PBE with blowfish : is this solution secure
Hi,
I have designed a solution do do PBE with blowfish. Assuming there is no weak keys in Blowfish, and using a 160bits key (due to SHA-1) is this code secure ?
MessageDigest md = MessageDigest.getInstance("SHA-1");
byte[] password = "here is the password I use !".getBytes();
byte[] key = md.digest(password); // hash the password on 160bits
SecretKeySpec skspec = new SecretKeySpec(key, "Blowfish"); // prepare the key for the cipher
Cipher cipher = Cipher.getInstance("Blowfish/ECB/PKCS5Padding"); // create the cipher
cipher.init(Cipher.ENCRYPT_MODE,skspec);
byte[] someCipherText = cipher.doFinal(somePlainText); Thanks
Oliver.
Also, Sun should better add public final static constants in the String class to have the names of encodings supported on all platforms:
class String {
public static final String ASCII = "US-ASCII";
public static final String ISOLAT1 = "ISO8859_1";
public static final String UTF8 = "UTF-8";
}This would be a strong sign that at least these minimum encodings will be supported. Alternatively, these constants could be placed in a separate new class or interface (named for example Encoding).
May be there should exist a valid value allowing to specify explicitly the native platform encoding if we still need it.
public static final String NATIVE;Then there would be no more excuse to not use an explicit encoding:
byte[] buffer = new byte[] { (byte)64, (byte)65 (byte)66 };
String abc = new String(buffer, Encoding.ASCII); // returns a string equal to "ABC"
buffer = new byte[] { (byte)0xc4, (byte)0x80, (byte)0 };
abc = new String(buffer, Encoding.UTF8); // returns a string equal to "\u0100\u0000"

I update my exchange server 2013 cu6 with exchange 2007 and my exchange 2013 db shutdown every 25 minute and recover. You have any hotfix I can use for this solution.
Hi,
From your description, you have deployed Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 and Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 in a co-existence environment. After you upgrade to CU6, databases unexpectedly shut down. In your case, here is a kb for your reference.

Apple should make a server hardware/OS with iOS level security. This could compete well with the breach infested pre secure OS/hardware server systems like Windows Linux OSX. It should be structurally immune to phishing etc and could be sold easily as a secure alternative. It should be based on structural hardware based security as has been demonstrated in the iOS operating system and the hardware should be made in secure facilities in the US. Those Chinese put weaknesses into the hardware they make as has been documented on 60 minutes.
Apple's entry in the server market has come and gone - is there a question in there somewhere?

