PB with safari: extensions, bookmarks, history

Hi there,
I'm in trouble with safari since I've upgraded to 5.1.2. First symptom was that adblock extension is not working, then I realized I could not install any extension (I just get a message that an error occured) and no history or bookmarks are saved after I quit safari.
I'v tried to perform the changes in the ~/Library/... as adviced in this forum but nothing is effective for me.
Moreover, I have a huge memory leaks pb: with 10 minutes more than 5GB are set to inactive letting the system fighting with less than 10MB...
CPU. I have to do a purge regularly if I want to be able to do something with my MBP 17" mid 2010. That's maybe for another thread.
I've tried to reinstall lion 3 times. The safari problems remains. I'd be very grateful if anyone could help me solving this problem other than telling me to switch to chrome or firefox :-)
Thanks in advance.

If you weren't in safe mode, this may not work, but let's assume that you were.
Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to the state it’s in now. If you skip this step, no one but you will be responsible for the consequences.
Quit Safari if it’s running.
Step 1
Select /Applications/Safari in the Finder and open the Info window. There’s a checkbox in that window labeled “Open in 32-bit mode.” If that box is checked, uncheck it. Close the window.
Hold down the option key and select Go > Library from the Finder menu bar (Lion) or open the Library subfolder of your home folder (pre-Lion). Delete the following items from the Library folder (some may not exist):
Caches/com.apple.Safari
Caches/Metadata/Safari
Saved Application State/com.apple.Safari.savedState
Leave the Finder window open. Try Safari again.
Step 2
If it still doesn’t work right, quit, go back to the Finder, and move the following file to the Desktop:
Safari/Bookmarks.plist
Then delete the following items (some may not exist):
Cookies/Cookies.binarycookies
Cookies/Cookies.plist
Preferences/com.apple.Safari.LSSharedFileList.plist
Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Preferences/com.apple.Safari.RSS.plist
PubSub/Database
Safari
Try again. This time Safari should perform normally, but your settings will be lost. Select File > Import Bookmarks from the Safari menu bar. Import from the bookmarks file you moved to the Desktop. Recreate the rest of your Safari settings. You can then delete the old bookmarks file.
Note: This step will remove your Safari Extensions, if any, and their settings. If you choose to restore them, do so one at a time, testing after each to make sure you haven’t restored the problem.
If you don’t like the results of step 2, you can undo it completely by quitting Safari and restoring the items you deleted in that step from your backup, overwriting any that were created in their place. You don’t need to restore the files you deleted in step 1.

  • Recently migrated to new laptop, backuped with FEBE. Bookmarks, History not saving anything since then

About a month ago I backed up my full profile and bookmarks from my old computer and restored/imported them into the new one using FEBE and the "Import and backup" tab, respectively. Both have the latest (18) version of Firefox. I followed all the steps to restore the old full profile into a new one, and then imported the bookmarks. So far so good.
At the beginning it was all fine, but about a week ago I realised I can't bookmark, nor see any history saved in the corresponding log windows. When I press Ctrl+D I don't get any window asking for confirmation to save the bookmark. When I try to make Firefox Show All History, I get a completely blank page. Nothing at all. I've tried disabling all the extensions to no avail. Still the same problem. I've tried closing and reopening Firefox, restarting the computer, same. I also checked the places.sqlite file, it's fine.
By the way, all the "Ctrl+Shift+B", "Ctrl+D", "Ctrl+Shift+H", "Ctrl+Shift+Del" options are in light grey, as if they had been disabled. On the contrary, the "Show All Bookmarks", "Bookmark This Page", "Show All History" and "Clear Recent History" ones are in black, as normal.
I've tried a few tentative solutions, none has worked so far. Please help. Thank you very much for any comments or observations.

Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.
You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox Profile Folder.

  • How to undo Safari copying bookmarks, history, favorites, and reading list from Macbook Pro to iMac after Yosemite update?

I just updated my iMac 27inch Mid 2011 to Yosemite 10.10.2.  I have a Macbook Pro that I primarily use for everyday stuff. I upgraded to Yosemite a while ago on my macbook. Now that I upgraded my iMac, it transferred everything saved in Safari on my macbook pro to my iMac. My favorites, history, bookmarks, and reading list were copied over. This is driving me nuts! I had a separate set of data saved on the iMac because I use it for different purposes. All of the original bookmarks, favorites, history, etc. on my iMac are now gone. I logged out of iCloud (which was a feature I did not enjoy when upgrading to Yosemite) yet all of the safari data from my laptop is still cloned onto my iMac. Please tell me there is a way to undo this or refresh safari pre-Yosemite update!
    Thank you!

Then there's no way to recover the lost data. You will lose every bit of data you have if you don't start backing up.

  • Bookmarks with Safari on iPhone

    Hi.
I've got a rather stupid/perhaps very simple question about the bookmarks on Safari.
I want to get rid of the Bookmarks Bar & Bookmarks Menu folder on my iPhone. On my computer I predominately use Firefox but I did create bookmarks for Safari so I have them on my iPhone. I've tried going onto Safari and edit the bookmarks but it will not let me remove these two folders. Any suggestions ?
    Thanks.

    Hi Aubrey-Jay,
I just figured this out today.
    Solution (for Mac):
    1. Open Safari
    2. View > Hide Bookmarks Bar
    3. Safari > Preferences > Bookmarks > uncheck Include bookmarks bar
    4. Close Safari
    5. Connect your iPhone to iTunes
    6. Info tab > under Web Browser, select Sync Safari bookmarks
    7. Info tab > under Advanced, select Bookmarks
    8. Apply
This will sync up to the new settings we've done in steps 2 and 3, doing so will remove the Bookmarks Bar & Bookmarks Menu folder.
Once done syncing, you need to unselect the Sync Safari bookmarks and click Apply. That way, next time you connect your iPhone to iTunes, it will no longer sync up with Safari's bookmarks.
    Best Regards,

  • Safari extensions have been migrated...to ?

After some routine updates I opened Safari and a window popped up with 'safari extensions have been migrated'.  It didn't say
to where, nor did it say why!  It also said something to the effect that I could get select extensions on the Apple site.
I'm a long time Mac user and have never encountered such (since OS6) but not a formal tech.   The appearance is that
Apple is monkeying around with a surreptitious update??? I connected with Apple's joint online support (pretty neat).
The rep had me toss 3 apps:  Clean My Mac, Mac Pilot and Mac Cleanse (Koingo software) but she
didn't answer the question.  It seemed perfunctory and did not resolve the issue.
I did find and removed 3 Trojan Horse files (using ClamAV-direct and removed them along with two bad plugins, ytime
and ensure.  That's reassuring but the issue remains:  open Safari and get the above!
Does anyone know what is going on here?

If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide and AdwareMedic.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect everything targeting the Mac.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.

    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something

OK, it now sort of works. A couple of problems here:
After updating IOS, Safari iCloud was "automatically" switched off
Switching it on had no effect
resetting my iPad automatically switched off safari iCloud again
after switching it back on, it said "turning off safari data"
switched it off and on again, now it said : "turning on safari data" and the sync worked
    On IOS 7 no problems
The bookmarks not being displayed was because after pressing the book icon, it defaulted to showing the history and I had to press "Back" to get to the other options

  • New iPhone 6. Windows 8 desktop. Running Firefox browser as my default. Would like to sync my Bookmarks with Safari on iPhone 6.

New iPhone 6. This s my first iPhone. Windows 8 laptop. Running Mozilla Firefox browser as my default. Would like to sync my Firefox Bookmarks with Safari on iPhone 6.
It would be nice if Firefox was available on the iPhone, but apparently it is not.
If I could do a direct sync of Bookmarks between Firefox on a W8 machine and the iPhone, that would be nice.
Assuming I can't, I have installed Safari of my W8 laptop,
I exported my Bookmarks from Firefox, and then imported them in Safari.
    First question:
Safari shows my Bookmarks in a way that is different from Firefox. It shows all the folders fown the left side of the window. If I want to see a saved bookmark within one of the folders, I have to click on the folder name and then the contents are shown in a separate panel off to the right. Can I get all Bookmark folders to open up vertically, that is, down the left side and under the folder name as they do in Firefox?
    Second question:
How do I sync the bookmarks so that all hoes-based bookmarks are downloaded to my iPhone. An articel I read speaks of connecting my iPhone to the laptop. I have no idea of how to do that.
Thank you for any help. Not sure what Community to post this in. Sorry. Newbie new to A

I have loaded my Firefox bookmarks into Internet Explorer Favorited. I also uninstalled Safari.
I go to iTunes on my phone and see no wat to connect my iPhone to my laptop. I see Music, Shows, etc., the kind of stuff I would expect, but no clue as to how to proceed.
Would you please be so kind to fill me in on how to "That syncing is done via iTunes. Connect the device to iTunes, select it, then go to the Summary page and select to sync bookmarks."?
I am not sure what you mean by "Summary Page"

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
Make sure that Firefox is closed (Firefox > Quit Firefox) when you remove files in the profile folder.
You can also create a new profile.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

You can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile if you want to keep some data.

  • My bookmarks and history have disappeared, and I no longer have a FF profile which is supposed to be located in Library/Application Support. Any suggestions on how to resolve? I'm most concerned with recovering my bookmarks.

I have tried restarting my computer, creating a new places database (there is no FF profile in Application Support so cannot create a new one), and restoring bookmark back-ups, none of which have resolved the problem.

Problem solved! I got fed up dealing with Firefox without any history or bookmarks for 2 months and had lost hope of ever recovering my bookmarks. So I decided to uninstall Firefox and then re-install it so I could at least use Firefox properly and just start over with bookmarks. After re-installing and opening for the first time, all of my bookmarks were there!
To uninstall drag the Firefox icon from the Applications folder into the trash. I emptied the trash (not sure if necessary). I then downloaded the latest version of firefox from mozilla.com and followed the prompts to install. After opening for the first time, all of my bookmarks were there, as well as the history up to the time the issues began two months ago.

I started to learn HTML, and I'm using text edit and everything is going fine, when I save the file with a .html extension and open it with safari I only view the code and not the webpage that was supposed to be created.

That is because you don't have a web server configured and running to serve the html page. In order to see the page in a browser you need to access it using a url similar to http://localhost/~yourUserName if you are serving the page from your user account.
Prior to Mountain Lion you could go into web sharing and turn on the web server. With Mountain Lion there is no option, other than using terminal, to turn on the web server. The web sharing menu item has been removed in Mountain Lion. Apache is still on your computer but it will take a little searching these forums or the Internet to find how to turn it on.
If you want a graphic user interface to turn on/off the Apache server you could download and install a server application like xampp, http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html. I use this and it works well.

I have purchased a new iMac, with Safari 5.0.5, but it won't retain bookmarks, I thought I can download a new Safari from Apple. So I deleted Safari from the application folder.
Then I tried to download Safari from Firefox but after finish download, what I got was a dmg file, with a pkg icon (an opened box) and it can't be installed. Same with Google Chrome.
My question is: how can I download Safari? And will it retain bookmarks?

Reinstall Safari from the Optional Installs.pkg on your Mac install disc that came with your iMac. Or in your case, you use Pacifist to extract the Safari app from the .dmg file.
    To bookmark a webpage:
Go to the webpage you want to bookmark. If you use tabs, you can open multiple webpages in tabs to bookmark them as a collection.
Choose Bookmarks > Add Bookmark, or Bookmarks > “Add Bookmarks for These Tabs.”
Type a name for the bookmark or collection in the dialog that appears.
Specify where you want to keep the bookmark or collection. You can add it to the bookmarks bar, the Bookmarks menu, or to a collection if you have created any.
    Click Add.
To add a bookmark quickly, click the Add button in the toolbar, or drag the webpage’s icon from the address field to the bookmarks bar.
To see your bookmarks, choose Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks.
In the future, rather then deleting an app, come here and ask for help first. More times then not, you will save yourself time and trouble.

  • Safari 4 will not import bookmarks saved with Safari 3.2.3!

Safari 4.0 (Build 530.17) for Windows DOES NOT correctly import bookmarks saved with Safari 3.2.3 for Windows!! There are no links!! But it does import the folders.
For example if I open the bookmarks in Safari, it looks like an HTML file. It says this:

    http://www.romnation.net/srv/emulators/mame.html
    http://www.romnation.net/srv/download/rom/25758/mame/Tron-set-1.html

But when I go to the File Menu and choose "Import bookmarks..." it will only import the Folder names, such as "Games" but NOT the web links.
    It does not import these:
