PB G4 to WRT54G Ping Times with Packet Loss!!???

This morning when I woke up my PB G4, my Airport couldn't find my network. Found out that my father had turned off the modem and router because his Dell, which is wired to the router, had slow connection to the network (10 MB/ps or less, I think). I tried using Internet Connect using the assigned Network name and entering the WPA Personal password with no luck. So I then reset the router, configured to it's original settings and my fathers Dell got a better connection but my PB has gotten slower in connecting to sites and the page loading is considerably slower. Looked at iStumbler and it shows a lower signal and now it's showing noise, where before there was none. I ran a ping test to the router and got this.
--- 192.168.1.1 ping statistics ---
100 packets transmitted, 98 packets received, 2% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 1.536/2.495/26.476/3.414 ms
The router is a WRT54G v5 with the latest firmware that I had just reflashed.

I reset my router, changed the channel to 11 and disabled the SSID. That setting got a better but still iffy ping time with no noise.
I tried your suggestion and got this, along with some noise.
--- 192.168.1.1 ping statistics ---
100 packets transmitted, 99 packets received, 1% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 1.596/4.201/33.784/6.652 ms
Any other ideas?

  • Different filesize after transmission with packet loss

    HI!
I'm simulating packet loss on audio streams which are transferred over a network by using the JMF.
    I'm doing the following:
read audio-WAVE file --> transcode into DVI for instance and sending --> generating packet loss --> transmitting over RTP to remote device --> receiving and saving in WAVE-file (linear format)
Now I'm wondering, why the size of the WAVE file on the receiver side is lesser than the size of the file of the sender side (about the amount of created packet loss in percent ). I think they have to be the same. If I play the received files in an audioplayer, the duration is logically the same, too. For each lost packet, JMF has to put a "silence" sample within the audio stream data. So this results in the same amount of samples and WAVE-file size.
Can someony explain me, why do the files have a different size ?

  • Need Help with Packet Loss and routing Loop perhaps???

    Hi,
I am running into a very odd situation. One of our highly critical systems (172.18.1.2/16) is losing connection intermittently for brief periods of time (1minute, 3 minute, 50 seconds and so on).
I have gathered some information that I would like to share with you guys:
The switch is a 3560 (Show version is in ShowVersion.txt)
default gateway is 172.18.10.254/16 (virtual IP in an HSRP , packet capture is done on the active node)
I have noticed that pings to one of the default gateways drop infrequently (more frequently from machines on 172.18.0.0/16) segment.
total number of machines on 172.18.0.0/16 do not exceed 200
I have captured packets on Interface Vlan1 and I found something very weird, perhaps pointing to a routing loop??? (see capture.png) The ICMP request comes and hits the 172.18.10.254 with TTL of 128 TWICE! then packet capture shows that same packet with TTL decremented by one TWICE! again and again until it reaches TTL of 1 and then it responds with a reply.
At times it completely ignores the requests and causes a request timed out.
I am confused and need help in right direction. I really appreciate it.
can you also confirm if the multiple packets mean routing loop somewhere?
    Thanks

Could you post a copy of your HRSP config and the results of a #show standby?
    Thanks

I tried pinging the same website from the access point itself and got no losses at all and no pings higher than 40ms. When I connect with a different laptop (Linux-based this time) I get pings around 200ms (both to the AP and to ya.ru) and still no losses. When I use my Android-based phone, I get no losses and no pings higher than 80ms.
I could probably blame the difference between my phone and the Linux-based laptop on the old WiFi adapter in the laptop, but my Windows laptop has a new Broadcom 43224 a/b/g/n adapter, so I'm really surprised by the incredibly high ping times and packet losses.
I don't even know where to look for a possible solution, but here's my hostapd.conf, hope it might help: http://codepad.org/jxeuFNrb (I already tried changing channels and/or changing HT40- to HT40+, but that didn't help). Does anyone know what might be the root of my problem and how to fix it?
Thanks (and sorry if my English is a little bit weird).
UPD: oh wait, it turned out that the reason for the high pings was an application I was running on the Windows machine that seemed to somehow overload the WiFi adapter. Now that I turned it off, pings are around 50 ms, but I still get lost packets sometimes (5 packets out of 50 were lost). I wonder what could be the reason for these lost packets.

If the issue only occurs with your Windows laptop, then I doubt the issue is going to be with your Arch machine (or hostapd setup).

  • Increasing Frequency of Packet Loss

Has anyone else been experiencing packet loss more frequently in the last month?  I've noticed it a few times when streaming shows or Twitch and lately it's been pretty severe when playing League of Legends.

What state are you located in? Twitch in general has been having tons of issues that they aren't owning up to. I've had a ticket open with them for a month now showing that there is a ton of issues on their end.
However, I have been having issues with packet loss in other games. Mainly with routing through the main Los Angelas Data Center. This started a month ago for me as well. I used to get a latency of 20-30 through the LA Hub. Now it spikes anywhere from 200-300ms after a certain time of day (usually 6:00PM PST). Using ping plotter, I can clearly see that the LA hub is causing most of my issues and later down the route I'm getting 10-20% packet loss in 2 other hubs before I reach the data centers for the game I'm playing.
As a gamer, you'd know the difference between 20ms and 250ms, which is what I feel after 6pm pst. Verizon Support has not owned up that it is their issue so far and the support I've reached out to from the gaming companies can clearly point out that the issue is with the Verizon data center at different hops.
I'm getting annoyed with this and it hasn't been fixed for well over a month.

  • Anyone else on 4G LTE seeing fairly high packet loss recently?

For the past week or two I've been noticing quite a bit of packet loss when I run a ping test against 8.8.8.8 (Google DNS) or Yahoo. Each time I run the ping test for 250-500 pings and the packet loss is consistently around 3-5% which is high. Verizon just upgraded the tower in my area to 4G LTE around 3-4 weeks ago and so far my speeds have been pretty great (20-35 Mbps) and my signal is strong without fluctuation (-67 dBi, SINR 20-30) so it's just the packet loss that I'm dealing with.
The first week of being on the 4G LTE I ran a few quick ping tests against Google while setting up my 4G antenna and didn't notice any packet loss but maybe I just didn't run the tests long enough. I've tried pinging a few other servers like 4.2.2.2 (Verizon DNS) and 208.67.220.220 (OpenDNS) and I'm seeing like maybe one dropped packet in 500 pings which is only a .2% packet loss which is a huge difference from results I get pinging Google and Yahoo.
Anyone else noticing packet loss on your 4G LTE connection? I've already opened a ticket with Verizon but I don't know if they'll do anything about it since they like to just tag my location as a marginal coverage area and not look into issues when I report them.

I have as well. I am in Jacksonville, FL and notice when I put my phone into hotspot mode that any machine attached to it will suffer between 6-10% packet loss. It happens in spurts- at first when I connect it is perfect. 60ms pings to www.google.com and barely 1-2 lost packets in the first 5-10 minutes. Then all of a suddenly the whole thing just goes to pot. At first it starts losing a few packets... then it starts losing a BUNCH of packets. Then it gets so bad I start going from the "Request timed out" message to it being "Reply from 192.168.1.1: Destination net unreachable.". This continues for several minutes and then it returns to semi-normality. So a few minutes working, a few minutes not. It's pretty unbearable.
The really frustrating part is seeing AT&T users right next to me with almost 0% packet loss ;_; In the end, I usually have to connect to their phone to do any browsing, since mine simply doesn't allow me to do even the simplest of internet navigation when it gets like that.

  • Wifi packet loss after upgrading to 10.7.4

After upgrading all three macs (mb pro, mb air, imac) in the house to 10.7.4 they all experience wifi packet loss.  I ping to the local router.  I have connected to a multitude of wireless routers with similar result.
But here is strong evidence that is a the OS X software problem.  I am running linux inside of vmware fusion.  I have run the exact same ping commands simultaneously in (1) mac and (2) vmware linux.  The linux ping experiences zero packet loss, not even a single packet.  The mac at its best will lose 1% packets, but can increase beyond that.
We are suffering from slow internet in our corrent location as it is, and this has a noticable impact on our performance.  I am a bit afraid to upgrade to Mountain Lion for fear it may be even worse.
    Any thoughts?

Finally been able to get homefusion working reliably, after many moons of hassle but thats not the issue

  • 90% Packet Loss while online gaming. Almost sure i...

I have been experiencing heavy packet loss for about 3 months now, hoping it would disappear at some point.
Now that I realise it won't go away, I have contacted BT and all they've done is "turn off my ping latency" which is complete bull, and refer me to the BT experts, which I'm also sure are useless.
I've been trying ping, pathping and tracert commands to the servers I connect to. Ping shows 0% packet loss, tracert has request timeouts, and pathping doesn't even go past the 1st hop.
I don't even know what to do now, this wasn't an issue before, it just popped up suddenly and I can't fix it.
After using the ping -t command to my gateway address, I am 100% sure it is a BT routing issue that needs to be fixed.

    Hi neve1176,
Thanks for posting. Can you post up the results of your tracert and one from the BBC site for comparison and we'll take a look.
    Cheers

  • TMS reporting - Network Packet Loss

    Hi everyone,
I am trying to see packet loss reports in TMS but there is no info there.
My network is : VCS 7.0.2 with movi, c20 and ex60 registered (SIP) to it and a TMS 13.1.2.
The vcs is a starter pack and the TMS is the demo version. I first registered the endpoint to the vcs and then added the TMS to the network. I the added the endpoints and vcs to TMS. In TMS I see the endpoints and info about them, but unfortunatelly no info in the packet loss report. I made a call between movi and c20 with packet loss but no info was shown in the report.
I am very new to TMS and I wonder if there is something I should do in order to make the endpoints send packet loss info to TMS.
I sshed to the endpoints and I can see the info about packet loss and jitter through the api.
The network described above is my test network on which I can do prety much everything on. I also have the same problem (this time with EX60 endpoints, VCS Control and TMS) on a customer network and on that network I really need to get this working.
Any help would be much appreciated. Form what I read the endpoints should sent this info through HTTP to TMS. Am I right?
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi Magnus,
Thank you for your reply. I checked the logs and I get some info over there. I have attached the log.
Do you know what doc should I check to see if Ex60 is supported?

  • How do I fix 100% packet loss?

I have an 8mb connect but i roughly get like 4-5mb. I think i have the homehub version 1 or 1.5.
When i search for servers on Counter Strike Source and team fortress the whole interenet just resets and no servers found. I posted on the steam forums and they said it wass to do with packet loss.
I tried to test for packet loss on http://freeola.com/line-test/ and it says i have 100% packet loss then i tried on http://pingtest.net/ and it was unable to test for packet loss.
How do i fix 100% packet loss?

    Hi. Welcome to the forums.
I tried both, and the freeola one failed with 100% packet loss, but the pingtest site returned 0% packet loss.
I expect the former is being blocked by firewall/router as expected.
Seems like they aren't quite doing the same thing.

  • WRT54GS slamming Cable modem with Packets

I'm having trouble with my WRT54GS locking up my Cable Modem. TWC says its slamming the cable modem with too many packets. Is there any way to check this on my end? Full story below.
A little about my set up. I have Time Warner Cable business class Roadrunner service. 5 Static IPs. 4 being used at the moment. The Cable modem has a 4 port switch built in. Port 1 has a month or so old WRT54GS router v7 latest firmware (Gateway mode, Channel 6). Port 2 goes to my Sonicwall Barracuda them my internal network which also has WRT54GS router v7 latest firmware (Router mode, Channel 1). Both routers are sitting next to each other. Ports 3 & 4 have a Vonage Router hooked to each of them.
I started having trouble April 5 with the Internet being down that morning, then that night and falling morning. I power cycled the Cable modem to restore service. Called Time Warner Cable after the third reset. They told me that didn't see anything wrong from their end and I should call them when it is down. I did this and they said they would send someone out the next morning Friday. They came out on Friday morning and Checked cable which the tech said was fine so he replaced the Cable modem around 11:30. Fifteen minutes after he left the internet went down. I called TWC again. They did diagnostics on the cable modem from their end and saw that whatever was hooked up to port 1 was sent out 400 packets/sec. I think they said the cable modem could only handle 300. Port 1 is connect a WRT54GS v7 (latest firmware). We are using it for our Blackberries from Cincinnati Bell for WIFI and UMA service (like T-Mobiles @Home service) for VoWiFi. I turned off all the phones but the router was still slamming the modem with packets. I turned off the WiFi just in case someone hacked our WPA2 key. Still slamming the router with packets with only my laptop hardwired to it for setting up the router. I turned off the router and the modem wasn't getting hammered anymore. Port 2 which is my internal network was only up to 150 after open a lot of TV shows. Ports 3 & 4 nothing. I disconnected the WRT54GS hooked to Port 1.
15 minutes after I got off the phone with TWC internet goes down. They send out a tech on Saturday to check the line again. he sees a slight problem on the line but it should not be causing a problem which the first guy might have thought. But since I am having trouble he goes outside and checks the connections. He finds loose connection and a bad line cap (blocking cable TV). He fixes the connections and replaced the line cap. He comes back inside and rechecks the line. Everything is great no more fluxation of signal or packet loss. I hook the WRT54GS back but it still takes down the modem. So I figure that it's just bad. So I take the WRT54GS from my internal network and set it up to match the one for the Blackberries it's replace. I install a WAP54G on the internal network in it's place. I can't get my Blackberry to get a UMA connection and doing Google searched find this page

I set up my router and Assess point with the setting from the above except the channel setting leaving them on channel 6 & 1 so they don't interfere with each other. Set: Fragment Threshold : 2304 (256-2346), RTS Threshold : 2304 (0-2347) and Beacon Interval : 50 (20-1024 ms). I also Enable WMM QOS. My phone connects and internet seems to be staying up Saturday Evening. I come to work Sunday afternoon and Internet is still up. I check my phone I have UMA signal and everything is right with the world. 20 minutes later internet goes down. I unplug the WRT54GS and power cycle the cable modem. I am now waiting to see it the internet will stay up without any WRT54GS hooked up.
I have not had a problem before and both Linksys are not even 6 months old. I have read review were people have had trouble with the WRT54GS. Were some people have no trouble will other all kinds of trouble.

As you said cable connected to the pc is working fine!!...connect modem to the router WRT54GS...reset the router once (30 secs) in such a way that Power light on the router is blinking...power cycle complete network i.e., unplug modem & router power cable for 30 secs...plug in modem power cable once lights are solid green plug in the power cable to the router...its important that after upgrading firmware resetting the router is important...so try this & it should deifnately work.Do the wireless & advanced wireless settings as router is currently in default settings.
Also, you want to connect your access point WAP54G to the router & open the setup page of WAP54G using 192.168.1.245 do the wireless settings & try connecting to the wireless router & then check....should work.

  • Help- WDS with Extreme-N & 2x Airport Express with ~ 40% packet loss

So this problem is driving me crazy. I recently moved into a house that has enough metal in the walls (don't ask) to prevent me from using a single base station so I expanded my network as a WDS utilizing an Airport Extreme (mixed NGB mode) and two Airport Express (one as a relay and one as remote). The configuration appears to work normally some times but other times (especially evenings) I get a very high rate of dropped packets between the client notes (which are connected through the WDS-enabled Expresses) and the base station (using a simple ping 10.0.1.1 to check connectivity to the APBS-N). The problem manifests itself from a users' perspective as very long DNS lookups which causes slow page loads in a browser but it's very reproducible via ping.
So far I've tried changing the channels on the network but I haven't seen a huge payoff there. iStumbler reports no additional networks on channel 2 which I'm using, there are some on channel 1, 5, and 13. I've also tried channels 7 and 11. We have no microwave in the house and our cordless phone (5.8ghz) never interrupted with our simpler Express-based network at our old house, n/m the fact that the phone is never in use when we have this problem.
I don't seem to see the problem when I'm local to (in the same room as) the AEBS; it really seems to happen only when I'm on the WDS-enabled remote and/or relay.
Other data points that may help are that the AEBS-N drops out of the Airport utility at the same time. Sometimes isn't gone for 30 seconds, other times for > 30 minutes. The other base stations continue to report "Green" in that they are not having any WDS problems. If I disconnect the remote node the relay will correctly reflect a status of yellow, so I know it somewhat works.
It's an open network (no encryption, open SSID) so it's unlikely that there's an issue there.
Clients include an Apple TV, iBook G4, MacBook, Tivo Series 3, Intel Mini and Dell Latitude D810. Because of the diversity of clients I don't think it's a driver or NIC adapter issue on any of the clients.
Does anyone have any experience working in a similar environment? Suggestions on troubleshooting packet loss (or other performance issues) in a WDS network?
    Thanks,
    Mike

Hello errorsupply. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I suggest downloading a copy of iStumbler. Use iStumbler's Inspector feature (select Edit > Inspector from iStumbler's menu) to determine the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) at different points around your house, by performing a simple RF site survey. Within the Inspector, note the values for "signal" & "noise" at these locations. Start with your MacBook near the main base station, note the readings, and then, choose the locations where you have the relay and remote base stations.
SNR is the signal level (in dBm) minus the noise level (in dBm). For example, a signal level of -53dBm measured near an access point and typical noise level of -90dBm yields a SNR of 37dB, a healthy value for wireless LANs.
The SNR, as measured from the MacBook, decreases as the range to the base station increases because of applicable free space loss. Also an increase in RF interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones, which increases the noise level, also decreases SNR.
    SNR Guideline
    o 40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
    o 25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
    o 15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
    o 10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
    o 5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
If the SNR is 20dB+ at each of these locations, then you should be getting reasonable performance from your AirPorts. If less, either try to locate/eliminate the source of the Wi-Fi interference or try relocating the relay and/or remote base station until they are within a 20dB SNR range of the main (and for the remote, of the relay).

  • WRT54G v6 packet loss, plz help!

I have a WRT54G V6 router with 1.01.1 latest firmware. I've noticed that after about 2 days of use, the router starts dropping massive packets. it's on a cable modem feed. What i normally do afterwards, is reset the router (unplug the power cable, plug it back in) and all is well, no more packet loss. I'm not sure what causes this or if the router itself is defective. This is the 3rd time this happened to me and not sure what to do.
    Packets: Sent = 1210, Received = 258, Lost = 952 (78% loss)
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 16ms, Maximum = 338ms, Average = 5ms
The above is what i got before rebooting the router.
    After rebooting:
    Packets: Sent = 162, Received = 162, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
pproximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 16ms, Maximum = 176ms, Average = 22ms
Took it offline for 15 seconds, plugged it back in and now it's all good. Zero packet loss.
I've also disabled it's wireless capabilities, since I do not use/need wireless, but dont' think this matters.

    Hi…….
Well in this case first reset the router by holding and pressing the reset on the back panel for 30seconds. Then reconfigure the router again.
And as you are not using the wireless connection you may disable the wireless connection for the router. Also what you can do is log into the setup page of the router with http:// 192.168.1.1 username leave blank and the password is admin. And on the setup screen lower the MTU to 1396 and then power cycle the whole network. [unplug and reconnect them back in a proper order ]

  • Time Capsule not compatible w MacBook Pro on 10.5.5 - packet loss

I've been limping along with rubbish internet speeds since upgrading to 10.5.5.
I assumed it was the isp - but then realised that the XP laptop connected via the same time capsule was having no problems.
Pinging shows 10 -30% packet loss.
In desparation we've reverted to the airport extreme and I have no connectivity issues which proves it a problem with how the MBP & Time Capsule work together.
All my data is on the timecapsule including my music library - how can I get this working again?

A "live verify" (ie, a verify performed on the currently-running system drive) in Disk Utility is unreliable. It's likely that you have a problem, but not guaranteed. You'll need to repair the hard drive at a minimum. Instructions are here:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/DU6.html
In my experience, repairs aren't always that reliable. In addition, I've been told that modern drives do not have these kinds of problems unless they are failing, but have no personal knowledge relating to that and don't know whether your five-year-old drive would be considered "modern." In any case, though, if it were me, I would probably erase the hard drive and restore from backups if I were you, rather than relying on a repair.
If the repair can't be completed, or if erasing the hard drive doesn't work, or if the problem comes back after erasing or repairing, then the drive is probably failing and will need to be replaced.
Regarding the bank issue, I believe this is either an error on the part of your bank or represents an attempt to hack your bank account remotely. If I were you, I would demand (politely, but firmly) an explanation of what the bank saw that they are identifying as malicious.
I honestly don't know how the bank could possibly identify malicious access, unless they noticed an attempted access from a weird IP address (for example, from an IP address in a different country or belonging to an identity-hiding service), which would indicate a hack not involving your computer. If malware on your computer was attempting access to your bank site, it wouldn't really look any different than a normal access attempt to the bank's site.
