  • Is there a PCMCIA Ethernet card for Powerbook G4 OS X 10.4.8 ?

My ethernet port on my Powerbook G4 is damaged and can no longer be used. I looked into getting it repaired but that apparently requires replacing the entire system board at considerable cost. Rather than take that route, I was hoping to find a PCMCIA card with an Ethernet port but I cannot seem to find any that will work with OS X 10.4.x.
Does anyone know of such a card ?
    Thanks for your help !

    How old is your Powerbook?
A Mac older than 4 years old may need its clock battery replaced by an authorized service center. The clock battery dying can cause certain ports to malfunction as well. If it is under 4 years old and no surges broke the port, try zapping your PRAM, it may solve the problem once and for all:
    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n2238
If it is under AppleCare, there may be no cost at all. Any Mac under a year old is under AppleCare.
Also replacing the system board can be cheaper than from Apple directly if you take it to one of these places:
    http://www.dttservice.com/
    http://www.powerbookresq.com/
    http://www.microdocusa.com/
    http://www.macspecialist.com/
    http://www.techrestore.com/
In addition, if the port got burnt out by a storm surge or power surge your home/apartment insurance or credit card company you purchased the machine with may pay for the damage. So check each of those sources if you can't find an appropriate card.
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ lists a variety of upgrade cards in their database, and may have some ethernet cards you can look at.
By the way, the fact that port is broke suggests the possibility that any other system difficulty you are having may also be related to logicboard issue in anycase, so replacing the logicboard is a good idea if you are noticing other issues.

  • N card for Powerbook 1.67GHz G4

Does anyone know of any cards for the 15" G4 Powerbook 1.67GHz that will for sure work with the new Airport Extreme I just purchased. The speed is great on my iMac C2D and would like to get the Powerbook going at the same "N" speed.

  • Third party wi fi card for Powerbook 17"

I have a Powerbook 17" that has built in airport express that is not working properly. It worked great for about a year, then the signal stopped working -0 it now has to be withing a couple of feet of the base station. I have 4 other macs that continue to work fine on the same network, it is just the powerbook that has problems (no software upgrades, settings changes, etc.)
I have been told that I have to bring it in to Apple and have it sent away to be fixed, unfortunately I need it everyday for work and can't afford to be without it for a week or more.
I was wondering if there is another type of wifi card that I can install that would work without any issues on the Powerbook 17" running Tiger.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Dear JPL,
Thank you for your answer. The software give the possibility to use this card. I have a problem of affordability of that software because it is complicated to manage the connection.
I want to know if is it possible to use this card with the genuine Apple Airport software, this is the main issue that I would want to resolve.
    Thank you again.

  • I have a DVD-Rom and DVD-Video card for Powerbook and need advice

I acquired 2 accessory components for a G3 series powerbook. I have a dual G4 so have no use for them. There is a M4743 DVD-Rom for Powerbook and a DVD-Video PC card for G3 series Powerbook family M5163. There is also a software CD. I would like to sell them but I really don’t how to explain what this stuff does. I tried Ebay and did not find any matches. Does this make a DVD upgrade for a particular Powerbook? Is something else required? Is Ebay the best place to sell? Any idea what this stuff is worth? Any advice would be greatly appreciated
    Bob

    Robert,
You apparently have the DVD Video Player Kit for the Powerbook G3 Series "Wallstreet" M4753.
    This is the DVD-ROM module:
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/customer/product.php?productid=16219&cat=26 6&page=1
This is the DVD Decoder PC card:
    http://www.ifixit.com/cart/customer/product.php?productid=296&cat=&page=1
The above DVD PC card is not Apple's but there were two third-party vendors who also offered a DVD kit...VST and MCE. They all served the same purpose and will all be priced similarly.
Both PC card and optical drive are required to play DVD movies on the Wallstreet, plus Apple DVD Player is only supported when booted to 9.x, not 10.x.
I really cannot give you a fair price to ask; the above hardware prices are probably high but you will get an idea.

Odd... according to the specification in the PDF document available form this link http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86460 1.33 17" PowerBooks have Gigabit ethernet...
Check the System Profiler (click on the Apple logo, select "About this Mac" and press the "More..." button. I think the ethernet capabilities should be available somewhere).

  • Network Card for PowerBook G3

    Hello everyone,
I have an older laptop and I have been told that I can only access the Internet with dialup because the computer does not have a network card.
Is there one available for the PowerBook G3. Better yet, can I get a wireless card?
    Thank you very much

Macintosh PowerBook G3   Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier   Mac OS 8.5.1

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The Powerbook G3 has a built-in ethernet port. It is the same as a "network card" 10-base-T. It is slightly wider than the telephone cable though looks like a phone jack.
What age Powerbook G3 do you have? Some have a built-in port to insert an older style airport card (not the Airport Extreme), while others require using a PCMCIA WiFi card such as the Lucent Orinico Gold. See this article to identify your Powerbook G3:

  • PCMCIA Wifi card for PowerBook G4

    Hi,
I have bay a Belkin Wifi 802.11G PCMCIA Card on the apple shop and I couldn't set up it on my PowerBook G4.
Could someone help me with this?
    Thank you very much...

I had to install the software from http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm to get my Belkin card to work.
However, put the card in and click on the PCMCIA icon that appears in the menubar. See what chipset it says it is. If it isn't RALINK, then don't use the link I sent you. You may need to locate Mac-compatible drivers elsewhere.

  • Airport Extreme card for Powerbook G4 12"

I want to get an Airport Extreme card for my 12" Powerbook, however, am a little confused as to which one will work with it. I am currently running a 867Mhz PowerPC system. I have seen two part numbers for the Airport Extreme card, A1026 and A1027. I was hoping that someone might be able to clarify the correct one I need, thanks.

behappysomeday, Welcome to the discussion area!
Those cards are both the same thing. Either one will work.

  • New wifi card for PowerBook G4 (2002, OS 10.4.11)

    Hello,
Can anyone recommend a wifi card for a PowerBook G4?
I've just bought a secondhand model, and I'd like to broaden its wifi capability. Being able to use WPA security would be a good start.
    - Richard

I bought the WiFi card from eBay. It's a Chinese clone of a Motorola WN825Gv3 (part number: 518565-001-00). Here's the old eBay link: http://bit.ly/XmW0Gb
I can't remember exactly what settings I used on my Powerbook – mainly because I clicked things at random until it worked – but I did have to click "renew lease" in WiFI settings to get the card to work.
I didn't have to change any settings on my router, but the card isn't compatible with 5Hz WiFi frequencies, or the "n" speed WiFi.
Other than having to renew the lease occasionally, the card works smoothly.

  • Airport Card for PowerBook G4

How do I know if my PowerBook G4 is airport ready? What kind of airport card would I use?

According to Apple Specifications, your PB would require the original AirPort Card.
Unfortunately, Apple no longer supplies these, however, there are several vendors (Caveat Emperor) out there that still do.
A few examples, doing a Google search for "AirPort Card":

  • Airport card for powerbook G4 12" Aluminum

I have a powerbook G4 12" aluminum and I have looked everywhere for an airport card. I have gotten two original airport cards and they did not fit, these cards are just a smidge too wide for the card slot. I know there is an apple card that will fit it because it had one installed at one point. I do recall a comment that there was a "small" airport card for the 12" aluminum but I have had no success in locating one. Can someone please help?

Yes, you could, but sometimes those people charge more than Apple does for its refurbished ones. And Apple's comes with a one-year warranty, while the eBay people usually don't, unless it's an eBay storefront seller. (Whatever they're called).
So, use your best judgment. Coming from me who buys things on eBay a lot, I'm not saying eBay is bad. But just comparing the two ($29 with a one-year warranty and straight from Apple, versus whatever price on eBay, same/higher/less than Apple's price, but possibly without warranty, etc., in this case, Apple would be the best bet).

Just looked over at eBay and did a search for "Airport Extreme Card" and the prices for Buy It Now range from $24.00 to $40.00. Current bids for those that are bid-only range from $0.99 to $18.00. So $29 from Apple isn't bad at all. (I do not work for Apple, by the way).

  • Use compatible wi-fi card with powerbook G3

    Good Morning friends,
I have bought a Wi-Fi pc card complatible with my powerbook g3; I have no problems, but I cannot use the Airpot native software of my Operating system.
Is there any method, or solution to use Airport software to configure and correctly use my peripheral?
I have a card called Ralink technology RT2500.
Thank you for your answers and your help.

  • Airport Extreme Cards for Powerbook Ti

So, why noy make an internal airport extreme card for the Ti Powerbooks? It's not like theyre that old of a model. and if other companys can make em for external use why cant Apple do this?
Hopefully someone at Apple reads this. Ive been an avid supporter of Apple comps and its not like customers such as myself wouldnt actually buy these if they were to release them. Think about it....every titanium power book user would prolly run out and re-buy the already installed cards all over again. Makes sense to me.
    WM

It may make sense to you, Wil, but not many people nowadays are investing in hardware enhancements for their three-and-four-year-old Tibooks. And with other manufacturers producing cards that can be installed in a Tibook and moved on to the next laptop without ever opening up the Tibook, and offering (in many cases) far better wireless range than the built-in Airport antenna can offer, Apple would face tough competition for the few customers who might be interested in such a product.

  • Wireless internet card for powerbook 1400

Can anyone recommend a wireless PC card for the Powerbook 1400? (I know...an anchient machine but I want to throw it in the kitchen for looking up recipes and other light futy stuff.) I think it needs to be a PCMCIA card or something like that. Thanks.

    Richard,
You can run an 802.11b 11Mbps PC card on the 1400 with the correct wireless drivers and this is dependent on which version OS you have installed on the 1400. The card you want is the WaveLAN or Orinoco wireless PC card. And if your 1400 were running OS 9.1, you could use Apple's AirPort 1.2 software.
Here is a more extensive guide to your wireless setup:
