PB will not  sleep when inactive

The display will sleep, but not the whole book.
Furthermore the hard disk will not sleep (of course I checked the option).
BTW, the hard disk is always running, even with all applications terminated.
I have no problem sending it to sleep manually, nor on wake-up.

I am having the same problem with my 15" PB, and though it used to sleep, since about December it no longer sleeps on its own, unless I close the cover. The same things happens with the hard drive -- it spins down, and then it starts back up a couple of minutes later, despite the fact that I'm not using the computer.
Any ideas?

  • Macbook Pro 13" will not sleep when I shut the lid

    Hello Community,
This is my first time using the forum. I have a macbook pro 13" 2009 model. Recently I had my MBP connected to an external monitor. I shut the lid while it was connected to the monitor and forgot to turn off my bluetooth mouse. Later that night the mouse was bumped, waking my macbook and setting it to clamshell mode. I put it to sleep again, opened the lid and woke it, but the LCD on the laptop did not turn on. I reset the PRAM and the NVRAM with no luck. I disconnected the monitor, rested the P/NVRAM and it would boot with the laptop screen and once everything was loaded my screen went black and then went to sleep on its own. I tried powering on and off using the P/NVRAM key commands...and nothing. So I opened the bottom case and physically disconnect the battery, reconnected the battery, put the bottom plate back on and powered it up. The screen began working again, now I have a new problem, the MBP WILL NOT sleep when I shut the lid anymore. I even reinstalled the OS and still no luck? If anyone has anything helpful that I could try to get this feature working again it would be much appreciated. If there is some terminal command I could try or some other troubleshooting method. I even put a magnet by the right side of the keyboard to try to trigger the sleep switch.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

I resolved my issue in a very unlikely way. In my earlier post I mentioned that I wiped my hard drive and was starting from scratch. Well I reinstalled windows 7 through bootcamp and it fixed my sleep issue. That's right folks...Windows fixed my mac. I think that it was an EFI issue. I think this because windows 7 uses EFI and during installation it must have reset the sleep values to normal. I feel when you reinstall Mac OSX the EFI partition on the drive should get wiped and reinstalled as well. I also feel that apple should have an option within System Prefs for the user to select what the way is that the computer responds when the lid is shut instead of the ritual of trickery and problems that the clamshell mode can cause.
    Hope this helps someone.

  • MacBook Pro will not sleep when charging and display is closed.

    Hi,
My Mac will not sleep when it is charging. When I close my display, it will not sleep.
When I unplug the power cable, it sleeps...
I've tried to reset the SMC, and I think i did, the charger went from green to red etc different colours..
Does anybody know what this might be?
    thanks

    AIGHT GUYS!
This is how to fix it, and i guarantee u its 90% the cause.!
first of all, if you are a lion user (most likely all of you with this problem) go to system preferences, and then to sharing. turn all sharing OFF. especially printers....
open a terminal, and type in :
    pmset -g assertions
This will show u if somehting is preventing ur mac from sleeping. on the left colomn, it should say "PreventSystemSleep" and on the right colomn a number. mine was one, which is probably the same for you guys.
Go to system preferences > Print & Scan > Open Print Queue. Make sure all the printing queues are empty and nothing is in there. You do not need to pause any or anything like that just make sure nothing is in the queue.
Close your macbook lid and look at ur light it should be sleeping. HOPE THIS WORKS FOR U
took me long enough to find out.

  • IBook will not sleep when lid closed

    Hi,
I recently had my Hard Drive replaced, the old one died. It was all covered by AppleCare and the repairs done at a Apple Authorised Outlet. After installing everything again I just found out that my iBook will not sleep when the lid is closed. The screen is still on and bright. Any ideas why? Is this dangerous? Any quick fixes?
    Cheers,
    Jack

    Jack,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You need to give the Apple Authorized Repair center a call back and let them know what's going on. I've seen this before here on the forums, and it was attributed to a sleep magnet not being put back in. It's most likely this. Apparently, putting this magnet back in can be easily overlooked.

