PC cannot see wireless Airport Express using Ethernet on D-LINK DIR-655 Router

This seems to be a recurring issue going way back, but I have yet to see a real solution posted.
I am using my Airport Express (APX) to stream music from the computers on my network to my stereo via Airplay.  I have APX set up to wirelessly join my existing wireless network, which uses a D-Link DIR-655 router hooked to a Time Warner cable modem.  I can succesfully connect all of my wireless devices via Airplay, through iTunes to my APX, including two laptops and an iPhone.  However, my primary desktop PC, which does not have a wireless card is linked directly via ethernet cable to my D-Link router, and it is not able to see my APX.  I can, however, see the Airport Express from my PC through my Airport Utility by directly typing in the IP address.  Note that the  APX set-up option to allow Ethernet clients is checked.  I also noticed that my laptops will stop detecting the APX if I directly connect them to my D-Link router via Ethernet and turn off their wireless cards.  They will resume detecting APX when I turn their wireless connections back on.  So, bottom line, I am convinced that this is not a firewall problem.  Although I have tried every conceivable setting of my D-Link router and APX, I am convinced it is either a wireless to ethernet communication issue, or some obscure setting on APX.. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Wayne

I think I found the fix based on reading some Apple TV forums where several people were having the same problem.  Under Advanced Network settings in the D-Link setup, I just checked "Enable Multicast Streams" and that seemed to do the trick.

  • Wireless connection to D-Link DIR-655 router

I just got a MBP and I can't connect wirelessly to my D-link router (WPA password protected; wired connection works great). Aiport sees the router, asks for the password which I enter, and then I get the message "the selected network uses and Access Control List.. and this computer is not on the list." I've tried to add the MBP to my network using the Network Magic process for adding new devices (which worked just fine to wirelessly connect my PC laptop from work), but it can't seem to find the MBP. I tried the steps suggested by iVmichael to someone having a similar problem April 5-6, and also tried disabling my network lock, but so far haven't found the magic combination. Suggestions?

MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I had a similar problem and I needed a second computer (B) using a wired connection to the router to allow the other one (A) in. This is what I did:
    1. Using the wired computer (B) I opened up the network so any computer could join the network wirelessly.
    2. I joined the network with (A) wirelessly.
    3. Once I had successfully joined the network with (A) I used the wired computer (B) to do a search for new computers so (A) could be registered in the Access Control List.
    4. Using (B) I closed the network again.
    5. Now I could join the network with (A) wirelessly without any trouble.

  • Cannot see my Airport Express

I have two AirportExpress and one TimeCapsule. I can see all three using a PC AirPort Utility. However, from a MAC AirPort Utility I can see only one at the time (I can see only the one I am connected to wirelessly). All three devices are connected to the same ethernet network with cables. How do I get the MAC to see all three device simultaneously?

I just did. Now I cannot neither the AirPort Express nor the TimeCapsule that I am connected to. However, I can still see all three devices on the PC.

  • Getting Windows PC to see wireless Airport Express printer in mixed network

I have a wireless network that has been working well. Base station is a SMC wireless router with two Macs connected via Ethernet, a MacBook and a Dell Windows XP joining in wirelessly. No problems. I recently added a Canon Pixma i4200 connected to an Airport Express in client mode. I set up the Airport Express via the MacBook and have no problem printing wireless to the Canon from the MacBook.
The question is how to set up the Dell Windows XP system to see the Canon printer? We tried installing the Canon print driver, but it really wants the printer to be plugged into the PC and won't complete the driver installation. We'll go ahead and plug it in for the setup I guess and then disconnect it. Since I already configured the Airport Express via the MacBook, I didn't want to try to set it up via the Dell PC, but is that likely to help?
This network is such a mixed bag, I think I'm lucky to have everything working as well as it does. Happy to be able to print wirelessly to the new Canon from the MacBook, but my wife wants to be able to print to this printer from her Dell upstairs. The nice feature of the Canon is that it prints duplex.
    thanks for any help

