PC Companion on virtual Windows XP

PC Companion on virtual Windows XP
Hi,
I am going to upgrade my Xperia from Sony original last KitKat to first Sony original Lollilop.
The only Windows we have is a virtual machine running in VirtualBox env and non-Windows as host.
PC Companion installation succeeded.
Connecting the Xperia to virtual Win XP succeeded.
Connecting Xperia to PC Comp. succeeded.
Before performing the upgrade I want to make a backup using PCC.
Starting the backup process succeeds, selecting the items to be backed up succeeds, inclusively the manual selection.
However the backup process won't finish.
The progress bar can be at approx 98 percentage of progress and remaining time display can
change in strange value ranges (from approx 1 hour to some hours).
Xperia connects to the physical host through USB 3.0 port.
However there is a second option which was tried as well and also without success,
USB 2.0 port in physical host's wired keyboard which connects to phys host through
USB 2.0 cable and the host's USB 3.0 port.
Up to now only Sony original fw versions were used for fw upgrades.
How to make successfully the backup?
I afraid that if already backup can't run without problem the upgrade can be a disaster.

Indeed, the backup process runs onto described troubles only if during the backup setup
select the option "manual selection of data to be backed up".
No problems if this option is not checked out.
Problems reappear if to make selection only on this option.
First conclusion from this for me, PCC in this setup is basically possible.
I used to select this option and subsequently select all folders which show any files inside.
Just in order to have whole flash backed up in case of troubles during or after backup.
Basically the external SD card is removed for duration of this backup and the fw upgrade.
Data on it is backed up on separte way.
Actually this is strange, because on all previous backups it worked very well.
I wonder if it is a sign of some error in file system or similar generic problem, how is your opinion?
I afraid a backup without source data as selected under "manual selection"
is not complete and in case of upgrade problems  I can't roll back to all my previous data.
More narrowing by further iterative exclusion of folders/files will generate lot of efforts.
I can't be Xperia's slave.

Is there a way to block internet access when I have a virtual windows xp box within Windows 7?
The reason, is I just want to run one application and restrict internet access as I some users are restricted from the internet.

    Hi, Juke.
I'm afraid I'm a dummy, and don't know how to do this. I'm sure as April 8 approaches, a lot of people with important DOS or XP apps will be wanting to insulate their XP VM from potential hacking while still running programs locally.

  • Full Backup of PC Running Virtual Windows XP Under 64-bit Windows 7 Pro on a T410

I have a QuadCore (Intel i7) T410 with a 320GB HDD running 64-bit W7Pro.  Under that environment I am running a separate Virtual Windows XP system.  The T410 hardware and Virtual PC system allows me to see the primary C: drive of the T410 from either the W7 or XP environment, and the Virtual PC implementation is essentially based on the existence of 3 very large disk files on the primary drive which contain the entire Virtual PC image.
I want to back up my HDD in such a way that I can use the restore function to re-install both the W7 system image and all of its programs and files, and the Virtual PC system image as well.  What is the best way to do this.??

    Hi
Lenovo backup utility will not backup virtual Operating System, you may need to look for some third party software.

  • LPTI redirect in Virtual WIndows XP mode using WIndows 7 Pro

I have an application that only prints to LPT1. The application only can run on XP so I installed it on Virtual Windows XP mode. The application works ok but I cannot print. The printer I have is a USB printer that is installed on Windows 7 Pro and I am
able to share that printer in XP mode. In the past when the application was installed on a dedicated XP Pro operating system, I was able to get the application to print to my USB printer by using the NET USE LPT1 command.
My problem now is how to I get the application installed on Virtual Windows XP mode to be directed to the shared USB printer on Windows 7 Pro when it is looking for LPT1
    Your help is greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
XP Mode does not have access to parallel ports so the DOS command to use LPT1 within XP Mode will fail, have you checked this link?

  • Virtualized Windows 8.1 with Hyper-V as a home PC?

    Hello everyone,
I'm getting ready to reimage my Windows 8.1 home PC as it has been unreliable of late and I simply don't have the time to invest troubleshooting the various oddities of its behavior. Since this is something I tend to do somewhat regularly, though, I began
to wonder if maybe this time I should do something different. I'm considering installing Hyper-V and configuring a virtual machine to use as my daily PC, then making that machine's virtual disk my bootable volume.
I know this probably isn't ideal but there's two big reasons that make this sound like an attractive option to me. First and foremost, I tinker with my PC all the time. As a consequence, I break things on a regular basis. That's usually fine, but eventually
I simply want to get on with using my PC and so I have to invest time reimaging, repairing, etc. to get my system back to normal. Virtualizing my system would mean I could accomplish this incredibly easily, simply by reverting to an earlier snapshot.
The other point is that I am currently attending school to become a network administrator and, well, what better way to acquaint myself better with Hyper-V than to use it on a daily basis! I'm already fairly familiar with virtualization having used VMWare
Workstation/Player and Oracle VirtualBox rather extensively at work and for school.
Anyway, this sounds wonderful in my head but I have some concerns I can't really find answers for...
1.It doesn't sound like I can simply install Hyper-V as my "host" OS without installing Windows 8 in non-virtualized form. I don't really want to have a Windows 8 host on which I run a Windows 8 guest VM. I want to simply boot to a virtualized
Windows 8 environment that I can manage from the hypervisor, no mucking with a host OS.
2.If the above is possible, how much of a performance overhead is this going to have in my system? My PC is more than well equipped to handle a VM or two but as I use it for gaming and other resource-intensive applications I would not want to do this if
    there's, say, a 5%+ performance loss.
Has anyone done this? Any recommendations?

I don't know much about Hyper-V, but I use VMware virtual machines all the time for tinkering.  That's a good way to keep from doing potentially damaging things to your bootable host system.  I don't know whether Hyper-V offers snapshots, but I
can restore a VM to an earlier configuration in an eyeblink - VERY handy.
Keep in mind a virtual machine will have lower performance than the host system, so unless you just have overwhelming resources and power perhaps you'll want to keep to using your host system for most things.
There are a lot of good habits and things you can do to keep a system stable.  I noticed you mentioned having to reinstall Windows quite often.  I find that unacceptable, and in fact every system I've run - going all the way back to Windows
95 - I've only ever installed once.  I'm not kidding.  I've even restored Windows from backup onto a replacement system on two different occasions and was back up and running with a fully configured system in very short order - saving all the hassle
of reinstallation, copying of data, etc.  I've documented how I manage systems in my books.
First and foremost, I'd suggest NEVER running an automatic "cleaner" application.  Would you invite a stranger into your home to just delete whatever they feel like?  Of course not.
But there are a few things you should do from time to time to keep a system running healthy, including bettering your default security environment and running a SysInternals tool called Autoruns to look over all the programs that have installed themselves
to run in the background.  I have MOST of those disabled, because they're simply not needed!
To beef up security, probably the best thing you can do is to download something called the MVPS hosts file, which blocks named access to literally tens of thousands of parasite web sites.  The key is that it does so passively, meaning you're not running
any more software.  It just causes Windows to locally resolve parasite web site names to address 0.0.0.0.  It's very effective.  Beyond that, reconfigure Internet Explorer to not run ActiveX from any site in the Internet Zone.  Finally,
replace Windows' own security software with something better - I prefer Avast! myself.
We've already discussed using virtual machines to do your poking around.  That's really effective.
I encourage you to get into virtualization.  It opens up whole new realms of possibilities.
    Good luck!

