PB incorrectly identifies external display?

Hi everyone!
I recently purchased a Sceptre X22WG-1080p monitor for my PowerBook G4 (17", 1.67ghz), having enjoyed using a similar Sceptre display with my work MBP. However, I've just had a nightmare of a time trying to get this to display properly on my G4.
When I attach the monitor, the PB recognizes it as a "Sceptre X22HG" - a completely different product. I also can't get the resolution to display properly: setting it to a 1680x1050 resolution at 60hz (the supposed normal resolution for the monitor) displays stretched and, worse, partly off the lefthand side of the screen. No amount of horizontal adjustment on the monitor preferences will bring it far enough to the right. Also, the picture displayed won't fill up the screen - there is about half an inch of empty screen at the top and bottom. The same problem occurs on the aforementioned 17" PowerBook running 10.5.4 and on my TiBook running 10.4.11 - both 'Books handle other external displays properly.
Sceptre tech support, of course, has relatively no idea what a Mac is, though Macs are listed as being supported by the hardware. The tech guy told me to adjust the scaling on my video card (in this case, ATI radeon 9700) to "full screen", but as far as I know there isn't a way to do that in OSX. I've played around with DisplayConfigX, but can't make head nor tail of what I can do to fix this. Anyone have any thoughts? Drivers? I have a hunch that if I can just get the PB to call the monitor by it's true name that this will work itself out. But how?
Thanks so much for your help and time!
All the best,
Ryan

  • Incorrect resolutions for 16:10 external displays, unable to detect 16:9

Hey there all, this is my first post here. It looks like some people have had similar issues—particularly with an incomplete/incorrect list of resolutions being provided for external displays.
I am shopping around for an external display for my MacBook (my specs are included) and I tested a few different ones today, but encountered problems.
    - On a 22" ASUS monitor (sorry I don't have the model) using Mini-DVI to VGA, the native resolution (I assume 1680x1050) is not available, and most resolutions offered are 4:3 ratio (1600x1200 worked). The highest widescreen resolution listed was 1280x768.
    - Next I tried a 19" ASUS, this time 16:9, but the monitor would not display at all. The MacBook display would go blue as normal but then flicker, as if it could not detect the display. This also happened with a 24" BENQ monitor (also 16:9).
Wondering whether or not this was a problem with using VGA, I then bought a Mini-DVI to DVI adapter and tried again on the 19" and 24" (the 22" ASUS did not have a DVI-in) but the same flickering blue screen appeared, with nothing displayed on the monitor.
    These were my thoughts:
    1. My firmware is not up-to-date. I check in System Profiler and am running Boot ROM Version MB41.00C1.B00 and SMC Version (system): 1.31f0. These are definitely up-to-date for my model MacBook.
    2. Drivers are out of date. This does not seem likely as I am running OS X 10.5.7.
Other than that, I am at a loss! I haven't yet forked out the $49 to do phone support with Apple, that will be my next bet.
Has anyone had this problem, or have any ideas what I can try? Short of buying a new Unibody MacBook of course .
Thanks guys, hope you can help. Just let me know if you need more info about my computer.

It's unusual to strike out like that with three different monitors using two different adapters. On the other hand, with all the video issues that have been reported by others on these forums since the 10.5.7 update, it's not too surprising.
Is a 10.5.6 downgrade a possibility for you? For example, do you use Time Machine and can you in that case revert to a previous time when the MB was running 10.5.6? Perhaps that's not a great suggestion, but it would be something to try.
There is some remote chance, though somewhat unlikely given that three different monitors are involved, that the embedded display driver data (EDID) in each monitor is bad or incomplete. If you care to investigate that possibility, there is a program called SwitchRes X that allows you to snoop a monitor's EDID and turns it into a human readable text file.
One final suggestion would be to try yet one more monitor to see if any monitor can return a good result. One obvious choice would be an Apple monitor. If there is trouble when trying to connect to an Apple monitor, then that would certainly point to some problem in the MB's configuration or hardware. And not to cast aspersions on the brands you have already tried, but try another brand (if not Apple) that is perhaps more mainstream and known to be more Mac compatible and less firmly in the PC camp where plug-and-display drivers have never mattered very much and are very often botched by the monitor makers. Dell, Samsung and LG are three big brands that come to mind. Good luck.

  • External Display is incorrectly recognized as a TV.

Hi there. My MBA 2011 (Lion) is connected to ASUS VG236H with a MiniDP-HDMI cable. However I don't see the native resolution (1920*1080) or refresh rate (120Hz) available in the display setting. Instead I have to use 1080p and 60Hz which make the everything looks blurry on the screen. In System Information the external display is recognized as a TV whereas in fact it isn't.
Is there a way to solve this problem? Thank you all guys.

It seems to be growing every time I plug in my external monitor.  Now I have 4 desktops.
I am also using FCPX with this set up.  Maybe this is causing the problem?