  • My iMac will not sleep when not in use.

The screen will go dark, but the disk will not sleep when not being used.  I have restored defaults and set energy settings to do so and still no luck.  Any thoughts?  Was this part of a current update?  It just started to not sleep a few weeks ago.

Thanks for your help regarding my computers sleep disorder.  I wanted you to know that after many hours of searching, I found that I had downloaded a program called Growl with my Belkin router when I installed it.  I removed this Growl program and finally my computer will sleep on it's own.  I wanted to give you this info just in case you come across this problem again.
    Thanks again!

  • Photosmart C8180 Touch display will not sleep when networked using Devolo Homeplug

The printer operates perfectly when networked via Devolo Homeplug system except that the touch screen will not enter sleep mode after 30 minutes of inactivity.
However, if the Devolo system is unplugged then the touch screen will enter sleep mode correctly.
    Can anyone help.

I'm seeing similar behavior when I disconnect my TBD. My Retina MBP doesn't go to sleep. I get to work an hour later and it is very hot to the touch.
I'm not seeing lots of people complaining, so I wonder if it's something weird I do. Do you have VMWare Fusion or XQuartz running when you try and sleep?

  • Macbook Pro will not sleep if inactive.  Indicator is solid white.

I've done a bit of troubleshooting without favorable results.  Here's the situation:  The Macbook will not go to sleep from inactivity.  If I close the lid it sleeps just fine, but it won't  if I set the computer to sleep after a period of inactivity.
Take this example.  Display sleep set to 10 min, computer sleep set to 15 min.  At 10 minutes the screen will go black and the indicator will become solid white.  At 15 minutes nothing changes and the computer will stay in this state perpetually.
I've rebooted the computer without opening any apps and this all still occurs.  I've also checked the system with "pmset -g" and everything looks good.  Here is the output from my most recent test.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    pmset -g assertions
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).

  • Screen replaced on 17in--now PB will not sleep when lid is closed

I recently replaced my screen to a glossier LG Philips lp171w02 screen. My problems are that my pb will not go to sleep when I close the lid and the brightness keys also are not functioning. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is there a way to non-destructively remove this magnet from my 17" PowerBook (older one with 1440x900 display)? I don't like that my PowerBook sleeps when I close it, and I've asked Apple if there is a way to disable this functionality. Short of plugging in an external display, they told me no.
This option is built in to the Windows OS, and I've grown quite accustomed to putting my laptops to sleep manually. I'd really like to be able to have the lid closed and still let programs run, downloads continue, etc.

  • Macbook air's fan not turning off and it will not sleep when the lid is closed?

I downloaded OS X Mavericks yesterday. The fan will not turn off. It runs whenever i turn on the computer. The computer does  not turn off when i close the lid, and the fan still runs. There is also no battery icon anymore on my home screen. Is this just a bug with Mavericks? My computer is a mid 2012 edition.

  • MacBook will not sleep when lid is closed

I just noticed in the last few weeks that whenever I close my MacBook it will not go to sleep. I've had it only a year and protect it like a baby so I'm not sure what happened (maybe a recent update is buggy).
I've done some research and it seems that there are some problems with MacBook Pros but not so much with MacBooks.
Is there anyone out there that is having the same problem or has had the same problem and has fixed it?
I've tried reseting the SMC and PRAM and repairing the permissions...any other suggestions? I don't feel like going down to the Apple Store unless my baby is in immediate danger.
    Thanks

Console.app will allow you to check various logs. The root system one should be reflecting any major issues, though be aware the description may not be in plain english.
Another issue I found is that certain classes of USB storage devices can wake the mac back up immediately after it sleeps on lid shut, especially external multicard readers (sd/mmc combo etc). If there is any USB equipment, try unplugging it all first before closing the lid and see if you have a different outcome.

If my wifi is on, my macbook won't sleep when I either close or click sleep. If I close it, the fans would soon get louder.

