PB wakes up to grey screen

Recently my MacBookPro3,1 has started waking up occasionally to grey screen. Very had to get it to respond even using the power button. I have the latest system software on an 800GB partition on my western digital 1TB internal drive and 4GB ram. Always plugged into 120 V as power.
I found the following in the diagnostic messages log (found in system profiler /software /logs)
Location: /var/log/DiagnosticMessages

Any idea of a preventive measure to insure proper awakening?

Do you mean you get a normal startup chord, or an actual beep when starting? A beep would be an error tone indicating no RAM detected. This could be from having one RAM DIMM in a slot that has gone bad, for example.

  • Imac G5 will not boot, Grey screen. Please help!

Please forgive me if this posting is a bit lengthy!
My Mac had been on sleep mode for 2 days, when I tried to wake it up a message popped up stating that a system failure had occurred (Darwin Kernal version 7.7.2: etc). I shut it down and tried to restart only to get a grey screen and with the spinning gearlike timer and after about a minute the fan started to run at full power upon which I turned it off via the power button on the rear. I tried several times to re-boot but the same thing happened each time.
I have tried to start up using the ‘safe-boot’ mode (held down shift after chime and released upon seeing Apple logo and spinning gear timer). After a few seconds however, the screen goes blank and the start-up chime repeats only to be followed once again by the grey screen, spinning gear and fan running at full speed. No progress
The Apple website suggests using the ‘Software Install or Restore’ disc which came with the computer. However, I don’t have this disc, only ‘Apple hardware test’ and ‘Mac OSX Install’ (3 discs) came in the box.
I checked the system using the ‘Apple Hardware Test’ CD (by holding down the C-key during start-up) using both the quick and advanced check but no problems were reported.
I then ran Disc Utility from the first installation disc to repair permissions on the HD which was successful. However, after re-starting the machine, once again the same grey screen appeared with no apparent progress.
I then tried to check for damage using the ‘fsck’, recommended by Apple if ‘safe boot’ mode cannot be run. After starting up in single-user mode I typed the following prompt: /sbin/fsck –fy. It ran through a quick phrase list but then delivered the line ‘Volume Check Failed’. I faired no better when I repeated the process over again.
I have never updated the software with Apple updates since I bought the machine (don’t laugh), mainly because I don’t have a broadband internet connection at home, could there be a bug in Panther OSX that needed fixing with a later update?
I have no ‘add-ons’ plugged in other than the keyboard and mouse. I don’t think it can be a firmware problem, I am the only user and have not changed any settings relating to access permissions.
This is my first Mac and so my experience of problem solving is quite limited. I am not a Mac expert and to be honest am confused by much of the jargon. The computer is now two years old and therefore out of warranty so I don’t want to take it to my local Mac shop if I can solve the problem myself.
I’m a bit concerned as there are many documents that I have not backed-up (foolish I know).
I don’t know how I can attempt to rectify anything if the machine will not even boot-up in safe mode!?!
Could the problem be something to do with the PRAM settings, might the internal battery be dead bearing in mind that the machine is now 2 years old?
Would it be possible to re-install Panther from the original discs, I have read that this will not loose any files but can somebody confirm this?
Can anybody offer some advice as to what I might try to get the Mac to start-up and avoid any problems in the future? Any advice will be much appreciated.
    Imac G5   Mac OS X (10.3)   80Gb HD / 768Mb RAM

Please accept my apologies regarding the time it has taken for me to get back to you. Since we last spoke I have been away on vacation.
Upon my return I attempted to follow your advice but it would seem that my problems are more significant than I had originally anticipated.
First, as you recommended I reset the PRAM by holding down the required keys from start-up, until the machine re-started.
I then attempted to perform the ‘Archive and Install’ process for OS10.3 (Panther) from the original software discs, making sure to select ‘Preserve User Settings and Preferences’.
My Mac first went through a ‘Checking your Installation Disc’ phase (10 mins) before starting the next phase ‘Checking Target Volume Consistency’. However, after only a few seconds it stopped with the pop-up message ‘There were errors installing the software’. I repeated the process but got the same message.
I decided to run Disc Utility once again from Disc 1, upon which I realised that I had previously only run Verify & Repair Disc Permissions, not Verify Disc or Repair Disc.
I decided to try to Verify Disc under First Aid, however, this was where the trouble started. I got the following message on screen:
"The Volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
    Volume Check Failed
Error: The Underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)
    1 Volume checked
    HFS Volumes verified
    1 Volume failed verification."
Obviously I am assuming this problem is preventing me from performing an ‘Archive and Install’. Now I’m a bit concerned that my problem could be very serious, bearing in mind that so many of my files are not backed up.
I’d be very grateful for more wise advice as to what to try next.

  • Intel iMac with 10.5.8 - Grey Screen of Death but worse please help!

Okay, this has happened three times now in six months, and I'm about to go out of my mind. Everytime it's a little different but basically:
My iMac becomes unresponsive, whether by a system lock up, or I wake up in the morning (like this morning) to a black screen with the white light still on, as if it were asleep. Nothing I do wakes the computer or otherwise makes it respond, so I hold the power button down for a few seconds and it shuts off.
Now, when I boot up, I get a grey screen with the Apple logo with the spinning black/grey pinwheel.
Inserting a CD does nothing. In fact, now my only install CD of Leopard is stuck in the slot-loading drive. I've tried everything I can to eject it: hold down eject on boot, left mouse button on boot, option on boot, commandoption+pr, command+v, etc. etc. etc.
I'm a software developer for OS X and have extensive hardware knowledge, so I kind of know a bit about what I'm doing.
The iMac will not boot off of a CD. It doesn't even recognize the CD. I have an external USB 2.0 hard drive with a current Time Machine backup, but I don't think those are bootable.
Anyway, in the past, to resolve this issue, I've had to take the iMac apart, put the internal hard drive into an external enclosure, and mount the drive onto my MacBook Pro. Interestingly enough, when I do this the drive mounts perfectly fine and shows all files exactly as they should be. So it's something to do with Leopard destroying it's boot record, or some other system configuration.
Even worse, I cannot simply reinstall Mac OS X from the laptop, because the installer says the hard drive needs to be formatted before an install can occur. So either way I'm losing all my data (even though as I said I have a current backup).
Well this time I haven't taken it apart yet. But the install CD is stuck in the drive. Even if I got the hard drive out, and mounted on my MacBook, my other install CD is too damaged to use, so I MUST get this CD out of the iMac.
    My questions are:
What do you do when the grey screen of death occurs, and the computer won't even boot off of the CD?
What do you do to get a CD stuck in an iMac out? Especially when the iMac is in the grey screen of death mode?
What in the world is causing this to happen EVERY 3-6 MONTHS??!
Someone please help... I'm going insane.

Hi I am having the identical problem with my 24" intel iMac 2007..... Did you ever figure out what the problem was? I'm on round 3 now and with a completely blank grey screen and it won't start up from the disk 1.. I also have diskwarrior and techtool pro as well as the osx leopard and snow leopard disk... The HD is new.. Replaced by apple 3 months ago.. Don't know the cause the first time this happened about 9 months ago.. 2nd time, 6 months ago it never rebooted from the office for mac 2008 critical update... Did a clean install after backing up to TC... Took it to apple replaced HD even though it appeared ok, they checked all hardware and I ran techtool pro daily ever since. Last week software update had several updates avail. Office for mac being one of them.. I updated and have never booted since.. . I swear to never ever use another Microsoft product as long as I live if I can just fix this once more... Help me please

  • Powerbook G4 won't go past grey screen

I have a 12" 867 mHz Powerbook G4. The drive started making awful grinding noises so I assumed it was a bad drive (it's the original drive, rather old) so I purchased a new Samsung 160 GB drive on eBay. Disassembling was tricky, but I got the new drive in only to find that the computer didn't recognize it once I got it all back together. Disassembled it again, reinstalled the old drive to make sure I didn't screw up the connector ribbon. The old drive still spun, making the awful noise again. Disassembled, new drive, reassembled. Now nothing. Just a grey screen that lasts forever, even goes to sleep and wakes back up grey. I've tried all the various keyboard tricks (resetting PRAM, PRU, going "verbose") but to no avail. One other thing worth mentioning: the battery was pretty much kaput to begin with and to make matters worse, I dropped it during the assembly before the grey screen problem started. It got a little crack in the outer plastic housing, but looks fine otherwise. I mention this because I read something on one of these threads that this model does not have a separate PRAM battery but instead uses the main battery. HELP ME!

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
After you installed the new drive, did you boot from an OS X CD, and use Disk Utility, off the menu bar, to set up the disk? You need to establish a mac os extended (journaled) partition, on the hard drive before you can use it.

  • I have a grey screen on start up and can see the sign in page in the background. How do I resolve this issue.

After my iMac has been asleep for sometime and I wake it up there is a grey screen with a load bar running at the bottom, but I can see the sign in page in the background. It eventually goes to the sign in page but it still takes a minute or so before I can actually sign in as well the mouse and keyboard are froze during that time as well.  One it unfreezes the iMac seems to work as usual.  What is going on and how do I resolve?

    Hello there Kenorb1,
It sounds like your computer is unresponsive and the screen is grayed out with a loading bar and is unresponsive for a bit. From what you describe it sounds like you are seeing the computer wake from Safe Sleep. Here is some more information about what that is and why it is happening:
Mac computers: Progress bar appears after waking from sleep
Safe Sleep ensures that data stored in main memory will not be lost should the computer shut down due to the battery being drained completely . Prior to your computer entering sleep, Safe Sleep automatically saves the contents of main memory—such as desktop settings, open applications, and other work in progress—to the hard drive.
There are two situations in which a computer will enter safe sleep:
In the event the battery becomes completely depleted while the computer is asleep, the computer will shut down. But when a power adapter is connected or a freshly charged battery is installed, the computer can be restarted. Press the power button as if turning the computer on and it will automatically return to the desktop state that existed prior to entering sleep. This means that applications and files will remain exactly as they were prior to the computer being put to sleep, making it easy for you to continue with your work.
With the release of the OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.2 supplemental update 2.0, a new feature was introduced to enter safe sleep after four hours of the computer being connected to AC power. This is an effort to comply with the European Energy Standards (ErP Lot6). This will only occur if there is no wireless or Ethernet activity and no activity from external devices such as USB storage devices.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • 17" Intel iMac Kernel Panic, Freezing at Grey Screen and Beeping!

    Hi there,
I have a new 17" Intel iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, 250 GB, 1GB Memory with OS X 10.4.8) that keeps getting those "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." messages.
It all started on Sunday when I tried to wake the computer (the computer went on Sleep by itself) and got that message so I restarted the computer but it froze on the grey screen (even before I got the Apple) and it beeped 3 times and then the light on front just kept blinking 3 times. I finally was able to erase and re-install OS X and everything was fine until I left the computer for a while, it went to sleep again, and then the message came back. I restarted and it seems to be fine but I'm worried the beeping and freezing will come back.
The first time this happened, I didn't know enough to "log" the kernel panics but I do know that I deleted a lot of the applications (iWeb, Garage Band, etc.) that I didn't need and fidged with the Share folder in the Users folder. I use a Flash Drive a lot and always left it connected to the keyboard's USB drive. Also leave my iPod Nano connected. After I reinstalled everything, I only deleted the Garage Band demos, installed and deleted the Firefox 2.0 and Opera (wanted to just stick with Firefox 1.0) applications. Only used the Flash Drive a little and haven't connected my iPod on yet. Trying to isolate the problem. I can't remember doing anything else.
Here's the log from the latest kernel panic:

I don't know what this part is about because I don't have a Printer hooked up to the computer.
The only other thing I can think of is I also installed WireTap and StuffIt before the initial crashing. I heard StuffIt was causing problems on some Intel Macs. Also changed a lot of the icons and changed the icon for Preview. I "verified" my hard drive and "verified and repaired the disk permissions" (I'm not that knowledgeable about computers let alone Macs). I also checked my hardware by pressing D while the grey CD OS X was running and get this:
    4MEME/4/40000000: 2F244040
usually during the initial testing but when I restart and try it again, it's fine.
Well, that's all I can think of. Any thoughts?
    Thanks a lot!

