PB Hangs at shutdown after 10.5.8 update

I recently updated my OS to 10.5.8 from 10.5.2 Everything seemed fine... When I shut down the finder quits, everything disappears from the desktop, then it just hangs. I have to hold power button to get it to turn off.

Well, you guys have plenty of company. Every time an update is released, there's a chorus of groans from people who blame all their troubles on it. Usually, it turns out to be that they're running third-party software that hasn't been updated for compatibility with the update, and once they do that, everything is fine. So check all your third-party login items and System Preference panes and apply all available updates to them. Run the Repair Permissions and Repair Disk routines in Disk Utility. See whether these steps don't get your machines running right again.

  • Mac hangs on shutdown after 10.5.3 update

    hey
ever since i updated to 10.5.3 every time i shut down my mac...it just hangs...so i have to keep the power button on the macbook pressed to force it to switch off.
also...i keep being asked to do some EFI Firmware update and i keep doing it...but it never seems to stick.
    any ideas?
    thanks in advance
    m8edy

I went through the same problem and go on the phone with apple after already running all of the disk utility repairs and pram reset. They then told me to unplug all power sources including the battery and hold down the power button for 15 sec (even harder reset)...that did not work. Then I was told to make a time machine backup and re-install osx (leopard) with an "erase and reinstall." I then took all necessities (photos, docs etc) from backup and put them on the computer, did another time machine backup (this one takes a long time b/c it is like the first time you turn on the computer). I then played around with some big apps and tried shutting down...it worked. This guarantees that there was a setting problem and not a hardware malfunction. I have now re-updated to 10.5.3 with the combo update and so far everything has been fine. If it is an application issue you can also do trial and error to figure out which one with your time machine backup. Reminder: when you do re-install calendars, email, address book etc. make sure to retrieve the application support file from the first time machine backup (it has all data in it) so you won't have to redo your databases which will be wiped when you do the re-install.

  • MBP shutdown after 10.6.2 update is slower than before!

    Hello all,
Since after 10.6.2 update, my MBP shutdown time extended from less than 5 secs to over 25 secs. I've gone through some solutions including resetting disk permissions using disk utility, setting the PRAM, using font explorer to clear fonts as suggested by a user that got his problem solved. No luck at the moment. Prior to 10.6.2 update my MBP used to shutdown in less than 5 secs. Although i bought a new usb modem called ZTE usb Modem (Model: K3565-Z) from my cellphone carrier Vodacom in South Africa. I mention this because on my Mac Mini, whenever i want to shutdown, i have to force quite this application before the Mac Mini (which is also running 10.6.2 update) shuts down fine under 5 secs. So am guessing the usb modem is the cause of the problem somehow but I can't find out how. If not then it must be with the 10.6.2 update.
    Any help will be appreciated.

1.) Try resetting some of the hardware involved (PRAM~NVRAM). See this Apple KB for details, etc.:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Can't hurt to try, and apparently this has helped others recently.
Failing that, take it to an Apple Store and ask staff there for assistance.
2.) Did you update via Software Update or did you download the combo? If you used Software Update, get the Combo updater instead and re-apply:

  • Fresh install of 10.5 hangs at boot after 10.5.8 update

I'm troubleshooting a MacBook that hangs at start-up after installation of the 10.5.8 complete update. I've run Disk Utility (no errors), fsck (fixed a single error), and repair permissions (oddly, repaired a few on this fresh install). I've booted into verbose mode, and it appears that there's an infinite loop of:
    localhost DirectoryService[#]: Launced version 5.8.1 (v514.28)
localhost ReportCrash[#]: Saved crashreport to /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/DirectoryService. . . .(it goes on, but it's just date info).
Again, this is a fresh installation of 10.5. The only programs that have been updated are those updated through Apple Update. I did have problems installing the 10.5.8 update through the Update utility because "the package contents could not be verified," but the update installed fine after I downloaded it from Apple's site.
    Any ideas?

  • Kernel panic upon shutdown after 10.5.2 update caused by virusscan 8.6

Hi I am wondering if anyone has experienced kernel panic due to virusscan manager (virusscan 8.6)
    especially during shutdown.
    I have had 4 panics since I went 10.5.2

The panics don't occur every time I shutdown It happens once in two days. This doesnt happen on my wife's computer the only differnece is hers is the latest 2.2Ghz model running 10.5.2 with just a single user mine is the mid 2007 mb 2.0 ghz with two users.
I run the virusscan as I am expected to run it If I have to use my mac in my school.

  • System hangs on reboot/shutdown after kernel upgrades

I've been experiencing the problem that, whenever pacman upgrades the kernel, the system hangs on reboot or shutdown.  It only happens on the first reboot/shutdown after a kernel upgrade.  I've noticed it consistently for a while now.
    To reboot, I issue:
    # reboot
    To shutdown, I issue:
    # shutdown -h now
I should also mention that I typically reboot after kernel upgrades because hotplugged storage devices (USB, SD) fail to be detected unless the system reboots.  That is, devices plugged in during the upgrade remain usable, but plugging in something new appears in /dev.  There may be an obvious reason for it that I'm missing, but it's never bothered me enough to look into it.  Not sure if this and the reboot/shutdown issue are related, though.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

When Apple Hardware Test says there is a problem, there definitely is a problem.
But like many diagnostics, it does not catch everything.
It can increase your confidence that you do not have gross flaws. The Hardware problems that remain may be more subtle ones.

  • Mac Pro 5,1 hangs on shutdown

I use a 2012 3.33 GHz 6-core Mac Pro 5,1 in my recording studio, running OS 10.9.2 with 16 GB RAM. I use all of the PCIe slots:  slot #1 is the ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card, #2 is a Universal Audio UAD-2 Quad card for my powered-plugin library, #3 is the Avid Pro Tools HD-Native card and #4 is an OWC Accelsior 120GB 6G SSD which I use as my primary Pro Tools production drive.
Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks and added the Accelsior SSD (this January) the computer hangs on shutdown and occasionally on startup. With shutdown it's the same every time - when I shut it down I get a blank gray screen with only the cursor arrow showing, and I can still move the arrow around. After a few minutes I hit the power button to force it to shut off.
The machine also runs very sluggishly and takes forever to boot up.  It almost as if there are a ton of hidden processes bogging it down.
I've checked and re-checked for viruses, I've reset the SMC and PRAM, I use Disk Utility to verify all my drives and repair all the disk permissions about 3 times per week, and I do daily diagnostics with Tech Tool Pro 7.  I'm about to pull all the PCIe cards except the graphics card and disconnect all peripherals except keyboard and mouse and then reconnect everything in steps but before I do all that I was wondering if any forum participants have dealt with a similar problem ?
    - Lang Doogie

You could try a different SSD than the Mercury model from OWC.
Also, any and even the ones from OWC should have TRIM enabled and you do not.
I have a number of Samsung SSD and just noticed one $110 250GB

  • Why is my macbook pro hanging on shutdown?

    Hi,
For the last few weeks my MBP has been hanging at shutdown or restart on the gray screen with the grey loading wheel. I tried leaving it on this stage for a day with an outcome of it still hanging.
I read a thread on apple support that mentioned the same problem with a solution of uninstalling kaspersky anit virus which i had quite recently installed myself but after uninstalling the problem ceased for just one  shutdown cycle.
Additionally, I am able to shutdown or restart at the login screen and I have tried shutting down with the "reopen windows when logging back in" box both checked and unchecked and with windows open or closed of multiple programs.
The list of programs currently installed are: Parellels Desktop (with windows 7 proffesional with every default installed windows program), memorex expressit label design studio for windows (the only non default windows program installed on my computer), Adobe CS5.5 Master Collection, Microsoft Office 2011 for mac os, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, the Messages beta, Vuze, Tuneup, iBooks author, HP photosmart printer (and extensions), Adobe AIR and flash, and every default program that comes pre-installed on the late 2011 macbook pro. Every one of these programs is fully updated.
    Please Help:)

Boot into the Lion Recovery disk (command-r) and select Disk Utility. Then run Repair Disk.

  • Can the launchd-shutdown.log tell why a Mac is hanging at shutdown?

    Hi,
I was wondering if the launchd-shutdown.log can tell a developer the reason a Mac is hanging at shutdown. I hva bee having an itermittent hanged shutdown issue since installing Mac OS X Lion and there is no indicator on why this is happening.
Thanks for your time and assistance!

    twtwtw wrote:
maybe.  open it up and match the string 'exited', and look for strings that say 'Exited x.xxxxxx seconds after the first signal was sent'.
You might also check the hangreporter logs, though you'll need to be in an admin account for that.
    Thanks for the response.
I found something interesting, there are some strings that says the followning:
Exited while shutdown in progress. Processes remaining: 40/1
      120061
What does the entry above mean?
Most of the shutdown log says the "Exited x.xxxxxx seconds after the first signal was sent" string.
I have another question are those strings related to the process that could be hanging the computer?
I will take another look later tonight.

  • Leopard now hangs on shutdown and restart, but not if I unlog first

I've seen various people posting about this similar issue.
So basically my iBook was running fine with Tiger, and since I updated it to Leopard, it will hang when I want to restart or shut it down from the >Shutdown menu.
I tried many things, deinstalling stuff, and what have you. It seems however that running uninstaller programs or Maintenance which asks to restart to apply changes works.
So I tried first unlogging from the system, then from the login menu, hit the shutdown button, and it appears to work.
In the /var/log/system.log file there is nothing printed from the last entry just before I request the shutdown and when it powers back up.
Any idea how to definitely solve this problem? Sometimes I forget to manually log off, and holding down to hard stop the computer is something I used to laugh about when I used to be on windows...
    Thanks for your advice.

Ok I see. Are the times displayed the american way, i.e: 12 hours per day? 24h per day? I can see some activity going on, but I can't tell if it was in the morning or in the afternoon :-P
I was about to come with some good news yesterday, as I thought to have found the problematic application, unfortunately after running OSX software update, Leopard got blocked once again upon shutdown. So I still can't tell whose fault it is.
Here is an excerpt of my log file, do I guess this happened just before I shutdown the computer as I closed Firefox and ran osx software update:
    8/11/10 11 Aug 10:07:54 [0x0-0x1c01c].org.mozilla.firefox[474] Debugger() was called!
    8/11/10 11 Aug 10:16:46 Software Update[582] arguments=(null)
Then here the computer got blocked and there is no more message printed in the log except for todays messages.
Well it's maybe firefox? I have a few extensions added to it, maybe it's not exiting cleanly? That's why my computer would get blocked only after a few hours of work, maybe firefox builds up at to a certain point where it's ready to lock the computer on shutdown?

  • Rc.shutdown hangs on shutdown/reboot

    Hi,
I installed Arch two weeks ago. Unfortunately it hangs at shutdown/reboot. It stopps succesfully the network-daemon and stops at this point. Keyboard and Mouse are responding but I'm unable to log in via a different console.
The daemon that should be stopped after network is syslog-ng.
    My daemons:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng !hotplug !pcmcia network nscd portmap fam nfslock netfs ypbind autofs crond gdm)
I was able to reboot the system succesfully by disabling syslog-ng in the rc.conf and commenting out following lines of the rc.shutdown:
    #!/bin/bash
    # /etc/rc.shutdown
    . /etc/rc.conf
    . /etc/rc.d/functions
    # avoid staircase effect
    /bin/stty onlcr
    echo " "
    printhl "Initiating Shutdown..."
    echo " "
    if [ -x /etc/rc.local.shutdown ]; then
    /etc/rc.local.shutdown
    fi
    if [ "$PREVLEVEL" = "3" -o "$PREVLEVEL" = "5" ]; then
    # Shutdown daemons
    let i=${#DAEMONS[@]}
    while [[ i -ge 0 ]]; do
    if [[ `echo ${DAEMONS[$i]} | grep '^[^!]' | wc -l` -eq 1 ]]; then
    /etc/rc.d/${DAEMONS[$i]#@} stop
    fi
    let i=i-1
    done
    # find any leftover daemons and shut them down
    # these lines cause my system to stop the shutdown
    #if [ -d /var/run/daemons ]; then
    # for daemon in `ls /var/run/daemons`; do
    # /etc/rc.d/$daemon stop
    # done
    #fi
    fi
    # Terminate all processes
    stat_busy "Sending SIGTERM To Processes"
    /sbin/killall5 -15 &> /dev/null
    /bin/sleep 5
    stat_done
I have absolutely no idea why my system is acting this way.
    [UPDATE]
I tried using syslogd instead of syslog-ng but there's still the same problem. Why does my system dislike a system-logger this much?

    *bump*
I have an almost identical problem to this one.  Which would be the most pertinent system, and log files one would need to help me trouble shoot this?

    Dear DS Store,
Thanks for the response.  (Is this what you mean in your step by step tutorial by giving credit?)
I should also preface my run-through of your tips by noting that my wife's Macbook air will shut down properly and get past the "unmount of /net failure" business without problems if I do not run iTunes (current version 10.6.1).  I can run Microsoft Office, Chrome, Mail etc no problem without triggering this problem.  In these circumstances I've been able to see that the next messages that SHOULD show up after the "unmount of /net failed (45)" are:
    done
    MACH Reboot
    wlEvent EN0 EN0 Link DOWN
(These lines blink by so quickly that I couldn't read them, I had to freeze frame a video I made of a proper shutdown sequence).
However, when I run iTunes, I ALWAYS get this failure where it freezes after the "unmount of /net failure (45) line" and is never able to shut down properly.
This problem occurs with both local accounts as well as with mobile users syncing to my portable home directory server.  (Even with a local account with nothing in the iTunes library).
I should also note that before I got your response to my question, I had already undertaken to reinstall OS X (with full software update done immediately after), and still was encountering the same problems after.
    Regarding your steps:
Step #1 SMC reset - Done, did not change outcome - still hung at shutdown
Step #2 PRAM reset - Done, still hangs at shutdown
Step #3 Startup manager - not done as I have no problem with getting into the boot volume
Step #4 - Repair disk - DIsk repaired using Lion recovery HD, no errors found, did not change outcome
Step #5 - reset home directory permissions and ACLs - done for all local accounts, portable home directory accounts, root - still hanging at precisely the same point
Step #6 - hardware test not done, problem seems to be software/OS related.  (going to run extended tests overnight)
Step #7,8 - did not seem pertinent to this situation, as it is possible to boot into all accounts no problem.
Step #9 - all data backed up on Time Machine, and also synced to server
Step #10 - software updated done
Step #11 - permissions repaired - still problematic
Step #12 - Onyx cache cleaning - plists check out fine, cleaned out all caches (except system logs), did all the maintenance tabs (did pretty well everything I could see as options) - problem still persists.  (I had hoped that cleaning kernel and dyld caches might do the trick, but no).
Step #13 - Deleted ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.whatever and anything.plist (3 files altogether) - same problem.  (There did not appear to be any other corrupt plists that needed deletion)
Step #14 - Activity monitor - no runaway processes.  mdworker busy, but due to spotlight caches being purged in step 12. System Diagnostic log shows nothing.
Step #15 - there isn't any third party software on my wife's macbook air that isn't running on my own macbook air and macbook pro (both of which are not facing this problem).  I tried to uninstall and reinstall iTunes prior to getting your advice (this is a PITA, by the way!!!!), and had ended up with 10.6.0 installed (since the downloadable installer from Apple at the moment isn't the latest 10.6.1 version), and software update not recognizing the need to update, which is when I went ahead and reinstalled OSX. This did not clear the problem.
Step #16 - created a brand spanking new account called test.  Problem continues to occur with the new account.
At this moment am wanting some feedback on what you think sofar of the problem before I go ahead and do something more destructive or tedious.
I should note that I do not seem to be able to find any reference to the problem in the system.log or kernel.log files in Console.  When I look through kernel.log there is nothing logged around the time the failure to shut down occurs, and in system.log, the last logged item is usually 1-2 seconds before I get the stream of other stuff that occurs as shown in the screenshot above, which includes a statement to the effect of "Userspace shutdown finished at [timestamp here]" etc etc....  I do not know if this other stuff is logged elsewhere, or not at all, as I have never seen this stuff in the logs in console.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Problems with random shutdown after replacing a swollen battery

    Hello all,
Perhaps one of you can help with this issue.
I'm using a Macbook Pro 17" mid-2007 model. A few months ago, the power disconnected from the machine when the battery had already run down and the machine did a hard shutdown. When I booted it back up there were serious problems with the display. Eventually it stopped working altogether. I took it for service and it was determined to by the NVIDIA graphics processor problem, so Apple replaced my motherboard.
When I got the machine back from servicing, there was a rattle in the right fan that gradually got worse. After a while the touchpad button stopped depressing in the center. I also experienced several random shutdowns while operating on battery power. I learned about the swelling battery issue with macbooks and ordered a replacement. By the time the replacement battery arrived my original battery was quite swollen. I'm concerned that the swelling battery may have warped the case a bit, leading to the fan noise.
I have now replaced the battery, but I'm still experiencing random shutdowns after 20+ minutes of use on battery power. I have done the RSS tests that were recommended in other forums and there doesn't seem to be any random shutdown problems when I'm plugged in -- only under battery power. My understanding is that a swelling battery can sometimes cause the battery to disengage from the electrical contacts on the MB, causing a sudden shutdown. I'm wondering why the problem is persisting now with a new battery? After one random shutdown, I tried to power up again using the battery, while pushing the battery into place at various angles, but I couldn't find any angle that would give power to the machine. The fan noise is also still present.
Can anyone offer an explanation or advise on any methods to overcome these random shutdowns? I have checked the console and the machine isn't registering any error when it shuts down, although when it restarts it says "DirectoryService[35] Improper shutdown detected"

Yep, it is video (or: or audio for video) so unless you're sure you need it (because you work or will work with the DVC Pro HD video/audio codec), you can remove the plug from its' folder and put it in your documents folder (don't trash it, I have no idea if it is necessary for non-DVC Pro HD users to have it installed too).
The WWW is littered with posts from people encountering bugs and crashreports with DVCPROHDAudio.plugin as the main suspect. Most of those posts seem to be from video people rather than audio folks.
    http://www.google.nl/search?q=DVCPROHDAudio.plugin&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=or g.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
But, if you get crashes and you see this one mentioned in the report, disable it, restart, and see if the problem's gone.
