a French system, the naming of the features might be slightly off.

  • X1 Carbon Touch Screen stops responding after sleep

    Hi,
My X1 Screen does not come back after sleep for several minutes. I've encountered this problem the very fist day I've received it, a reboot solved the problem but after few days it happened again, this time it took 2-3 hours for it to come back after several reboots. After a week it was gone for good, Service replaced the motherboard and just received my X1 back yesterday. Today it happened again. A reboot solved the problem but symptoms are same. Comp goes to sleep, when I try wake it up, X1 works but diplay is totaly gone. I can hear the sounds, see the fingerprint sensor etc is alive but can not wake up the display..
Model is 208A and Win 8.1
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks

Hey...got your back on this one! I returned a T440s because of this.....tech support had no idea...same problem for the replacement they sent to me, and again they it's a motherboard issue. Nope....trial and error...found the solution. Download and upgrade your fingerprint pro software and it's fixed. Here is the link. Please post if it worked for you too!

  • Screen does not turn on after sleep - ProBook 4530s - Windows 8.1 (64bit)

    Hi everyone,
Not sure if this had to be posted in notebook display and video section, or laptop lockups, freezes and hangs. Anyway, I have a problem, where everything is fine with the computer, it's running smoothly, but whenever I make it go to sleep, after it does it instantly, the signals are of a regular laptop sleep - power buton flashing, no other signs of computer being on.
However, the problem appears when turning the computer back on after sleep. After pressing the power button, the computer straight away starts working - you can hear the fan turned on, etc, just that pretty much nothing changes with the screen. Sometimes, with some particular light directed towards the screen, you can even see, that the computer is on (seeing the clock on the display), just like the brightness was set down to 2% or something. And there is nothing that helps from what I have tried to do (tried reinstalling both AMD drivers and Intel HD drivers). I researched this problem extensively but could not find a solution, however, as I have noticed that this is quite an old problem (assuming from the date of the posts this problem first showed up), there might be a solution for it, to which I just have not noticed the answer?
If anyone can help me, please do, the sleep function is essential and extra important function when living on campus at university, I just cannot operate like this.
Hopefully someone will know, thank you in advance.

  • Mac Keeps Crashing after sleep

I have a brand new iMac.
It works perfectly, except that it crashes after waking it from sleep. Not always, but frequently enough to be quite annoying. I initially thought this was due to network hardware I had installed for a network storage drive, but I have since uninstalled it, and it did not fix the problem.
I will wake if from sleep, it will work for about 30 seconds, then the screen will turn pink (or white, or gray) and it will freeze. Sometimes this will happen when I have pressed no keys. Sometimes this will happen when I go to start a program.
I called the support line, and they had me do a hardware reset (holding Command, Option, P, R while starting.) But this did not fix the problem.
If I set my computer never to sleep, I have no problems.
I am trying to avoid bringing my iMac back to the Apple store. I read a post once where a person said this occurred because of a wireless router problem. Has anyone heard of this as a cause? I am using a Lynksys, but was thinking of getting Apple's Time Capsule anyway, and will do so now if this would fix the problem. Does anyone know if this might fix the problem?
If it is any help, this is the error message I always get in Console Messages:
    12/19/10 11:05:10 AM apsd-ft[146] <APSCourier: 0x100609db0>: Stream error occurred for <APSTCPStream: 0x102f02bf0>: Error Domain=NSPOSIXErrorDomain Code=57 UserInfo=0x102f01480 "The operation couldn’t be completed. Socket is not connected"

    Any advise appreciated, thanks.

I could not find any kernal panics in the console list, but I did figure out the problem.
Apparently, network storage devices can be problematic if the iMac sleeps, and they do not support sleep. I have since purchased a Time Capsule as my router, and now have my network storage device plugged into this. Actually, my router could have been the problem also, as it does also serve as network storage.
For anyone who reads this who has problems with the iMac crashing after sleep, consider what network storage devices might be connected.
