Yes, but Apple doesn't provide software for doing so; any method or software used needs to be capable of backing up to network drives.

Because my powerbook is not dual core I'm still running 10.5.8. I recently bought a Time Capsule to serve as both my wireless network, and new Time Machine backup drive, among other things.
I'd like to save my backups I've done in the past (currently stored on an iOmega external HD) over to Time Capsule before doing a new backup. I read on a support link on the apple site called Time Machine 101, on how to do this, but the subject heading was "Mac OS X v10.6: How to transfer your back ups from your current hard drive to a new hard drive." So that led me to think maybe I wouldn't be able to do this with 10.5. Does anyone know if I can do what I'm hoping to do?

Oops, sorry, I missed this one.
No, you can back up as many drives/partitions as you want (and have room for), as long as they're internal or externally-connected via FireWire or USB, and are formatted properly.
When you first connect such a drive after setting-up TM, it will usually put it into the +Do Not Back Up+ box in TM Preferences > Options automatically. To back it up, just select it there and click the minus sign at the bottom. If it's shown in gray, you can't remove it. That means it's either your TM backup drive/partition, or isn't formatted for a Mac.
I'll be using the backup HDs for either storage of my music library or photo library, and for being the storage device for some FLAC files I'll be downloading/sharing. (Dave Matthews Band geek here.) The FLACs I wouldn't need to backup, but the music/photos I'd want to.
Do you mean the current backup HD, that will no longer be used for TM? If so, yes, that'll work fine.
If you're going to be using the Time Capsule's internal HD for other data, besides Time Machine backups though, you'll eventually have a problem, as Time Machine, by design, will fill up all the space available to it. There is a sort of a workaround, in the blue box in #3 of the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum, but a better solution would be to attach a USB drive to the TC. Use one for backups, the other as you want. In that configuration, however, Time Machine cannot back it up, so you'll need to make other arrangements. -
Transfer exisitng TM backup to new Time Capsule
I finally laid down the cash for a 1TB TC. I have a new Mac that has started backups to the TC, and would like to transfer my existing backups for other computers, scattered on external firewire drives to the TC.
Can this be done by just copying the "Computer name" folder/directory from each "Backups.backupdb" folder on the firewire drives to the "Backups.backupdb" folder on the TC?

Yes. They are stored differently, and although most of the contents are usually displayed like normal files and folders, they aren't. They're "multi-links," sort of like extra-fancy aliases.
If you try to copy them via the Finder, you won't take this "structure" along, and TM won't recognize them, much less be able to link future backups to them. The next backup you do will be a full one, to the Sparse Bundle.
TM won't recognize them, and they'll just take up space. -

You are not thinking of deleting the photos and files on your Mac, are you? If you do this, you will have no backups for those files.
Another concern is that Time Machine backs up the changes on your Mac. At some point, Time Machine will automatically delete the photos and files from the Time Capsule.....you just don't know when this might occur.
In other words, only delete files from your Mac that you can afford to lose. -
i am setting u a new time capsule. i already have a wifi setup in my office. now i want to use this time capsule just as a wireless backup machine. do i still need to attached a DSL cable, or it can connect to my existing wifi and start working ?
You probably can, but this type of configuration is not recommended or supported by Apple.
Two cautions if you want to try this:
1) The Time Capsule has to be configured to "Join" your existing wireless network in this type of setup...and to do that, you must know the exact type of wireless security that your network is using.
2) Backups are likely going to take twice as long. The wireless signal must travel from your computer to the wireless router and then from the wireless router back to the Time Capsule. Two "hops"......even if the computer is located close to the Time Capsule.
If you want to try this, we can tell you how....but with no guarantees on your results....since this is not officially supported. -
I just set up a new time capsule. it worked fine on my first macbook. But now I cannot backup my second macbook. Getting "Time Machine Error" "The backup disk image could not be created." Do I need to change settings on my time capsule to allow the second computer, or do I need to change something on the computer to allow time machine to work right?

Trying to restore after getting a new hard drive. I can see the backup on the Time Capsule and on the correct date but it is Greyed out. That is it wont let me open it and restore the machine. Have tried also Migration Assistant, no luck.

At startup hold down the Command+Option/Alt+r keys until you see a globe on the screen. Then use disk utility to partition and format the drive HSF+ and then select Reinstall Mac OS X. whatever version of OS X that originally came on your system will be installed and then you can upgrade back to Mavericks. -
How do i move a backup from one time capsule to a new one?
I recently purchased a 2TB Airport Time Capsule (tall style) to replace my 1TB Airport Time Capsule (flat style). I have a macbook air (that doesn't have ethernet) and am struggling to find a way to move the data from my old time capsule to my new one. I attempted to follow the instructions here How to migrate Time Machine backups from one AirPort Time Capsule to another but am not having success because of the lack of an ethernet port on my macbook air. I find it hard to believe that Apple has not developed a better migration path for customers who have purchased new time capsules. Most of the guidance and recommendations i find state that you should "just start over" with new backups. I find that advice to be counter to the purpose of solutions like time capsules. Why would a customer buy backup systems just to throw away their data when they upgrade? Help! I'm hoping there is a better way that I just haven't found.
I have not tried this, but you might want to take a look at an Apple USB to Ethernet adapter. That should give you the Ethernet to Ethernet connection that you need.

New Time Capsule: Assign DHCP address and backup to USB disk?

I am setting up a new Time Capsule and have two questions:
- I am successfully backing up my MacBook Pro to the internal TC disk. I like loooong backup histories, so I would like to backup my iMac to a separate Time Machine disk attached to the TC via USB. I have googled and not found anyone saying it can be done. I have attached a USB disk and tried to configure TimeMachine to see it, but it is invisible. Is this even possible?
- I want to assign a specific IP address to a Linux server (Ubuntu Jaunty) on the internal network of the Time Capsule. I can get a "random" DHCP address assigned, but I cannot get a specific one assigned. I have tried to create DHCP Reservations for the Linux box using both its MAC address as well as the DHCP client ID (preferred). No matter what, I still get the random DHCP address. On the linux box, I have made sure to set the Client ID as well as removing the old leases file. Any hints?

That is not possible with Time Machine.
Time Machine will backup any files residing on your Mac or residing on any disk connected via USB or FireWire directly to your Mac.
Time Machine will NOT backup files residing on a network drive like the USB drive connected to a Time Capsule.

The default settings of the Time Capsule use the addresses 10.0.1.2 to 10.0.1.200 for DHCP clients. If you want this server to have a fixed IP address, simply configure the server to have a manual IP address in the range 10.0.1.201 to 10.0.1.254. -
I recently bought a new Time Capsule and the following message has started to show:-
"Time Machine could not complete the back up. The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/Brian’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use."

Backing up or restoring Time Machine backups remotely (that is, via Back to My Mac and the Internet instead of your local network) is not recommended. If you want to back up or restore with Time Machine and AirPort Time Capsule, you should do so while directly connected to your AirPort Time Capsule's local network.
I think Apple have good reason to recommend you don't do it.. eg.. you can easily corrupt the entire backup. So instead of having an up to date backup you will have none.
Use a 2.5" portable drive when travelling. When you get home.. backup to the TC as usual. -

You need to point out at which point you are failing.
You do need the two TC plugged into each other by ethernet.. do not even dream of doing this over wireless. So a computer is plugged into the primary TC as well.. the secondary TC is in bridge mode.. you then simply copy and paste the sparsebundle from one TC to the next.
IMHO this is not a good idea.. you are much better starting a new set of TM backups on the new TC.. keep the old TC for a few weeks to make sure there is nothing you need to recover then wipe it.
There are also instructions in pondini if you insist on doing it.

Assuming you are using Lion.. download the airport utility that has some utility.

Then manual setup, internet tab, connection sharing.. off bridge mode.
Then plug the TC into the Bbox and just use it as wireless target for your air.
You can use wireless on Bbox if that works as well, and you might need to juggle wireless channels to get everything working. Having both set to auto is not a good idea.. set and lock channels on one or the other but best is both.. On the TC go to the airport wireless page. change it to manual.. lock the channel. You can use 1, 6, 11 or 13 in ETSI.. -
New Time Capsule will not back up my 2009 MacBook Pro. I can see and find my last back before Mavericks but cannot backup. The TC will not allow me to delete or start a new backup disk. My 2024 MacBook Air did the same yesterday but today it backs up.
Seems to be working now. I left the MacBook on all morning trying to back up and now works.
