PB TiBook broken - should I fix or get a new 15" Aluminum?

Just looking for some feedback/advice here...
The hinge and display casing on my 15" TiBook broke yesterday. It'll cost about $250 to repair - possibly more if the display casing is damaged as well as the hinge.
At this point I'm hesitant to put too much $$ into the TiBook, as I imagine I'll be getting a new PB in the next 1-2 years. However, I have invested a considerable amount in the TiBook (7200 60G internal drive, BookEndz docking station, extra RAM, Belkin USB 2.0 card) and am still somewhat reluctant to buy a new machine.
I have a few questions that might help me make my decision:
1) How significant would the performance difference be with these two machines?
2) I love the 7200 100G internal drive option on the new PBs. However, I've heard mixed reviews of their noise/heat level. What is your experience with this?
3) Does the higher resolution screen make a big difference for you?
4) Does anyone have 2G of RAM, and has that made a performance difference?
5) Any ideas for how to make use of an old TiBook?
Thanks for your advice.

I don't think I would repair the TiBook.
For starters, you can still use the TiBook - hook up a monitor, keyboard, and mouse and you have yourself a decent second system for web surfing, email, etc. - or for storing backup files.
Or, you can yank out the hard drive and put it into an enclosure at some point and use it with your new PowerBook. You should still be able to use the Belkin card with your new PB.
The performance difference would be substantial, I believe. I had a first gen aluminum, and I can tell you that my NEW Al is noticeably faster. Get it with the 7200 RPM drive for sure (well, you're already hip to that).
The screen res. of my new Al does make a big difference to me. Every pixel counts. I'm not experiencing any noise or heat issues whatsoever. Built-in bluetooth is awesome - I didn't think I'd use it, but I realized my cell phone has bluetooth so it's really easy to synch my address book with it. And an Apple Bluetooth wireless mouse is sheer mobile computing goodness. Airport extreme is sweet, too, as is USB 2.0 and FW connections. I had a TiBook at one point as well, and to me the Al just feels more professional.
I only have one gig of RAM, but it's doing just fine with it. I'm debating adding another stick, but then again I should put the money into applecare.
I have yet to shut down or restart my Al since getting it. Great battery life. I just sleep it in between uses. Oh, that's the other thing - getting a new PB will also get you a new battery.
Hope this helps.

Apple does not fix iDevices. Instead, they exchange yours for a refurbished or new replacement depending upon the age of your device and refurbished inventories. On rare occasions when there are no longer refurbished units for your older model, they may replace it with the next newer model.
ATTN: Beginning July 2013 Apple Stores are now equipped to do screen repairs/replacements in-house on iPhone 5 and 5C. In some cases while you wait. According to Apple this is the beginning of equipping Apple Stores with the resources needed to do most repairs for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches that would not require major replacements. Later in the year the services may be extended as Apple Stores become equipped and staffed with the proper repair expertise. So, if you need a screen repaired or a broken screen replaced or have your stuck Home button fixed, call your local Apple Store to see if they are now doing these in-house.

  • HT1338 my mac pro has 4 years already and the battery lasts for 10 minutes top. why should i do? get a new battery or what?

please help me what should i do

Assuming you mean a Macbook Pro laptop and not the Mac Pro tower, then batteries wear out.  4 years is a long time for a battery to be in constant use.  In general I've ended up replacing my laptop batteries about once ever 2 years, and at that time I'm often down to 30 to 45 minutes of battery life.
So if you are not ready to get a new Mac, by all means get a new battery.

  • Should I upgrade or get a new MacBook Pro?

Here are the specs for my macbook pro I have now:
    Model Name:    MacBook Pro 17"
      Model Identifier:    MacBookPro2,1
Processor Name:    Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:    2.33 GHz
      Number Of Processors:    1
      Total Number Of Cores:    2
L2 Cache (per processor):    4 MB
      Memory:    2 GB
      Bus Speed:    667 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:    MBP21.00A5.B08
      SMC Version:    1.14f5
    MacBook OS X  Version 10.4.11
We got it in February of 2007 and I'm just not sure what we should do.  Does anyone have a ballpark idea of what it may cost me to upgrade if I bring it into an Apple store?  is it worth it?  It still runs well, it's just getting annoying that the newer apps (and iTunes) won't work with this version. Luckily also have a Windows vista desktop that I can plug my iPad and iPhone into.  Is my MacBook Pro capable of an upgrade? Frankly I only half understand some of the info above.
Thanks in advance for the help/suggestions.

