Pc Desktop and macbook sharing same cable modem?

is it possible to connect my pc to my modem using usb and my mac using the ethernet at the same time?

Unless it's something special, you probably can't connect both the USB and Ethernet connection to your modem as it's likely just a modem and not a router. There is perhaps something you can do until your router arrives...
You could connect the modem to your PC with USB and (assuming your PC also has an ethernet card, which most will) you can then use 'internet connection sharing' to pipe out the connection on the ethernet. You can connect the PC's ethernet to a simple HUB for sharing or connect the PC to the Mac directly with an ethernet cable (although to connect to computers directly over ethernet you need to use a 'cross over' cable vs. the standard ethernet cable).
Back in the day before home routers were cheap and common I used a setup like that to share our home internet connection in our house via a wired network (with a dialup connection!!!)
Anyway, that should work but it does require some setup so since you've got the router in the mail might be best to just wait for that...

I have a iMac Desktop and MacBook Pro laptop. I generate my work related files on both of these machines. After a few days or weeks, I have new files on some folders on either of the machines that is not on the other machine. What is the best way to keep the files in these machines synchronized?

How did you transfer the files to the iMac.  If you exported the files out of the MB library using Kind = Current you should get the edited version.  Any other  option may not.
If you want to keep the two libraries "synced"  any photos you want to move to the iMac should be added to an album, connect the two Mac with a LAN, Target Disk Mode,  Transferring files between two computers using FireWire, with WiFi. and use the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager to copy that album from the MB library to iMac library.  It will also copy the original and edited versions, keywords, titles, etc.

  • Fcp x to both my desktop and macbook

I would like to buy fcp x, but can I download fcp x to both my desktop and macbook, and if so, how ?

Assuming they both meet the system requirements for it, you can freely redownload it to the second computer.

  • Sharing Time Machine Back Up with Desktop and MacBook

    Hello,
In preparation for my work on the road I back up my desktop using Time Machine on my Time Capsule, wipe my MacBook clean and Migrate my files to the MacBook so I can take everything. In recent years I notice when syncing my devices, that process has improved and the iPhone,iPad recognises the MacBook as basically the same as my desktop and I don't have to wipe and sync the device. Thank you Apple engineers for that improvement.
This year is a bit different. I have done the migration, but am delayed departing. I would like to share my Time Machine back up across the two computers. Sort of a poor mans macbook sync. I would treat the Macbook as disposable and the Desktop as primary. Make changes to the iMac then update the MacBook before I leave.
Can I use my desktop , back it up to Time Machine, then update the macbook as required? I would do this until I leave.
Also I noticed for the first time the MacBook is running a different OS to the iMac. Will this matter to me?
    Thanks,
    Ken
Desktop is an iMac 24 running MacOS10.6.8, 2.4 GHz C2D
MacBook is an early 2008 running MacOS 10.6.3, 2.4 GHz C2D
    Time Capsule 802.11n, 1st Generation, version 7.6.4
    iPhone 3GS iOS 6.1.6
    iPad 2 , iOS 7.1.2

So, the macbook today, I did get this message from the OS re TimeMachine
"Would you like to reuse the backup "/Volume/....sparsebundle"
The backup was created on a different computer. If you reuse this backup it can no longer be used by the original computer.
I selected Reuse Backup. This is very convenient. I am wondering now.
How do I select back and forth on the computer to reuse the various back ups?

  • Sharing Itunes library between windows desktop and macbook not working

Hi, I just bought my laptop today. I've had it about 3 hours. I have 2147 songs on my windows itunes library, and i would love to be able to put them on the laptop too. Now, both of my computers are on the local area connection, but for some reason when i go to network places on my desktop the laptop doesnt show up. When i go to iTunes on my laptop and click import, i find my server, i find my computer, and then it asks me for a domain name, a username, and a password. I've tried multiple combinations, i'm not sure which username/pw combo its looking for but no matter what I do i get no error messages telling me i'm wrong, but absolutely nothing happens. Please help.

This is a compleentary advice: MAKE SURE THAT WINDOWS AND MAC HAVE THE SAME GROUP NAME!
In mac go to the preferences and activate Windows Sharing from the network.
Then go with the finder to applications utility and Directory Access. SMB is the protocol that OS X uses to exchange with Windows. Go into its proprieties and choose the same name you have given to your windows group (USUALLY "WORKGROUP" but it may differ)
To change the name in windows Xp is even easier. right click the m computer and choose properties and then the "Name" tag - change the group - You'll need to restart.
Almost forgot: you have to share the Music Folder on XP to have it show up from the mac. Right click it and choose Properties - Share tab - Activate network sharing
And remember, it is easier with a USB drive

  • Public and Priviate network from same cable modem - more questions please

A couple of weeks ago I asked about having both a privite network and a public wireless network that would work from one cable modem. The requirement is that the private network not be seen or be "hackable" by users on the public network.
Duane gave us the approach to use and we think we have it right, but because the security of our private net is so important, we want to make sure. We will not do the public network if the security of our private network is in danger.
    Here is how things look:
Cable modem --> Router 1 WAN port
Router 1 regular ports --> Private Network -and- Router 2 WAN port
Router 2 regular port --> AirPort Extreme WAN port
We have our public network set up as WPA Personal and we broadcast the network name. The password for this network will be shared wiith users as they enter our public area where they can use their PCs. The default login/password on both routers and the AirPort Extreme have been changed. Connecting via AirPort to the public network I can see Router 2 but not Router 1 or any of my computers, printers, etc. when I browse the network via the Finder.
    Do I have it right?
Does this setup give users on the public network any way to get to my private network, computers, and files? Are there any tests/experiments that I could run to further validate this setup?
    How secure is it?
Am I asking for problems by offering a public network that shares some of the resources of the private network - modem, MAC address, IP addresses of routers, etc.
From the public net we have attempted to use the IP addresses of the computers on the private network without success.
The best answer I could receive is that there is no way to hack the private from the public. If this is not the answer, how secue am I.
    Tim

When you state "Router 1 regular ports(8) feeding Private Network..." do you mean that there is another private router or are the private clients directly connected to router 1?
If you have a private router, the public devices connected to the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) could address and reach anything on Router 1 including the private router's WAN side.
The firewall in private router should block any of the public access to clients of private router. So any traffic from private router should be safe as long as the public has no physical access to router 1 nor router 2's WAN port.
If the private clients are directly connected to router 1, then the public clients can directly access any of your private clients. The traffic among private clients and from private clients to Internet would be secure (as long as my previous note about physical access is true).

  • Connecting AX and ethernet wire to cable modem (and ARD).

    Hi all,
This has to be easy, but after 10 minutes of searching, I can't readily find the answer.
I have a cable modem (with one port) which works with my Macbook just fine. I plugged in an Airport Express (and used wireless only) and it works fine also, EXCEPT:
When using Apple Remote Desktop (the latest version) to control the Macs at my office, the status of all remote Macs is: Screen Sharing. When I connect to a remote system, I can see and control that Mac, but I can't copy anything either way (from remote to local or visa-versa).
When connected to the cable modem with an ethernet cable, everything works fine.
SO, I would like to connect maybe a 3 port hub to the cable modem and use both the ethernet cable and the AX (for other computers & iPhone) at the same time. Will this work? Can someone suggest a good hub/switch for this if it does?
Secondly, is there a way to use ARD on a wireless computer? It would be nice to go to a hot-spot and control my remote Macs.
    Thanks.
    mike p.

SO, I would like to connect maybe a 3 port hub to the cable modem and use both the ethernet cable and the AX (for other computers & iPhone) at the same time. Will this work?
No. You need a router not an Ethernet hub (or switch). The AX can't do the job because it only has a single Ethernet port.
Secondly, is there a way to use ARD on a wireless computer?
Sure. It works just like any other computer behind a router. You must configure the computer to be at a fixed IP address and then forward/map the appropriate ports through the router to the computer.

  • Can't run both PBG4 and Macbook on same TC network

I am trying to connect both a pbg4 and macbook core duo to my network using newly purchased time capsule. I first used Airport Utility from macbook hard wired via ethernet and set up the network. I have an AsDsl network with an old Westell Modem that always works in bridge mode and connects to my ISP via PPPoE. I used to use an US Robotics 8054 wireless router into whose WAN port I would plug in the modem.
I set up the TC as the main router, enabling my password at my ISP. Everything worked like a charm with the Macbook. When I tried to connect the PBG4, no luck. No matter what I did the PBG4 couldn't get the TC.
So I attached the US robotics to the one of the TC LAN ports. Using my old network, the pbg4 can access the TC and the internet. The macbook cannot access the TC at all.
I think this might be a DHCP problem. I think my set up doesn't allow more than one computer to be on the web. Also, something about the US robotics network makes the TC network invalid.
    Any thoughts?

if you have two hard drives the easiest might be to install panther on the second hard drive. this way you don't have top partition anything. make sure the drive is properly formatted it should be formatted mac os extended journaled with APM partition scheme. then just boot from the Panther install disk and install panther on the second drive. note that this will only work if your mac originally came with panther. did it?
to switch between installs you can change the startup disk in system preferences->startup disk. then reboot. alternatively, reboot normally and hold option at the chime. this will boot you into startup disk manager where you can choose which drive to boot from.

  • Two networks - same cable modem

I have two networks in my home - an "n only" using the Airport Extreme Base Station into which the cable modem is attached, and a "g only" which is using the newly purchased Airport Express and which is connected to the Airport Extreme Base Station. The express is setup as a bridge only (I believe the Extreme is assigning the IP addresses). All seems to work.
    Two Q's:
    1. Can I use the Express in the fashion I mention above but connected wirelessly to the extreme? If so, how do I configure each unit?
    2. I have an Apple TV and was wondering if changing things so that the Express assigns the IP addresses if things might speed up a little regarding Apple TV syncs.
    Thanks!!

morahgreg, Welcome to the discussion area!
    1. Can I use the Express in the fashion I mention above but connected wirelessly to the extreme? If so, how do I configure each unit?
If you are willing to lose the high speed of the 802.11n only network, you can configure the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to operate in an 802.11b/g compatible mode. Then any 802.11b/g client can join including the AirPort Express (AX).
    2. I have an Apple TV and was wondering if changing things so that the Express assigns the IP addresses if things might speed up a little regarding Apple TV syncs.
    No it will not.

  • Airport Express to share printer with HP desktop and Macbook Pro?

How do I network my Mac Pro and HP desktop to use the same printer?  Any details are never too small..Tks

Run the AirPort Admin Utility and make sure the AirPort Express has DHCP disabled. You should then be able to see computers on the ethernet portion of your network from the wireless portion.

  • Hp v40 on xp desktop and is shared via wireless network. laptop with windows 7 wont print on v40.

Can't print from laptop (windows 7) via wireless router .to desktop (windows xp) with usb attached HP v40 all in one.
    Laptop (7) ----- wireless router ----- desktop (xp) - -usb-- HPv40
Worked when laptop was running xp.
Laptop spools print job to desktop and seemingly completes, but the desktop simply ignores the print job.
    No error messages.
printing from the desktop work just fine.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

I am reporting this as solved. I submitted this problem. The problem started when updated my laptop from Windows XP to Windows 7. When I did, The Lexmark printer on my desktop worked find with the new laptop system. The HP V40 did not work. The Desktop simply received each print job submitted from the Laptop (via a wireless local network) and discarded it. I could see the print job come into the V40 print queue and could see it disappear.
Here is what I did to solve the problem:
I tried a dozen or so combinations of removing and installing the printer on both my Windows 7 laptop and my Windowx XP desktop (with the V40 attached via USB), and manually removing and installing print drivers on my desktop  PC, it finally works. What did I do? I have no idea, but I believe that manually removing the v40 drivers on the desktop was part of the solution. While viewing the available printers on my XP desktop, I clicked on File and one of the tabs led me to a place where I could remove drivers for each printer ( I just removed the ones for the V40).
Here is what I DID NOT DO:
I did not follow the advice of the HP support person that I contacted via the telephone. That advice was to reinstall Windows XP on my desktop. That clearly was not the problem when I spoke to him. But he would NOT listen to reason. Thankfully, I have enough PC knowledge to know that his advice bas bogus
I am pleased with the resulting availablilty of the V40 again.
I have no idea how to officially close this problem.
I would be happy to discuss this with anyone else who has a similar problem, but when I submitted this problem with my name and email address, the moderator removed my problem submission. Hence, I think anyone who wants to know more is out of luck.

  • VGA adapter splitter? 1 external monitor for desktop and macbook

I recently bought the Apple VGA adapter and it works great with my macbook and external monitor. However I use that same external monitor with my desktop PC. It's becoming a pain to constantly unscrew and plug out the VGA cable. So I'm trying to find a VGA splitter that has 2 male ends and 1 female end, but I'm not sure if something like that even exists. Basically I want to be able to use my external monitor with my macbook and pc without having to unplug the monitor's vga cable from my desktop. If anyone can give any suggestions that'd be great. Thanks!

You shouldn't try a splitter cable as you would have interference from the two signals. You need a VGA switch box like one of these.

  • You control: desktops and Macbook

Has anyone tried using this on their MB? It says requirement is support for Quartz Extreme.
Apple says this about Quartz Extreme:
"Quartz Extreme functionality is supported by the following video GPUs: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX and later, or any AGP-based ATI RADEON GPU. A minimum of 16MB VRAM is required".
However the Macbook uses an intergrate "Intel GMA 950 graphics
processor with 64MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory". Just curious if it will work or not. I have found some people who claim that Quartz extreme is supported on the MB but i'm still researching.
G4 Mac Mini; Macbook (black)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

This was the answer i got from "You Control" tech support, just incase anyone else has the same questions as me...
We have not directly tested with the MacBooks, but there should be no problem with the MacBook handling the graphics. The only thing that really uses the Quartz Extreme is the graphical transitions, so the product will work regardless. The one thing that may not work is if you have a second monitor, it may not be able to do the transitions on the second monitor.
Also, You Control: Desktops is available as a 15-day fully functional demo, so I'd encourage you to try it out for yourself to see if it behaves the way you expect.