  • Incorrect resolution displayed on mavericks external display 1080p

hi.  i am running mavericks on imac (intel, amd radeon HD6970 1024mb) and have just added an external display (asus VN279) which i've tried connecting through both mini displayport to displayport and then mini displayport to hdmi.  when i select the resolution i have an option for 1080p which is the native resolution of the monitor (and the one that i want to run), however, the resolution that actually comes on the screen is terrible and a totally different and lower one. any ideas on what could be wrong?
    thanks

    Hi,
Try to change the HDMI cable. I did display (X1 Carbon 20A7) 4K (3840 x 2160) on TCL (U49S7606DS) using very old but original Panasonic Viera HDMI 1.3a cable. I know it is strange and should not work but it works.
BTW: Here is what Lenovo officially says for the second generation of X1:
Graphics    Intel HD Graphics 4400 or 5000 in processor,
    external digital monitor support via Mini DisplayPort or HDMI (supports VGA analog monitor via Mini DisplayPort to VGA Monitor Cable); supports three independent displays;
    Max external resolution:
     3840x2160 (Mini DisplayPort)@30Hz;
     2880x1620 (HDMI)@60Hz
    Cheers,

  • W520 External Display Incorrect Size/Ratio

    Hi,
I have recently ran into problems with my W520 w/ Nvidia 2000m when connecting to an ViewSonic 1920*1080 external display. I just want to clarify that I have been using this setup for about 2 month with a HDMI to Displayport connector and it have worked fine.
Yesterday. I plugged in my Displayport connector before I started the computer. Usually, I start then plug in once startup is complete.  After doing so, the computer started up thinking my external is the main startup display. After startup, the proportion of the display is totaly wrong. I checked my resolution, it still says 1920*1080 but it seems that my thinkpad believes that the display's ratio is maybe 4:3 or 1:1 instead of 16:9. So, basically, everything on my external is elongated so I cant see the top or bottom of my desktop. It is like my graphics card think my external display is bigger than it really is.
I have tried to use Nvidia resize calibration, but it actually take away pixels from 1080 down to 810. I have also deleted by nvidia drive and reinstalled with no promise.
Any input is always appreciated and thanks in advance!

    hey dy58,
could you uninstall all graphic drivers. let windows install its generic drivers.
with the generic drivers install, try again your setup and see if the aspect ratio is proper.

  • IPad and external displays

I am trying to hook my IPad to an external display and it won't let me watch a purchased movie, saying that the device is not authorized. Any suggestions on getting it authorized?

Are you using the Apple certified iPad connector? (Similar or the same as this?)
If you are using that connector through HDMI, it should output to any display, without any sort of "not authorized" errors. In my experiences, I have only gotton those errors when the conneciton into the ipad is incorrect. For instance, plugging an iPhone 4S into an iHome from 2003 generally results in some hiccups because the docks have changed over time with different pincounts, etc.

  • X1 Carbon Gen 3 - maximum external display configuration?

    Hello,
I am considering the X1 Carbon Gen 3 for purchase.  However, I would like to know if it is possible to drive three external displays.
I currently have two running at 1920x1200 and one running at 2560x1440.
Looking at the notes on the OneLink Pro doc seems to indicate this is not possible with the X1 Carbon.
And while we are at it, same question for the T450S with the 90W Ultra Dock.  Looks like it is no problem for that configuration but I just want to check and confirm before I buy another machine.
    Thanks!

Received my X1 Gen3 and a OneLink Pro dock; here's what  I found:
    - The mini-DP connector on the X1 Gen3 can support two external monitors at full 2560x1600 resolution (Dell U3014), along with the built-in display, all active.  And, my U3014 monitors are in portrait orientation and the trackpad orientation is fully correct.  I didn't try using the HDMI at the same time.
    - The OneLink Pro dock will connect to a single U3014 monitor, but the system will not support connecting to a second U3014 over the DP output on the OneLink Pro dock (neither via an external DP hub, nor via the DP hub built into the U3014).  Seems the OneLink Pro dock has an internal DP hub and is using a DP terminal device to provide the DVI output, and this device seems like it can't be disabled even when not using the DVI output.  One significant problem: with a U3014 in portrait orientation connected to the dock, the laptop trackpad orientation was incorrect for the two monitors!
    - With the OneLink Pro dock connected (but no monitors connected to the dock), I can connect a separate mini-DP cable to the X1Gen3 and use the system on two U3014 monitors with the laptop closed.  This gets me close to what I need, though I wish Lenovo had a dual-DP dock (or a dock with a single DP output, no additional outputs) - the current situation requires two cables to the X1Gen3, but at least the DP connection is much better than a USB3 connection.

  • Can not properly view cover flow in full screen in external display

My mac is the new Mac book pro 15.4 inch screen and I connect my mac pro to external display e.g. Samsung LCD monitor 24 inches.
The bug is that I can not PROPERLY view full screen (in external display) for some application e.g. iTunes, and Front Row.
    - When I use iTunes, I can not properly view Cover Flow view in full screen (in the external display screen) except the case of mirror display.
    - For Front Row, I can not view full screen in external display but only my mac display.
However, for other DVD or VDO players, I can view movie on external display in full screen and I still be able to do other works on my mac screen.
Please let me know how to solve it.

