PB Ti 1.0 Ghz, Making a complete back-up copy of HD to a 64GB SSD HD 2 boot

Ok, I'm a newbie to the whole world of macs. I just recently got my hands on an awesome running PB titanium 1.0 Ghz. I am finally making the switch from a PC to a Mac. So I have this PB and I have a Transcend 64GB SSD (a solid state Multi Level Cell IDE hard drive) I got the hard drive on ebay for $102 bucks a week ago.
Anyhoo, my question for anybody who can help me out. (I totally appreciate the help in advance) I have the ide to usb connector for it and would like to make an exact carbon copy of the internal hard drive to this drive via USB. I tried once doing this myself using the Super Duper program. I copied the whole drive to the new one (took almost 7 hours to complete) but upon installing the new hard drive and booting up I got the folder with the question mark on it. Can somebody explain to me in detail what I need to do to not only make a carbon copy of the existing hard drive but also make it possible for the new drive to boot on it's own once installed ? Am I using the right program to do this ? If somebody has done this before please let me know what type of settings I need to enter in order for this new drive to boot on it's own. Your help once again will be most greatly appreciated !!
I'm really just experimenting with this PB for now as far as the new drive goes. I figured that I would try to use this SSD drive if possible in it, basically thinking that since it is solid state (No moving parts inside of drive) that it would not only speed this thing up a bit but also make the battery last a bit longer. I don't know exactly what type of speed increase I might see or how much longer battery time I would get from it but I figured for the 102 bucks I got the drive for that this would be a great drive to install into this PB. If I can't figure out a way to use it in my PB then I guess I'll have to resort back to what I didn't want to do, basically putting XP Pro on it and using it in my Acer labtop just to see the speed increase or whatever else it may have to offer.
The main thing about using this SSD drive in my PB is really just knowing I don't ever have to worry about the hard drive itself going Kaput on me as far as it having no moving parts inside, that this hard drive will last for years and years to come, and of course with the awesome mac os tiger operating system on it, I figured that using this HD in the PB first would be my best bet of getting the most out of it. Ok, enough of my writings cause I can just keep going and going. anyhoo, anybody that can help me out once again will be more than greatly appreciated. Thanx again for the reply from anybody who can help me, Jason

Hey Eww, I have now secure erased the drive and went back into disk utility to re-format the drive. I reformatted the drive to Mac Os Extended, and opted out of the journal part of it all, as upon reading other posts about this, that I believe it really only applies to servers or back-up from a power outage or hardware failure, which hopefully I don't have to worry about anything of the latter, basically why I'm trying to use this drive in the first place.
Now that I see that I am on my third try, I am definitely going to go and get me one of those firewire to ide converters, probably from micro center tomorrow, as I know I'll probably have more use for it than I thought I would have imagined. I will make sure that it does have the oxford chipset in it or I won't buy it from there and just turn to ebay to get it from the guy you passed me the link on.
I wrote the guy to the link u posted. The ebay item had ended already but he sent me an email to his online store directly, so thank you again for the link, very much appreciated.
I am in the middle of trying this out one more time, hopefully the third time is a charm and if I am not successful this time I am just going to take everything in to a local computer store that works on macs and just pay them to do it. From what I have read about this SSD multi level cell HD, that I should not install an operating system on it from discs, I take it because of the properties of the drive itself. If this is not correct in your opinion please let me know, I am always open to options on how to make this successful.
This seems to be such an easy task to do, but just like life, somehow, someway, it just finds a way to be difficult. I would say it's just my luck but I don't even go that route anymore. So yeah, I am going to give this one more try and if once again I am not successful I will call it quits and just pay somebody else to do it not the route I wanted to go since it seems like such an easy task but if I do have to go that route I hope they don't try to sock it to me, or I'll probably just end up leaving the original drive in it and go back to what I do know how to do, going back to my dang windows pc and formatting it to use in my pc based labtop. wish me luck, as I see already I'm going to need alot of it.
Thanx again for all your help, I will let you know of the outcome this time around. ttyl, Jason

  • Can I add a processor to my single 1.8 Ghz, making it a dual?

Can I add a processor to my single 1.8 Ghz, making it a dual? If so, where can I find installation instructions to do that? Thanks.

I've heard from various places that the G5 boards (excluding the 1.8GHz G5, 600MHz FSB) share a common design. However, the SP ones lack a physical socket for the second processor even though the board traces are there. That opens up possibilities if you're adventurous.
I recommend selling your current G5 and using the money towards a dual or quad G5 if you're not too attached to it. It's the simplest solution and would result in a faster system overall.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to a failed backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showning, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

Are the PDFs and ibooks on your computer's iTunes ? If so then you should be able to re-sync them, if not then you can re-download ibooks for free as long as they are still available in the store and you use the same iTunes account as you originally used to buy them : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519 . The backup doesn't contain the contents of the ibooks app, so for them to be restored to the device they needed to be in your iTunes library.

  • HT201318 Do I need enough storage to completely back up my entire hard drive?

I need to have a complete back up of my hard drive, but I also need to stream my videos and photos so they take up all my hard drive space and slow my machine.  I want this to happen directly between my iphone and macbook.

Get another drive for your streaming and storage needs. Use another drive for your backup needs. Backup and storage should not be combined on the same drive if you value your data.

  • I backed up with an external drive, but it only backed up part, do I erase the complete back up and start again?

My system is OS 10.8.5 Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, storage available 375 GB out of 500 GB. Yesterday I tried to back up with the Seagate Backup Plus Drive with 1.5 TB using the Time Machine. The backup started, said it would take 3 hours, but ended at 2 hours when the computer went to sleep when I had to leave the desk. When reviewing "About this Mac",it appears under Macintosh HD the amount of GB for Audio 20.53GB, Movie18.66 GB, Photo 4.56 GB, Apps 11.92 GB, Backups zero KB, Other 64.54 GB on the same menu below, appears the External Seagate Back up plus but with Zero KB on Audio, Movies, Photos, Apps, Backups 74.48 GB, zero KB in Other zero KB.I believe that for some reason the back up was not finished complete and only copied 74.48 GB. My question is how do I erase this and start over so I can have a complete first back up with everything. If I did something wrong, I do not get where it was. Thank you so much.

You let the computer go to sleep. When it did then so did the backup drive. The first bit of advice is do not use the software provided with the Seagate backup drive. The second bit of advice is to completely re-partition and format the drive.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Clone Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Finally, get a good backup utility to incrementally update the clone.

My time machine says it need more room to complete back up, how do i make more room?

    Delete the old backups..
There is a reason though for this to happen. Tell us what model Time Capsule you are using and what size disk it has .. how much free space is available and how much is now required. If you upgraded to Mavericks it probably needs to do a whole new  backup and simply doesn't have the space .. nor can it delete the old backup.

  • Excessively long initial complete back up

Recently purchased a new iMac (27") and connected my Airport +Time capusule. I have transfered all my documents and most of my programs from a previous iMAC and and am now ready for a complete back up. However, after initiating time capusule,  the dialog box comes up and says it is going to take over 10,000 days to back up 175 GB of info. Is this a sign my airport/tie capusle is getting ready to crash? Airport/Time Capsule is is only a couple years old. Should not be dying on me yet.

2years old should still be ok.. they do get a bit dicky around 3years.. good time for replacement.
But what exactly does Airport + Time Capsule mean?
If you have an airport as main router and the TC wireless bridged to it.. it would not at all surprise me that TM estimates several years for the backup.. it won't ever be as bad as that.. but slow for sure.
Do not double hop wireless.. ever.
Do not use the TC in join wireless mode.. ever. Avoid extend wireless if you want to use the hard disk over wireless, unless you directly wireless connect to it.
We strongly recommend an ethernet connection for the first backup. You can do it in full isolation overnight.. your 175GB should take about 3hours over ethernet. Once you complete the first backup.. small incremental backup are fine over wireless.. although try to do it direct.
By direct I mean the Mac is wireless linked to the TC .. not via a different router. And if you can be close then you can use 5ghz which is 3x times faster than 2.4ghz.

  • NEW COMPLETE BACK UP THAT DELETED ALL PREVIOUS BACK UPS

I have a 1TB Time Capsule that I bought in October 2008. I have been using it with Time Machine for back ups. Earlier this week Time Machine gave me a message that it wanted to do a new complete back up that would delete my previous back ups. I thought this was weird, but it said it would improve reliability. It would not do any back ups until I agreed. I didn't want to start it at that time because I wanted to update to Mountain Lion before getting rid of any back ups. Too late! I have updated to Mountain Lion and gotten all the updates released this week, meanwhile the back up started and delete nearly 4 years worth of back ups! Has this happened to anyone else?

