PC died and took iTunes with it!

My PC recently died and although I had moved a lot of content on to an external hard drive before its final demise I (stupidly) forgot to transfer iTunes. I've now lost my library but I do have all my tunes still on my iPod (nano). Is there any way I can re-create my library and playlists from the iPod to the PC rather than the other way round? I don't want to synch it cos I know that will wipe it clean! Any help would be gratefully receved!

Hello there,
And welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. The first link below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple Google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."

  • My computer died and took my itunes music with it

Help! my old Dell died, and took my music with it. I've spend a lot of money on music and tv shows from itunes, and I would like to get them on my new computer, but there doesn't seem to be a way to do that. Shouldn't I be able to take the things i've bought on my account and put them on my new computer? My old one is fried, won't turn on at all and the harddrive is aparently dead. there is no way to get the music off it over the internet or by burning it. Is there anyway to get my music back?

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. Starting with your iTunes Music Store purchases, the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

    iDump Windows Only
    iRepo Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions

There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

That message means that you have to restore the iPad using iTunes now. Something went wrong. This explains how to do it. Read it thoroughly before you start - and take note of the end of the article under Additional Information where it talks about using recovery mode. You might need to use it.

  • My hp computer died and took my itunes library with it...how can I retrieve my songs that I uploaded to itunes on my old computer? Thank you for your help

My HP computer running Windows XP died. The hard drive crashed and took my itunes library with it. I now have a new HP desktop running Windows 7 and can not get my full itunes library only what had been purchased. I am trying to retrieve all the songs we had including what we had uploaded from CDs etc.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

That would be easy and ideal but that is not the case here. The computer was repaired in Nov and then crashed in April completely. Thought it had been backed up to icloud but not very savvy with that. I have a sectored hard drive that was salvaged from the crash but having a difficult time reading and locating files on it.
Just wondering if there is a way to retrieve my itunes library to another computer????

  • Mac doesn't recognize shuffle and opening iTunes with Shuffle crashes Mac

I recently updated to iTunes 7. Now my Mac doesn't recognize my year old shuffle when I plug it in, and when I open iTunes it freezes the Mac.

I have been monitoring this forum on and off for weeks looking for a solution for my shuffle disfunction and this appears to be it.
My shuffle would play songs and recharge on my iMac but would not be recognized by iMac by any of the expected means. This problem started after updating to iTunes 7. Tried uninstalling 7, and any of the other suggestions here that could work with out communication between iMac and shuffle, since the shuffle would not link to the computer.
I had resigned myself to a shuffle that played only the songs currently loaded until it finally died. But, using the 06-06-28 updater worked for me as well, although it was a bit of a quirky process. Once launched, the updater immediately recognized my shuffle (first sign of life in weeks). When I chose the update button, it ran through an update but said there was an error after finishing and that I should disconnect, re-connect, and try again.
Just disconnecting the shuffle mad the updater crash. I had to restart my mac, but when restarted my shuffle launched itunes and there it was. It appears to be fully functional again and I jut cancel when it says there is an update available for my iPod.

  • I downloaded the new updated itunes and my iphone isn't connecting to itunes if i delete and reinstall itunes with my back up be saved

I backed up my phone to the computer before downloading IOS 7 and then it shut off and went into recover mode saying I had to restore my iphone to fix it. When I downloaded the new itunes it won't connect with my phone, if I delete itunes then reinstall it will all my stuff I backed up to the computer still be there

What has been attempted so far to rectify the problem?

  • Battery ran out and took touch with it

Apparently when my iPod touch battery died, it killed the entire device. I've tried everything I can find suggested on the Apple site but it's not helping.
I ran the battery of my year old iPod touch all the way down & it shut itself off. I put it on the charger and the white apple appeared on the touch screen, which seemed like a good thing; however, even though I left it on the charger over night, the iPod never started working again.
If I press the Home button, nothing happens.
If I press the On/Off button, the white Apple icon appears. Same thing if I press the two in tandem.
My Mac doesn't recognize the iPod when it's plugged in, so I can't do the restart procedures Apple suggests.
Also, I can't do the reset procedures since pressing the two buttons never gets me farther than the white apple.
I have the most up to date software on my iTunes and my iPod so it's not that either.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

This Has happened to me before
    I hate it.
What you do is take your touch and hold down power and home
    this should reset it
    Then re-sync your ipod
This issue has happened to me before.
Sometimes at some point it will just start working again
somtimes you need to reset it
If this didnt work than i cannot help.
    Good luck ^^

  • What devices can i download and play itunes with

My daughter inherited a very old laptop of mine, which is barely working.  All she essentially wants it for is to play her itunes through.  I want to buy her a new device but do not want to buy an actual laptop, as they are pretty expensive.  Ideally, I'd like to spend less than $200.  What devices can she play itunes through, besides her phone and ipod.  Any suggestions for what I could buy in my price range.  I was considering a chromebook but don't think that itunes supports that.  Also, was considering a kindle...but i don't know if that's supported either.

    Hi Stacy,
The requirements for running iTunes on a computer can be found here -
Apple - iTunes - Download iTunes Now
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For a PC those requirements are -
PC with a 1GHz Intel or AMD processor and 512MB of RAM
Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later, 32-bit editions of Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
64-bit editions of Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 require the iTunes 64-bit installer
    400MB of available disk space
Broadband Internet connection to use the iTunes Store
    For a Mac -
Mac computer with an Intel Core processor
OS X version 10.6.8 or later
    400MB of available disk space
Broadband Internet connection to use the iTunes Store
As a Chromebook fits neither of these using it would not be supported. iTunes is also not supported on a Kindle.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • HT1338 Help with needing to be able to set up icloud and sync itunes with iphone 4s

Can and do I need to download OS X Mountain lion to support me to be able to use Icloud for my mac and iphone 4s and to sync other stuff up to it? I currently am running on a Mac OS X 10.6.7 wtih 4GB and it says I need 10.6.8 to to icloud and sync my itunes to my phone.  What do you suggest? Is it possible to put OS X Mountain lion on my computer with its current state?

As your Mac should run Snow Leopard provided it has at least 1GB memory, that would be a good deal easier and very much cheaper than trying to find a 10.5 install disc.
Snow Leopard costs $30 approx from the online Apple store (£26 if you're in UK)
You'll need to update Tiger to 10.4.11 with the combo installer first (unless you're just erasing the disc and starting fresh) You can then update SL from 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 with its combo installer.
For comparison, 10.5 Leopard is currently running about $130 from Apple (if still available) and more on Amazon etc.
    This info for Leopard courtesy of TexasMacMan;
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installation system requirements

Leopard is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753).
If you can't obtain a retail install DVD from Apple, look on eBay or Google the installer part numbers to possibly find at an on-line store. Here's what to look for:
    MB427Z/A  Leopard 10.5.1 install DVD
    MB576Z/A  Leopard 10.5.4 install DVD
MB021Z/A  Leopard 10.5.6 install DVD (single user)
MB022Z/A  Leopard 10.5.6 install DVD (5-user family pack)
