PC and Mac user...what to do?

I just got an Ipod Nano and my main computer now is a Mac where I have all my Itunes music. However, I will be switching over to a PC shortly and will be using that to sync my Ipod moving forward.
The question is...how can I get all the music that is currently on my Mac over to the Itunes on my PC? I can't use the Ipod b/c I would have to "restore" it and thus lose all my music. Is there an external drive that I could use or some other way?

Yes. You should simply be able to insert the disc that contains your iTunes library from your Mac, and import it into your iTunes library on your PC.
Secondly, how many songs would fit on a CD?
I'm not sure about a CD (it would hold less), but usually one DVD disc has a 4.7 GB capacity.
That's approximately 1150 songs from your library that you could burn per 4.7 GB DVD disc. (with the tech specs of 128 kbps, AAC encoding, and about 4 minutes long for each song.)

How to export for both windows and mac users

I'm new to the video stuff, so i have a few questions. i am planning to post videos on my blog. I want to have them in a format that both windows and mac users can play. is this a possibility or will i have to export .wmv for windows and quicktime for mac? i realize that windows users can download quicktime, but i either want the video to be viewable in a format that can be read by all without having to download anything (might be too big a wish :o) ). if i can't do that, then i'd like to have 2 links - one for quicktime and one to the .wmv. in this case, how to i export a .wmv file? i don't see that option anywhere on the share menu? do i need to buy quicktime pro? that leads me to another questions - if i have imovie, do i need quicktime pro? so far i'm having a hard time figuring out what quicktime pro has that imovie doesn't....thanks in advance!

Posting to YouTube and providing a URL link might be the most universal method of playback although quality may be on the weak side.

WMV is a proprietary compression format. You will either have to purchase the authorized QT components from Flip4Mac or purchase a separate open source converter application like Visual Hub.

Any you won't even if you purchase and install the QT component -- iMovie '08 only exports to QT compression formats.

It wouldn't help. Getting QT Pro only unlocks editing and conversion features. It does not add any additional codecs which don't already have installed.

As indicated above, QT Pro allows you to convert to/from any compression formats for which you have working import/export QT components. This can already be be done using GarageBand and iMovie. GarageBand allows you to access any installed QT import/export component while iMovie '08 restricts you to Apple QT components. In addition, QT Pro allows you to create player displays with multiple audio/video tracks, gives you ability to layer graphic elements (e.g, create watermarks, create pictures-within-pictures, etc,), allow the viewer to switch between alternate audio and/or video tracks, and may other things.

Using Shared Review via Network Folder on Windows server and PC and Mac users commenting

We are having initiation and connection problems on the Macs (running OS 10.6.4 Snow Leopard) with Shared Reviews (from Acrobat 9) that are stored on a Windows 2008 Server connecting via SMB. I would be very interested to hear from anyone who is successfully:
1) Initiating Shared Reviews from a Macintosh via "Automatically collect comments on my own internal server" and navigating to a folder (with full read/write permissions for all) on a Windows server. We cannot get Acrobat (via the automated SR set-up wizard) to verify the network folder location on the Macs so that a Mac user can initiate a Shared Review. On Windows (using Parallels or logging in to a PC directly), the same users have no problem initiating and accessing Shared Reviews.
2) Accessing Shared Reviews on a network folder (set up on a Windows 2008 server) via a Mac running OSX 10.6.4 and Acrobat 9. All users have read/write access to the folder and can navigate to it via the server. They can save documents to the network folder and open other documents there as well. When they open a Shared Review-enabled PDF for commenting, they get the error message that Acrobat cannot connect to the server. Retry results in the same error message.
We use Shared Reviews extensively and have no problems with PC users accessing the files and Mac users accessing them via Windows (Parallels or on a PC). This is very frustrating so I would really appreciate any ideas, especially if anyone is actually doing Shared Reviews this way.

Unfortunately, this is NOT fixed based on the testing I have done.
1) I am still unable to connect to the network folder on a Windows server from the Mac to initiate a Shared Review In Acrobat version 9.4.6. Same error message as previous Unable to locate server. See screenshot:
2) One of the Mac users (also upgraded to Acrobat 9.4.6) who was invited to participate in a Shared Review (initiated using Parallels/Windows) was initially able to open the file and Publish comments. However, after she did and closed the file, she was unable to reopen the same file, connect to the server and add comments. And no other Mac user could access the file after she added her first comments. We all got the error message "Unable to connect etc" See screenshot.
3) I opened the same file in Parallels/Windows with no problem. However, the Mac user's comments were not there. I could add comments and publish in Windows.
4) When I tried to access the Tracker from my Mac (review was initiated via Parallels), I got the error message File not Found when I tried to access the test review via my Mac (see screenshot).
Could you give me more information about the fix? I would also be happy to talk to you or send more details if that would help.
Our set up has not changed from the original information I sent (there may have been some Mac updates -- we are all on OS 10.6.8 but still Snow Leopard). Server has not changed.

Can aim users and .mac users video/audio chat with each other?

today was a crazy day with ichat. two of my friends were able to video chat 1 on 1. my mac is qualified to handle 3-way or 4-way chats. when they invite me, the bubble pops up. i hit accept and the loading spindle keeps on spinning for minutes until it just denies me entrance. they get an error saying i never accepted, so as soon as they invite me, they don't get any other response back.
could it be that i am on the AIM network and both of them are on the .mac network?
iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.9) 1.8ghz, 1.5gig ram, 3rd party camcorder, latest iChat. router installed.

Yes. Apple does not have its own publicly available IM service; iChat uses the AIM network, and there are few functional differences between AIM and .Mac screen names. If they are using a client other than iChat, there may be interoperability issues with audio and video chats, or the other client may not support those types of chatting.

Hi all, we are switching to Mac after being hardcore PC users for YEARS!! At this point, all of our documents are in MS Office programs. What software do I need to be able to transfer all the docs to our new Mac and then read docs from other PC users? The new Mac we are purchasing is OS-X, but in reading through the software that comes with it, I can't tell if what we will need is included. Thanks for any advice!

As an option, you might consider iWork. That is the Apple product - less expensive than Office and seamlessly compatible with Office documents (at least with Word).
As a gratuitous suggestion, you do NOT need A/V software. There are NO viruses that affect a Mac running OS X - NONE. You also do not need to perform basic system maintenance. OS X, for example, "defrags" files of less than 20 MB on the fly.

Teaching RAW to PC and Mac users of Elements

Dear friends,
My problem arises from the fact that I am teaching Photoshop Elements to students, some of whom are on the Mac platform and others are using PC's with windows (XP and Vista)
I access RAW from Bridge. How do Windows users access RAW and how do they set up RAW to deal with jpegs.
On my Mac, that preference is available from Bridge. Is it possible to explain to me how to do this from a Windows oeprating system?
I am not taking limited class time to teach Bridge or Organizer. We are working on adjdusting images (jpegs) from the Editor.
When I open a RAW file in Version 6 (Mac) it automatically opens the Elements version of Bridge. However, I can't get Elements version of Bridge to open as a browser because my laptop also has CS3 installed and Elements defaults to using this more advanced version of Bridge. This doesn't help me teach students who only have the version of Bridge that ships with Elements version 6 for Mac.

Barbara, if I continue to do this, I will first need to update my laptop. I still am using a G4 iBook. Then I could install windows. As it is, most of my instruction is on Elements for Beginners and for them, I don't even get beyond mentioning RAW.
I use an iMac at home but got a small laptop when the purpose was to take it traveling with me.

Video conferencing with more than 2 people and with PC and mac users

I want to do a video conference with up to 4 people at a time. I have a mac - MBA Rev C (OS is 10.56). I just started up iChat today for the first time and am using my AIM ID on it as I don't have a .mac account.
The problem is I want to chat with other people in a group conference but I think the other people all have PCs and are using Windows XP. Getting AIM is not a problem for these people and they all have webcams.
I just don't know whether it's possible for us to have a video conference with the four of us all viewing the three videos simultaneously on the one screen.
Will I be able to see and hear the three other people? Will they be able to see the three others?
Will I be able to see the three others at the same time but they won't be able to see anyone, or only one person, me?
How does this work? I've read a lot of sites about this but none mention whether this is possible or not. I know it's possible to have a video conference between 2 people using a mac and a PC but I want to know about a mac and 3 pc situation.

Attention All Metric Halo and ChannelStrip Users - What's happening?

About 2 months ago I posted that ChannelStrip for GarageBand was an amazing addition to the capabilities of GarageBand ...
I had tried the demo and was very impressed ....
Well ... just last week I went online and bought ChannelStrip for GarageBand...
but since then something very weird with Metric Halo is going on ..
I paid my $89 for ChannelStrip ... and I haven't heard a word from them since.
No email confirmation .... nothing ...
I sent 2 emails to them asking where my purchase was over their web support page ... no response ...
Try calling their support line ...http://www.mhlabs.com/metric_halo/support/.. all you get is a bunch of extensions and weird operator voice mail ... I left various voice mails ... and again ... no response ...
I'm starting to think that this company has gone under ... but they are still receiving money over the internet for nonexistent services ...
Has anyone heard anything about Metric Halo ????

I just got an email a couple of days ago and last week received email support within a day. I also use ChannelStrip.
I also called the same support number and got through on the first ring two weeks ago.
The phone line message is normal, as long as I've been a customer.
But I would say your experience of support isn't normal. They have always been known for their quality support.
In fact when I was looking for my ULN-2, they went out of their way to get one to me quickly.

I've dealt with Jason Desmond and Jon Stern at MH support. And like I said, they have always been great to deal with and seem to go out of their way to assist. Not to mention how great their products are.

Windows and Mac User Home Directories

I would like to locate my user home directories in a seperate location than my system drive. Currently the home directories default to the Users sharpoint on my system hard drive. I have yet to find an option that allows me to redirect this. Thank you in advance for your help.

1. Create the folder that will store your home directories, wherever you want to put it.
2. Share the folder in Workgroup Manager.
3. Make sure you create a network mount record for the share (Network Mount tab in Workgroup Manager).
4. Select a user or users, click the Homes tab, and select the share point you just created.

Pocket Mac and Mac users with 10.4!!

I just got my Blackberry and was excited to see a new Mac sync program for yesterday, so I waited to download it. Didn't know my not so old laptop would be so outdated ALREADY that this program would not apply for me. And now, the Pocket mac software is no where in site, and I'm desperate to sync up my calendar and music to my new Blackberry.
Please, please, please do either one of two things:
1) make the new software compatible with Mac OS X 10.4.1
2) or make the pocket mac software available!!!
This is ridiculous!

Want to partition a new External Hard drive for both pc and mac

Hello!
I am going to partition a new Seagate external hard drive for both my pc and mac. What format do I choose for the PC partition? MS-DOS (FAT), ExFAT, or Free Space.

If I may suggest:
Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
7. After formatting has completed select the main entry for the new drive (mfgr.'s ID) then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Click on the large partition rectangle then click on the Add [+] button. The partition should divide into two equal volumes. Resize as you prefer. Select the second or bottom volume to use on the PC. Set the format type to ExFat, then click on the Apply button. Wait for the two volumes to finish mounting on the Desktop.

Mac users having issues with my Site

I just recently had a Mac user complain to me that my website wasn't working for him http://woodsshop.com/index.htm
I'm wondering if the fact I edit my site using CS3 might be his problem?, but that's a wild guess on my part.

" when I enter your web site...under "creative builders" when I click on "kits", "plans" "japanese" "about us" or "contact us" my computer freezes...in other words, it just see there, waiting for the site to come up and it never does. No drop down windows or anything, its just that your site does not move from one area to the next smoothly. Now this is on my 6 month new apple computer....and as I said, everwhere else I go, no problems....."
I contacted my Host, they recommended he clear his cache, didn't help him.
So I went and posted a question on the Mac Safari forum, asking if other Mac users were having issues, some of them are, some not, but enough are, and that has me concerne, how many others can't even access my site?

Alright, this clears the air somewhat.
Do one thing, if you have created the course, you must be aware about the answers, enroll yourself as a user and --
Appear for the course, make sure, you answer all (or enough questions to score 85% marks.) Not just the quiz you have to make sure you view 50% of the slides completely. So that means, if the slide dureact for each slide is say 1minute and there are 40 slides, view a minimum of 20 slides completely to their 1 minute duration.
Only then you would recieve a completed result.
Please try the above scenario and verify you get a completion on your LMS. If you do, then check again your User reports and you will certainly find that your users had failed ne or the other criteria (Slide Views/ Quiz Score)
Alternately, if you want to be linient enough to just mark completetion on Quiz Result, you can uncheck the Slide views option from Success/Completion Criteria, under Reporting.

It is now confirmed that iWeb, and iDVD, has been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. However, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
◼ Password protection
◼ Blog and photo comments
◼ Blog search
◼ Hit counter
◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken. If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows. Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.

However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone. How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
It now appears that the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought.
Personally, if I didn't already have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.
