PB takes 3 minutes boot. What's going on?

My wife's three-year-old PB G4 (15" 1.0GHz, 1.25GB RAM/60GB HD) is operating just fine once it's actually booted up, but the blasted thing takes between 2.5 and 3 minutes to boot. (The chime comes on maybe 6 or 7 seconds after we press the power button.)
I'm not exactly sure when this began happening, but I did a complete reinstall of Tiger and got the same results. Then I installed Leopard about three weeks ago. Same slow boot time.
I've done all the usual checks, etc. (using Onyx). I've made the RAM is compatible (it is).
Any idea what this could be?

Hi, mbnwl, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Your system is taking so long to boot that I suspect a failing hard drive. Start up from your Panther Installer Disk 1 and open Disk Utility from the Installer menu. Click to select the line in the left pane of DU that shows the hard drive manufacturer's name and model number. Click the First Aid tab if it isn't already selected. Check the SMART status of the drive near the bottom of the DU window. If it's "Failing", back up everything important on the drive to other media immediately and replace the drive; it's dying. If it's "Verified", the drive is most likely OK, and your slow startup may be caused by a hard disk directory problem. Run the Repair Disk routine in Disk Utility repeatedly until you get two successive runs with no problems found, then start up normally from your hard drive and see whether things have changed any. Post back with results.

I'm not sure what's happening here. my new mac book pro does this every time I try booting it up and just when I think it's frozen (after about two minutes) it gives me the login window. not a lethal issue but still disturbing.

You should start up from the Mac OS X Installation Disk, from the Installer menu, run Disk Utility. Run both Repair and Repair Permissions routines on the First Aid tab. You can run Disk Utility after starting normally, but you cannot run the Repair routine.
If that does not resolve the problem, try resetting the PRAM

Losing the ability to drag objects after 30 minutes. What's going on?

Hi,
I'm having a very strange problem. In InDesign, I'm losing the ability to drag objects around with the mouse after about 30 minutes of using the program. Everything else works fine, but I simply cannot perform this function. The box highlights, but simply will not drag. I can use the arrow keys to nudge the boxes over, I can resize and do other things with no issue except this. Additionally, other Adobe applications start to crash when I want to drag things, such as Illustrator.
If I log out and log back in, it's fine again for another half hour. I tried trashing the preferences, updating Creative Cloud, and nothing has worked.
This is seriously damaging my workflow and hindering my ability to complete my work. I have a hard deadline coming up, and I need this solved fast. I'm not on an SSD so logging out and back in takes 5-7 minutes for things to get up and running again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm running OSX Mavericks on a 2013 iMac with the full Adobe CC suite installed.
A few things that may be clues:
I first noticed this problem with an out of date InDesign: everything worked fine, BUT when I started to drag an object, InDesign would hard crash, just close completely. After I updated Creative Cloud, now I simply cannot drag, but the program stays functional (other than this essential action).
When this problem is in effect, Illustrator hard crashes, only when I try to drag an object (the problem seems to be uniquely associated with dragging)
Nothing 'triggers' this issue, I'm simply working on a file and then I no longer can drag things around with the mouse. I log out, log back in, and everything is fine for a bit.

Ah! Unfortunately, I'm on a company computer and can't just try these things myself. If that's the issue, I can ask our admins and they'll do it, but I want to make sure I've exhausted anything that could be a small fix.
Is that a shot in the dark, or are you thinking there's a reason a clean install is the solution? Thanks for the help.

IBooks Author crashes every two minutes. What's going on?

iBooks author crashes literally every few minutes, and the error message reads "iBooks author failed while using the iBooks Author plug-in. Click here to re-open".
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app itself. I'm running the latest release of Mavericks.

iBooks Author was updated to 2.1.2 today... download and update to see if the bug fixes solve your problem, if not report back here please.

go to your settings, and first go to Safari and delete your history by scrolling down to "clear history and website data". Then go to the advanced settings and select ""website data". It should show 0 bytes. If not, clear again.
next go to iTunes and App Store in settings, and touch your Apple ID, the select sign out.
AFter you you sign out of your ID, restart your iPad by holding down the power button and home key simultaneously until you see the apple logo after the restart.
when you are powered up, go to iBooks. You should get a message that you need to sign in to sync up your books. Sign in, and that should do it.

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

Short Answer: Yes
When they set up facetime, they either used an apple ID, or (for iphone only) their phone number. You call using one of them. An apple id linked email address in my opinion is simpler, as you don't need to worry about country codes and the like. (I have never tried to facetime anyone out of the country, so I will admit I am not sure what you do about country codes.)

After changing the battery in my iphone 4s, the phone will not boot up. I only see the apple and when it sits for a few minutes, a code shows above it. What is going on? Did I damage the phone by replacing the battery?

I can only see the apple on the screen and when left for a few minutes.... 10 lines of numbers and codes show up at the top of the screen. Did I ruin the iphone by replacing the battery? Was a simple switch so I don't understand what is going on. Have never had one of these before.

In attempt to burn blu-ray, I get QuickTime error 0. Takes hours to export a 7 minute movie from timeline, then get notice it fails. What's going on here?

New problem just started 24 hours ago. When I try to export from the time line to create a QuickTime file, a 7 minute movie on time line takes 3 hours to export and then the export fails, where as a few days ago, that export would take about 10 minutes at most. I get the same failure notice when I try to share to blu-ray, DVD, or Vimeo. Tried to use compressor, no such luck as compressor failed to make a .mov file. I get QuickTime error 0 message about 5 minutes into trying to share to Blu-Ray now. Does anyone know what is going on here? I'm running latest update of Snow Leopard on an intel Mac Pro and the latest update to Final Cut Pro X. I've also installed QT 7.6.6 to use in creating time lapse movie files.

Same problem here, too. Final Cut Pro X 10.0.3 on OS 10.6.8. However, it is only doing it on ONE of my projects. A 4-second test project burned successfully.
I'm actually going to use iDVD to burn copies for a few people, so I only need the movie file from FCPX.
Would someone please post best export settings for use on a DVD? In FCPX, the project is in HD (1080p) with all media optimized to ProRes 442. I know it will have to be down-sampled to DVD resolution, but I've always been curious to know what settings will result produce the best possible quality in DVD resolution.

Yes. The battery appears to be shot and in need of a replacement. This can either be done by Apple or a third party repair company.

First of all, why did you say yes to Nero Back up before researching what it does with files already on the HDD? When I install Nero, the Back Up is the first thing I disable, it is a nagging pain, there are much better backup programs available. There are several file recovery programs out there to recover deleted files, that is, if that is what happened. Also, if you haven't overwritten the files, so you should be able to find them.

In "storage", it says that apps take up 290 gB. What's going on?

Hey guys, I was was recently checking my storage on my MacBook Air 13" (not retina) and saw that the "applications" were taking up over 290 gB of storage; 296.28 gB to be exact. The computer doesn't even hold that much flash storage... What's going on? I purchased it in December. It was an open box one at Best Buy because there was a chip near the hinge. It has the traditional 4gB of RAM, OX Yosemite, with a 1.4 GHz intel core i5. I've only downloaded a couple apps, such as League of Legends, Audacity, and the Olive Tree Bible app. That's it...

Basic troubleshooting techniques for any problem
Restart the computer = joy?
Reset the router = joy?
Restart the computer in Safe Mode = joy?
ask yourself "What changed immediately preceding the onset of the problem?" = Anything... hardware, software, cabling, environment (interference source)