Cloud with Proxies - Proof and solution
Hi all,
I've struggled with this issue for a while, and read many similar posts from those having the same issue. I have found a solution that worked for me and hopefully others.
Essentially, although the Application Manager and other utilities appear to function properly inside a corporate network, the "phone home" services fail to connect, and leave you with an "expired subscription" or various messages similar to "You're not connected to the internet" and so on.
Adobe adamantly states that the software is "Proxy-aware" so there must be other unresolvable issues, and you should kindly ask your IT team to deactivate firewalls, proxies, virus-protection, etc... (yea, right...). You could also request adding exceptions to 6 or so activation servers on a range of ports, which still doesn't work, and take 6 months and 5 levels of management approval.
In reality, "proxy-aware" is only partly accurate, as shown in the graphic below. I monitored PDApp.exe (Adobe Application Manager) with the ProcessExplorer tool (Windows, sysinternals) while doing several network-active tasks to see where the traffic was being routed.
So, PDApp.exe gets correctly routed via my proxy server for installing apps, running updates, and logging in to the app when opening it up.
However, when getting "Subscription Expired" and "Unable to connect to the internet" and clicking "Try Again" or "Licence this Software", the proxy is ignored and the app attempts to connect directly to ims-na1.adobelogin.com, which fails.
The worst part of this was I went through the 5 levels of management approval and so on to get the two servers Adobe states you need access to for Cloud added as exceptions to our firewall(https://activate.adobe.com and https://lm.licenses.adobe.com/, on ports 23, 80 and 443), and still got nowhere, because without ims-na1.adobelogin.com, you can't proceed past the screen above.
Now, for my solution:
I searched for software that would force a program to use a specific proxy. I came across lots, I have to experience with these so I can't vouch for any particular one, but I chose "Proxifier". (They have one that doesn't require an installer for those who don't have local admin rights.) This one is a trial, I'm sure there are free ones as well, just search a bit more.
The proxy server address can be deduced from watching working software traffic in Process Explorer (right click on "Internet Explorer" and got to properties, then TCP/IP, I could see the proxy being addressed under "Remote address", as see in the graphics above). Alternatively just ask your IT team.
I won't get into how to set up the software, read it's help files; what you want is to take any communications from PDApp.exe that are NOT already destined to your proxy server's address and send them to your proxy server's address. (this is important - some communications from PDApp are proxy-aware and redirecting them will cause them to fail)
Hopefully this helps a few people. Despite the issues I love Adobe's software, and am happy I am using it again.Thanks for taking a read Jeff, and passing along the information.
My company uses an ISA proxy server (HTTP protocol)
Like many such systems, ISA server does not allow SSL tunnels to ports other than 443 and 563 by default (PDApp attempts to use ports 80 and 8080). The reasoning is that SSL tunnels bypass security policy rules and inspection and therefore creates a security risk, which is taken quite seriously (especially with a company this size (37,000+). Check out http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc302684.aspx for more detail.
As an addendum to the initial post, it is critical that the IT team allows SSL tunnels to the required ports. I hadn't noticed this originally as the policy was adjusted to allow access to the addresses Adobe originally provided.
I might add a disclaimer that the software mentioned above and similar can also be used to try and circumvent a company's internet security policies, so make sure you can demonstrate that it is being used to force the proxy server rather than avoid it! -
Invalid stream header Exception - AES PBE with SealedObject
I am trying to do an PBE encryption with AES algorithm and SunJCE provider, using the SealedObject class to encrypt/decrypt the data...
And Im still getting the "invalid stream header" exception. Ive searched this forum, readed lots of posts, examples etc...
Here is my code for encryption (i collected it from more classes, so hopefully I didnt forget anything...):
//assume that INPUT_STREAM is the source of plaintext
//and OUTPUT_STREAM is the stream to save the ciphertext data to
char[] pass; //assume initialized password
SecureRandom r = new SecureRandom();
byte[] salt = new byte[20];
r.nextBytes(salt);
SecretKeyFactory factory = SecretKeyFactory.getInstance("PBKDF2WithHmacSHA1");
KeySpec keySpec = new PBEKeySpec(pass, salt, 1536, 128);
SecretKey pbKey = factory.generateSecret(keySpec);
SecretKeySpec key = new SecretKeySpec(pbKey.getEncoded(), "AES");
Cipher ciph = Cipher.getInstance("AES/CTR/NoPadding");
ciph.init(Cipher.ENCRYPT_MODE, key);
ByteArrayOutputStream byteOut = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
int ch;
while ((ch = INPUT_STREAM.read()) >= 0) {
byteOut.write(ch);
SealedObject sealed = new SealedObject(byteOut.toByteArray(), ciph);
BufferedOutputStream bufOut = new BufferedOutputStream(OUTPUTSTREAM);
ObjectOutputStream objOut = new ObjectOutputStream(bufOut);
objOut.writeObject(sealed);
objOut.close();
}And here is my code for decrypting:
//assume that INPUT_STREAM is the source of ciphertext
//and OUTPUT_STREAM is the stream to save the plaintext data to
char[] pass; //assume initialized password
SecureRandom r = new SecureRandom();
byte[] salt = new byte[20];
r.nextBytes(salt);
SecretKeyFactory factory = SecretKeyFactory.getInstance("PBKDF2WithHmacSHA1");
KeySpec keySpec = new PBEKeySpec(pass, salt, 1536, 128);
SecretKey pbKey = factory.generateSecret(keySpec);
SecretKeySpec key = new SecretKeySpec(pbKey.getEncoded(), "AES");
BufferedInputStream bufIn = new BufferedInputStream(INPUT_STREAM); //MARK #1
ObjectInputStream objIn = new ObjectInputStream(bufIn);
SealedObject sealed = (SealedObject) objIn.readObject();
byte[] unsealed = (byte[]) sealed.getObject(key); //MARK #2
ByteArrayInputStream byteIn = new ByteArrayInputStream(unsealed);
int ch;
while ((ch = byteIn.read()) >= 0) {
OUTPUT_STREAM.write(ch);
OUTPUT_STREAM.close();Everytime I run it, it gives me this exception:

Can this be a problem? I assume that maybe yes... but don't know what to do...
When I delete the r.nextBytes(salt); from both routines, the hashCodes are the same, but that's not the thing I want to do...
I think, that the source of problem can be this part of code (generating the key):
SecretKeyFactory factory = SecretKeyFactory.getInstance("PBKDF2WithHmacSHA1");
KeySpec keySpec = new PBEKeySpec(pass, salt, 1536, 128);
SecretKey pbKey = factory.generateSecret(keySpec);
SecretKeySpec key = new SecretKeySpec(pbKey.getEncoded(), "AES");But I derived it from posts like: [http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5307763] and [http://stackoverflow.com/questions/992019/java-256bit-aes-encryption] and they claimed it's working there...
Is there anyone that can help me?
Btw, I don't want to use any other providers like Bouncycastle etc. and I want to use PBE with AES and also SealedObject to store the parameters of encryption...Yes, it really uses only one Cipher object, but it does decoding in a little nonstandard (not often used) way, by using the SealedObject class and its getObject(Key key) method. You can check these links for documentation: [http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/guides/security/crypto/CryptoSpec.html#SealedObject] and [http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/api/javax/crypto/SealedObject.html] So the question is, why it doesn't work also with the AES routines, because it should.
Btw, according to [http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/guides/security/SunProviders.html#SunJCEProvider] PBEWithSHA1AndDESede/CBC/PKCS5Padding is a valid JCE algorithm for the Cipher class.
Firstly, I was generating the key for AES enc./decryption this way and it was working:
char[] pass; //assume initialized password
byte[] bpass = new byte[pass.length];
for (int i = 0; i < pass.length; i++) {
bpass[i] = (byte) pass;
SecretKeySpec key = new SecretKeySpec(bpass, "AES");
But I think, that it really wasn't secure, so I wanted to build a key from the password using the PBE.
Maybe there's also a way how to do this part of my AES PBE algorithm: *KeySpec keySpec = new PBEKeySpec(pass, salt, 1536, 128);* manually (with my own algorithm), but I dont know how to do it and I'd like it to be really secure.
Btw, thanks for your will to help. -

sudo rm -i /V*/*/.DS_Store
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. Confirm. You don't need to post the warning. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
You may be prompted to remove one or more files named exactly ".DS_Store" (without the quotes.) Press the Y key and then return to confirm. Press the N key and then return if you get any other response, or just close the Terminal window.

New Apps User defaults with all User Edition Privileges - Security Breach?
Please check the following Scenario/Issue and please let me know if anyone has a solution for it.
1. In Apps, created following Responsibilities
- Payables Inquiry-Only User
- Projects Inquiry-Only User
2. In Discoverer Admin, Tools->Privileges, assigned following privilege to "Payables Inquiry-Only User"
- User Edition Parent only (unchecked all child privileges such as Create/Edit Query)
3. In Discoverer Admin, Tools->Security, mapped following Responsibilities/Business Areas (BA)
- Resp: Payables Inquiry-Only User BA: AP Payables
- Resp: Projects Inquiry-Only User BA: PA Projects
4. In Apps, created user DISC_INQUIRY_USER, assigned following responsibilities
- Payables Inquiry-Only User
- Projects Inquiry-Only User
5. At this stage, if user connects to User Edition;
- user is able to create new query in BA: AP Payables or BA: PA Projects depending on login Responsibility
- By default Discoverer assigns all User Edition Privileges to new Apps User including Create/Edit Query
