PB G4 with incredibly slow start up

It does eventually start up, but it takes several minutes. Also seems like it is running hotter and a battery charge doesn't last very long.

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
How much free HD space do you have available? If less than 3GB, that's probably the issue.
If you have plenty of free HD space, first thing I'd do is check Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility>in the panel at left, select the first item in the list/your HD mechanism>look at the bottom of the main window next to S.M.A.R.T. status and see if it says “Verified” or something more ominous like “Failing.”
If that's ok, I would run Repair Disk: Boot from install disc (insert disc>restart>immediately hold down c key and keep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”)>at first screen go to Installer Menu>open Disk Utility>select your HD in the panel on the left side>click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility such as DiskWarrior or if the directory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself).
Next, run Repair Permissions: Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility>select HD in panel at left>click on Repair Permissions at bottom of main window and allow process to finish before quitting DU.
After that, run Background Maintenance (MacJanitor is a nice little freeware app to take care of it).
Post back, and if none of this basic maintenance takes care of things, we'll try some other troubleshooting.

I am having a problem with very slow start up after expanding RAM on my 2009 Mac Pro (8 Core 2.93GHz). When I run the Mac Pro with 2 x 2Gb RAM it takes 4 seconds before the gray screen, chime and spinning wheel appear.However when I expand the RAM to 20GB the grey screen and chimes appear after a long 20+ second black screen.
The RAM modules are paored 2 x 4GB Crucial CT51272BA1339.M18FMR and 6 x 2GB SAMSUNG M391B5673FH0-CH9, all DDR3 ECC.
Reading articles on the internet, I thought it may be damaged RAM modules, but I have completed memtest and all are okay. I have tried changing the pairs around and if I use any paired 2 modules the Mac Pro starts normally, only when I try running more than 2 modules the delayed start up happens. (black screen 20 Seconds)
I also have tried PRAM and SMU resets after changing the RAM setups, and the issues always occurs when I have more than 2 modules. As you can see I have 6 SAMSUNG modules and even with identical modules the issue happens, when increasing the RAM to more than 2 modules.
The Mac Pro runs fine after the start up screen and can see all the modules, but has anyone else come across this issue, or have any ideas as to why my Mac Pro is taking 20 seconds to start up with 20 GB RAM?

Macbook Air (OS Lion) with very slow start up

Hi all,
I do not know why but my Macbook Air with OS Lion is taking to long to start up and this problem started without any reason.
The Software if updated.
I surfed on internet trying to find a solution, I experimented several potencial solutions but till now I could not solve the problem.
It is very quick shutingdown but it takes arround 30 min. to start up.

Incredibly slow start-up, ports spiking

When I start Firefox 4 in Mac OS 10.6.7, I get a very curious phenomenon. FF almost hangs/freezes, but not quite. It basically brings the entire computer (a 1-year-old i7 iMac with 16 GB of RAM, so it's plenty fast enough) to a near-halt. Even command-tabbing to different apps is slow. I can't interact with FF at all for about 3 minutes or so when it's starting up. After that, it's fine.
Looking at it in Activity Monitor, CPU % and memory use all look normal, but at startup, the number of Ports used by FF spikes to over 1,500. Once it's responsive after that initial 3 minutes or so, that number drops back down to normal levels, around 200.
I have started my Mac in safe mode, started Firefox in safe mode, created a new user profile... nothing alters this strange startup behavior. The behavior doesn't occur in other user accounts on the same machine, nor on my laptop. Just on the iMac. So I'd assume that it's some extension I have or something, and yet... safe mode doesn't alleviate it.
Any thoughts?

My problem is definitely disk related. I booted an OS image from an external firewire drive (made with Super Duper) and launched Aperture. It took 14 seconds to start and become responsive. That is good and fast.
Before rebooting to my internal drive I repaired and verified it...no errors or problems found.
Starting Aperture from my internal drive takes over 2 minutes to start and become responsive, more when my secondary display is set other than desktop (within Aperture).
Other "big" apps, like Photoshop take longer to start (~20 seconds for Photoshop PS3) for me, but nothing else in the 2-3 minute range.
I guess the question is what is Aperture reading upon first launch that takes so long, and why does it only do this upon first launch? When I start it again after closing (but not rebooting) it's ready to go in 4 seconds.