I'm having the same issue, but my TC is only 4 months old. I'm glad I have a separate external hard drive that will do backups, but it was supposed to alternate between the TC and external drive.
Everything was working fine until upgrading to ML....
This is a screenshot that I just took and the Data (TC) drive has been sitting like this since last night when it wanted to do a brand new backup and delete all previous ones. Left the computer on all night because it said that the backup would take approximately 17 hours. Geez...

  • VOTE for a Complete Back Up Now!!!

If you want to be able to COMPLETELY restore your personal data and ALL applications from your PC....If you miss the complete backup of the old OS....If you want to be able to restore your phone if it is lost or broken, THEN VOTE HERE by posting in this thread:  “Palm, we respectfully request that you provide a complete backup solution for WebOS.”
I also suggest that, if you feel it is important, let Palm know.  WebOS is awesome, let's make it better.
Here is the message I sent to the Palm feedback site (http://www.palm.com/us/company/feedback.html):
I cannot believe that WebOS has an incomplete back-up.  This incomplete backup is a major step backwards.  I have experienced real disappointment and frustration with the loss of data and I’ve only owned my Pre for a month.  I love WebOS, but it doesn’t matter how good an OS is if you cannot back up data completely.  A complete back up should restore the device like an image of a drive.  In the same way a hotsync with the Treo did.  PLEASE Palm, this is a deal breaker for me as I spend hours inputting data into third party applications.  I cannot have a phone that doesn’t completely back up.  In this day and age, data backup is a first priority...I’m astonished at this oversight.   Why would anyone go from an OS that has complete back up capabilities to one that does not?
This item is a deal breaker for me and I’d rather not have to shop for a new phone.  I’d like to see WebOS thrive, but without a complete back up tool I don’t believe that the smartphone market is the right application for WebOS.  This solution should not be complicated.

  • Disable 5 Ghz on AE3000 completely.

    Hi there,
Yeah I did read the forums about this, however, my question is a bit different.
My dad purchased the AE3000 to work with his Oppo BDP-103 Blu-Ray player, because the other wireless dongle he had didn't work flawlessly, as in very slow performance. But when we plug in the Linksys AE3000 it says USB error on the Oppo.
Now I think it's caused by the fact it uses auto-switch function and the Oppo does not support 5 Ghz.
I am wondering now, if it's possible for Linksys tech, to disable the autoswitching or 5 Ghz completely from the AE3000 with custom firmware or something? I think it's possible, however I don't know if Linksys is willing to do this. I hate to return the Linksys and go for a different brand which only supports 2.4 Ghz (single band).
And before anyone points the finger to me; I did look it up on a famous Dutch hardware site (tweakers.net) and it says about the AE3000 that it did NOT have 5 Ghz support: http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/319978/linksys-ae3000/specificaties/
    I quote: 5GHz ondersteuning (= support): Nee (=No)
So is it possible to get custom firmware which disables the switching between 2.4 / 5 Ghz or disable the 5 Ghz completely in general?

What I know is that, Linksys AE3000 is designed to work with Windows (XP, Vista, and W7) computers. It doesn't have a Blu-Ray driver. Probably it's the reason why it is not working properly in your end. Was this working fine before? Also, AE3000 is a dual-band Wireless-N USB adapter. This means, you may use it to connect to your 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network. Just make sure to use different name for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless settings. This is if you have a dual band router. If you have the same name for both wireless settings, device(s) might get confused on where to connect to.

  • Firefox crashes my entire Windows operating system making it completely unstable

    Hey guys,
I've had some serious problems with Firefox for over a month now on my main computer. It basically crashes my whole OS and freezer for which I either have to restart and stop using the browser and use Chrome instead which I absolutely hate. This situation has gone so much worse that I've stopped using my main HP and instead using a crappy Netbook these days. I downloaded a new version of Firefox from the website and installed it on top of the already installed version to see whether there's a fix but I've found no luck. I was planning to completely format my system but I need all the passwords and tons of important book marks backed up for which I cant do because everytime I open Firefox, the whole OS crashes and freezes down. Can someone help me with a solution as soon as possible, this is going way outta control now. :/ I'm posting this infact from my Netbook.
