PC Can't open a DVD/CD made on my Mac

I made a CD and a DVD of jpeg photos on my mac. I did not do it from iPhoto. I did it with disk utility after making a disk image from a folder. I then gave it to my daughter who runs windows XP on her laptop. She is not able to open either disk. I can't help her because PC's make me nuts!
Is there a way to open them?
Is there something that I did or something or that I can do (formating?) so that she can open them if I make another set of disks?

If you made a disc image from a folder and burnt it, you most likely made Mac formated disc (either Extended or Standard) which wouldn't be able to be read on a PC. Now I haven't used iPhoto to burn discs, so I don't know if it can do hybrid discs (Mac & PC), but you can try this...
If you go to the File menu (when in Finder), select "New Burn Folder". Drag your photos into the newly created "Burn Folder". Don't worry that the files look like aliases (they are just placeholders, the actual files will be written to disc). When you are done loading the folder (and don't forget to rename the folder to what you want the disc to be named), burn the disc by either clicking the "Burn" button in the open "Burn Folder" window, or selecting "Burn 'Folder Name' to Disc..." via the Finder's "File" menu. Insert blank disc, and away you go. According to the dialog, a Burn Folder burn "should" be readable on both Mac and Windows.
Or...
Open Disk Utility... click New Image... then select Image Format>MS-DOS (FAT)... then select a size that can accommodate all the photos... name the image, then create it.
When the image mounts on your desktop, drag your photos into it (like a virtual HD), then unmount it. When you are done, burn it to disc with Disk Utility.
Now since this is in MS-DOS format, you may need to rename the files in the old 8+3 format (XXNAMEXX.EXT), or the files maybe truncated when viewed on a PC.
Hopefully one of these methods will work for you. It's been awhile since I've done either of these, as I use Toast for my burning needs. However, you should be go to go.

  • I can't open the DVD tray

    I can't open the DVD tray. There's nothing inside. I hear a sound (a grrrr) but it won't open.
    I had that 2-3 times in the last 5 years and I always managed to open it by pushing the "DVD ROM drive open button" while I restart but not this time.
    I also tried to put a paper clip in the little hole but that doesn't work either.
    In the Apple help site, they say push the "eject media key" on your keyboard; I didn't know where that is but I know now it's the F12 key; when I push it I hear a sound coming from the tray (like a electric screwdriver) but nothing happens.
    So what can I do ?
    I saw that Andrew Favret had the same problem in October and Don Archibald said:
    • Boot or restart the machine, immediately press the Option key, keep it held down. This will bring up Startup Manager. Once Startup Manager has finished loading, press the key combo Command-. (Command-Periodkey). This should open the tray.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I tried the "Option" key. The Start Up Manager appeared: A display with my 5 drives in the middle, and a Right Arrow icon on the right.
    I did click on the right arrow and it started to load normally as it does when you turn the computer on.
    So I try the whole thing again and now instead of clicking on the right arrow, I tried the command and period key. I hear again, a sound coming from the tray and I see the icon for "eject" on the screen but nothing happens. Tried 5-6 times. And the F12 key don't have any effect at this time.
    If I had a disc in the tray, I'm sure the icons for the DVD drive will appear but the tray is empty.
    Not sure if there's a relation but I just upgraded that same day to a new version of iTunes (from version 7 to 8.0.2) and 3 other upgrades: QuickTime player (from 7.1.3 to 7.5.5) Plus Java and Security something.
    Usually there is a CD/DVD in the tray that won't eject, but you say the tray is empty. Are there any other users of you Mac, especially kids? Someone may have placed something in the tray that is causing the jam.
    Here's the usual fixes.
    First try a Restart while holding down the mouse button.
    If that doesn’t work, look at these links:
    How can I open old Freehand files on this new Mac?
    Can I still open and work in Freehand on this new Mac?
    Let me see if I've gotten this right! You want to remove an account from BOTH machines? Do this for your new machine first, then for the other.
    Click the Apple logo on the top left of the screen, System Preferences, Users and Groups (under Systems), unlock the lock in the window if its locked (you need to know the password), select the user that you wish to remove, and click the - sign next to the + sign for Login options. A window will pop up with some options. Select Delete this user and securely, and click 'Delete user'.
    After this, do an update from the App Store.
    Thats all there is to it.
    For the other machine repeat the process except for one thing. Before you delete the user in this case YOU, you will have to give Administrator priviledges to your son bu checking the box 'Allow user to administer this computer'.
    Do NOT do anything from Finder ... if you dont know how to fix the consequences of the problems caused.
    There is no need to unauthorize your iTunes account on your new machine. Do it on the old machine though.
  • How can I open a System 7 CD on my Mac 10.6.8?
    How can I open a system 7 CD on my Mac 10.6.8?
    System 7 never came on a CD.  It might have come on a floppy.   Do you mean System 7.6 or 7.5 CD?   There is no way legally to do so on a 10.6 running computer. You need a Mac from 1995 or 1996 or 1997 that supported that disc.    System 7 history is here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_7
    Note, if no Mac model is stated on the CD, it will run on the older Macs assuming the right amount of RAM is installed, and the CPU supported by that system.   A Mac normally will not run an older Mac OS than it shipped with.  And Mac model specific CDs will only run on that age of that model that CD shipped with.
  • How can I open Internet explorer only pages on a mac? The website that I need to access only permits internet explorer
    How can I open Internet explorer 'only' pages on a mac, without creating a drive partition and installing windows separately?
    I've tried winbottler, but it doesn't seem to serve my purpose. The web site that I'm trying to access only permits Internet explorer.
    Microsoft has not written IE for Mac for years so unless you want to create a parition and install Windows, or user a Windows emulator, you're out of luck for installing IE on a Mac.
    The web site that I'm trying to access
    There might be a work around for you since it's just the one site.
    Go to the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Advanced tab.
    Enable the Develop menu.
    Now click Develop from the Safari menu bar then click User Agent > IE 9, 8, or 7
    What version of Pages do you have? Pages 5.2 can not open Pages '08 documents.
    Can you reinstall iWork '09 from the original Installer or DVD?:
  • I can not open my documents I made last week - I get a message that I need to upgrade and I have the latest download?!
    pages is not letting me open my documents I made last week. I get a message that I need to update my software. I am up to date.
    What to do?
    It sounds like you have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
    Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
    Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
    You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
    Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
    Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
    Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
    Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
    All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
    Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
    Note: Apple has removed over 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:
    http://www.freeforum101.com/iworktipsntrick/viewforum.php?f=22&sid=3527487677f0c 6fa05b6297cd00f8eb9&mforum=iworktipsntrick
    Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.
  • Can´t open some DVD´s in DVD player since I´ve got Lion-there was never such problem under snow Leopard
    Can´t play some DVD´s in Apples DVD player, that run well onmy machine(s) before i`ve installed lion. Even if I say in system Preference "when inserting DVD-start DVD player, it starts, but can´t even select the DVD´s. They appear in finder, I can playém e.g. with VLC, but DVD player says "no DVD available"
    ( My OS is upgraded to 10.7.1)
    Can anyone fix it?
    In my special case, it seems to be a slowly dying superdrive. Yesterday I´ve got a brand new DVD,which was not readable in my Imac. After some retries the drive simply ejected the disk.
    `Cause I do not own a DVD-Player I went to a neighbour, where the dvd played fine. Now I realised after som tries, that my mac does not recognize any of my double density dvd´s. Single density works.
    I think I will return my mac to the shop to get a new drive.
    I created a Flash Animation for a school project in Adobe Flash CS6 at home, and at school which uses Adobe Flash CS5, I can't open the flash file.  Is there anyway I can make this happen, because until then I can't work on my project.
    Flash Pro CS6 supports saving as a Flash CS5.5 or Flash CS5 documents(fla and XFLs).
    You can save this to either of these formats using the File->Save As option
  • Can I open an iTunes library running on a mac from a PC over the network?
    I've got an iMac running iTunes with my main library on it and a Vista laptop on the same network, running the latest version of iTunes, with a blank library. Can I open the library on the iMac and use it on the Vista laptop without screwing it up on the iMac?
    I don't want to change, remove, or add anything from the Vista laptop, just use the library. I know I can share the library out from the iMac and that works fine, but I'm running Vista Media Center and want to access my iTunes library from Windows Media Center. There are plug-ins for Windows Media Center that make this happen but they have to be running on a PC with iTunes running.
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks
    Assuming you have AVG then yes, a second patch has apparently been released to day which may resolve the issue. See this post for general advice.
    If you don't see the .itl file extension then don't add it to the filename of the renamed file.
    iTunes Library 2012-09-22.itl > iTunes Library.itl
    iTunes Library 2012-09-22 > iTunes Library
    My advice has generally been aimed at Windows users, but if you have AVG on a Mac and that too suffers from this issue then it is worth nothing that at one point the iTunes Library on a Mac was stored without any extension. If you match the name of the empty library file you are replacing it should work.
