PB's Airport Extreme card not staying connected - please help diagnose

My thread Airport extremem card can't hang onto wifi signal - what to do? in the "Getting Online" forum hasn't generated a solution, so I'm trying here too.
In the past few weeks, my airport signal bounces around and randomly disconnects me. It goes from no signal (indicated) to 3 bars then bounces around. It occurred with my own Airport Extreme card (in the PB) and my Belkin router, and the library's wifi.
The problem may have started after an erase-and-install of Panther with an upgrade using the combo 10.3.9. The only security updates I see receipts or packages of are SecUpd2005-004Pan.pkg, SecUpd2007-002Pan.pkg, SecurityUpdate2004-10-27Pan.pkg.
The usual troubleshooting (Permissions, Chrons, Disk Warrior) didn't solve anything. Since first posting about this problem I've reapplied the 10.3.9 combo. I tried changing the channel on the router and setting it to Protected Mode.
"Protected Mode
NOTE: In most situations, best performance (throughput) is achieved with Protected Mode OFF. If you are operating in an environment with HEAVY 802.11b traffic or interference, best performance may be achieved with Protected Mode ON."
I then installed Airport 4.2 update because Software Updater presented it as an option.
Until today iStumbler and MacStumbler were showing 29-35% signal strength with no noise. As of today, iStumbler is showing intermittent noise of ~14-21%, but MacStumbler is not. (It was constant when I tried channel 9 and changing the router's back to 10 made it intermittent.)
The router is serving a desktop computer via ethernet so I can't move it. I have reset the router and cable modem several times with no improvement.
Does anyone have any ideas what I can do? Thanks.

I would have come back to edit this, to say that the dropping signal problem came back since the 10.3.9 combo but I couldn't. The darn wifi signal was lost for something like 7 minutes.
The PB was sitting in exactly the same place and toggling airport on and off wouldn't reconnect it. It generated many lines in the console. Anyone know what this means?

Try popping out the SIM card and turn off the phone.
Pop in the SIM card once again and turn on the phone, make sure that the SIM card is placed and seated perfectly in the tray!
Tell me how did you unlock your phone!?

  • Airport extreme card not working with leopard / G5

I just upgraded my PowerMac to leopard (G5 dual 1.8, 3 gigs of ram, 250 GB HD). I bought it new in December 2004 from apple. Previously I had been using a USB adapter to connect to my wireless internet at home (Linksys WRT54G). This device does not support leopard so I got an airport extreme card from gainsaver.com.
The Airport extreme card is configured properly as far as I know but it will only connect to my network for about 5 seconds then it drops. The USB adapter worked perfectly in the same spot and my macbook right next to it works fine as well.
    1. Could it be a bad Airport extreme card?
    2. Is this a known issue? And possibly be resolved with the 10.5.2 update?
It is a fresh Leopard install with no updates as I can not connect it to the internet to get them. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi, I have the same machine (4 ram slots?) have you got the connector for the aerial that connects to the motherboard attached to your airport card. Mine works a treat.

  • AirPort Extreme card not compatible with Mac Pro???

    Hey,
I recently purchased my Mac Pro without thinking to include any hardware for connecting to a wireless network.
I have recently moved into a new apartment which I am keen to join to a wireless network which has just been set up by my roommate for his PC and Laptop.
I was going to buy an AirPort Extreme card, but I have read that it is not compatible with the Mac Pro. Yet when I looked at the configure process for a new mac it was listed as one of the devises offered for wireless networking!!
    I am very confused...
I was wondering if anyone could help me, i just need to know what hardware i will need and how it would be installed.
thanks, all help will be greatly appreciated!
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

the mac pro takes a slightly different airport express card. you have to purchase it at the retail store and have them install it. in my experience they will not allow you to purchase one and install it yourself due to the difficulty of installing it. best thing to do take your macpro into a apple retail store and see what they can do.

  • Airport Extreme Card Not Working Properly (Web Browsing Slow)

    Hello people of apple discussions,
I have the original MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.5.7 installed on it. And I have a problem, my airport extreme card is not functioning properly like when I go on the internet, it comes up with the server "www.google.com" cannot be reached or the same with Yahoo! Back when it had 10.4 it was functioning properly with very high speeds. But, all the other PCs in the house gets good internet even my iPhone and the router is functioning properly. It's been like this since for about 6-8 months and i am very upset with my mac!:|So can I have some help or any suggestions!

Have you tried contacting your ISP? Sometimes they can help you optimize your settings. Such as DNS server numbers. I had a simullar problem and found out my DNS settings were wrong.
Do you have other computers that use the wireless single? If not you might look into your router to see if maybe something is wroung with it. You can always go to a wifi hotspot or a friends house and see how the connection is there. If it seems normal then you know it is your ISP or your router. If not then it might be a laptop problem.

  • Airport express will not stay connected

I have a new Airport Express (802.11n) and it will not stay connected to my MacBook Pro. Any suggestions?

I have returned the Express and reinstalled my Extreme. I found a "tip" page that suggested to put a sheet of aluminum foil behind the Express to concetrate the signal inside the house. This crude idea has not solved the problem. My MacPro is a 2 GHz Intel Core i7. Any further suggestions?

  • Airport Extreme card won't connect

eMac 1.25 GHz (USB) trying to connect to Linksys WRT54G router
Purchased an Airport Extreme card on eBay.
It sees router immediately, but when I try to connect it gives the extremely informative message:
" There was an error joining the Airport network "(name)"
I have a number of other Macs and PCs and my Blackberry and my son's iPhone that can successfully connect, but not this beast. I have reinstalled the card several times with no success. I'm guessing it's ok since it sees my router immediately. I've entered the password 100% correctly. I've even reconfigured the router not to require a password. Same thing. In desperation, I've even tried reconfiguring the eMac to use only 1GB RAM after seeing that suggested for a similar iBook problem. No help.
So... how do I determine what the "error" was that's preventing connection? And how do I fix it?
    Any suggestions welcome.
    Thanks,
    Rich

As this is not too likely to be an problem specific to eMacs, you may get more responses by posting in the Airport forums here:

Note there are sub-forums shown at the top of the page for the different Airport version. Find the one that best describes what you have and try that area.

  • Airport Extreme Card can't connect to wireless network

    Hello All,
I recently installed an Airport Extreme Card into my PowerMac G5, but am having difficulty connecting to the existing wireless network. The card appears to be installed correctly, and Airport comes up and says it's running, but doesn't see any available wireless networks. An iMac 5 feet away (and no closer to the airport extreme base station) connects perfectly. With all the info about the antenna, i've triple checked to make sure the antenna is completely installed in the card so I don't think that is the issue. It's part no. M8881LL/A Model No. A1028 and it's installed in a PowerMac Dual 2Ghz PowerPC G5. I'm wondering if there is a compatibility issue? Any comments?
    Thanks for the help.

    Hi Duane,
Thanks for the welcome and the reply. The PowerMac is an older one so I don't have the external antenna, and have looked around for one with no luck. I just ordered one and it will be here tomorrow so I'm hoping you saved the day and that's the ticket. Thanks so much for the help! I'll update this again if that solves my problem, but just wanted to say thanks... i'll know more on Monday.

  • Airport Extreme will not auto connect after poewr out with USB Hub!

    Hi all,
I have just purchased the Airport Extreme and have it connected to my ADSL router. All works fine but if the airport looses power (as the household power went off momentarily today) then once it powers back up it will not connect to the internet unless I unplug the USB hub connected to it first.
    Anyone with similar experiences?

    No
Your issue may have something to do with your ADSL router and/or ISP carrier when you have power interruption.
I would contact Apple to take advantage of your free 90 days of tech support by phone since your product is "new." Let them tell you what the problem is.

  • AirPort Extreme Card not being recognized

I installed an AirPort Extreme Card into my powerbook G4 15" laptop. I also installed the software from the CD that came with the card. Everything went just like the instructions set out. When I start my computer and go into the system profiler it doesn't show that I have an airport card installed. Also if I launch the AirPort Setup Assistant it claims I have no card installed.
How can I determine the card is installed correctly and working?

Which PowerBook G4 do you have?
Some PowerBook G4s require the original AirPort card.
Others require the AirPort Extreme card.

  • Airport Extreme Card for power mac G5 help!!

I have a late 2005 Power mac G5. I got an Airport Extreme wireless card. I put the card in there, and there are 2 wires i presume or have read to presume they are used for the antenna. I attempt to put 1 wire in the port on the back of the card. The wire and the port on the back of the card do not match or plug in flush.
Then i remember I have the "T" shaped antenna and attempt to plug that into the back port of the airport extreme card. again it does not really fit flush in the back of the card.
What do i need to acquire to connect this card to either the wires or "T" shaped antenna. Ive seen some installation instructions and notice that some of the wires have a more suitable connector. Please help! Thanks, ~adam~

That computer accepts a combined AirPort and Bluetooth card; the standalone AirPort Extreme card can't be used with it even though it may fit onto the logic board. Click here for more information.

  • TS4597 AirPort base station not seen or "An unexpected error occurred" appears in AirPort Utility 6.3 - It did the above steps and cannot get airport utility to allow access to the Airport extreme in order to reconfigure please help

I tried following the article's instructions by going into System Preferences / Network and changing the configure ipv6 tab to Link local only and I STILL am getting the same error. Can someone please advise how to get this ariport extreme back online and configured

I'm in a frustrating predicament with this error, so if folks have any suggestions, that would be greatly appreciated...
A few days ago my internet stopped working as best i know out of the blue (3rd gen Airport Extreme with a couple iPhones, iPad, Apple TV's, Mac's (one with Mavericks) on it).  In trying to fix it, I powered down everything and reset the router.  When the router is initializing (seen through the Airport utility), the internet starts working again on the Mac in which I'm running the Airport utility. (a browser in background loads a previously unloadable webpage).  I'm then left with a screen where the Airport utility is waiting for me to enter set-up info:
If I leave the Airport Utility in this state and don't hit next, my internet works fine on my Mac.  If I set-up this info, however, my internet no longer works (in Airport Utility the Internet globe has a orange circle saying internet disconnected) and I get a screen saying "An unexpected error occured.  Try again."  I've tried toggling a number of router settings, restarting the router, but nothing seems to fix it.
I've taken the router to Apple, where they were able to create a network fine with the router.  I also bought a new AE router, and tried an old AE express router, but all attempts get the same error.  I've also tried using the iOS Airport utility, but that doesn't seem to help.  I've tried the older version (5.6) of Airport Utility run on a non-Mavericks Mac, but that didn't help.
I had a ISP technician come out, but they basically said the plug (we don't have a modem, but just a ethernet plug in our apartment)  in which you're getting the internet from us is working, and it's your router.  They're diagnostics said the router is 'throwing off a bunch of errors.'  That being said, they've confirmed the setting on the AE are okay (as far as they know...).
Any thoughts here?  I'm not especially network-proficient, but searching around has pointed me to potential issues with mavericks, IPv6, and the latest version of the Airport Utility.
    I'm desperate - please help!
    Much thanks in advance.

  • Airport extreme card won't connect to internet. Says cable unplugged.

I have an aiport extreme card in my emac. It was installed around a year and a half ago and has workd fine until yesterday. it suddenly says that it is not configured. It also says the antenna cable is unplugged and that it is turned off. I tried to trouble shoot it with internet connection assistant which says cable is unplugged and aiport is off. I have taken the card out and reinstalled it and reattached the cable mutiple times to no avail. And yes, I know how hard it is to push in. Any ideas? Thanks. Shannon

  • Airport Express - Extreme Base Station - MacBook Connection PLEASE HELP!

Ok, i thought i had a pretty good idea of what i was doing with my mac stuff but apparently not, can someone talk me through how to set up the following - i've google and searched forums far and wide and cannot seem to find a simple walk through guide, even read the manual. The Airport Express manual online still says you can only stream to one device at a time.
I have an Airport Extreme Base Station broadcasting a DSL connection from a router - works a treat. I also have 1TB WD Hard Drive plugged into the Base Station which works as a shared AirDisk - also works a treat. I have two stereos at each end of the house and got my hands on two Airport Express devices (Models: A1084 and A1088).
I've gone through every possible scenario in setting these up to join the network but once they're 'joined' there no sign of them, and they no longer show up in my Airport Utility so can no longer configure them, thus having to reset them and start again.
I've tried a) setting up a WDS network, the base station as the main and the express' units as remote. No show in iTunes and no real show of being on the network at all; and b) tried leaving the existing network as is and joining the express' to that, again, they supposedly 'join' (i assume, only because they no longer show up as their own network) but do not show up in iTunes. As far as I've tested and found, I have the latest of all versions of software / firmware available, including Leopard, iTunes and Airport Utility... HELP! It's driving me MAD! And a thousand thank you's in advance...

Thanks for your help, after trouble shooting to no end, I've discovered it has something to do with the WEP password I was using and after reading through many a support article I found this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2098?viewlocale=en_US - however, the $ sign doesn't seem to work to when setting up the Express' (even tried making the password the very one used in that article) and when I set the network up initially, it seemed my flatmates PC's only joined the network if I used a WEP password, rather than a WPA that i'd rather use.
Any suggestions here? Do I have to use a WEP password to let Windows join?

  • Fully Connected to AirPort Extreme, But With No Internet (PLEASE HELP!)

I have spent my Labor Day trying to figure out what is wrong with my wireless connection to no avail. I am entirely frustrated and would appreciate any helpful advice that can be offered.
    Here's the deal:
Yesterday afternoon, the two computers on my wireless network (an iMac PowerPC G4 and a Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop) lost connection to the Internet. We had lost power earlier in the day, but didn't have any issues immediately after it was restored. A few hours later, it just stopped.
Today, I started troubleshooting to figure out how to fix it. The Dell had no trouble finding the network and connecting, but it was only connecting "locally." Same with mine. We've also got a Nintendo Wii connected wirelessly, but it was also not working. Lastly, we have an HP Photosmart C4280 printer plugged into the AirPort's USB. Despite not being able to get on the Internet or restore Wi-Fi to the Wii, we are still able to print without issue (from both computers).
At one point, I got Internet back on my iMac, but I kept messing around with the network settings in the hopes of getting everything back to normal and lost it again. I've been mainly playing around three different settings: the AirPort Admin Utility (changing Channels in the AirPort tab, checking boxes in the Network tab, etc.), the AirPort Setup Assistant (messing around with the Wireless Security), and the Network Control Panel (clicking things I don't understand in the TCP/IP tab, etc.).
At first, I thought the issue was with my security settings, so I tried setting up the AirPort without a password, and still could not connect with the iMac, Dell, or Wii. In a last-ditch effort, I went out and bought a Linksys Simultaneous Dual-N Band Wireless Router, which restored the Internet to the iMac, Dell, and Wii. Problem is, I love the AirPort (and do not want to sacrifice wirelessly printing through its USB).
I am completely frustrated! If anyone has any suggestions whatsoever, please help me out. It would be greatly appreciated!!
    Have a great night!
    TK

Ok, I'm going to assume that you are using the newer AirPort Utility and not the older AirPort Admin Utility that originally came on the CD with your AEBS.
If this is correct, the following would be the basic settings:
Either connect to the AEBS's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then, using the AirPort Utility in Manual Setup, check these settings:
    AirPort - Base Station tab
o Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o Base Station Password: <enter the desired administrator's password, the default is "public">
    o Verify Password: <re-enter the desired password>
    o Set time automatically: (optional)
o Allow configuration over Ethernet WAN port: (optional)
AirPort - Base Station - Base Station Options
    o Contact: (optional)
    o Location: (optional)
    AirPort - Wireless tab
o Wireless Mode: Create a wireless network
o AirPort Network Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    o Radio Mode: 802.11b/g compatible
    o Channel: Automatic
    o Wireless Security: None
AirPort - Wireless - Wireless Options
    o Multicast Rate: 2 Mbps
    o Transmit Power: 100%
o Create a closed network (unchecked)
o Use Interference Robustness: Not enabled
    Internet - Internet Connection tab
    o Connect Using: Ethernet
    o Configure: Using DHCP
    o DNS Server(s): (optional)
    o Domain Name: (optional)
    o DHCP Client ID: (optional)
o Ethernet WAN Port: Automatic (Default)
o Connection Sharing: Share a public IP address
    Internet - DHCP tab
o DHCP Range: <leave default or enter desired range>
o DHCP Beginning Address: <leave default or enter desired beginning address>
o DHCP Ending Address: <leave default or enter desired ending address>
o DHCP Lease: <leave default or enter desired lease duration>
    o DHCP Message: (optional)
    o LDAP Server: (optional)
    Internet - NAT tab
o Enable default host at: (unchecked)
o Enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol: (unchecked)
Once you verified that you can get Internet access for all of your computers, you should secure your wireless network. To do so, I suggest that you make these changes:
    AirPort - Wireless tab
o Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal or WPA2 Personal
o Wireless Password: <enter desired wireless encryption password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter desired wireless encryption password>