How do I use an external display with a macbook pro?

Just buy the proper adapter cord, such as MiniDisplay port to HDMI for example.  Plug it in and it will be automatically recognized.  Use System Preferences > Displays to set options.

  • Connecting a MacBook to an external display or projector

I have tried to connect my MacBook to a projector and to a TV using the mini-DVI to Video adapter, both with the same poor results. Here's the steps I took:
    - Turned on the TV
    - Connected the video cable to the TV "video in"
    - Connected the video cable to the MacBook with the mini-DVI to vieo adapter
    - Opened the MacBook
    - Turned it on
The MacBook boots up, the MacBook resolution changes and the video on the TV is distorted, showing essentially three images of the MacBook display. Any attempt to adjust the resolution using system preferences just makes it worse.
Has anyone had success using a MacBook for presentations using either a TV or a projector and, if so, what procedure do you use to connect?

    Greetings from Hong Kong-
I have a major presentation to give in a couple of days and have NOT been successful connecting to an external display. I am starting to freak out. Any instructions would be helpful!

  • DVD player full screen on external display

I'm looking for a way to play my DVD full screen on my external display while I can work in other apps on the main screen. Preferrably with Apple DVD Player (OS X 10.7 Lion in my case). Any ideas? Hidden settings perhaps?
It's stuff like this makes feel let down by Apple. It's natural feature to want this like for instance when playing DVD on a big screen in front of an audience and prepare something on the main display for viewing.

I know I can do this already with VLC. For some discs that don't play well in VLC I'd prefer DVD Player though.

  • Disconnecting from external display changes background, disconnect server shares, inactivates desktop icons.

I have a user working on a MacBook Pro, Lion OS X 10.8.2, connected to an external display. When disconnecting from the external display the background picture changes, he can’t open documents saved to desktop, and the connection to the server shares is lost.  Rebooting does not resolve the issue while it is disconnected from the external display.  If he reconnects the MacBook back to the external monitor sometimes he has to reboot to get everything back to normal.  It almost seems like it is logging him into a different account or profile or something like that (please excuse my messy terminology as most of our users are still using PCs).  However if you look at what account is logged in, it is still the same account that he logged in with that morning.  The Mac is not authenticating to the network, just connecting to server shares.  Has anyone experienced this issue before and if so is there a fix for it?

The Mac has a long history of assuming that ANY adapter still present means the display is still present -- you need to remove the adapter as well as the cable, if present.
So my theory articulated above is that the disconnect is not registered correctly. This would mean that the second display is still seen as present. You could check this by invoking:
    System Preferences > Displays ...
and looking for the Arrange pane (shown above) which is ONLY present when multiple displays are attached. More detailed information can be found in About this Mac  > ( More info ) Graphics & Displays ...
... specifically the NAME of each attached display is shown or an indication (no display connected):

  • Disconnecting MacBook from external display

Is there anyway to disconnect the Applr LED external display from the MacBook pro without having to shut all the way down or is is safe to just yank the mini display out while running?

I've always just unplugged the display with no problem. The screen may go dark for a second as the system brings all the open windows over to the one screen (if you are using it as a second monitor instead of mirroring), but that's about all.
The only thing you have to watch out for is if you have any USB peripherals that are connected via the monitor. Then you need to be more careful.

  • HT4108 Unable to read a movie from my iPad to an external display

    Hi everyone,
I fear the worst here. I downloaded a TV show from iTunes and watched it fine on my external display (a full blown HD tv). Then I downloaded an HD movie from the iTunes store but my iPad2 says it's unable to play protected content. What gives ???
Is there a work-around to this or does my gut-feeling tell me Apple has restricted the use of an external display for some commercial reason ?
What's the point of buying full HD content if you can't watch it on full HD gear ?
Thanks for your thoughts on this !

    try this:

One workarwound is to do the following:
    1. Remove the digital content from iTunes (but keep the files)
    2. Rename all .m4v files to .mp4 files
    3. Add the files back to iTunes
This seems to fix the problem for me
    Hope this helps

  • How can I use an external display with my MBP lid closed and disconnected to power?

I know that I can use an external display when my MBP lid is closed and it is connected to power. I was wondering why it does not work when the power cable is removed.
I only use an external display when I am at home so my MBP acts like a Mac Pro or Mac Mini in that way, but it is not good to leave the battery charging constantly on a MBP so I want to disconnect the power and use external display and have the lid closed. Is this possible or do I have to leave my lid open when running on battery power?

I'm plugged into my wall socket at least 90% of the time - probably more. I always make sure that I take my MBP off mains about once every two weeks and let it run down to about 30-40% and then plug it back up. This keeps the ions flowing and the battery healthy. My MBP will be one year old on March 20, 2013, and my battery health is still at 99%. I run in clamshell mode most of the time now - since I bought a 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display. Only occasionally am I off mains - and then because I'm exercising my battery, usually.
Don't worry about running of mains most of the time - just be sure and unplug about once every two weeks (or twice a month) and let your battery dip to the 30-40% mark and you'll be fine.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