Yes, you have a dam fine machine still.
In your case, I would have a local Mac/PC computer support type backup your files and install Snow Leopard 10.6   $29
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A
I do not advise 10.7 for your machine, it's just a tad outdated for it. As I've have so learned myself on a similar machine.
1: You can choose to add more RAM to 4GB, $20+ plus installation.
2: You can choose to add a 7,200 RPM hard drive, that will increase the machines performance bit more, $100+ plus installation.
However either isn't necessary for 10.6 Snow Leopard and Apple won't do it, or if they do it's going to be a huge charge.
So you would have to do it yourself or hire a Mac geek locally. I advise the local Mac geek if your not familiar with computers.
With 10.6 your going to see a remarkable speed improvement over 10.4 and for $29 is the cheapest performance upgrade you can do.
Unfortunatly your going to have to get new versions of software, but you don't have to buy Office.
    https://www.libreoffice.org/
So a ballpark figure, anywhere from $29 if you self-install Snow Leopard, to $180 or so plus whatever the computer guy charges.
If you find a Mac person who's good with computers you can likely get something he needs, like more memory or another hard drive.
FYI: I was quoted $600 by a Apple Authorized Reseller to replace my hard drive and $435 by Apple to upgrade the RAM from 4GB to 8GB
I got a drive myself for $300 (at the time) and more RAM for $80 and installed both myself.
So I'd say your likely looking at about $300-$350 with present drive and RAM prices including labor with a local Mac computer type.

  • Should I wait before getting a new MBP?

Hello, I am excited to purchase my very first Mac Laptop. I've been looking at the new Haswell MBP 15" retina. I've read over the forums and it sounds like some issues such as overheating, optimization of mavericks, and gpu switching in the upper end model are still problems with the new systems. I would probably use bootcamp and do some gaming. I've heard some of these issues may be due to hardware. I wanted to get people's opinion on how widespread these problems are and if I should wait until there is some resolution. I would probably purchase it sometime in December if I do get one.

Reading about MBP problems on these forums is not necessarily a good index as to whether a certain MBP model is faulty or not.  People with problems or complaints post here.  People with MBPs without issues do not.

  • HT1349 the little things where the charger goes is broken. can i return and get a new ipod touch

    i need help

Probably not. It would come under accidental damage which isn't covered by a warranty. YOu can take it into an Apple store and have them have a look at it, but all you may get is the ability to purchase a replacement.

  • With iOS4 on a 2G will I get the new dock?

I have a 2G and I saw in the demos for iOS 4 that the dock for the bottom four apps are different. Will I get the new dock when I update, I know I will not get all the new features.

You should be able to get the new dock.
    Apple stated the following:
Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking, custom wallpaper, and Bluetooth keyboard support are available only with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and the third-generation iPod touch (32GB and 64GB models from late 2009).

I recently had my cracked iPhone 4 screen fixed, the lady who did it told me my light sensor was broken.. How can I get a new one installed?? i noticed there was something wrong when I talk on the phone it will mute, hold or speaker the calls. It's very annoying how can I fix the light sensor

Was your cracked screen fixed by an Authorized Apple Service Provider?  I may be wrong, but I didn't think they fixed such things.
Regardless of who fixed it, and whether it was an authorized repair or not, I recommend bringing it back to the agency that fixed it in the first place.  But note if the repairing agency is not authorized by Apple, you may not want to spend much more money on repairs there for this unit.

  • My Microphoto is broken, and I won't get my money ba

I bought my Microphoto at an shop, where it costed me 200 euros.
They tested it, did not repair it, and they gave me a letter what says I can come and get a piece of paper worth 50 euros.
That's horrible. If you can't give me back my mp3player fixed, give me a new one instead, if you can't do that, give me my money back. :-/
    What can I do?

    Hi Dale.
I have been told that Creative does not repair stuff, Creative checks if you broke it, and if you didn't broke it, but it got broken by bad quality, you get your money back. I believe it's called fund in English? (A paper, that says you can spend for ... euros on that shop)
I am not happy with this, It costed me 200 euro's, and I should get mine back repaired, or a new one, or my money back.
50 euro is NOT a good deal.
The cheapest you can get a Microphoto nowadays = 80 in Holland. And in that shop, you don't get it anymore. Also, 80 euros is not good either, if you ask me.
Also, may I add that the CustomerService of that shop, (Mediamarkt) made me buy some cheap earphones, so that Creative got some earphones to check out if my mp3player was broken?
Sorry for my Charcoal-Englisch by the way.Message Edited by kwadi on 04-0-20070:37 AM

You could try calling Apple and ask for Customer Relations.
    From Readers Digest-February, 2005
    How to Complain
You call customer service to complain about a product, and you hang up angrier than when you started. That’s customer rage, a feeling experienced by millions of people with a major complaint, says Scott Broetzmann, president an American firm that tells companies how to offer the best customer service. His secrets to getting good service:
    Have a goal
If you want your product repaired, say so. Want an apology? Speak up.
    Keep it short
Focus on one problem, and be succinct.
    Stick with it
You have to invest the time it takes. Don’t get what you want? Ask for a supervisor.
    Skip ultimatums
Don’t threaten not to do business with them again. Why should they help you if you won’t buy from them in the future?
    Plead your case
Many companies have information such as how much money you’ve spent with them and how often you complain. If you’re a good customer, they may be more willing to help.
    Be nice
You’re unlikely to get what you want if you’re rude.
    Good luck.
