PB with Orinoco card won't connect using OS 9

Could someone help me get the following configuration to work.
G3 Wallstreet with Lucent Orinoco silver card running OS 9.2.2 won't connect to internet via an Extreme BS running under OS 10.4/DSL.
Using airport extension 2.0.4 and the airport card sees the BS (strong signal indicated), but cannot connect. When press the connect button, it starts to dial an old modem phone number and fails.
BTW, the BS works perfectly with newer Powerbooks running OS 10.4.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Mini 1.5 GHz/SD/GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Hello Robert,
Does your desktop show your Orinoco card as being
mounted? Mine has an icon sitting on the desktop
(Wavelan IEEE).
Yes, on desktop, with the name "Airport PC Card".
When I double click on it, it brings
up the TCP/IP control panel.
Double clicking icon brings up an options box (?) with CONNECT and TURN AIRPORT OFF buttons. Also shows signal level (mine is high) Airport and BS id numbers. This options box shows AIRPORT in the menu bar at the top. I believe this is what you describe as TCP/IP control panel. However, if I select the TCP/IP control panel I get a box with TCP/IP in the menu bar and it shows setup parameters which seem correct.
Airport in the Apple menu gives me a dialog box
with a CONNECT button. It shows my AEBS name to the
left of the button.
Under Status, mine shows my network name and
"Status not available". I don't get too wrapped
around this as it is currently working.
Mine shows AEBS name and directly below "Not connected to the Internet".
Below that is signal strength bar with strong signal indicated.
Do you have a triangle with "Show settings" beside
it. If you click on the triangle, what does it show.
Mine shows "Airport On" with a button to turn Airport
Off. Under Airport Network, there is a
pulldown next to "Choose network" which shows
"Computer to Computer" and my network name. I have my
network name selected.
Yes, have triangle. When triangle pointing down see:
Airport On and a button to turn Airport Off.
Under Airport Network, in Choose Network is the name of my AEBS. Another choice, not selected, is Create computer to computer network. Third choice is
complicated number sequence that seems to also be a.k.a. name for the BS.
The AppleTalk control panel also shows connect via
"Airport PC Card" and Current Zone shows "no zones
available", but I think it should show
"wireless".
Mine shows "Wavelan IEEE" and "no zones available".
Wonder why mine has different name (Airport PC Card). Tried, but cannot rename the airport card icon on desktop.
I hope that some of this is helpful to you and that
we can get you up and running in a minimum of time.
New info:
On my HD I have a folder titled WaveLAN Install Disk. It contains a number of files which I assume I downloaded off a CD or the internet many months ago when I had an ethernet connection. Some files are installers which I probably already used (no record of the my early install steps). There are a couple of WaveLAN extensions in my extensions folder (WaveLAN CARD and WAVELAN DLPI. There is also 3 Airport extensions (Airport AP, Airport AP support and Airport PC Card). Do you see the same?
Thanks
Robert

  • Airport Express won't connect using 5GHz

    Hi Everyone,
I've got an Airport Express set up in "join a network" mode out in my living room for Airtunes and to provide network to my blueray player that doesn't have wireless. I've got a dual band DLink dir-825 router in my den.
My problem is that the AE won't connect using the 5GHz spectrum. It does connect just fine in the 2.4GHz at N speeds, but it refuses to move up to the 5GHz spectrum.
I also have a mac mini that does connect just fine using 5GHz and N.
Is there any way to force the AE to join my network using 5GHz N instead of 2.4GHz N?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

adsfushi, I just set up a dual network with my roommate tonight... we have two separate networks - one 5ghz (he can connect to it) and a 2.4 ghz that I can connect to, but I can't access the 5 ghz. It simply won't recognize me. Why would that be? I have an airport express and use a 24 inch imac. He has a mac book pro.

  • I use XPSP2. I use FF 3.6.22 because of Roboform. I'm reluctant to update FF because I don't know what will work with XP XP2 (won't be using XP3). Which FF ve

Roboform lied to me when I purchased it, promising that I would receive all updates AND upgrades "for life." Then they apparently colluded with FF to turn that into a lie, because they didn't grandfather-in the customers to whom they made this promise for free upgrades. I will never buy any version of Roboform again.
I still use FIREFOX 3.6.22 because that is the last version that my version of Roboform works with. I use XP SP2. Because I don't want Microsoft's spyware and controlware on my PC, I won't be using SP3 or any version beyond XP. I will be moving completely to Linux when what I have no longer serves my needs.
I can't upgrade Firefox to any version more recent than 3.6.22 because FF has not made it clear which is the highest version that works properly with XP SP2. I can't run any version that requires XP SP3 to run properly.