Requirement
1. Create new Apps User DISC_INQUIRY_USER, assign it Inquiry-Only Responsbilities
2. Login to User Edition - DISC_INQUIRY_USER: Payables Inquiry-Only User
- User can inquiry Workbooks associated with Resp: Payables Inqiry-Only user
- Should not be able to create new workbooks
3. Login to User Edition - DISC_INQUIRY_USER: Projects Inquiry-Only User
- User can inquiry Workbooks associated with Resp: Projects Inquiry-Only User
- Should not be able to create new workbooks
Issue
There is time-gap between creating Apps User and login to Discoverer Admin to remove user privileges. This is security Breach, is their any way to change get around it.
- Discoverer gives precedence to Responsibility Privileges over User Privileges. Is their any way to change it?
- Is it possible to change default Privileges for new Apps User?
- I am facing this issue in Discoverer 4.1.48, Does discoverer Admin behaves differently in latest Versions?Nobody helps you except yourself. ;)
So, this query get privileges for user PUBLIC
select eap.ap_id, eap.gp_app_id
from eul5_eul_users eeu,
eul5_access_privs eap
where eeu.eu_username = 'PUBLIC'
and eap.ap_eu_id = eeu.eu_id
and eap.ap_type = 'GP'
In my case
3001 1000
3002 1001
3003 1002
3004 1003
3005 1004
3006 1005
3015 1013
3016 1014
3017 1018
3018 1024
I research а corresponding between gp_app_id (second column) and real name of privilege and get the next list:
1000 Discoverer and Plus Privilege
1001 Create/Edit Query
1002 Item Drill
1003 Drill Out
1004 Grant Workbook
1005 Collect Query Statistics
1006 Administration Privilege
1007 Set Privilege
1008 Create/Edit Business Area
1009 Format Business Area
1010 Create/Edit Summaries
1012 Schedule Workbook
1013 Unknown
1014 Save Workbooks to Database
1015 Manage Scheduled Workbooks
1018 Unknown
1024 Create Link
So, the ID of privilege 'Save Workbooks to Database' is 1014. This privilege exists in table in spite of in Discoverer Administrator this option UNCHECK for user PUBLIC.
This is a REAL BUG!!!
Then I executed query
delete from eul5_access_privs where ap_id = 3016
and after that all became right.
Now please explain me this bug. And I have question - which privileges have IDs 1013 and 1018?
Thank you. -
PBE With SHA1 And DES on SunJCE
Previously i used Bouncy Castle for using the "PBEWithSHA1AndDES" cipher. However, Now we are porting to pure SunJCE. When I print the provider capabilities, The best I could get was "PBEWithMD5AndDES". Is it somehow possible to do PBE using SHA1 in SunJCE? I really dont want to use MD5 because it is less secure than SHA1.
This is one of the alternatives i thought of :-
1) Write my own PKCS 5 Key generator(That uses SHA1 Message Digest)
2) Use the resultant key with the simple DES Cipher, which I retrive using
Cipher.getInstance("DES").
Is there any other alternative which will save me the trouble?
Thanks in advanceThe hash (MD5 or SHA1) is only used in the generation of the DES key from the password and using MD5 will make little difference to the security of your system since the entropy of the DES key generation will probably be dominated by the password used.
The generation of the DES key from password using SHA1 is not a trivial process and I will guarantee that, unless you follow the formal specification exactly, you will create a key that is less secure than using the built in MD5 version.
Unless you are creating compatibility with an existing system (which does not seem likely from your posting) then you should not really use DES at all. The latest algorithm is AES but I don't think there is a PBE using AES in the SunJCE. You can use PBEWithSHA1AndDESede - PBE with Triple DES which is nearly as secure as AES but slower than AES.
Also, why do you need to use PBE? For various reasons I avoid this if at all possible.

Get error while Integrating with Oracle's Enterprise User Security
Hi,
I am trying to create an Oracle Enterprise User integrating with OVD and MS Active Directory.
I am following all the steps in Integrating with Oracle's Enterprise User Security.
In the documentation section: "Configuring Oracle Virtual Directory for the Integration"
I have applied the steps successfully until:
Update and load the entries into the Local Store Adapters by performing the following steps:
I have successfully extended the Oracle Virtual Directory schema with the loadOVD.ldif
However I am getting errors in the next step: Update realmRoot.ldif to use your namespaces
The next step states the following:
Update realmRoot.ldif to use your namespaces, including the dn, dc, o, orclsubscriberfullname,
and memberurl attributes in the file. If you have a DN mapping between Active Directory and
Oracle Virtual Directory, use the DN that you see from Oracle Virtual Directory.
The realmRoot.ldif file is located in ORACLE_VIRTUAL_DIRECTORY_HOME/eus,
where ORACLE_VIRTUAL_DIRECTORY_HOME represents the location where Oracle Virtual Directory is installed.
The realmRoot.ldif file contains core entries in the directory namespace that Enterprise User Security queries. The realmRoot.ldif file also contains the dynamic group that contains the registered Enterprise User Security databases to allow secured access to sensitive Enterprise User Security related attributes, like the user's Enterprise User Security hashed password attribute.
Load your domain root information in the realmRoot.ldif file into Oracle Virtual Directory using the following command:
ldapmodify -h Oracle_Virtual_Directory_Host –p OVD_Port -D cn=admin -w Admin_Password -v -a –f realmRoot.ldif
When I run the ldapmodify command I get the following error:
add dc:
testldap
add objectclass:
top
domain
domainDNS
adding new entry DC=testldap,DC=local
ldap_add: Operations error
ldap_add: additional info: LDAP Error 1 : null
The actual realmRoot.ldif looks like this:
# Please uncomment the following one line if you are importing this
# LDIF file via OVD Manager or OVD Server's ldapmodify tool.
#version: 1
#dn: dc=com
#dc: com
#objectclass: domain
dn: DC=testldap,DC=local
changetype: add
dc: testldap
#o: subarashii
objectclass: top
objectclass: domain
objectclass: domainDNS
#objectclass: orclSubscriber
#orclsubscriberfullname: subarashii
#orclVersion: 90400
# If your domain structure has more layers than dc=subarashii,dc=com,
# for example, it's dc=us,dc=subarashii,dc=com, you will need to load
# the following ldif entry/entries too.
# Uncomment out the following, if required.
#dn: dc=us,dc=subarashii,dc=com
#orclversion: 90400
#orclsubscriberfullname: us
#objectclass: domain
#objectclass: top
#objectclass: orclSubscriber
#dc: us
# Adding EUSDBGroup entry
# Modify the memberurl attribute and replace it with your own domain name
#dn: cn=EUSDBGROUP,dc=subarashii,dc=com
#cn: EUSDBGROUP
#memberurl:ldap:///dc=subarashii,dc=com??sub?(&(objectclass=orclService)(objectclass=orclDBServer))
#objectclass:groupofuniquenames
#objectclass:groupofurls
#objectclass:topDid you ever get your questions answered about the realmRoot.ldif file? Did you manage to configure a successful integration of OVD with EUS? I am battling with trying to get Oracle Virtual Directory integrated with Enterprise User Security, but every step I take in Chapter 7 of the OVD manual fails in some way, and the instructions are often vague. I am not sure how to modify the realmRoot.ldif file. Is there any improved documentation on this? I have logged a Service Request, but not getting any help. Any resources or documentation you know of that provides better guidance would be much appreciated. I am way behind my schedule now and this is a very frustrating exercise.
Thanks. -
Outlook Notes 2003 in XP not syncing with iPhone 4 - One Solution
Hi I upgraded from Nokia to iPhone4 last Friday and spent all Saturday and Sunday morning struggling to get my important Outlook Notes to sync with the iPhone. Contacts,Calendar, E-mail Accs + Bookmarks all synced properly but not the Notes. I had used scanpst.exe to check my .pst file and removed blank Notes etc and many other things that have been mentioned on this Forum and elsewhere, but all failed. On Sunday pm I phoned Apple and a very helpful Rory spent almost 2 hours going through everything, including my uploading 3 data files, for later investigation but all failed.
However one item of success was when I created a new User Account, and starting Outlook from scratch did manage to sync sample Notes OK. I then carried on by myself and copied my .pst file to this new user account, but again it failed.
I then reckoned that the problem was with the .pst file and not Apple software, so I investigated the .pst file further. I, and many of the other users who have had a problem with Outlook Notes, may have been using Outlook for a long time. Myself from 1999 and I have annual archives of my .pst files for each year as I archive all the data annually, and carry on with the same .pst file.
When I checked it's properties I found my .pst file was in 1997-2002 Format, so as Apple says they only support from XP 2003 and a new file did work I then made myself a new .pst file and copied all the data to it. Calendar was the most difficult, but that was solved by Outlook forums and the end result was that the Notes and everything else then synced properly.
When I returned to my Office on Monday - I use Outlook 2007 there - and I repeated the procedure on my Office .pst, which is different, but I sync Notes, in 2007 I had to delete my mail profile first as my new.pst file was originally created in the 1997-2002 format, but with a new Mail profile it all worked properly.
This solution worked for me and maybe the reason many other avid Outlook Note users may have had issues....

Mail app 4.5 can't be used with 10.6.8 after security update?
I just performed a security update based on an automatic notice to my Mac. It has made the mail app unaccesible running OSX 10.6.8. Is there a solution or work around here? I don't think I'm the only one who has made this update and is running the Apple Mail.app.

Fellow user Grant Bennet-Alder offers this solution:
Some users have reported this problem if the Mail Application has been moved out of the top-level /Applications folder, or duplicated in another location.
When the Security Update is done, the old version of Mail is disabled.
The solution has been to:
1) make certain Mail is in the /Applications folder
2) There is no other copy anywhere else.
3) Once steps 1 and 2 have been done, Manually download and re-apply the Security Update (2012-004) by hand.
Security Update 2012-004 (Snow Leopard)
If the Mail.app has been LOST, it can be re-installed by applying the 10.6.8 version 1.1 combo update. But this update is quite large and it is usually not necessary:

I have a slide show (project) that will not export. The error triangle appears with the message: "This movie contains an invalid data reference" What is the issue, and what is the solution?
jhI found that the issue was with the title side, it had too many characters in the slide. When the number of characters was diminished, the show loaded without issue.