  • Airport Extreme works fine. Cannot see two Airport express units

Hello. I just bought a new Airport Extreme and 2 Airport express units to replace my old linksys routers and to take advantage of my new MacBook Pro and iTV units. I am a Mac newbie after 20 years of PC's. The Netgear DGND3300 DSL modem feeds DSL signal to the Airport Extreme unit and it works well with good internet and signal. I am trying to use the 2 Airport Express units to extend the signal around the house. The Airport Utility has seen both of them but then they disappear and it cant find them again. They are 10 feet away for now until I get them configured. How do I get them to connect and how do I configure them to extend the wifi range?
    Thank you.

The first thing to check is your AirPort Extreme.
Open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab/label below the row of icons
Make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
    Update to save changes
You may have already done this, but it was not mentioned in your post and is a critical step to "extend" the network.
"Hard Reset" each of the AirPort Express devices by holding in the reset button for 10-12 seconds. Then power down one device and configure one at a time.
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab/label below the icons
Enter a name for the device, device password and adjust Time Zone settings
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as the AirPort Extreme wireless network
Check mark next to Allow Wireless Clients
Wireless Security = Same security setting as the AirPort Extreme network
Wireless Password = Same password as the AirPort Extreme network
    Confirm Password
Update to save settings. Close AirPort Utility immediately as soon as you see the message that the settings have been stored. You should have a green light on the Express in 40-45 seconds.
Now, log back on to the wireless network provided by the AirPort Extreme and you should see the AirPort Express that you just configured, if you are using a Mac. The Windows Firewall or anti-virus software may block the connection if you are using a PC. (The AirPort Express "disappears" as soon as you click Update in AirPort Utility because it has joined another network...that's why you don't see it. It uses a "temporary" network with a name like Apple Network xxxxxs during the configuration only).
Configure the second AirPort Express the same as the first. You will probably want to assign a different device name to that Express to keep things straight.
To "extend" effectively, the Express should be located approximately 1/2 the distance between the AirPort Extreme and the area that needs more wireless coverage. Depending on obstructions, you may need to alter this distance a bit.
The "extend" setup works like the hub and spokes of a wheel. The AirPort Extreme is the "hub" and each Express resides at the end of a "spoke". Each Express communicates directly to the "hub", not to another Express at the end of another spoke. For that reason, you cannot "extend" a device that is already configured to "extend".

  • Airport Express (using AirTunes) with D-Link 614+ Router

I have the following issue with my Airport Express not able to stream audio to iTunes. My configuration is an existing D-Link 614+ Wifi Router and I joined the Airport Express to my existing wifi network.
I found a thread that says D-Link routers uses the 192.168... IP range and Airport Express uses the 10.0... IP range. I followed the advice and used the workaround to reset the Airport Express to also an IP in the 192.168 range.
The light turns green on the airport express, but I can't see the remote speaker button on iTunes (version 6.0.1). I am able to go into my router and see that the Airport Express received an IP = 192.168.0.3. But using my iBook and the Airport Utility, I can't see the Airport express, but if I choose "other" and type in the IP address, I am able to open and configure and checked the remote speaker box and name it "Living Room". I open up iTunes, but I still don't see the remote speaker button in the lower right? Does anyone know what might be the problem?
    Thanks,
    David

Too bad... because that would have been an easy solution to the problem if it had been the cause.
It seems you have properly configured your Airport Express as a client on the D-Link router's wireless network - otherwise your Mac would not be able to communicate with it at all. Unfortunately, it seems something is still blocking communication between the Airport Express and your Mac - which explains why (a) the Airport Admin Utility is unable to automatically "see" the location of your Airport Express and (b) iTunes is unable to automatically "see" the location of your Airport Express.
At this point, I cannot see an obvious cause to your problem (other than observing that D-Link router owners seem to be more than their share of obscure configuration issues). Some have commented that a setting on the D-Link router for "long" vs "short" preamble is an issue. I'm not really sure the "subnet switch" workaround described in Ewen's article is really that important, and on that theory you might try doing a hard reset of your Airport Express and following the alternative configuration instructions for the Airport Express as described in this discussion by David Lovell (also works for Macs):