Hi there! Actually, Roboform works with modern versions of Firefox. Please update to Roboform 7.9.0, and update Firefox to version 22 immediately. Continuing to use Firefox 3.6 is leaving your computer at risk for MAJOR security holes, plus known stability and performance issues. Please update immediately.
Also, Firefox will work perfectly fine with XP SP2, but there is no reason why you shouldn't update XP to SP3

  • On-board Wifi Card won't connect, but usb wifi does

My onboard wifi no longer connects - it does not even detect wireless networks interestingly. I can still connect using a wifi usb stick, though.
The onboard device is not even listed on ifconfig now (it was before, even when not working).
I guess it's broken, but just wondering if any experts on here might have more information?

We need more information to work with.  See the wireless wiki page to find a list of commands that will produce informative output.
At the very least `lspci -vnn | grep -i net` is needed before anything can be done.
Also a better description of when this stopped working.  Was it recent?  Was it with an upgrade?  Was it on a different OS?

  • Toshiba laptop with Atheros AR5008X won't connect to Linksys WRT350N

Please excuse the level of detail, but I believe you need a reasonably complete picture if you are to understand the problem well enough to give a complete answer.
    SETUP & BACKGROUND
I have three N-compliant devices and several G-compliant devices on my network. I also have two routers, one being used an an access point. The first is a Linksys WRT350N; the second is a Linksys WRT54G. I have the G router connected as an access point so that I can reserve the N router for the N devices and achieve N speeds.
    N devices:
Toshiba laptop; network adapter is Intel 4965AGN.
Toshiba laptop; network adapter is Atheros AR5008X
    Lexmark Wireless printer
    Router settings:
WRT350N: Security Mode WPA2 Personal; Encryption AES; Network Mode N-only; Radio Band 40MHz.
WRT54G: Security Mode WPA Personal; Encryption AES; Network Mode Mixed
The best I can recall, I set the WRT54G to WPA Personal instead of WPA2 Personal because one of the G-compliant devices did not list the WPA2 Personal setting -- but this is based on memory only.
To reserve the WRT350N for the N devices and achieve N speeds, I set the Wireless Mode to N-only and Radio Band to 40MHz., and each router broadcasts its own unique SSID. Once I set everything up, I saw a substantial increase in the link speed reported by the Toshiba Connectivity Doctor (I realize there are issues about taking these numbers at face value, but let me continue). The Toshiba Connectivity Doctor reported WRT350N link speed at 130 Mbps and everything appeared to be working well.
    PROBLEM
Until recently, no problems were apparent; the Toshiba Connectivity Doctor indicated the two laptops connected to the WRT350N at 130 Mbps, the printer connected to and printed via the WRT350N, and all G devices connected through the WRT54G. Recently, however, network performance declined and the Toshiba Connectivity Doctor indicated erratic link speeds ranging from 1 Mbps to 130 Mbps.
I found through a little research that my quest to reserve the WRT350N router for N devices lacked one element: according to Linksys help for the router, setting the N Transmission Rate to anything other than Auto results in denying access to B/G clients.
I set the N Transmission Rate to 270 Mbps (the highest setting). The Linksys printer works fine and the Toshiba Connectivity Doctor indicates a solid 130 Mbps link speed for the Toshiba laptop with the Intel 4965AGN adapter card.
The other Toshiba (with the Atheros AR5008X adapter card), however, is now only able to connect to the WRT54G (the Toshiba Connectivity Doctor indicates a solid link speed of 54 Mbps to the G SSID). If I reset the WRT350N N Transmission Rate to Auto, the Toshiba with the Atheros card can once again connect to the N Router -- but the erratic link speeds and the network degradation returns also.
I have verified that the Atheros AR5008X network adapter is N-compliant. There aren't many settings on the Atheros AR5008X adapter card configuration, but I can find no documentation on the Internet for this card.
As far as I can determine, all firmware is up to date for both routers and all drivers are up to date for both adapter cards.
I'd love to know what changed in the first place, but I'm more concerned with fixing this problem. Anyone have any ideas as to how I can get the Atheros adapter card to connect to the WRT350N with the N Transmission Rate set to something other than Auto?

Atheros adapters using windows drivers wont work with N routers, ive read somewhere
    Download drivers at: http://www.atheros.cz.

  • New iMac 5k won't connect using ethernet

I was in the process of transferring VMWare/Windows from my MacPro to my new 5k iMac. With VMWare help I started transferring a 25 GB file and noticed it was going to take quite a while wirelessly, so I connected both macs to my Actiontec modem/ router. The MacPro connected effortlessly, but the new iMac won't properly connect. In the Network box it says "Ethernet has a self assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the internet". The connection shows a yellow dot. I tried manually assigning 192.168.1.6 (from the Actiontec log on page) and the Network page says connected (dot turns green), yet when I turn off wifi there is no connection. I've tried other options such as "using DCHP with manual address", but am unable to connect via ethernet cable.
A few days ago, when working with Apple support, I believe we did use ethernet successfully. Thoughts?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Airport Card won't connect after changing wireless networks

    Hello,
I have a black macbook with an internal airport extreme wireless card. I use the computer at school and at home. Both school and home have functioning wireless networks in which other computers are connected and running with no problems.
When I open my laptop and wake it from sleep after changing from school to home or visa versa the airport card often will not recognize the wireless network. On many occations, even when the network is recognized it will not automatically connect to it (I have it set to do). A message saying "There was an error joining the network" comes up. The only resolution has been to reset the computer (which doesn't always work) or reset the PRAM.
Sometimes after reseting the PRAM the computer doesn't even recognize that I have an airport card installed at all. When this happens I have to reset the PRAM again to resolve it.
As a final note, when the computer doesn't automatically recognize the network and I click on the desktop wireless network icon, I get the "spinning beach ball" for a period of time before the drop down box with the available networks shows up. This seems strange to me because it shouldn't be a RAM issue as I have 2GB of ram installed on this computer.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Try the following:
    Delete Preferred Network(s)
    - System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Configure
    - In the "By default, join:" pull-down menu, select "Preferred networks"
    - Delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list
    Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
    - Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
    - Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
    - Restart, or log out then back in.
    Add Preferred Network(s)
    - System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Configure
    - In the "By default, join:" pull-down menu, select "Preferred networks"
    - Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
    - Restart or log out then back in.
If you haven't already, you may want to consider creating a network location for each (school & home) with the appropriate network settings required for connectivity at each. For each location, you can set the preferred network.

  • Airport Card won't connect to the internet

I recently got my first Mac.  It is a used MacPro and it ran off of the G4 OS.  I upgraded to the MAC OX X Tiger system.  The problem I am running into is that I cannot get it to connect to the internet.  I have tried to use the wireless router that we have and have hard lined it with an ethernet cable.  Both of which won't work.  Are there any updates that I can use to get it connected to the internet?  How can I hook this up?  HELP!

No software updates are needed to connect to the Internet. Macs have been good at Internet long before Mac OS X.
The Mac is so simple to set up from scratch that an earlier model was called the Internet Mac, now shortened to iMac.
Ethernet cables have fewer variables, so I would recommend starting with that.
    System preferences > Network > Ethernet ...
    ... (Assist me) > (Assistant) ...
... and set it up again from scratch (by answering the questions) including a new "Location", NOT "Automatic". This procedure eliminates all the old users preferences and starts over with no pre-conceived notions.
Be sure to (Apply) or close the window and save changes to have them take effect. Occasionally, a Restart is needed after making extensive changes to get them to "take".

  • Airport Extreme card won't connect

eMac 1.25 GHz (USB) trying to connect to Linksys WRT54G router
Purchased an Airport Extreme card on eBay.
It sees router immediately, but when I try to connect it gives the extremely informative message:
" There was an error joining the Airport network "(name)"
I have a number of other Macs and PCs and my Blackberry and my son's iPhone that can successfully connect, but not this beast. I have reinstalled the card several times with no success. I'm guessing it's ok since it sees my router immediately. I've entered the password 100% correctly. I've even reconfigured the router not to require a password. Same thing. In desperation, I've even tried reconfiguring the eMac to use only 1GB RAM after seeing that suggested for a similar iBook problem. No help.
So... how do I determine what the "error" was that's preventing connection? And how do I fix it?
    Any suggestions welcome.
    Thanks,
    Rich

As this is not too likely to be an problem specific to eMacs, you may get more responses by posting in the Airport forums here:

  • Yoga 10 HD+ won't connect using bluetooth tethering

My Yoga 10 HD+ is running KitKat. It pairs quite happily with my Samsung Galaxy Note 3. The bluetooth connection works well for transferring files/photos etc but will not work as a tethered internet connection.
On the bluetooth connection there is an option to "Use this connection for internet access" which I have ticked, but still when I try it says I am offline and should switch on either my WiFi of 3G connection.
It tethers and connects to the internet fine if I use WiFi as the connection between phone & tablet but the tablet just won't use the bluetooth connection to access the internet despite the ticked option to do so.
    Anybody got any ideas ?
Come on Lenovo, let's get it sorted.

This may not work for you, but it did for me. Just got mine as well, 10 HD+, and I had no working bluetooth. It would just keep searching and would stop after about 15 seconds. I had to do two restarts to fix my problem.
I think all of those updates I had to do the moment I took it out of the box (3 if i remember) cause the issue. Again, it took TWO restarts, on the second restart when I tried the bluetooth it worked.
After that I could connect to Bluetooth devices (tried on two diff. speakers) and I could recognize and stream music accordingly.
    Hope this helps!

I can connect from my Win XP laptop so no issues with the router etc, do I need to make any changes to the server config?

  • Will 2 iPads with the same Apple ID connect using facetime?

I recently bought a second iPad 2 for my business. Naturally I use the same Apple ID on both to sync apps and data. I will be away on holiday in a few weeks and want to lend one iPad to my mother, who is ill, to keep in touch with her using Facetime.
When I try to connect one to the other with Facetime, it calls briefly and then says neither of us are available for Facetime. Is this because Facetime is linked to the same Apple ID with the same email address? Do I need to set up an account for my mother? How then can I share my apps and data?
I've tried all the suggestions on this forum including changing DNS servers and nothing works. I think Apple should set up an FAQ for Facetime. They might just help with supporting very expensive products.
Any advice would be very welcome?
    Thanks,

    Hello there, Flamingo1000.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great recommendations for what to do before giving away your iOS device:
What to do before selling or giving away your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5661
If you still have your iOS device
Before you sell or give away your iOS device, make sure that you've removed all of your personal information. Follow these steps to protect your data and get your device to its factory default state for the new owner:
    Back up your device.
Go to Settings > General > Reset, then tap Erase All Content and Settings.
This will completely erase your device and turn off iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, Game Center, and other services.
If you're using iOS 7 and have Find My iPhone turned on, your Apple ID and password will be required. After you provide your password, the device will be erased and removed from your account so that the next owner can activate it.
Contact your carrier for guidance on transferring service to the new owner.
When the device is turned on for the first time by the new owner, Setup Assistant will guide them through the setup process.
Important: Do not manually delete contacts, calendars, reminders, documents, photo streams, or any other iCloud data while signed in to your iCloud account, or the content will also be deleted from the iCloud servers and all of your iCloud devices.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

  • IPad 3 with iOS 6 won't connect to Wifi Hotspot

I have a new iPad running iOS 6.01.  It connects to wifi networks perfectly.  I also own a Blackberry 9900 that is capable of running a wifi hotspot.  The iOS6 iPad will not connect to my hotspot.
It is NOT the hotspot that is the problem. PCs connect to it as does my Android tablet.  In fact I tried an iPad 2 with iOS v5.x and it connected instantly as well.
This is an iOS 6 problem I am positive.  Any ideas anyone?  Reseting network connections does not work.
    Thanks,
    Shawn

I tried the method above several times however I had to refine it using the following method:
Once I received the message on the iPad settings window "unable to connect to network" I unticked the hotspot  option on the blackberry. The mobile network and Wi-Fi boxes on your blackberry should both remain ticked, retick the hotspot box on your blackberry and only when the word "connecting" appears next to the box select the join button on the network settings on your iPad or choose your hotspot in the network list.
You should now be able to switch between your Wi-Fi networks and your hotspot, if this does not automatically happen then Repeat of the above process waiting for the word "connecting" before joining the hotspot network.
Now you're not forced to buy an iPhone!!!
