PC connecting to Xserve 10.5.8

When I try to connect to my xserve from a pc the login shows up as Machine/User. I only have user names setup on the server. Is there something I need to change on the PC or on the Xserve. I am running 10.5.8. I can turn on allow guest to get around this, but I feel safer if the machines are authenticating in some way.

Maudib,
Are you using Windows XP?  What happens when you authenticate with the local server account on the Xserve?

  • Is it possible to directly connect two Xserves with a Promise VTrak E610fD via Fibre?

I have two Xserves and I'd like to connect them with a Promise VTrak E610fD. As this storage has two controllers, I'd like to connect both Xserve with both controllers. Is this setup possible? Can I access (read and write) the same disk array with both Xserves simultaneously (Xsan?) or do I have to create two separate arrays?

Hello bleistift, and welcome to the AppleBoards,
Fibre channel is SCSI which means that any device connected by fibre assumes it is in sole control of that device. When you attach more than one machine via fibre both machines assume they are in control and unexpected behaviors and data corruption ensues. SAN (like Apple's XSAN) provides a layer of arbitration over the shares allowing multiple fibre connections to play nicely with one another while still being connected over fibre.
You could easily connect two machines to a single RAID box if they are accessing different RAID volumes at the same time, but once you start connecting to the same data at the same time you need SAN.

  • How to connect multiple Xserve Raid for Best Performance

I like to get an idea how to connect multiple Xserve Raid to get the best performance for FCP to do multiple stream HD.

Again, for storage (and retrieval), FireWire 400 should be fast enough. If you are encoding video directly to the external drive, then FireWire 800 would probably be beneficial. But as long as the processing of the video is taking place on the fast internal SATA drive, and then you are storing files on the external drive, FireWire 400 should be fine.
Instead of speculating about whether it will work well or not, you need to set it up and try your typical work flow. That is the only way you will know for sure if performance is acceptable or not.
For Time Machine, you should use a single 1.5TB drive. It is likely that by the time your backup needs comes close to exceeding that space, you will be able to buy a 3TB (or larger) single drive for the same cost. Also, I would not trust a RAID where the interaction between the two drives is through two USB cables and a hub. If your primary storage drive fails, you need your backup to be something that is simple and reliable.
Oh, and there should be no problem with the adapter, if you already have it and it works.
Edit: If those two external drives came formatted for Windows, make sure you have use Disk Utility Partition tab to repartition and reformat the drive. When you select the drive in the Disk Utility sidebar, at the bottom of the screen +Partition Map Scheme+ should say *GUID Partition Table*. When you select the volume under the drive in the sidebar, Format should say *Mac OS Extended (Journaled)*.

Thanks for the info. I  just  managed to install Slackware. I kept getting hung up on the kernel install. When I figured out how to install the 2.6.17.13 kernel along with the kernel modules package, everthing else went smoothly. Now I have to figure out how to tell the difference between Slackware packages and all the others and who to trust. After Slackware Arch should be a breeze. See you in a week or so. Ps Slax Live CD looks interesting too.

  • Connect 2 Xserve RAIDs to one Xserve

    Hello folks,
I have two XServe RAIDs which I bought on eBay and one Xserve G4 with FC RAID controller (2 SFP connectors). I also own a FC switch. Is it possible to connect both XServe RAIDs to the one server and have an access to all arrays there?
    Thanks
    Robert

    1) What does the Fibre say under System Profiler? Do you see SCSI devices hanging off your fibre? Because you should.
    2) There is also a Fibre Utility or Fibre in your System preferences depending on your OS version. Check that to see what it says.
    3) If everything seems right and nothing is working that's often a sign of LUN masking. You will need a copy of RAID Admin 1.5 (not 1.5.1) to check for LUN masking if you start to suspect it as it was removed in v1.5.1.
3a) There can also be zoning on your FC switch and other things partitioning up your network.
    4) Hook up RAID Admin to the machine over ethernet (if you haven't already) to get a look at the RAID internals.
As a sanity check I would start by plugging the RAID sides directly into the computer and eliminating the switch as a factor. That should start to narrow down the variables quickly. If you're getting communication and negotiation but no visibility I would suspect LUN masking. If you get volume visibility through the cable but not the switch then look at the switch.
    Good luck,

  • Trouble connecting to xserve.

The connections are very slow and when I log into the server monitor instead of showing an ip address for the client, it lists it as "broadcasthost" instead of an ip address. How do I get the connection to show the ip address correctly? Any help is appreciated.

The usual errors here involve networking or a DNS-level error.
Launch Terminal.app from Applications > Utilities from a session on the Xserve box, or ssh into the Xserve box, and issue the following (diagnostic, no changes made) command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
And see if that reports some information and no changes needed, or some information and an indication that network changes are required.
Also, if you have both NICs active on the Xserve...
Are you using link aggration? (I'd guess not, based on what you've written)
Are both NICs connected to the same network segment or same switch, and are both in the same IP subnet?

    Hello,
We are a school that is trying to connect to our server from our house on both mac and pc. Macs work fine but pcs don't.
We have an apple xserve running 10.4 that is connected to our network with an outside ip address.

Please provide more details, as you haven't given us much to go on. Help us help you.
What specifically happens when you try to connect? Do you get an error message? If so, what?
    How is the network setup?
Is Windows/SMB file sharing turned on at the server?
Are the appropriate ports opened on your routers to allow SMB protocols through?

  • Connect Intel Xserve and G4 Xserve?

I have a new Intel Xserve which I upgraded to from a G4 Xserve, which I think I'd like to keep and use to run FileMaker to serve a website. (Perhaps also use it for IP failover or backups, too, but first things first.)
How to configure them? Should I connect the G4 to the internet on en0 and to the router on en1? If the G4 is an OD replica, how does it talk to the Intel?
Any advice appreciated to point me in the right direction.

It all depends. If the router can also act as a reliable firewall, connect it to a switch and hook up both servers to the switch. You could then make whichever one an OD master and the other a Replica.
If the router isn't a real firewall, throw one in, connect to a switch, and then connect the servers to the switch.
If you're expecting the router to just be a roouter, and make your server the firewall, you're probably not taking the best approach and making you're computing life more difficult.
I don't mean to sound like a dope, but you should post back with a more complete description of your network, and what you can afford to put in your network. You can do a lot with an OS X Server or two if that's what you have, but there are better alternatives for some parts of your network.

  • PCs unable to connect to Xserve

    Hi,

  • Windows XP Could connect to Xserve and now can't

I have several PCs running Windows XP connected to the Xserve via the LAN. It was working just fine until one day it quit. I tried restarting the PC and when that didn't work, I tried restarting the XServe, but it still doesn't work.

    Hi
Have you recently updated the PCs or installed something like NIS? You could try launching terminal on the server and key in:
    su root
Supply the password when prompted, dont worry if you dont see anything being typed, this is normal as there is no echo in terminal. Now key in:
    serveradmin status smb
    If it says "RUNNING"
then check the physical structure of the network, cables etc as well as the IP address range. Server and PCs should be on the same IP address range and subnet. If it says "STOPPED" issue this command:
    serveradmin start smb
Test by trying a connection with a client.

  • Connection to Xserve

i got problem with my xserve. i try to connect or opening final cut server app from my client site but they reply with the server is not exist or not available. sometimes it works but suddenly can disconnect.
this problem also happen when i try to using a remote desktop to remote the server, when i try to connect to the server they mention the server is not available but sometime it can connect but after logon for several minutes (2 minutes) than connection lost.
i try to ping and it works find there is a reply from the server and if i try to connect using afp its works fine even i can see and transfer and putting my data like my network directory.
can anybody help whats wrong with this ?

Not much detail to go on, there.
In addition, please more specific about what you've tried. In my experience, one person's definition of 'tried everything' is not the same as the next person's.
For example, have you determine whether the server is rebooting itself?
Have you checked the network connection? replaced the cable?
What do the logs have to say about it?

  • Help, when connecting to xserve with remote desktop, lost menu bar

Here is my situation, I have an xserve running 10.5.5, this weekend the server rebooted itself and when it came back up LDAP was not running and had to be restarted. I fixed that problem but now whenever I connect to the server using remote desktop, the menu bar is missing and I cannot open any applications. The server is not located here and can not be rebooted unless absolutely necessary. Is there a way to fix this problem by SSH in the terminal? Sorry if this doesnt make too much sense I am relatively new to mac servers. Thanks in advance

I think your priorities should be first, to get the server on a decent & properly-rated UPS !
If it restarted (undesirably) for a reason other than a power outage/issue, that should get addressed promptly.
Since you have ssh access (hopefully very well secured), I'd suggest you run use diskutil to verify the system-volume as well as run a permissions repair, and then set aside the Preferences folder for your account (whichever one you try to use for ARD),
and you can kickstart the ARD client.

  • Connecting the Xserve to DMZ port

    Hi all,
As a security need I need to connect my web server to a DMZ port on our Firewall router. I was wondering if connecting one 1G port to our internal switch and one to the DMZ port is secure enough or do I have to buy an extra server to service our web hosting?
    Thanks,
    Ziv

There's not enough information in your post to be able to answer your question.
What is it you're trying to achieve?
What is your definition of 'secure'?
No one can tell you whether you are 'secure enough' until they have some idea of what you're trying to do.
If it's a matter of trying to setup the server to handle requests from external clients on the DMZ net while also serving trusted clients on the internal net, then that's what the two ports are designed to do. However, without knowing what services you're running it's impossible to tell what extra steps (if any) you need to take to secure the system.

We have an xserve early 2008 that we want to hook up to a xserve RAID.  What do we need in order to do this?

    Hi
A Fibre Channel Card installed in the XServe and at least one Fibre Channel cable. If your XServe RAID has both controllers populated with drives you'll need two.
You should find these manuals useful?