  • Setting up airport express with a d-link dir 655 router on xp

I bought a new router and would like to setup my old AX to use it to stream music. I installed the airport utility which seems to find my device but I can't connect to it - via my router or the airport utility. When I select select manual or continue I get a 60 second or so delay and then it returns to the same screen - "airport utility found an apple wireless device with default settings."
    Wireless Network ebxxxx
    Airport ID: 00:11:xxxxxx
Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? My laptop is plugged into the same router that my AX is. I've tried what I believe to be a soft and hard boot with the AX but so far no luck.
    Thanks
    Chris

AS far as I am aware only the devices listed at the top of this page do UPnP
    http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=1996&question=UPnP
On some, such as the 624 listed here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93333 (See note 2) it actually doesn't work with a Mac properly.
The pics of the Menus on this page http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dlink/DIR-655/iChat.htm suggest it does not have UPnP
The item in the menu "Application Rules" looks like a possible name for Port Triggering (A way of allowing Multiple computers use the same ports)
However it does not seem to be listed in the Port Forward Triggering guide list

  • Itune on iMac cannot connect to Airport Express, but Itune on XP can

    Hello
    I've the following situation:
Itune cannot see the Airport Express unless my Iphone Remote controle is connected to Itune. And eventhough, Itune fails to connect to it.
Here is the environment of my network
    1) third party LAN/Wireless router (connected to the internet)
    2) iMac (10.4.11) connected via the LAN port to the router
    3) Airport Express (7.3.2) connected to the wireless network
    4) one Iphone connected to the wireless network
    5) one XP computer connected to the wireless network
    6) All devices are in the same subnet
What really puzzle me is that Itune on the XP laptop can broadcast music to the Airport Express without any issue. But Itune on the Mac does not see at all the Airport Express unless I connect my Iphone to Itune. When I do so, the Airport Express become listed in the status bar of Itune. But if I try to make Itune connect to it, it try for a while then it stop trying without any error message.
I really don't understand what is going on. Does any body can give my a bit more information how Itune and Airport Express communicate? Or have any idea where I should direct my troubleshooting?
Thanks in advance for any help

So did i screw something up last night when i connected using my PC?
That sounds likely. Maybe the security type or password?
And if so how do i re-set the link with my mac??
Try the options described on pp. 30-33 of http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/AirPort_Express_SetupGuide.pdf
Once you get things working again, suggest you save the settings in a profile. In future when you bring the PC home, create a different profile for experimentation. Switch back to the usual profile when you're done with the PC. Eventually, you should be able to develop one profile that works with both machines.

  • How do I setup Airport express with ethernet connection to my modem?

Hi there - hoping to get some helpg as I'm having challnges setting up my Airport express via ethernet cable connection directly to my router.  It will setup wirelessly no problem, but I occasionally get dropouts when streaming music and I'm hoping to remedy that with a direct cable connection.  I know I have to change some settings in my airport utility, but haven't had any luck getting it right.
Here is my setups if it helps:
Airport express, 1st generation, model A1264
Cisco router (provided by my intenet provider)
    Macbook Air, running 10.8.5
    Airport utility version 6.3.1
    Thanks!
    Phil

Unfortunately, you are getting incorrect advice here. Might be a good idea to start a new post, since the original thread is long out of date.
First, please confirm that you have a compatible Express with the AirPort Extreme. This would be either the current A1392 version.....or the previous A1264 version.
Next, we need to confirm "how' you want to extend, since you do not mention this in your post.
Are you planning to "extend" by connecting the AirPort Express to the AirPort Extreme using a permanent, wired Ethernet connection (highly recommended).....or.....are you trying to "extend" by having the Express try to connect wirelessly to the AirPort Extreme?

