PB won't turn on and beeps three times

My mac went to sleep automatically and when I went to wake it it took a while before coming back online. Once online it took about 1 minute before freezing. I held the power button down and it finally turned off. Now when I try to start the computer the sleep light starts blinking and the computer beeps at me two or three times than does nothing. I have removed the battery and tried restarting it with just the power cord and I have fully recharged the battery and then tried starting it yet it always does the same thing. Please help! I am deployed and the powerbook is brand new.

If it beeps precisely three times on startup, it means the Ram hasn't passed the startup test. Either one or both banks are faulty. Try and run the apple hardware test on your restore CD/DVD if you can. Insert the disk, restart, and hold now option (the alt key) and select the apple hardware test volume. You could also open the memory compartment and remove one of the banks, swap them round or reseat the ram (experiment to try and track down the problem).
If you not confident with that, it looks like a call to applecare will be appropriate in any case.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

  • My MacBook won't turn on and beeps at me

    Hi,
I took my MacBook in to get the casing replaced becuase it was breaking off around the hand rests.
I got it back, and charged it fully. Then I tried to turn it on. I got the flashing question mark folder. So I kept trying to turn it on using all of the help from the instruction manual. I've gotten it to load up, I enter my password, and it freezes, get to the main page and freeze, but 90% of the time I get nothing or a flashing folder.
I can't insert a disk, or eject a disk using the help provided by Apple.
Most of the time when I start up I get a succession of 8-12 beeps. I also get them if I get to my password or desktop screen.
I reset the PRAM and nothing seemed to change, except now before I enter my password (before it freezes) I can change the screen brightness which I couldn't do before.
Also, when I load up to my desktop, all my files are there. so I know my hardrive isn't burned out.
    Thanks for ANY help!

This is likely a RAM issue. Have a look at this Apple KB article and specifically part B.

  • My MacBook Pro (late 2011) freezes and beeps three times.

I have taken it to the Genius bar, and they said that everything was working fine, and that it passed all of the RAM and memory tests. It has been reseated by myself and the Genius bar as well, and still no luck. Any suggestions??

Run an Apple Hardware Test and see what issues it may pick up:

Also you might download REMBER and run it to check the RAM.  In order to get a sufficient amount of loops, I suggest running it over night.

  • HT5860 Spilled water on MacBook Air 11' 2011. Doesn't turn on instead it beeps three times. What's wrong with it?

I spilled water in my MacBook Air. Not on my keyboard just over it. I dried it as much as I could and at first it wouldn't turn on. Then when I plugged it to charge it it did turn on but then it shut off. The light is green on the cable and instead of turning on it beeps three times then it pauses for a bit and it beeps three times again. What does this mean and what should I do?

It means you pulled electrical power thru a WET computer system and caused compounded damage to what was already damaged.
The obvious has occurred in mixing water and electricity

Three beeps at startup almost always indicate bad RAM. You probably need to get your RAM replaced. Bring it in to Apple for a definitive diagnosis if you are unable to run the Apple HardwareTest

  • My macbook screen won't turn on and it keeps beeping at me...help!

I tryed turning on my macbook pro 13'' and the screen won't turn on and it keeps beeping at me and flashing the white light on the front of the computer at the same time.  any suggestions?

Beeping sounds usually indicate a RAM or logicboard problem.
If you have third party RAM recently installed, put the factory RAM back in.
Use the free MacTracker to find out your correct RAM spec and return the defective RAM for a exchange or buy top tier RAM from Crucial.com or OtherWorld Computing.
If you didn't mess with the RAM, take the machine to Apple for a free eval.

My macbook air won't turn on and when the power button is pushed, it makes a beeping noise. Any suggestions?

    Beeps on startup:
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images.
5 beeps = processor is not usable

  • My HP Pavilion DV7 wont boot up it beeps three times and blinks 1 time

I have been having problems with my HP Pavilion DV7 for the last several months. When I turn it on I get a black screen. It will beep three times and the caps LED will blink one time. When this first started happening I would turn it off and try to turn it on again. Sometimes it would take turning it off and on several times before it would boot up. Now it will not boot up at all. It just does the same thing every time. When I turn the power on I can hear the fan and the beeps and see the light blink but that is all. I have even tried to turn it on in safe mode but still get the same results.

    Hi there @texashunter00
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel.
I understand that your notebook is having trouble booting up properly, and that you are getting a beep/LED code. I am happy to assist you with this.
Assuming the flashing code is a repeating  single flash that would indicate a cpu problem. The beeps are commonly indicating a problem with the RAM. Please see the following, and if necessary reseat the memory cards, and see if the problem remains.
Computer does not start and the LEDs blink or the computer beeps
If after checking through this, you are still having the same beep/led codes, I would recommend you call our technical support at 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region.

  • Powerbook turns on and beeps, nothing else

I've had my Powerbook since late summer and it's been working fine up until this morning.
I put the computer to sleep last night like I always do, then when I tried to bring it back from sleep this morning it was nonresponsive. I restarted and it worked fine for a minute, then a message came up that said it needed to restart, so I did another restart. This happened once more, before the computer would no longer reboot.
Now all it does whe I turn it on is make the usual initial signs of functioning, then it beeps three times and stays black.
Does anyone know whats going on here?
(Resetting the PMU has absolutely no effect whatsoever)

This may apply to you. Three beeps is a symptom of the "Bad Memory Slot" syndrone.

  • Please help!!! Laptop won't come on...just beeps three times!

I took my laptop to the apple store to get the internal ac adapter fixed. When I went to pick it up the guy told me that it might not come on because the battery was drained. So I get home and immediately plug it to charge and try to turn it on, but the fan only came on for a brief moment and I heard the laptop beeps three times. The screen didn't come on or anything. The light on the part you push to open the screen blinks three times as well. I didn't think anything of it at first so I kept it charged for an hour but when I checked on it I noticed it was very hot. I immediately unplugged it and tried to turn it on. Nothing but the beeps and blinking lights. I have tried everything including resetting the pmu. Can someone please help me?

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Return your Powerbook to the Apple store. 3 beeps means there are no good banks of memory found. The blinking sleep LED blinking is part of the boot process, and it blinks the error code the beeps also indicated. FYI, the beeps are:
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable

  • Screen will not come on and the laptop just beeps three times and then pauses then three beeps. Any suggestions?

Having trouble with my MAC Book Pro, when I turn it on the screen does not come on and the laptop beeps 3 times and pauses and beeps 3 times again continuously.

Three beeps indicates a RAM problem.  Take the RAM modules out, clean the contacts with alcohol and install them.  Make certain they are properly seated.
If you have installed new RAM reinstall the original RAM.
    Ciao.