Thanks for the reply and links!
After the first problems, I re-seated the RAMs. Does this mean I have to buy new memory? This is a pretty new iMac, bought it in May and have only been using it for maybe two months. Haven't done a whole lot with it but I usually keep a lot of programs open at the same time. I have Adobe CS3 installed too and it says it needs at least 1 GB of memory. I've heard people saying it's best to have as much RAM (this Mac can only take up to 3GB) when using those programs. Maybe it's getting too heavy? Should I only keep one program open at a time? Also, which part of my post indicated that it was memory problems? What the "panic.log" stated or that "4MEME/4/40000000: 2F244040" stuff? Anything else I can do to not let this happen again?
    Thanks again!

  • Start-up grey screen lock and waking issues

Hello, I've been having several problems with my iMac G5 that seemed to all start at the same time just in this last week:
1/ Trouble starting computer - during start up the usual tone is heard, then a grey screen appears and the start up process stops. I am forced to restart and try again. After several attempts the computer makes it to the grey apple logo and it finally starts up. The computer works perfectly once it is finally on all of the way - except for the following sleep thing . . .
2/ computer won't start up again after sleeping - EITHER screen remains black and fan noise is heard, OR screen image comes back but then distorts slightly, a dark gray washes over it, and a restart notice appears (also distorted).
I have tried the follwing techniques to fix the problems:
    - Disc Utility check: everything fine
    - Hardware Test from disk: everything fine
    - Re-set PRAM
    - Tried starting holding down Option Key - had to shut down after endless wait
    - Looked for new firmware - what I found didn't help
    - Removed new Software - no change
    - Tested with various peripherals disconnected - no dice
I have NOT tried Safe Boot - safe mode would turn off many of the functions I use most.
I'm not sure what else I can do. I am, of course, aware of the "Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues" but as I live in Japan, outside Tokyo, it is going to be a long haul to get my computer in to be looked at.
Could this be fixed any other way by me? Or does this sound like a classic "G5 power/video issue" and I should just bite it and take it in?
Many thanks for your time in replying,

Hi Corrie, welcome to Discussions. Unfortunately I think you hit the nail right on the head. I would find a way to get this done with extension program because paying to fix it maybe cost inhibitive. (could you ship it to a friend or relative in the USA and have them take it in)???
For the sleep/wake issue you can try resetting the SMU, read the link below and it will show you how. Good luck Bob

  • Basics, On/Off, Quiting Ap and Grey Screen

Just got my iPad, and even though reading the User's Manual, having a hard time with the simplest things:
    1. How do you turn it off?
    2. How do you quit an application? Safari seems stuck, kind of problem I would normally deal with first by restarting ap. Safari seems stuck with a grey screen. I can see through it but no response anywhere on screen, nor do buttons at top other than forward and back work. Can only rotate among 3 greyed out screens. And can't find this addressed in trouble shooting.
    Help please. TX.
    Armando

1, two options : one is to put into sleep mode (which is all I normally do) by pressing the button on the top right (the sleep/wake button); press it, or the home key on the front, to wake it up. The other option is to press and hold the sleep/wake button until the red slider appears on the screen (takes a couple of seconds), then slide that across; this powers the iPad off ; press and hold the button to turnit back on (I've only done this when I know that won't be using it for a few days).
2, double-tap the home button (below the iPad screen) to bring up the task bar at the bottom of the screen. You will either need to open another app first, or be on the home screen, to be able to close Safari i.e. to close an app it can't be the one 'open' on the screen. Then press and hold any of the icons on the bar until they start to shake; press the minus symbol on any that you want to close; press the home button (or touch any part of the screen above the taskbar) to stop the shaking. (The taskbar also shows recently used apps, they are not necessarily active.) You can also reset (reboot) the iPad by pressing and holding both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
Page 36 of the iPad2 4.3 manual (http://support.apple.com/manuals/ipad) has a little bit of info about multitasking and removing apps from the taskbar

  • My Yahoo app has a grey screen overlay

Every now and then, my Yahoo mobile app on my iPhone 4S has a grey transparent overlay over my Inbox items. If I tap the menu item, the Inbox pane slides to the right and reveals a black screen with vague white outlines of the folder icons that I can't identify. Anyone else having this problem? I can't figure out how to stop it from happening, or how to go back to white, other than logging out and logging back in again.
I'm afraid of this happening to my other apps. Thanks for any thoughts.

Close all open apps by double-tapping the home button, then swiping up and off the screen with the app window (not the smaller icon).
Reset your device: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)

  • Grey Screen Problem!!

Hi there, I've now spent 2 days researching the whole internet and apple support site to find something that suites my problem, ...
I've tried a lot things they said that it might help, but nothing helped so far...
    Here what happened:
I have an iMac 27" (an iMac 11,1) with Quad-Core i5 2,66 GHz, 8GB RAM and 1TB HD, I have Mac OS X Lion installed and updated everything ...
The night before I simply turned off my iMac, next day I wake up wanted to turn on my iMac and everything I can see is
the grey starting screen with the spinning gear, spinning for a while and then it freezed, ... nothing more, tried it a few times,
but it always ends up with a grey screen and a freezed spinning wheel, ...
I've already tried the safe mode, boot from cd, and check everything, the HD seems to be ok, ...
Is there anything else I can do to continue start my iMac normally and get back my data??
Or is there a way I can access my HD to rescue my data from HD and at least reinstall OS X to get it work again normally??
Hope that there is anyone out there who can help me, I'm getting totally frustrated with that

    Well, progress of a sort!
When Disk Utility produces that 'error on exit' report, it typically means that the problem with the drive is sufficiently serious that it cannot resolve it. It means that the drive is sufficiently damaged (in terms of data integrity) that the often-used reinstall of MacOS using an archive and install won't work. The drive doesn't show up as available because MacOS can't write to it in that condition.
As such there are really only two viable alternatives. One is to obtain a better drive utility package and attempt to repair the drive with that, and the other is to use 'erase and install' to reformat the drive and install it again from scratch. Clearly, the latter would mean your data is lost, and thus if you haven't got a backup of data you need to keep, should be a last resort!
Utilities that might help are Disk Warrior (http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html) or Tech Tools Pro (http://www.micromat.com/) Both utilities are commercial products and cost around $100, and neither have a trial download. Nor are either guaranteed to work.
You might instead consider a utility to rescue your files (for which you'll need an external hard drive to rescue them to) so that you can then erase and install the internal drive. A good file recovery utility is Data Rescue II (http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php) which is also $99, but for which there is at least a trial version to see if it can find your files before committing to purchasing a copy that will rescue them.

  • Grey Screen Ruins My Day

I've been scanning other posts and nothing seems to be quite like the issue I am having.
I use a macbook pro with snow leopard. I bought it in August 2009.
The sequense leading up to the problem: yesterday I used my Sims 3 disk for the first time in months. I had forgotten how SLOW it makes my laptop, but I enjoyed some gaming before Saving and Closing.
I did not remove the disk before closing my laptop. I did not turn off my laptop (as the battery was fully charged)
This morning, I opened my laptop and things worked fine. No "disk noises". Laptop wasn't warm. It took the normal amount of time to wake up. I went online to a few sites. I was in the middle of watching a video on youtube when it froze. I figured it was the internet connection so I turned off my Airport and turned it back on (my usual fix for wonky internet). No luck. When Safari was active I got the spinning rainbow ball. I tried to force quit Safari. No luck. So I held down the power button until the computer forced a shutdown. I walked away and waited a few mintues.
I pushed the power button . . . it did not Chime, but it did buzz and hum as normal. But the grey screen is as far as it gets. I have tried the off & on process about 6 times now, and it's the same thing each time. Short pushes, long pushes. Same thing. HELP HELP HELP!
Notes--I do not hear the disk spinning. I have tried holding down the eject button. I have tried holding down the power button while clicking the trackpad. I have tried pressing Option to see if anything shows up. I did back up my harddrive with in the past 6 months. I did remove a lot of photos and videos after the transferm so I know my HD is not full. (I am a photographer/videographer and I work with a LOT of media)
I have banged my head on the screen---scratch that last one. Anyway nothing is working.
(not sure about the OS X because my COMPUTER WON'T TURN ON)

For a moment I saw the Start Up Apple and the circling white wheel of Boot Up. (Screen remained grey) But then, before I could even get excited the Apple turned into a circle with a bar through it. (not sure what that's called)
But it stopped loading and froze. That was the only result I got--and I can't get my computer to do it again.
Does anyone else have a suggestion??

  • On start up - grey screen of death, and beeping noise

    Hi,
I'm worried my computer got fried somehow.
I was was plugged into power, ethernet, mini-div (conneced to second monitor) and a usb mouse. I closed the lid and unplugged the cords (which order I don't remember). 2 hours later I went to take the laptop out of its bag and it was EXREMELY hot, and the fan was running loudly. It would not wake up. I did a hard re-boot using the power button. Upon restarting the usual 'boom' is heard and then I see the grey screen (no cursor) and then it just continues to beep and I get nothing.
    Please help!

Don't be afraid to run the Apple Hardware Test, AHT, from your original disks.
Might try resetting your System Management Controller, SMC, also.

  • Re: Weird grey screen after 10.5.2 update?

Left my computer on this morning (did not put it into sleep mode) and came back tonight to see this weird grey screen. Could not get it to "wake up." Eventually shut it down manually and re-started. Seemed to boot up normally, but I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this on their computers after the update?
BTW, I understand that repairing permissions is done best off the install DVD, but I recall there were some issues with permissions on the install DVD? Is that true?

Can't help with the gray screen problem, but WRT permissions repair, you understand wrongly. Leopard and Tiger use the permissions information from the volume it's repairing, so it doesn't matter where you doing it from.

  • After wakeup grey screen, runs slow

since new softwareupdate (OS X 10.9 (13A603)- when computer wakes up I'm presented with grey screen with progress bars at bottom.  takes a while, then comes up with regular screen, but takes another minute or so to have access to mouse.  reading through forums on internet seems this is a common issue.  suggested changing startup items in terminal, but I'm reluctant to do so as I'm not that savvy and afraid to really screwing things up.
additionally, computer running really really s l o w.  have done several clean ups with clean my mac, including deep cleaning, but proble
any suggestions?  fix for software glitch?
really annoying.  top of the line macbook pro shouldnt be running this way

Did you purchase AppleCare for your top of the line MBP?  If so, call them.  Let them deal w/the problem.  It's what you are paying them for.

When I turn on my computer it goes strait to a grey screen with the apple and starts a low beeping. The beeping does not stop so I rebooted it several times and everytime it turns back on, it starts to beep again.
    What could be the problem?

Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Note: It is possible that the SMC could encounter an issue that may cause  unusual system behavior typically related to the symptoms described  below.  In some cases, resetting the SMC may be the only correct method  to resolve the issue, however, an SMC reset should only be attempted  after all other standard troubleshooting has been performed.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC.  Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep.  Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
If your Mac appears to be running normally but isn't responding, force the computer to shut down by pressing and holding the power button for 10 seconds. Note: You will lose any unsaved work in any open applications.
For Mac portables experiencing issues related to the MagSafe power adapter and/or battery, try:
Unplug the MagSafe power adapter from the Mac and the wall power socket for several seconds.
Shutdown the Mac.  Physically remove and re-insert the battery (if it's removable) and startup the Mac.
If the issue is still not resolved after following the troubleshooting items above, an SMC reset may be necessary.
After performing normal troubleshooting, these symptoms may indicate that an SMC reset may be necessary:

The computer's fans run at high speed although the computer is not experiencing heavy usage and is properly ventilated.
    Lights
The keyboard backlight appears to behave incorrectly (on Mac computers that have this feature).
The Status Indicator Light (SIL) appears to behave incorrectly (on Mac computers that have an SIL).
Battery indicator lights, if present, appear to behave incorrectly (on portables that use non-removable batteries).
The display backlight doesn't respond correctly to ambient light changes on Mac computers that have this feature.
    Power