  • How to get virtual window in macbook air

i have purchased macbook sir 6 days back . i am finding it difficult to work on macbook . Mostly i need to use ms office and another designing softwares like adobe photoshop and adobe flash etc .
Please tell me the procedure of creating a virtual window in my macbook.
    TIA

Please explain what you mean by a virtual window? I assume you mean run Windows in a virtual machine?
I think you would be better off using the Mac versions of those software, Office, Photoshop & Flash can all be installed on a Mac.
Running a virtual machine will decrease performance and should be used when an app has no Mac version. The other option is to use bootcamp, which makes a complete Windows install on your Mac in addition to OS X. This basically defeats the purpose of buying a Mac if you only plan to run Windows.
You will need a Mac licence for Office & Photoshop, see if you can 'cross grade' them…

  • Anyone using CS4 or CS5 on Virtual Windows?

I have a few issues with the clone tool in both CS4 and CS5.
Basically it says program error when I try to clone.
    Any and all ideas appreciated

Looks like no one answered your request...  Perhaps you didn't give enough explanation.
Can you be more specific about what you mean by "Virtual Windows"?
I run Photoshop in VMware virtual machines, running 32 bit XP, Vista, and Windows 7 for testing.  I don't see any problems with the clone tool.

  • Can I run rhino and grasshopper on a virtual windows on my macbook air?

Can I run rhino and grasshopper on a virtual windows on my macbook air? I keep getting a not enough memory message.

The USB stick from your MBA cannot be used on any other Mac. You will need to purchase a retail copy of Snow Leopard for your other computer.
If you need to purchase Snow Leopard you can still purchase a copy from Apple's online store's telesales agents.[1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775.] Ask for a Sales Representative.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.

  • Best software to install Virtual Windows

    Hi everyone,
I want to install windows on my Mac. I don't want to use bootcamp and partition the hard disk. I want to go with the other option: Virtual Windows. As far as I know there are three options: 1- VMware, 2- Parallel desktop and 3- Virtual box
I am not clear which one is the best. I go through a lot of comparison that can be found everywhere but I couldn't arrive in a good conclusion. These comparisons usually go deep into technical details and I can't understand what they imply! I am fine with Mac and I just want Windows for some simple tasks that sometimes is not easy to find an alternative for in Mac. So, which one do you think is the best for me?
    Thanks in advance.

1 are without any comparison the biggest player on virtualisation
2 have a long OS X history and integrate well with OS X and support running a bootcamp partition as a virtual machine too
3 is free and works perfectly well for most people needs
no matter what you choose you will not be able to run fancy 3d games or 3d demanding cad applications as with virtual machines the video card seen by windows will be a default "dummy" generic video card which is just the virtual machine passing on the draw requests to the host operating system

  • Virtual Windows applications vs Mac applications

    Hello everyone!
I know that macbook air is not created for running games but I am up for some old ones with low system requirements
    1) So I would like to learn what is the best way to run games : instal them on virtual Windows and start playing? Or is Mac version of the same games better and will the game work faster or not?
    2) And if playing games on virtual Windows will work better, what programm would you recommend for installing Windows?  I used Parallel Desktop because it is extremely comfortable, but I was told that this way of instaling windows for gaming is the worst since Macbook air has to run both Mac and Windows simultaneously.
    3) Will CrossOver Games run my games just as good as if I installed mac version of the game? Well ofcourse if CrossOver will be able to instal and run it . ..
Thank you very much for help ! =)
P.S. If it does metter, the macbook air is new  13,3 inch  top complectation (i7) so it should be able to run games.

For best results in Windows Gaming use Apple BootCamp to install Windows so that it can use the native (real) hardware of your MBA.
    http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
    Virtualization always slows down.
Depending on the games you wanna play Parallels or VMWare Fusion might suffice.
Crossover is a choice for certain games but be sure to check their Compatibility Table whether the games you wanna play are supported.
In the end it comes down to use the Trial versions of Parallels/Fusion or Crossover and see if you are satisfied.
Mac versions of Windows games are not that many to find and mostly such 'ports' have a tendency to run slower than than their Windows versions.
