Pb won't boot up after routine software update

HELP!
Recently my PB has been giving me messages that my HD was almost full. I have erased and backed up some (but not all) files. I did a routine software update and after this the same message about my HD came up. My computer has not booted since then! I contacted apple and it seems that I will loose everything. I upgraded to Tiger and used that disk utility-it was "green" but when I went to try to do an archive and restore, it did not give me that option (unfortunately). Why?
Is it possible that the update extended me over the 10% needed for the system to work properly? If so, what can I do to save my files?
powerbook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

you could try to preserve your files using firewire target disk mode if you have access to another mac with builtin firewire and some space on the hard drive. this article outlines the procedure. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583

  • Macbook will not boot up after running Software Update

My MacBook will not boot up after running Software Update (Security update + Java?) earlier today. I have only the gray start up screen + Apple logo + gear wheel constantly rotating. I have tried restarts several times and tried to start up from my original system DVD - this makes no difference.
I called Apple support, tried resetting the power and PRAM - still no difference. He had no knowledge of other problems reported; although I note recent post may have same issue.
I cannot get an appointment at my Apple Store before Monday.
    Any suggestions?

Still no success. When I hold down the option key when powering up I get the hard disk icon plus arrowhead (only). When clicking the arrowhead it goes to the gray screen + apple logo+ rotating gearwheel.
This happens both with DVD in slot and without DVD. the DVD image is not coming up on screen. When I start up without DVD the hard disk icon appears promptly. When I start with DVD in the DVD is spinning for a short period before the hard disk icon appears. On clicking the arrowhead to hard disk icon the DVD spins again for a while then stops. Apart from the DVD spinning, both situations result in gray screen + apple logo+ rotating gearwheel.

  • Macbook will not boot up after running Software Update (Couldn't fix it)

    Hi there,
I also have been experiencing some problems after running Software Update (Security update + Java) a couple of days ago. Similarly to Jandaf (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9000023) I have only the gray start up screen + Apple logo + gear wheel constantly rotating. Based on the information provided in this forum I have tried some procedures which didn't solved my problem so far. Below I describe I have tried:
    1) I have booted using the installation DVD and run the disk utility. When performing the First Aid/Verify Disk I found some errors ('Invalid node structure'). But I couldn't fix the problem using disk repair (same problem 'Invalid node structure' 'Volume check failed'.
    2) I also tried to boot in single user mode (command + s) to run fsck -fy. It didn't work. I got the following message (last 4 lines):
    CSRHIDTTransitionDriver::probe: -s
CSRHIDTTransitionDriver::probe: booting in single user .. do not match
Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleUSBTCKeyboard" has no kernel dependency.
Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleUSBTCEventDriver" has no kernel dependency.
    3) When trying to boot in safe mode. I got a grey screen with the following message:
'You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button".
    4) I also tried to 'Archieve & Instal'. Again no success. After reading the DVD the action is terminated because some errors (does not specify).
    5) I also tried the 'German Medicine' (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8728797#8728797) (i.e. Connect the 'problematic MacBook' to my old G4 via firewire and reinstall the 2009-001 update). Again no success. The G4 cannot mount the MacBook hardrive.
I don't know what to do any more.
    A) Can I resuscitate my old system? If yes how?
    B) If not, can I at least save the data I have in my old HD?
    C) Is it possible to format and reinstall the OS or is this this computer doomed?
Apologies for writing so many questions but I'm really freaking out!
    Thank you.
    B.

    Hi BDAqua,
I did as you said and got a firewire backup drive (Seagate - FreeAgent Desk 500GB). I tried to make a carbon copy of HD but it seems that the copy had some problems. Below I report both the CCC and console logs:

  • Problems booting up after failed software update

    Hi all...
I have an iBook G4 running 10.4.9. I just ran a software update, and a few things like itunes and iphoto updated fine, but the update to 10.4.11 failed. I restarted figuring I'd just try the failed update again after the reboot, but now it won't boot.
It goes past the grey screen, to the blue one with the window that shows the apple logo and "Mac OS_X" with a progress bar underneath.
The progress bar just sits there, and won't advance at all.
I'm just not sure what to do at this point... if the update failed halfway through and theres something messed up, or what... I'm not sure. Any ideas?

    Please pardon the intrusion…

  • My macbook wont boot up after a software update (2/8/2012)

My MacBook Pro will not reboot after a failed software update that was attempted on 2/8/2012. I am not sure if other users have experienced similar issues. It will not go past the white screen.   I have powered down the computer few times already to no avail. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.   Thanks

    Do the following:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • External WD HD stopped working properly after routine software update

    Hello
I have WD my studio external HD connected to my iMac 24" early 2009 with OS 10.6.8. This morning everything was working fine, but then I updated the software after I was prompted. I had not updated the software since last july.
After the update, I got a message saying that the external HD could not be repaired. Very strange, as it was working perfectly before the update. I tried to restart the computer, but i got the same message.
I tried the few usual things (unmounting, disconnetting, repairing with disk utility etc,) with no success. Everything behaves funny, in the sense that sometimes the HD does not mount, sometimes it mounts, but it has a different icon (I used it to back up with time machine), sometimes it is greyish in the list of HD in finder, and I can't change permissions on it (i have write and read permissions, but they're greyish and there's nothing i can do).
    Any suggestions?
    thanks

I tested it on another computer and it works perfectly.
On my regular computer, when I start it, i get this message "Mac OS can't repair the disk "My Book". You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to the files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat if as soon as you can".
As I said earlier, the problem occurred after I updated the software (the software updates that Mac OS always suggests). I worked perfectly before the update, and I got the error message when the Imac restarted after the update.
    Suggestions?

  • MacBook (Mid 2009) won't turn on after installing software updates.

My macbook white (mid 2009) won't turn on. I was going to install mountain lion so I performed a software update. I click install and reboot. It installed within a few minutes, but when it was rebooting the apple logo and the buffering sign popped up, and that went on over night. So I held down the power button to turn it off. It did the same thing, what should I do?

Not the right time to update and go to sleep. What updates? How much free space was on the hard drive?
Try inserting the OS installer disk in the optical drive and powering up holding down the c key.

  • Macbook now takes longer to boot up after recent software update

On 2/19 I installed the following updates for my MacBook -
    iPhoto v6.0.6
    Front Row v1.3.1
AirPort Base Station Update 2007-002 v5.2.1
    iDVD v6.0.4
    MacBook EFI Firmware v1.1
Mac OS X update combined Intel 10.4.11
My MacBook is the 2 ghz intel core 2 duo with 1gb 667 mhz ddr2 sdram, if that matters. What happens is that the initial gray screen during startup is blank for 25 secs. then the Apple logo appears. Soon after, all is quick and good. It's just the weird blank screen that I'm wondering about. Why is it doing this and is this an indication of a problem? What can I do about it? Let me know if you need more info, though I"ll be going to work soon and won't have my laptop.
    Thanks!
    Sue

First thin you et a chance, Use Disk Utility to verify/Repair the HD, then Repair Permissions then reboot, if the problems persist try reinstalling the big Combo update...
The combo update for Intel-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateintel.html
    Repair Permissions afterwards, reboot.
It is generally trying to repair the HD in that "blank" period... or having trouble reading it.

  • Powerbook G4 (OS X 10.4.11) won't boot up after latest security update

My G4 failed to reboot when restarted after latest security updtate.
The gray screen with apple logo and rotating gear stays on forever.
I tried booting in safe mode but same thing occurred.
I was able to boot in single user mode and run fsck -yf and it ran fine.
Then when I tried to boot again, same thing all over again.
I am guessing there must be some problems with new updates in the start-up folder or something. But I am not sure how to get rid of the files related to the new updates. Your help would be really appreciated. Oh, I was also able to run disk utilities application when I inserted Mac OS X installation dvd and booted from it. Then when I try to boot from HD, the same thing all over again...

I just spent a good 3 hrs or so trying to figure out why my imac running os x 10.4.11 wasn't rebooting after I downloaded the latest security update 2009-001. I finally got it running again after browsing the many helpful comments from past rebooting issues. Here are the steps:
    1. On another computer, you'll have to download the security update that you believe froze your mac. In my case it was the 2009-001 update.
    2. Save this file to a usb key, or in my case, to my LACIE backup drive.
    3. Once downloaded, connect the USB key or backup drive to your mac.
    4. Insert your install disc that came with your mac. (I installed disc 1)
    5. Power down your mac. ( I did so by pressing and holding the power button on the back)
    6. Press and hold the 'C' key on your keyboard as you restart your mac.
    7. Let go of 'C' as the apple logo and spinning wheel come on. The start-up disc should start to run.
    8. Choose your language.
    9. At the top of your desktop you'll see 'Terminal'. Start it.
    10. at the prompt, type "mount" to see a list of your volumes (in my case, the volume was LACIE).
    11. type "find /Volumes/nameofyourUSB/*.dmg" Ex. "find /Volumes/LACIE/*.dmg" (This step will give the path of your update).
    12. type "hdiutil attach /Volumes/nameofyourUSB/pathoftheupdate/SecUpd2009-001Intel.dmg" (Note the space after hdiutil AND attach)
    13. type "/Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/usr/sbin/installer -pkg /Volumes/Security\ Update\ 2009-001/SecUpd2009-001Intel.pkg -target /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD" (Note the spaces again. Took me a few tries before I finally got it. If you get it right, you'll notice your hard-drive start to be active. Let it do it's thing before you exit Terminal.
    14. Exit Terminal.
    15. Go to 'Utilities' at the top of the desktop, select 'Startup Disk', and choose your OS (in my case, OS X 10.4.11).
    Good luck!

  • GX70-3CC won't boot windows after vbios firmware update

    Hi all,
I just recently updated my bios and vbios firmware using the latest one, but after the vbios firmware update, i turned on my laptop and all I get is a black screen just after the MSI logo and get stuck there. I can still access the bios and recovery feature (F3 key). I even tried booting it in safe mode and it's still the same. I even tried refreshing and resetting my laptop but again, still the same. I followed the instructions correctly regarding updating the bios and vbios. The bios clearly shows that I am using the latest one when I choose system information in bios. As for the vbios, I can't see in the system information which firmware version I am using currently. However, during the vbios update, it just says that I should reboot my laptop to complete the progress. I didn't reboot my laptop as it says in the instructions that I should turn it off, remove AC adapter and battery then put it back and turn it on.

Well, I updated the BIOS first before updating the VBIOS. After I updated the BIOS i just loaded the optimized values in the BIOS then saved it. My laptop still worked normally until I updated the VBIOS.
By the way, how would I know if my laptop originally used AHCI or RAID? I didn't take notice of this before updating the BIOS

  • Itunes won't recognize ipod after ipod software update

I have an Ipod Classic.  My laptop is a PC running Windows XP.  I have the latest ITunes software (10.5.2.11)
After updating my Ipod software through Itunes, Itunes no longer reads my Ipod.
When I connect the Ipod through the USB cord, the "Connected" screen appears on the Ipod, then the Ipod instantly goes to the "OK to disconnect" screen with the white disconnect bar, without prompting.  All during this time, Itunes never recognizes my Ipod.
Also on the "My Computer" screen, the Ipod is only recognized for the brief instant that the Ipod "Connected" screen appears.  When the Ipod goes to the "OK to disconnect" screen, the Ipod is no longer recognized on the "My Computer" screen.
I'm assuming restoring my Ipod to factory settings is the best way to fix this.  But how do I restore my Ipod if Itunes will never recognize it?

Itunes still does not recognize my Ipod and disconnects it immediately, even after disabling the firewall and anti-virus protection.
    Any other thoughts?

During the next bootup, when the information 'reached target graphical interface' appeared, I got some screen blinking and this:
"[drm:hsw_unclaimed_reg_clear] *ERROR* Unknown unclaimed register before writing to 4a000
This error message and the blinking appears about 8 times, then the process just hangs.
I have tried downgrading each of the aforementioned packages, but it didn't help. There's a bunch of diagnostic stuff coming out of pacman on every operation though:

The first kind of error message, by the glib-2.0 files is Polish for 'file is empty or only contains spaces'; the other kind, by the ldconfig lines, means 'file empty, left unchecked'.
For good measure, here's my entire dmesg output. It seems to contain a bit more information about the unclaimed register error at the end.

Please assist me in getting this fixed.

No, I don't have nouveau-dri installed. It might be the kernel driver. Messages from 'nouveau' have been appearing ever since I've installed the system actually, and I've learned to ignore them, but they did initially make me raise an eyebrow. Anyway, everything was fine and dandy for about 4 months now, until this morning's update, when the packages mentioned in my initial post were installed.
As for the second matter, see my initial post:
The first kind of error message, by the glib-2.0 files is Polish for 'file is empty or only contains spaces'; the other kind, by the ldconfig lines, means 'file empty, left unchecked'.
The one you're asking about is the second ('file is empty, it has not been checked')
I'm now in the process of locating and reinstalling the packages to which these files belong. I've already handled the QT libs (I think) and I'm going to try to handle the others:
    all in the lib32 folder:
    - libelf.so and .so.1 and -0.158.so
    - libdw.so and .so.1 and -0.158.so
    - libasm.so and .so.1 and -0.158.so
    - liblcms2.so and .so.2 and .so.2.0.6
I have no knowledge of how these affect the bootup of Gnome however...
    edit:
I have successfully reinstalled the following packages:
    lib32-lcms2
    lib32-elfutils
    lib32-qt4
    rebooting...
...and still just a mouse cursor over the bootup log...
The last line of dmsg says:
systemd-journald[204] Failed to write entry (26 items, 170304121 bytes) despite vacuuming, ignoring: Argument list too long
is there a way to get a hold of what can't be written in there? I don't know where else to look for information on what's wrong.
There's also this in the journalctl (both the last one and the previous one I pasted). The problem _is_  Gnome rendering nothing but a cursor, so perhaps this could be of use...
    kwi 29 19:59:18 wapiti gnome-session[465]: (gnome-shell:500): GLib-GIO-ERROR **: Settings schema 'org.gnome.settings-daemon.peripherals.touchscreen' is not installed
    kwi 29 19:59:18 wapiti kernel: traps: gnome-shell[500] trap int3 ip:7fb603707993 sp:7fff2a1a55f0 error:0
I have pursued that trail. Indeed, it turned out that my gnome-settings-manager package was completely broken. Its configuration files were empty (the ones in /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas), as was /var/lib/pacman/local/gnome-settings-daemon-3.12.1-2/files file.
I have performed a pacman -S --force gnome-settings-daemon and I'm no longer writing from my girlfriend's PC
I have a follow-up question to the more knowledgable - how and why can a package become corrupted like this??
My Gnome booted up, however it works pretty damn choppy. It's as fast as normal, but there are no animations. Also, there are frequent glitches before a window is rendered. Part of the screen becomes all scrambled for a moment before the window appears.
I'll try to look for reasons on my own, but I'd still appreciate advice on debugging my glitchy Gnome and explanations as to why gnome-settings-daemon had basically wiped itself out...
Ok, on a final note in this topic: the glitches were fixed by force reinstalling xf86-video-intel and intel-dri.