Incredibly slow start up

As of this past weekend, my white iMac 24" computer running Leopard has begun taking @5 mins to start up, and once the Desktop appears, the HD crunches for another 3-4 minutes. Not sure where to go/what to do about this. Any suggestions?

What do you mean the HD crunches? Is it making an unusually loud clicking sound? Or does it seem to be the normal HD trying to read sound but more excessive? If the latter I would definitely try to start backing up your files starting with the most important first. Otherwise start by booting up to the install disk that your iMac came with by holding down the "C" key while booting. Instead of going through the installation, at the top click on the Utilities drop down menu and select Disk Utility. In the left hand column, select your internal hard drive, then Repair Disk Permissions and Repair Disk. If that passes ok again under the Utilities menu select Startup Disk. Click on your system drive and click restart.

Slow start up / "ghost programs"

I had some trouble with my harddisk when it filled up and became slow, so I made a clean install and copied back my things from Time Machine. But, and this problem happened before that too, my iMac takes forever to startup (about 5 minutes).
And every now and then a program (mostly iTunes) will become non-responsive, but apparently shuts down in a normal fashion when I close it. But the symbol in the dock will say it's still running, and in a mystical way... it is. Because force shut down doesn't work, neither with any program or a restart of the finder, and the only thing working is to do a cold restart of the machine. Interestingly, the activity monitor doesn't find the programs that hangs either, even if they are running.
I don't understand a thing right now...

1. Check your Startup Disk. Go to System Preferences/Startup Disk and make sure that your Mac OS X system drive/folder is selected as your startup disk. Otherwise the system could take longer searching for it every time you boot.

2. Repair Permissions. Open Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility select your hard drive on the left and under the First Aid tab click Repair Disk Permissions.

3. Verify Disk. While you are in Disk Utility after you Repair the Permissions click Verify Disk. This will check the integrity of your volume directory. If there are any errors that need to be addressed you will have to boot up to your install disk in order to run Repair Disk.

4. Check your login items list. Go to System Preferences/Accounts/Login items. If there are any Applications there that should not be simply remove it from the list.

5. Disconnect any external devices for testing purposes. External hard drives, ipods, scanners, printers, have been known at times to cause startup/shutdown issues.

I've bought a new 1 TB MyBook today so I can remove a Maxtor-disk I have who's been difficult to read from (it doesn't always appear in the Finder), so I'm moving my music and different stuff right now and I'll have to wait some time to do a startup without external disks. In addition I have a 500 GB LaCie with two partions (250 on each, one for Time Machine) who seems to work fine.
It's the actual start up which is the problem, not the login process.
I can live with the slow start up for now, but my main problem is when iTunes and Xtorrent freezes and starts acting like a ghost. Any ideas there? It just happened with Xtorrent again now. It's shut down, but the dock indicates that it's still running...

Early 2008 MacBook Pro - Very slow start up, very hot

Looking for some help. Searched quite a few of the online forums and have not been able to resolve this issue.
A few months back, my old reliable MacBook Pro (early 2008) started behaving oddly. Have no idea why, but went to start it up one day, and it took forever to start up and get me to the login screen. Been like that ever since. Occassionally, when I finally get to the login screen, the keyboard will not function. After a few minutes though, it always works. This only happens about 5% of the time. Once I log in, everything about the computer from a performance perspective seems to be pretty normal In addition to the slow start up, however, system gets extremely hot at the top of the keyboard, near the monitor. Fans run fast almost all the time when the system is powered on, and often when it is 'asleep'. CPU Temp goes to about 170, and the fans are always between 2400 and 3500.
I took it to Apple a while back, and based on the incredibly slow start up time they believed it was a disk issue. I went ahead and purchased a 500GB internal drive and this past weekend used SuperDuper to copy the original boot disk. All went well and I now have a new internal disk. At the same time, I upgrade the RAM from 2GB to 4GB.
After all that, the system is still very slow at startup and runs as hot as it did before. I will say, it does seem to be slightly faster on the startup, but not what I had become accustomed to for the first 4 years of use.
I looked at the activity monitor and don't see any processes hogging resources.
No anti-virus software running.
Currently running Mac OSX 10.6.8
My battery is pretty muc shot, but I never really use the system unplugged.

I upgraded to Lightroom 4.1 a few months ago and since then have been battling with incredibly slow spot removal tool, slow changes between tools and modules, and a big time lag in using the slider adjustments. I use Lightroom for Portrait photography work and it is incredibly frustrating. I feel like my workflow is half the speed it used to be because of all the wait time. Once I select an area for the spot removal, for example, I can wait about 2-4 seconds for it to work. I find that this lag is shorted when I first open Lightroom and begin using it, but the lag time quickly increases as the hours literally drag by. Are other people having these issues after upgrading to Lightroom 4? Has anyone found a fix for this? And does anyone know if Adobe is going to get cracking and get this fixed for 4.2? Lightroom is supposed to speed up our workflows not slow it down!!!

Incredibly Slow with Spinning Ball

In the last week my MacBook Pro has become incredibly slow. I have contacted Apple Support, done a safe start, verified the disk with no issues. Even typing into this box is met with constant pauses and freezes.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

My phone will randomly start being incredibly slow

I got my phone about a week before christmas of 2013 and for awhile it was good & then it randomly started to become incredibly slow & sometimes just shut off. Now it wasn't freezing, so don't confuse the two. It's just anything I do on the phone it takes forever to do as if it's sticking. It takes me several & several swipes to even change screens. & then it will randomly stop. But when it is being very slow, it takes 4x the normal time to charge. I'll go to bed with 10% charge & wake up about 8 hours later with just barely 50%. Do I need to buy a completely new phone or is there something I can do to fix this easily??

Lion very slow starting apps with Firewire 800 drive mounted.
When my Firewire 800 drive is in sleep mode, when I start up an app like MS Excel or Addressbook. I get a spining wheel and a delay before the app launches. Any ideas? Never happened in 10.6.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

My computer is INCREDIBLY slow after Yosemite install

I recently installed the latest operating system Yosemite for my Apple Mac Pro and ever since it has been installed, my computer has been INCREDIBLY slow! Everything from starting up to applications opening to the **** internet! I'm ready to punch my fist into my **** monitor, even though I know it's not my monitor's fault. lol. Macworld has published an article (http://www.macworld.com/article/2837811/bugs-and-fixes-solving-a-yosemite-post-i nstall-disaster.html) about this along with the problem they think is causing it but I checked and the file in question doesn't exist on my computer. I don't want to go through the last step that is mentioned which involves downloading Yosemite onto an external hard drive and then installing from there. That step would also involve manually searching for files that might be causing the issue.
So, has anyone else experienced their computers running REAL slow after the update and did you figure out a simple solution?

Mac desktop running incredibly slow.

Hi I have a 2010 Imac which is running incredibly slow!
3.06 GHz processor, 4GB memory running OS X Yosemite
I was hoping someone could please help me get to the bottom of what is wrong with it - i did wonder does it need a new hard drive? The original hard drive was replaced by Apple under warranty in summer 2013.
It was running really slow and then last week I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.3 which seemed to give it a new lease of life. however yesterday there was a power cut and since I have restarted it it is taking forever to do the smallest task. It takes about a minute to open up mail and then you have to wait around 30 secs to see the messages, then wait even longer to click and write.
Having looked up common faults I have tried looking at the utilities section but there is nothing showing a high percentage and I really don't know what else to do?

If you haven't already done so, try this simple step first. Probably there will be no change. In that case, see below.
When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
          SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