  • X120e does not sleep when lid closed

I found another similar post, however it was resolved by the individual reinstalling the operating system.
My issue is more complicated. I have made sure everything is up to date, all the settings that tell the system to sleep when the lid is closed are turned on. I have even turned those settings off off, just so I could turn them back on to make sure there wasn't something quirky about it.
I have tried restoring the system to factory settings using the recovery partition, as well as discs burned from the program that came with the computer. I have tried clean install from Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 discs.
The unit still does not sleep. I don't ever remembering it being able to. I once closed the display thinking it would sleep (power was plugged in). Woke up the next day, went to work for 8 hours, came back and felt that the system was really hot. Opened the lid and the screen was exactly as I had left it the day before.
When I first got the system in 2012, the screen did not work, so I actually had to send it to Atlanta, GA for repairs. It came back quickly, and it still did not work, so I actually sent it back to Atlanta, GA's repair center a second time in the same week. It came back working and I left it alone. I never tested the sleep/wake because I always just turned the system off when I was done with it, but now I am back in school and this little computer comes in handy, but I don't want to turn off the system manually going from class to class when I need to pack it away in my bag.
Could there be a hardware issue? Something inside not connected? This laptop works perfectly EXCEPT for the fact that it will not sleep when the lid is closed. It is out of warranty but had I known this was an issue while it was still under warranty, I would have inquired. This unit is in pretty fantastic shape, looks brand new too. No damage, never been dropped, and only ever handled by me (never loaned out).
    How can I fix this?

    Thanks for the reply, gat0gelat0.
Yes, those settings were the first things I checked. I also tried changing it to "Do nothing", then changing back to the sleeping option. It still does nothing when I close the lid.
I would like the functionality of it going to sleep when I close the lid for the convenience, like when class ends, I have to rush to my next class, I just want to close the lid, put it in my bag and run to the next class. Keyboard shortcuts like Fn-F4 work, but this laptop should have the functionality I am describing, and I want to figure out why it isn't working and how to fix it.
I suspect there is an issue with whatever is used hardware wise to sleep the machine. Either it's not being triggered, or it's not there, or it's broken. I've tried running a magnet around the bezel of the LCD screen as well as around the palm rest bezel and there is no activity as I've read that many laptops trigger sleep by interaction by a magnet. Still nothing.

  • Will Not Sleep In Energy Saver Mode

My iMac G5 20" 1.8Ghz will not sleep when I set it to sleep in the energy saver panel. This just started for no specific reason a few months ago. It will sleep fine when selected from the Apple menu. I have been through the discussions and no one seems to have a good fix for this. I have repaired permissions, reset the PRAM and SMU, and tried all the different configurations in energy saver. I called AppleCare and they seemed not to know anything about this issue. They recommened an archive and reinstall of the operating system. I feel this is kind of drastic for this and I have not yet tried it unless I can see that other people have done it and it works. My computer is in the repair program for the power supply problem and it has an updated power supply since the original actually smoked and Apple replaced it. I was wondering if anyone out there has had this same sleep issue and got it resolved?

Well I finally decided to try and delete an application that I suspected could be a problem not allowing my computer to sleep automatically. That application is LAST FM a music service from the UK which is actually quite good. I suspected it was a problem since it would always launch when I opened iTunes and asked if I wanted to share my iTunes library with the LAST FM group which I did not. I selected I did not want to share in the LAST FM preferences but it still opened anyway when I launched iTunes. I deleted the program and repaired disk permissions and *It Worked*, my computer will now go to sleep with the settings I selected in energy saver. I know there are other people out there with this problem I would first look at this application and others that are probably running in the backround causing your computer not to sleep automatically. I am a firm believer in trying to work up from the easiest solution before taking the drastic approach, such as a system reinstall, or a logic board replacement. I did take Nikki's suggestion seriously. My power supply had been replaced in the repair program and my logic board did not meet the criteria for replacement since it was not exibiting the symptoms that required its replacement such as video and power problems.