  • Is it possible to stream music to an Airport Express using a wired connection?

I have an Airport Express (V7.6.3) hooked up to the music system and have tried everything I can find but get fairly frequent dropouts.  Don't know if it's something the neighbours are running, but have pretty much given up trying to fix it.  I have an ethernet that I can get to the Airport, but I can't find any current answers on hooking it up wired rather than wireless. (All previous hints at it use pretty old version of Airport Utility with options that aren't there in the latest version.)
Simply, what I want to do is connect the Airport Express using ethernet rather than wireless.... possible?
    Thanks

Simply, what I want to do is connect the Airport Express using ethernet rather than wireless.... possible?
Yes of course, this is far preferable than connecting it to your router wirelessly, and doing so is almost guaranteed to fix your AirPlay dropouts.
Start by "hard resetting" your Express. If you connect it to your Extreme and try to reconfigure it without performing a "hard reset" first, the Express may cling to its wireless connection and bridge it back to your wired network, which will appear to crash everything and result in confusion.

  • Itunes can't see my Airport Express speakers after I close my laptop

So this is a weird issue- and I haven't been able to find a prior discussion on this topic. Apologize in advance if I asking something that is already well documented.
but I've seen the problem on two separate laptops now: if I stream my itunes through my airport express speakers and then subsequently close my laptop (presumably putting it into hibernate or some other energy saving mode), itunes cannot see the airport speakers upon reopening the laptop. I have to reset Itunes - and then it will see these speakers every time. Same thing happens when I reset my airport express- sometimes I have to reconfig the router through the airport utility. As soon as a press update and the router resets... then itunes cannot see the airport express speakers.
Not a huge issue- just requires a lot of rebooting to fix. Buts its frustrating.. my macbook speakers are lame. I wish itunes has some sort of speaker refresh button that would reset the speaker settings.
My wife says it is known itunes bug.. anyone know anything on this?
    Thanks in advance everyone!!

    1. Did you try just to switch back to the cpu-speaker and the directly back to the express?
    2. Did you do a firmware update of your express? Just open the express-server-program to do so.

  • Can I add a second Airport Express using an Ethernet cable to extend my network if the first AX is wirelessly connected to an Xtreme?

Hi, I run a small motel and I am trying to extend the wireless network from the office to the rooms in the next building.
I have an AirPort Xtreme connected to my router with an ethernet cable and it works fine.  I have then connected an AirPort Express to this in the next bulding wirelessly (as i cant run an ethernet cable outside) which extends the network over all but the last 2 rooms in the next building.  There are bick walls so it sruggles over the distance.  I realise I cant connect another airport express wirelessly to extend the network further but can I connect another Airport Express using and ethernet cable to the exisiting Aiport Express to extend the network that extra distance?

You can do this, but as you might imagine, that is going to place even more of a load on the weakest link....the wireless "hop"......between your AirPort Extreme and the current AirPort Express.
So, things will slow down even more. Whether or not that will be acceptable to your guests is open to question. Light browsing and email should be OK. Someone trying to download a large file is going to be waiting longer than they might consider normal.
Things like this, you simply cannot predict in advance. Might be a good idea to understand the store's return policy if the new Express puts more of load on the network than is expected.

  • Mac Min cannot see PC with either Airport Express on ethernet connections

I am trying to network a Mac Mini, G4 Power Book, a PC laptop and PC desktop so far I can get the Mini to see the G4 and PC laptop but not the PC desktop. I have an Airport express and all but the PC desktop work OK with it. The PC desktop can see the Airport, which I have called MitchBVI, but when I try and connect to it nothing happens. The wireless card in the PC is a Linksys WMP5G. I have not enabled security yet as I wanted to get the whole network operating first.
I have tried linking the Mini to the PC with an Ethernet cable and if I do that the PC can see the Mini but not the other way round.
The fact that the PC laptop and the Mini can see each other suggest to me I have the correct permissions set on the Mini. As the PC desktop can see the Airport Express I assume that the Linksys card is working OK. As the PC desktop can see the Mac when the Ethernet cable is connected it would seem whatever permissions are needed on the desktop are set correctly.
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Mitch

Thanks I had found your site and changed the MSHOME and WORKGROUP to a diffferent name MITCH that is how I got it working in part. My Powerbook can see the Mac Mini and so can the PC. The former through a wireless connection the later by ethernet. I can ping the IP address of the PC from the mac mini but cannot make the connection.
For a while on the PC i actually had a wireless connection but could not access the net with it and it dropped out again. Maybe having an ethernet and wireless connection is the problemalthough with the wireless disabled that has not helped.
I had a spare Linksys card and tried replacing it but that did not help. As I said in my first post other PC laptop works fine.
    Thanks

  • Cannot configure my AirPort Express (1st generation) anymore. Am using AirPort Utility 5.4.2 Setup Assistant. What do I do wrong?

I cannot configure my AirPort Express (1st generation) as base Station anymore. I had to reset it because I lost my password.
I first tried my IPads (IOS 6). These returned the message: Your AirPort Express cannot be configured with this software. Go to apple.com/nl/support/airport for more information.
As it is an old one, I have downloaded the eldest available AirPort Utility I could find on the Apple site (AirPort utility 5.4.2) to my computer. I ran the AirPort Setup Assistant wireless and the assistant found my AirPort named " Apple Network XXXXX". (I notes that the Assistant also returned the message: If this is not the AirPort Extreme you want to set up ...)
    I clicked <NEXT>
After trying to connect to Network, I received the message: Cannot connect to network or there are no AirPort base stations on the network.
To be sure I retried running the Assistant after connecting the computer and the AirPort using an ethernet cable. The error message was the same.
    What do I do wrong?
Am I using the wrong Utility software? If so, which version do I have to download and from where?
Is a first generation AirPort anyhow compatible wth 4the generation IPads or shoud I just buy a new AirPort.
I hope someone can help me...

Ok, thanks for clarifying that for me. You are correct. Your iOS devices will NOT be able to administer the 802.11g base stations because the version of the AirPort Utility that they use is incompatible.
For Windows XP, AirPort Utility for Windows v5.5.3 should work. However, v5.4.2 that you have should work as well.
Your XP computer needs to connect to the AirPort's wireless network BEFORE you can access the AirPort with the AirPort Utility. You may want to try connecting your computer directly to the AirPort using an Ethernet cable.

  • Airport utility cannot find my Airport Express, repeated rescans, nothing, even with direct connect via Ethernet. Help!

I use Airport Express to stream iTunes to my home stereo. This is the ONLY thing I use it for. It quit working and now Airport Utility cannot find the Airport Express unit, even after repeated re-boots of all components, resetting the Airport Express, even when connected directly to my router via Ethernet. I use a D-Link wirless router.
I downloaded the latest Airport Utility, but it will NOT work with XP (from the Apple website, not my words).
The Airport Express will achieve a solid green indicator after reset, but Airport Utility cannot find it. Until Utility can find and recognize the Airport Express hardware, I cannot adjust or reset any settings, etc.
    Help!

I downloaded the latest Airport Utility, but it will NOT work with XP (from the Apple website, not my words).
The latest version of AirPort Utility.....5.6.1.....will only run on a Windows 7 machine.
Try AirPort Utility 5.5.3 for Windows (make sure that  you have Service Pack 3 installed on your PC, otherwise the application will not run on an XP machine).
The Airport Express will achieve a solid green indicator after reset, but Airport Utility cannot find it.
After a "hard reset" or "factory default reset", the light will not be green.....it will be slowly flashing amber after it restarts. See this Apple support document for more information on various resets:
